A former New York Times art critic's argument for a radical new perspective on government funding for visual artists. Where Renaissance Italy had patrons, America in the early 1960s embraced the revolutionary idea of government-sponsored art with no strings attached. Through the auspices of the National Endowment for the Arts, founded in 1965, this country embarked on a daring experiment in laissez-faire artistic funding, providing financial support for visual artists without exerting any of the controls that patrons usually require. Thirty years later, the experiment ground to a bitter, embattled halt. Though congressmen had expounded eloquently a quarter-century earlier about the nation's need for artists, nary a person in a position of political or cultural power came to their defense as funding was cut. Enjoyable on many levels.......2007-08-10

I have ordered several of these books, which I read with my 4-year-old son before bed. The visuals help him understand the stories, which are simple and innocent, yet engaging and creative enough for an adult to get something out of. They were written in the 40's, so I've had to give him some nostalgic background on what things like a "soap box derby" are. The stories are quite long and usually clever. The art is simple yet enjoyable.

A complete waste of time. I suppose it is a whimsical idea to use Pooh to explain the version of philosophy that you favor. Others might term this exploitative. In fact, there is probably a comic in there somewhere, The Revenge of Pooh, where pragmatic realistic toys with weapons come and kick the stuffing out of wacko writers.

I found this to be a simply delightful read. It was easy to comprehend and get through. Whoever thought that Pooh might one day come back and enlighten me as much as he entertained me as a kid growing up.

I learned of this book through my truck insurance auto person in Minnesota. He told me of this book and I bought it and thought it had some great insites on life. They were always there but Pooh brings them out in a way that makes me think farther into it. Really good. PSM

Outstanding book.......2007-09-16

Jon does a GREAT job bringing the hobby of storm chasing to children. Its amazing how many kids are interested in tornadoes and storms.

This is a first-ever book that I have seen that bring this great hobby to the level of children. Book is well written and easy to understand. As far as I'm concerned, this book should be on the shelves of every school library. My wife has already bought several copies for the school she teaches at!

Storm Chasing.......2007-08-18

I purchased this book for my grandson in Texas. He is very interested in tornadoes as you can imagine, he has seen his share of storms. This is an excellent book that describes everything a storm chaser does and explains storms and tornadoes and how they form. It provides a fun and informative approach to this subject. I highly recommend this book for young readers.

A great collaboration between multiple authors to tell a single solid story........2007-05-25

As far as anthologies go, this is one of the best I've ever read. That's probably because it doesn't really read like an anthology at all. All of the individual stories tie into one another to make up the complete story of Gerrard's quest to Rath, where he rescues Sisay and confounds Volrath's plans of conquest. This story is the focal point of the Weatherlight, Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus expansion packs for MTG. Additional resources for this story include the graphic novel Magic - The Gathering: Gerrard`s Quest and the beautifully done ART OF MAGIC, THE (Magic the Gathering Artbooks). These two supplementary volumes help flesh out the characters and their mission in better detail (and in full color). I'd recommend them to gain a better understanding of the story.

Gerrard and his companions are some of the coolest characters up to this time (publication date) in the MTG novels. Complex and highly intriguing interactions between the characters and their individual motivations make for an interesting read with lots of side stories to interest the reader. While not all of these are brought to a conclusion, the overall story was wrapped up rather nicely at the end of the book. The most impressive thing to me was how all of the different authors were able to mesh their individual contributions into the whole to make a very satisfying and complete feeling novel. Peter Archer's intermission scenes, where an old librarian is relating the tale to a young student, aid in filling in many important details and are a necessity for the true story.

One of the better MTG novels I've read, and definitely the best of the anthologies.

Must read, because you have to.......2005-05-04

This book is a must read, only because you will be lost in future books if you don't. I hate anthologies and this is why. There is not enough room to go deep into each of the characters. The thing hops around so much, it is hard to follow. There should have been another trilogy of books to tell the stories properly.

Excellent Book1.......2003-02-05

This book was very good - it was a major part of the Magic Universe. This book only gets four stars for two reasons.

1) The climax was very lacking. It just seems like the authors assumed that you would piece everything together. There was no big battle or anything. And what is up with leaving Eirtay behind? And Crovax turning into a vampire? Starke's story never resolved, and many characters were never touched on at the end.

2) Errors! I was astonished at the number of grammer errors, typos, and printing mistakes that the editors should have caught. I felt that I was reading a rough draft.

Besides this though, the book was well written and I liked learning about each character from their viewpoint. A must read for any Magic fan!

Rath and Storm.......2002-08-08

I know kind of what this ones about, My friend has filled me in.
This is supposed to be the story of Rath where Gerrard and the Weatherlight go and save Sisay from Gerrards brother Volrath, Evincar of Rath. I loved this story only because Volrath was in it. Ertai [made me angry] when he helped Crovax defeat Volrath. Volrath had the upper hand he was going to kill him when Ertai moved the sword. Well when I read that I was ready to go and strangle Ertai he severly [made me angry]! IF your a fan of Volrath, DO NOT READ THIS! If you arent then read it its very good.

Good Book, Lacking In Some Areas.......2002-05-04

First, let me state that I've been playing M:TG for about 6 years, am a huge fan, and have read all the books in the Artifact Cycle plus the Mercadian Masques book. I'm reviewing this book in comparison to the other books I've read as well as the knowledge I've gained about the characters through playing M:TG.

Each chapter is written by a different author and is from a single character's vantage point. The chapters are tied together by a series of "Dark Room" chapters where a librarian tells the story to a youth. The book is, for the most part, very well written. However, each author has a different style so it lacks some consistency in a few parts. It becomes frustrating when all you can read is one character's account of what happened. This effect is magnified when you realize the book spans the Weatherlight, Tempest, Stronghold, and Exodus expansions. Many times I found myself wondering what the other characters felt during any given situation. Authors also seem to have left out many minor details which can add up quickly.

I am very critical of this book because it is such an important chapter to a much larger book in the Magic Universe. My one major gripe is that each chapter focuses on only one character, instead of attempting to portray what everyone else sees and feels during each situation. Overall, I give this book 3 1/2 stars (7.0 on a scale from 1-10). It really is a good read, but to me it just wasn't in-depth enough. It's more of a general overview of the events that transpired in each of the 4 expansions mentioned earlier.

However, I strongly recommend reading this as it will make nearly all of the other books easier to understand. It also helps to add to your overall understanding of the Magic Universe

Superseded by: "Selling is Dead".......2007-07-07

In it's day this would rate six stars out of five, but it's been superseded by "Selling is Dead" authored by Marc Miller and Jason Sinkovitz. In fact, the authors are students of Mr. Rackham and give him ample credit for the ground breaking work of "Major Account Sales Strategy."

Spin Selling is his best; this is very good.......2007-02-04

A good effort. Major accounts are the key to all solid selling; Rackman is always good to read. What company wouldn't want their people to read a selling book? See also Strategic Selling by Miller and Sales Skills by Simply Media. Amazon has both.

SPIN Theory gets you on the table, this book tells you how to get the final business.......2007-01-21

I thought SPIN theory is what you need first, but after reading this book, based on my personal experience, use of SPIN theory earns the opportunity for one to get on the table, but doesn't mean the business is in your hand. There are few more phases that you have to go through and this book talks through that. Just because the customer has realized a need for something, does not make them write the check -- lot of other things come into play such as do I need this now, am I making the correct decision in going with the choice etc. Must read for some one who is trying to do sales.

Forget business sales, my bar for testing any of these theories is not at work, but at home -- I always try and test these theories at home (with my family) and if it works at home, then IT obviously works outside.

Great book to read.

Excellent .......2006-07-19

If the title of the book suggests you something you are looking for, don't hesitate and buy it. It is excellent. It displays a completely actionable model of the selling -or buying- cycle. It describes the phases of the cycle and it gives the strategic principles to follow in each one of them. Mr. Rackham is a true expert in this field.

Top 5 all time best sales books.......2005-10-26

This book is in my top 5 all time best written sales books ever. Neils approach is unique, it stands the test of time. He talks about the buyers cycle as it relates to the sellers process. They need to be in alignment...if not, you will not get the sale. This book is a must read for anyone selling. A good compliment to SPIN and really any value based selling methodology including ROI Selling.

A Good Step-by-Step Workbook.......2003-02-07

If you are looking for a workbook on securing corporate deals and managing corporate accounts, this book takes you on a step-by-step journey on a case or two. In particular, the book is easy to read and the short-sharp contents are well organised for impatient people like me.

But the book could have a stronger emphasis on consultative selling to help consultants (or readers) to understand and manifest the value of "solution" sales i.e. what truly brings in deals beyond the "Six Figure" as suggested on the book's title...unless I interpreted the book's title wrongly.
