Book Description

Thousands of books and articles have been written about Walt Disney and his organization, yet few people realize the significance railroading played in the evolution of the Disney empire. Encouraged by Walt's family and railfans inside and outside the Disney organization, Michael Broggie has chronicled the tale of Walt Disney's personal involvement in railroading.

This book unveils the private realm of Disney railroading through hundreds of photographs, many of which have never before been made public, and interviews with Mrs. Walt Disney, Diane Disney Miller, Ward Kimball, Ollie Johnston, Bob Harpur, Bill Cottrell, Roger Broggie, Bill Evans, and many others.

Walt Disney's love affair with trains began in his hometown of Marceline, Missouri. His first job was selling tobacco, candy, and newspapers on the Missouri Pacific line. By 1950, his enthusiasm for realistic model trains had evolved into an elaborate backyard live steam railroad. Walt's Carolwood Pacific Railroad included a 46-foot-long trestle, loops, overpasses, gradients, an elevated dirt berm, and a 90-foot tunnel underneath Mrs. Disney's flower bed!

The complete history of the Disney railroads, from small scale models to steam trains for the Disney parks is covered. This is a book all Disney collectors and railroad enthusiasts will want to experience! Over 300 illustrations, many previously unpublished.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book about Walt Disney's vision..........2006-07-07

Having been a "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" tour guide at Disneyland AND an engineer on the Steam Trains, I can say with full confidence that this is THE best book written about Walt Disney and his vision of Disneyland, and his love of trains.

The photographs are outstanding, the writing is wonderful, interesting, and easy to read, and the the stories, history, and facts are amazing.

Buy this book for yourself, and get an extra copy to give to someone who likes Disney - they'll be very thankful!

5 out of 5 stars Also an excellent book on the history of DIsneyland.......1998-05-16

I consider myself an expert on Disneyland; I'm a former Imagineer and a collector of Disneyland information. Michael Broggie is not exaggerating his father's importance to the realization of Walt's dream. This book goes slightly beyond the sanitized "official" version that the Disney company promulgates and includes some stories and details that haven't been widely known. It's a beautiful coffee table book, complete and accurate (except for one or two nits someone like me might pick). I love it particularly for all the never-before published photos--you get so tired of seeing the same old approved shots when you collect Disneylandiana.

In case Amazon doesn't provide links, I would also recommend "Walt Disney Imagineering" by David Mumford, et.al. and "Inside Story" by the late Randy Bright. Both are "official," but just as authoritative as Broggie's.

5 out of 5 stars Worth reading from Cover to Cover.......1998-05-08

I normally only read technical books. I picked this book up just to look at the pictures. Then I started to read the short articles within the chapters. I found them so fasinating that I found myself reading the main articles. My son asked my wife "what is Dad doing reading?". Walt Disney said that it all started with a mouse, but after reading this book you will realize that it all started with a train.

5 out of 5 stars Walt Disney's Railroad Story is a delightful book!.......1998-03-01

I have always loved the trains at Disneyland more than any other attraction. I always had dozens of questons about the trains that I wished I could get answers to. When I found out about this book I ordered it immediately. (My first experince with "one-click" ordering by the way, and WOW how easy!!) The book arrived on a Friday and I sat down to read it as soon as I got home from work. I could not put it down! I read straight through until 4am the next morning and finished it. It answered all the questions I ever had about the trains at Disneyland. It is a wonderful glimpse into the life of Walt Disney, and the group of incredibly talented people who worked for him. If you love trains, this book is a must. If you love Disneyland, this book is a must. If you could care less about trains and Disneyland, but you love a good story, this book is a must. Thank you Michael Broggie, for sharing this wonderful story.

5 out of 5 stars A very fascinating book for railroaders & Disney fans.......1997-10-24

As a backyard railroader for the last 30 years, I had always wanted to find out more about Walt Disney's backyard, the "Carolwood Pacific". Now in "Walt Disney's Railroad Story", you can read about all of his interest in railroading, first building a miniature railroad in his backyard, and finally developing theme parks, complete with railroads. Author Broggie knew Walt personally, and covers all of the details of the many Disney railroads. This is one book that I could hardly put down until I had read it completely. I feel that this is a book that should be on the shelf of every backyard railroader and most Disney fans.

"

Designers are great white sharks, and we roam the waters ourselves. We often pretend to like and admire each other, but sometimes we don't even bother to fake it. The fashion industry is as hardworking, incestuous, and political as any other, and it's virtually impossible, given the size of designers' egos, to sincerely wish someone else well, because behind every false tribute is 'It should have been me.'”

So writes Joseph Abboud, who fell in love with style at five. There in the dark of the movie house, he wasn't just some Lebanese kid with a babysitter. He was the hero, in tweeds and pocket squares. That's where he learned that clothes represented a better life -- a life he wanted, and would grab, for himself. From his blue-collar childhood in Boston's South End to his spread-collar success as one of America's top designers, he has forged a remarkable path through the unglamorous business of making people look glamorous.

He transformed American menswear by replacing the traditional stiff-shouldered silhouette with a grown-up European sensuality. He was the first designer to win the coveted CFDA award as Best Menswear Designer two years in a row and the first designer to throw out the opening pitch at Fenway Park. He's been jilted by Naomi Campbell (who didn't show up on the runway for his first women's fashion show) and questioned by the FBI (who did show up in his office right after September 11 because he fit the profile). He's soared and sunk more than a few times -- and lived to tell the tales.

Threads is his off-the-record take on fashion, from the inside out. With breezy irreverence, he looks at guys and taste, divas and deviousness, fabric and texture, and all those ties. He takes us to the luxe bastion of Louis Boston, where he came of age and learned the trade, and to the seductive domain of Polo Ralph Lauren, where he became associate director of menswear design. He reveals the mystique of department-store politics, what's what at the sample sale, and who copies whom. He explains the process of making great clothes, from conception and sketch to manufacturing and marketing.

Whether he's traveling by daredevil horse, plunging plane, Paris Métro, or cross-country limo, Abboud is an illuminating guide to a complex world.

5 out of 5 stars He's got style..........2005-06-08

I wasn't sure what how much I'd enjoy a book by a menswear designer, but I have to say that this book was a joy. From his humble beginnings in a Middle Eastern Boston neighborhood, Joseph Abboud moved from a kid with a face pressed to the window of a men's shop to one of the top designers in the world. I will definitely never look at a tie in the same way or a men's suit. The insight into the polo shirt craze of the 80's was endearing also, as I remember everyone in my high school sporting one in every color available.

Probably the most curious thing to me after reading this book is why I've never heard of Joseph Abboud until now. Some of the people he's dressed have definitely caught my attention. We live in a more casual time, but reading this book has definitely made me think about how people perceive appearance, even in this dot-com-shorts-and-sandals world. There's still nothing like a good man in a good suit. That's what made me fall for my husband. Check this one out. There's more than clothes here.

5 out of 5 stars What a Guy.......2005-02-26

Joe Abboud-what a guy! So funny, so forthright, so talented, so over-the-top crazy about clothes! Through the brash, colorful, passionate voice of a man drunk on color and cut and fabric, I've suddenly become sensitized to the glory of clothes, and to the talent and zeal required to design them. Ah, the softness of a just-right flannel! The beauty of a tweed created in Scotland from threads dyed to match pebbles found on a Nantucket beach! The fine look of a man of any size in a perfectly cut suit! The importance of choosing (and properly arranging) the correct pocket square!

This man's outsize personality comes through on every page, and the glimpses he provides of life behind the scenes in high-end shops, at fashion shows, and in top designers' showrooms are often hilarious and always fascinating, even to someone who doesn't (or, before Abboud, didn't) give a fig about fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, meandering read.......2005-01-07

I chose to purchase Joseph's book because I very much like his clothing and find that he has a different, down-to-earth approach to the "fashion world". The book itself is partly a book on men's fashion and partly an autobiography. Ultimately, it is a pleasant and quick read, but I would not characterize it knock-me-off-my-seat insightful or as having any real intention or focus.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, beautiful style.......2004-12-14

Man, oh man! What an engrossing, informative, delightful read! I loved the conversational tone, as if "Joey" and I were tete-a-tete (thanks to Ellen Stern's writing skill, for sure).
I loved learning about buttons and paisleys and the infinite variety of browns. Who knew....? Most of all, I loved being invited to get to know this interesting person, with his art and craft, his vision and passion, and his oh, so elegant, oh, so very beautiful style. What a man!

5 out of 5 stars It's about passion, not just fashion.......2004-12-09

Not just for fashionistas, this conversational, accessible, melodious book soars above the genre of celebrity autobiographies. Joseph Abboud is in love with fabric--the look, feel, smell, & posibility of it--& he not only catches you up in his passion, he reminds you that passion itself is the defining human experience. The voice rings true, the pace is impeccable, the whole read a great ride, thanks to Abboud's seamless partnership with former GQ editor and much-published author Ellen Stern. Don't miss it.

the 5th book is the best book by far, the other books were pretty much fun & games but this book really reveals all of the troubles of our lovable characters. in this we finally find out about izumi's past, u really start feeling sorry 4 him, i mean his mother was so abusive, and he was only a few years old 2! tear, sniff... the ending 2 this book was such a bad place 2 stop, i mean, jonathon captures izumi. who is jonathon really, i mean we haven't ever seen him in a human form, hes always a ghost. when the 6th book came out i was sort of disappointed cause it just didn't compare 2 the 5th book.^_^ book 5 is my fav. book of all time!^_^

    4 out of 5 stars Troubling Times.......2006-03-26

When we last left our characters, Takuto had expressed his love to Mitsuki. Meroko, upset at the loss of Takuko's love (though she never had it to begin with ^_^) and confused by the sudden return of her human memories, asked Izumi to take her back to the underworld. In the newest volume, just before Meroko and Izumi leave, Mitsuki shows up to try and bring her back. She tries to explain the circumstances but will this be enough to bring Meroko back home?

With Mitsuki and FullMoon's birthday 2 days away, everyone is celebrating... including a fan of FullMoon's who does not want her to sing. When the crazed fan starts to attack FullMoon's human friends, Mitsuki wants to give up her singing career. Will she give into the fan's demands? And more importantly: will the culprit ever be caught?

Also in the manga, Izumi's human past revealed! What forced him to take his own life?

After the first four light-hearted volumes, volume 5 seems to be the most troubling, with less laughter and several heart stopping moments. Its not any less awesome than the other volumes but it is darker. The ending will blow you away! What a terrible place to leave the story at! Hopefully July will come fast so we can get volume 6 soon. Add this volume to your manga collection as soon as possible. It was well worth the wait so why wait any longer? Enjoy!

    Book Description

Created by Roger Price in the 1950's, Droodles became an overnight sensation and were hailed as the world's newest "art form." Today they've become humor classics and remain as funny as when first published. They've been called many things ("Scrabble for Illiterates," "Solitare For Morons"), but they are actually "The Best Of All Possible Ways To Waste Time." Study these classic, greatest-of-all-time Droodles and discover the Real Truth (and Laughter) in all that life has to offer.

    5 out of 5 stars Everybody loves a Droodle..........2006-03-15

    Even though most people wouldn't know what to call them,I can't imagine anyone who has not seen one and got a kick out of solving it. Quite simply, they are just a very simple sketch that can be drawn by anyone in a couple of seconds and represents something.The object is to determine what the Droodle represents.It's a little hard to show one ,but I'll give it a go;

A picture of an apple with 2 worms sticking out.
    Ans.Worm taking date to dinner.

A large circle with 2 feet at the bottom.
    Ans.Bubble Gum Champ.
Price gives some great comments on them. For instance on this one; "If you got this one,it shows you have a healthy attitude toward life and are fond of sports. However,if you prefer the alternate title:
Small Boy Throwing Baseball (at You).
you are apprehensive and nervous and should get a divorce and go live all alone in the mountains somewhere."
    Or;
A square with a lot of dots beside it.
    Ans. Unassembled Sandpaper.

There is another simple puzzle which is quite similar.Virtually everyone has seen these, too. They are called Plexers and usually made up of letters or words. For example:

    TUNE BADwolf BADINSHAPE
    TUNE
    TUNE
    TUNE
ANS. Tune-up...Big bad wolf ...In bad shape.
A similar book of these is listed on Amazon. "Plexers" by Dave Hammond.

As you can see, this is simple stuff, that can be enjoyed by all ages. Simple as they seem when solved; sometimes you can rack your brains over them. Then there is also the possibility of multiple solutions. Why not take the solution and ask that a Droodle be drawn; the challenge increases immensely.
Try to draw a Droodle of Ants Crawling Through Spilled Champagne.
According to the previous reviewer Price was the inventor of the Droodle as an art form. The copyrights for this book go back to 1953 and I remember having a paperback by the same author on Droodles about that time. So,these fun little puzzles have entertained us for over 50 years;and still going strong.
A greal little book to have around when things get dull.

    4 out of 5 stars A neat little book for a gift.......2003-09-08

The author, Roger Price, was a first-rank single-panel magazine cartoonist of the 'fifties, and he invented this art style--a great, funny time waster, and a neat gift book when you are fresh out of ideas and want some little thing to let that special someone with a sense of humor know that you are thinking of them.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Cary Grant might be very complex and
difficult person to live with.Yet he is gentle and kind. That is enough.I
simply feel sorry that Maureen Donaldson didn't marry him.She Couldn't
realize how much she was loved! She will also regret not marrying him for the
rest of her life!! (Sorry for my bad English)

5 out of 5 stars Reading Past Midnight.......2007-01-02

I give this book 5 stars because there are not too many books that keep me awake at night. Usually even a good book puts me to sleep sooner or later. Not this one.

Maureen Donaldson had a four year relationship with legendary Hollywood actor Cary Grant from 1973-1977 after he had retired from film making. Her descriptions of meeting and first getting to know Grant made me feel like I was almost experiencing it with her. I could definitely identify with her feelings of awe and being overwhelmed that Cary Grant was interested in her. I would have felt the same way. As she got to know him and spend more time with him, she saw that he was only human (aren't we all). In fact, he was very human, with many of the same fears, insecurities and childhood hurts that so many of us have to deal with ourselves.

I agree with other reviewers who feel this book is not a trash Cary Grant book. I don't think that was her intention. I don't think less of Grant now than before I read the book. From everything I have read about Grant in this book and elsewhere, it seems he had a very rock-solid core to him. He comes across as a very loyal friend, surprisingly generous at times (when the mood struck him), tender-hearted and kind.

Maureen tells in her book how Grant read a daily devotional each day of the year out of a Christian booklet he had a subscription to. After they broke up Maureen said she continued the practice of reading those daily selections herself.

She took Grant to an Alice Cooper concert (with Grant in disguise). He hated it, but the fact that she talked him into going proves to me that he really cared about her. A man his age going to an Alice Cooper concert? That is love.

I do wonder why she wrote this book. I guess I should not try to speculate. According to Maureen, Grant tried to get her to marry him and even enlisted Jennifer Jones and her last husband to offer their home as a wedding site.

Even after reading the whole book I still can't help but think Maureen was nuts not to marry him.

      4 out of 5 stars ..........2006-05-11

I've just finished reading this and i'm a little shellshocked. Not because I feel Grant has been villified but perhaps merely because it shows such a debonair and enigmatic idol of mine as a true fallible human being.

Like the other reviewer commented, I too thought it seemed to be written with a fair amount of objectivity. It did not come across to me as a bitter and delibrate attempt to trash or undermine Grant. It does come across, however, as a bit of a tacky and harrowing romance novel, even the presentation of the book conveys such an image.

I think if you're a Cary Grant fan that wants to find out a little more about Archie Leach and is willing to accept the fact that their view of Cary may be tarnished in the process; then go ahead and read this, it is an interesting and (from what I can tell) balanced read.

Let's all hope he was happy in the end.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-11-09

I felt like I knew Cary Grant much better after reading this book. It seems to have been written with some objectivity. The book makes you feel as though you are right in the middle of their relationship. I really enjoyed reading about the details of the most dashing man of the classic movie era. There will never be another Cary Grant, unfortunately.

... according to the rumor-mill and "The London Evening Standard."

This is an intimate portrait of "the most elegant man in the movies." Married five times, the last time at age 71, and fathered a child for the first time at age 62.

The real-life story is better than the movies!

5 out of 5 stars An excellant book.......2005-12-08

first off, before I begin my review, I would like to say that I not just some idiot who is reviewing a book just to give the book a good rating for a GM. I am about 1850 USCF, and 2000 strength. I have annalyzed many fantastic positions with many NMs, SMs, FMs, and quite a few IMs (notably IMs Bercys and Pruess). I came a cross this book by chance, I was looking for a stategy book, and I have always like Gambit Publishers. Therefore, I decided that this book might be an excellant book to buy. Little did I know, I was hitting the jackpot! When I got this book, i started reading it, and thought so highly of it that i read it again. This book is written by multi Dutch Champ, Lars Bo Hansen. PHere is my review and thoughts about the book. ...

Lars Bo Hansen (author of Foundations of Chess Strategy, and Endgame Strategy) does a great job with this book. Bo Hansen, who is a GM, describes the "old fogies" or people as far back as Steinitz over their strategy, he describes the way they play. Lars Bo Hansen breaks it up into Logical attackers (pragmatics), Intuitive attackers (Activists) and Positional into Reflectors and theorists. ... Reflectors are people who are good at preventing active play and Lars Bo Hansen describes playerss like Capablanca, Petrosian, Karpov ect. as "reflectors". He deeply annotates their games and show their strong and weak points.
... Theorists are described as people like Botvinnik, Steinitz ect. and he states their games deeply annotated and points out a weakness in all theorists that you should be able to capitalize on during a games.
... Also for attackers he describes activists as Anand, Shirov, Tal ect. and he does a fine job annotating some of their games including quotes from their own books! He annalyzes their games and gives an overall summory of weaknesses as in all of the other chapters. ... Bo Hansen describes "pragmatics" as people like Alekhine, Kasparov, Fischer ect. He annalyzes some of thier games and how they build up attacks. He says their weaknesses of the game and gives an overall summory of their play.
          ...
Lars Bo Hansen writes about human factors about a touranemnt, and why in the 1985 battle of the Ks match, why Karpov won the first match +5 vs. Kasparov's 0 wins. He explains how Karpov who was more experienced then GK played the game on his terms. Which means he played thed positions that he was good in and focased on Kasparov's weaknesses. He shined the light on many ideas on how some of the top players prepared for their matches against each other (Capablanca v. Alekhine). A great book!!!! ... Overall, a excellant book I would give it 4.5-4.75 stars! Unfortunatelly I can't give it that so I give it 5! An excellant book overall HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!
I can't wait until Lars Bo Hansen's next book (foundations of the endgame) comes out!

          2 out of 5 stars Deceptive title!.......2005-09-06

The first thing you should know about this book is that it isn't about the foundations of chess strategy. The title is a bit of deceptive advertising on the part of the either the author or publisher. (Shame on the guilty party!) For that, a deduction of one star. Rather, the book is concerned with (1) applying certain ideas from business world to the chess board, and in a vaguely related fashion, (2) categorizing chess players according to their style. For those actually interested in learning the foundations of chess strategy, novices should instead turn to Seirawan's "Winning Chess..." series; everybody else should choose from Silman's "How to Reassess Your Chess", the two-part middlegame studies by Keres and Kotov, and the classic "My System" by Aron Nimzovich.

The second thing you should know is that the applied business theories in this book will be of very little use to you unless you already: (1) have a large circle of regular opponents, know their styles, and have access to their games; (2) keep up with chess opening theory in a serious and substantial way; (3) play at a relatively high level of ability. This is not at all a criticism of the book, just a warning that the authors ideas are simply not applicable unless certain conditions are met.

The first part of the book is true to the subtitle - applying business methods to chess training and practice. Here the author has some really intriguing ideas (plus some obvious stuff that has long been in widespread use). For example, one of the things that characterize both modern business and modern chess (at high levels, anyway) is the rapid availability of information. Financial and business data are instantaneously available 24 by 7; similarly chess players can obtain up-to-the-minute game databases and opening theory via the internet. So the external playing field is the same for everybody. The business world has adapted by becoming more attuned to internally directed resources, or internall directed strategies. How does this translate to the chessplayer? LBH tells us.

All right, this stuff is thought-provoking, but the business/chess analogy is flimsy at best, and breaks down pretty fast. Indeed, LBH seems to drop the whole business thing midway through the book. And besides, I'm not sure that these ideas are all that useful in business, either. We know from the author profile that he has lectured at business school, but has he actually tried to run a company? Bringing your internal resources into focus might buy you a tiny edge, but you'll go belly up if you don't have a good product line to begin with. Likewise, with Kasparov: his home preparation gave him an edge, but he won so many games because he was just a better player overall. Should you emulate his home preparation, or his understanding of the game?

Now, the rest of the book contains the author's scheme for categorizing players by their styles, and for illustration, categorizing some the greatest players. Each category is defined by certain traits, including both strengths and weaknesses. The examples are interesting, sometimes astonishing. It must have taken a huge amount of research to come up this material. Nonetheless, I find the entire scheme pretty unconvincing. Quick - which kind of player are you - a Pragmatist? Theoretist? Activist? Reflector? Which was Bobby Fischer? In reality, these categories are totally subjective, and the stylistic differences between great players are terribly overblown. Among us ordinary mortals, the distinctions are just about meaningless. (It has always seemed bizarre to me when a 1400 player calls himself an "attacking player." Maybe he should work on his positional skills and endgames - and stop playing all those goofy gambits.) In truth, Petrosian could beat you to a pulp tactically, and Tal could grind you down in a technical endgame. Sure, at the very highest levels, playing the opponent (versus the board) can be something of an art, especially in a long match series. The rest of us should spend our precious chess improvement time trying to increase our skills in the usual ways.

This book hits about every subject you need to know. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone starting out in management, or to anyone who would like to brush up on their management skills.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Basic Management Skills.......2007-03-14

5 out of 5 stars A must-read for every new or experienced manager.......2006-11-27

I hold a BS in Business Management and thought I had been taught pretty much everything there was to know about business management... was I mistaken! This book should be required text for every business management student. Managing for Dummies is easy to read, easy to understand, and makes implimenting the methods defined in the book easy.

5 out of 5 stars This is just what I was looking for!.......2005-12-18

I'm fairly new to the business world and when the possibility of a promotion to supervisor arose, I knew I had to be ready. While I have a degree, it is not in business. I was looking for a book that would help me a)learn what issues I would have to deal with as a supervisor, b)help me prepare for the interview when they asked "what would you do in this situation" questions and c)teach me some ways to be successful (or at least not fail!).

This book did all of the above. The authors skipped the boring theory of management and delved into real world issues that managers and supervisors face. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good content but too repetetive and too much fluff.......2005-01-24

This is the first dummies book that actually made me feel like a dummy. They actually take the time to explain what a fax machine is! I'm sorry but anyone who does not know what a fax machine is does not have what it takes to be a manager, no matter how many books they read. The content that is there is great, but it is highly repetitive. Just when you think you understand how important it is to reward employees they bring it back towards the end of the book, several times. Ok, we get the point! I got bored reading this and started skimming it, just reading the bold phrases and/or the bullet points. I didn't miss anything. It's full of fluff. If you want a book to pass the time or make you fall asleep, this is a good book. But I just felt a little cheated. They take an intuitively obvious point like how delegation is useful and beat it to death. I also felt like I was watching a commercial for the authors' other books as they seem to mention them every few pages.

Overall the subjects they covered were good. I wish they would cut the fluff and cover more topics. The book could easily be one half the size. I guess it depends on the reader. If you've never managed anyone before, even a 2 person team then this book may be for you. But if you've led others before I think you'll find you already know most of what's in this book. Skim it over at the bookstore and you'll see what I mean..
