The power in Nan Goldin's work is born out of her ability to document the drama in the mundane moments of life. As in her seminal book The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, the subjects of Ten Years After are Goldin's friends and she is expert at conveying the emotional charge she seems to feel around them. The photographs depict them at home in and around Naples, Italy, in 1986 and again in 1996. Cookie, Vittorio, and Daniele--to whose memory the book is dedicated--figure heavily in the earlier pictures. The images are of everyday life: the three friends walking a dog in the woods, Cookie alone in the bathtub, Cookie and Daniele casually posing as if for a quick snapshot. But Goldin's lens transforms these shots into sublime images. Cookie's bath is so drenched in yellow sunlight that viewers feel there's a chance they're peering into heaven. Rebecca at the beach holding an infant to her breast, with a towel draped over her head as a sun shield, is as lovely and intense as any depiction of the Madonna and child. When Goldin returns to Naples 10 years later, the three friends are gone, and more of Goldin's images are absent of people altogether. Color-saturated landscapes, building interiors, and introspective human subjects convey a strong sense of the passage of time and its effect on personal histories.
The book is compact and the color photographs expertly reproduced on heavy paper stock. This design makes it very easy for readers to study both the photos and the accompanying writing, fittingly penned by the artist's friends and models Guido Costa and Cookie Mueller. --Jordana Moskowitz

I found this collection (with essays by Cookie Mueller and Guido Costa) to be absolutely mesmerizing. The photographs are so compelling, you can almost smell the life and exuberance of these people, so aimless and free, and so close to the underbelly of society. Highly recommended. Especially touching and true are Cookie Mueller's short essays, well worth the purchase.

It'll never look the same again. We visited the Texas State Aquarium, in Corpus Christi- which happens to have a special exhibit of Jim Toomey's cartoons, with original drawings, used to raise awareness of marine conservation in kids. Fun for adults, too!
Who couldn't want marine conservation after becoming familiar with the inhabitants of Kapupu Lagoon? Sherman is a shark with, let's say, not too much in the way of brains; his mate, Megan, is much smarter - but has her weaknesses. Hawthorne is an irritable and irritating hermit crab, who wears a beer can rather than a shell. Hawthorne has a rather elaborate crab hole- Persian carpets, golf putting range - and is always dreaming up schemes to make more money. Fillmore is an endangered turtle, who can't find a mate, possibly because of the extremely bad poetry he writes. Other characters we see regularly include a polar bear who visits the Lagoon every year instead of hibernating; a computer-savvy fish who swims around with a laptop and hacks into important systems; a giant squid who always keeps his appointments; an orca formerly in a sea-entertainment complex, who can't quite cope with life in the wild; and the occasional herd of vegetarian piranha. There's also a couple of human characters once in a while- a fishing boat captain trying to catch Sherman and/or his friends, to use on the menu at his seafood restaurant; the people who run glass-bottom boat tours; and of course the hairless beach apes whom Sherman tries to lure into the water for lunch.
Every strip is funny; the messages about marine conservation, about cable lines under the ocean and other human incursions affecting sea life sneak in at you without detracting from the humor at all.

This book is again a phantastic collection of funny
and often very curious fish cartoon stories. Even the 4th
book is as good as the first one. The author projects
ordinary (and not so ordinary ;-)) everyday situations on
a couple of fishs around sherman the shark living in a
little lagoon at Kapupu Island. It is one of the best
cartoons and I think the best fish cartoon available.
For fans it's a wonderful reunion with Sherman, Megan,
Fillmore, Capt. Quigly, and all the others.

Sherman's back. Still eating most everything in sight. Still failing Megan in the romance department. Still losing his fights with the giant squid. And still hilariously goofy in the process. Weird, wonderful, and hard to describe, I suggest you check out some of the strips online (you'll have to search for them, Amazon won't let me include the URL) and, if you laugh hard, buy this book. If you laugh a little read a few more until you do laugh hard, then buy this book. If you have no idea why anyone would laugh at this stuff, better stick to Family Circus!

Ray Romano's Everybody Loves Raymond is the most important TV comedy since Seinfeld. Now he makes his debut as an author with a reported seven-figure book deal. And Barry dared not utter the word prostate in Dave Barry Turns 50, but Romano provides a state-of-the-art prostate-exam reminiscence. There is no shame he shuns--not his fear of spiders, exacerbated when he splooshed one off his windshield with the washer button through the moonroof into the car while driving, nor his sexual-conquest count ("one less than the number of times I've been stung by a bee... greater than the number of times I've put a pet to sleep... exactly equal to the number of times I've been crapped on by a bird"). This is a must read for Men everywhere! The similarities of experiences are incredible. I grew up in North Jersey. I am an Italian American and can relate to all of it. Great stuff.
The quick and the funny ... .......2005-08-27
I enjoyed this book partly because I happen to enjoy Ray Romano's comedic style. If you like the TV show then you will probably like this book.
I'd definitely recommend the audiobook over the paper version b/c it's all about the delivery! Do be forewarned though that there is so profanity in the book. It's not used flagrantly but if that sort of stuff offends you, you may want to take heed. If you buy the audioversion then just don't listen to it with the kids in the car unless you want them to repeat the bad language - it's promient enough for them to pick up on it. This is a very quick read and if you have kids you will certainly appreciate many of the stories that Ray shares with his audience. They are very funny. Worth purchasing.

Dry, sarcastic humor abounds...and if that's what you appreciate, then you'll enjoy this read. I didn't need all the swearing and sexual comments though. Still recommendable though.

Don't expect any detailed plots or intelligent twists and turns. This book is hilarious because it focuses on Ray and his view of life. If you like his kind of funny, you will love this book.

A glory of the late Italian middle ages.......2004-10-10
The Visconti Hours dates was painted in Italy for the Visconti family of Florence in the early 1400's. This book reproduces the illuminated carpet pages from this manuscript along with an introduction to the history of the book and commenty on individual plates. The plates themselves are very colourful and striking filled with vivid pinks, purples and greens. There were two main artists who produced this book and their work is quite distinctive giving the second half of the book quite a different flavour from the first half.
My main complaints about this reproduction is that the gold ink that has been used to recreate the effect of gold leaf in the original book has somewhat obscured some of the detail in the facsimile plates, and that some of the edges of the pages appear to have been chopped off to forced into the current book size which gives the impression of the illuminations spilling off the page or amputated in some cases.
However, these quibbles aside, this is a striking manuscript, well worthy of reproduction and every time you look at you are astonished at the brightness of the plates and the colours the artists selected. They are very different from the books produced in France and England during the same period. This book, in hardback, with a slipcase, is recommended to anybody who enjoys the striking beauty of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
Magnificent Reproduction of an Amazing Book.......2000-07-02
The Visconti Hours, one of the most luxurious and unusual Italian Books of Hours from around 1400, is magnificently reproduced in this facimile edition. The introductory text begins with an excellent summary of the political and social context of the book's production for Giangaleazzo Visconti, its noble owner. It continues with a discussion of the book's structure, iconography, and painting techniques, and includes short biographies of the two artists.
The plates themselves are of particularly high quality, sharp, clear, and brilliant, with gold stamping. The commentaries are informative.
All in all, this book is a must-have for any serious student of medieval illumination, as well as for the simple pleasure of enjoying its outstanding beauty.

Henry Bacon has proven himself a brilliant researcher and author by writing the finest, and truest account of the master of film Luchino Visconti. Bacon's book is a highly detailed, fact filled documentary of the director's vision as it relates to his spectacular career. The book is the ultimate guide to anyone studying film or researching Visconti. Bacon has properly and intelligently put into context Visconti's aristocratic background in relation to his developing career, he has included every single film, and planned project including those that have been lost, and goes in-depth to discuss Visconti's frame of mind, project by project, and how his entire brillant career developed. Aristocrat and Marxist, master equally of harsh realism and sublime melodrama, Luchino Visconti (1906-1976) was without question one of the greatest European film directors. His career as a film-maker began in the 1930s when he escaped the stifling culture of Fascist Italy to work with Jean Renoir in the France of the Popular Front. Back in his native country in the 40s he was one of the founders of the neo-realist movement. In 1954, with Senso, he turned his hand to a historical spectacular. The result was both glorious to look at and a profound reinterpretation of history. In Rocco and His Brothers (1960) he returned to his neo-realist roots and in The Leopard (1963), with Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon, he made the first truly international film. He scored a further success with Death in Venice (1971), a sensitive adaptation of Thomas Mann's story about a writer (in the film, a musician) whose world is devastated when he falls in love with a young boy. A similar homo-erotic theme haunts Ludwig (1973), a bio-pic about the King of Bavaria who prefers art to politics and the company of stableboys to the princess he is supposed to marry.
Geoffrey Nowell-Smith's classic study of the director was first published in 1967 and revised in 1973. It is now updated to include the last three films that Visconti made before his death, together with some reflections on the "auteur" theory of which the original edition was a key example.

I'm not a crocheter, I'm a knitter. I had not seen many crocheted afgans or shawls I would actually consider making until this book showed up in my knitting group. These are beautiful. I kept flipping through, expecting the popcorn lego strangeness so endemic to crochet design, boring blues and ranch color worsted, but instead here there are page after page of carefully patterned, tasteful brocade style richness. There are beautiful edging details, subtle color. Even my snooty mom would have been proud to own anything in here. Great book!
An Excellent Crochet Encyclopedia.......2004-09-12
I have never made an item from a pattern in this book. That being said, I use the book all the time. Ms. Chin has thoughtfully included enough information in her instructions to allow one the ability to use it as a "stitch enclycopedia." I thoroughly enjoy cable, post and long stitches, and the book is filled with patterns utilizing these stitches.
Some of the techniques are hard to follow. You have to take it step by step in order to reproduce them. I think a bit more thought in the layout of the information would be helpful, as would international symbols.
I love the book and have recommended it to many of my fellow crocheters. Lily is an excellend ambassador for crochet. If her latest book is a thoroughly useful as this one, I will be purchasing it soon.
--Autust, 2005: I have to edit this because I have an afghan almost to Lili's specs, so my first sentence is not quite true anymore. Still am as enthusiactic about the book as ever.
Long Double Crochet should be illustrated.......2004-02-05
This is a very good book for creating some really lovely afghans. However, the technique is based on two basic stitches that are completely glossed over. 1 - the sc used to give the pieces a mosaic look and feel are barely mentioned in the patterns. Without the consistency of the sc odd numbered rows you would get a totally different outcome. 2 - the basis for everything else is the LDC stitch. Unfortunately there is no illustration of the long double crochet stitch in the stitches at the end of the book. The stitches illustrated are reprints of the basic crochet stitches found in all crochet books. Time should have been taken to create an illustration of the stitch that the technique is centered around - LDC.

This is one of the best crochet books I own. Lily Chin shows you how to take simple crochet stitches a step further to achieve gorgeous mixes of color and texture...and the beauty of it all is that you save a lot of ends to weave in as you don't change color within the same row! The creative end result of her technique is a fabulous collection of elegant afghan patterns that achieve a designer look.
What's more is that Ms. Chin provides the pattern stitch multiples so you can adapt her savvy pattern stitch combinations to other projects of interest. She even encourages you to do so with a few non-afghan teasers.
It would be preferable to have some crochet experience before trying the designs in this book but by no means do you have to be an expert. For novices and experienced crocheters alike, this book will inspire the creative person inside you by opening your eyes to the multitude of stitch and color combinations you can simply achieve through crochet. I most definately agree that knitters will want to take up crochet!
Book from the world's fastest crocheter.......2003-01-13
Yes, according to the Guiness people at the Caroline Rhea show, Lily Chin is the world's fastest crocheter. Not only that, she is a talented knit and crochet designer.
This book shakes up the notion of what crocheted items look like - yes, we crocheters know it isn't all those granny square pochos in forest green and harvest gold, but the world doesn't know that yet. M's Chin's designs for afghans and wearables are very interesting and look quite elegant.
This is not, however, for raw beginners although the instructions are clear and precise. This is for crocheters who want to stretch their talent in a different way and do not have to worry about exactly how the stitches turn out. This is a good book for somebody who has some experience crocheting so they can see what is possible to do with the art of crochet.
Crochet has never gotten the respect knitting gets and I believe this items in this book will help people see crocheting in a new way. So until that day, nake an item (or three) from this book and be prepared to explain "No, it's crocheted" to the unknowing. You'll enjoy the book and the projects and spreading the word that crochet is cool.

I have read a number of books about real estate tax planning, and this is by far the best. It is clear, to the point, and very readable. The author goes through the basics of how a capital gains basis is calculated, rules about stepping up basis, primary residence exclusion rules, etc. He then discusses various ways of deferring or eliminating capital gain consequences via 1031, installment sales, private annuity trusts, charitable remainder trusts and Roth IRAs. The chapter on private annuity trusts is one of the least known, yet most valuable strategies that exists. Buy this book!

I was extremely happy to find a "How To "book that got right to the point. It is obvious that the author has "Been There, Done That".
The technical explanations were clear and thorough.
There are alot of new (to me) and interesting approaches on how to structure transactions. Annuities,IRA's etc.
Easy read,a lot of useable content.
