Book Description
World Graphic Design is the first-ever survey of contemporary graphic design and designers outside the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, North America, and Australasia. Organized into four main geographical regions or cultural zones - Africa, the Arab World, the Far East and Latin America - and then alphabetically by country and designer/studio within each zone, it focuses on the work being carried out today within the most popular genres of graphic design: posters, book and album covers, packaging and promotion. As graphic design in the developed world becomes increasingly focused on the same small pantheon of designers and the same canonical approaches, World Graphic Design seeks to expose it to the energy, vitality and diversity of a vast body of work that has long co-existed alongside it, but that has hitherto been all but ignored. It is a deliberate attempt to do for graphic design what has been achieved for world music. With an informative critical profile and full contact details of each designer and studio, and over a dozen illustrated examples of their recent output, World Graphic Design is a ground-breaking survey and an essential reference for anyone involved in graphic design worldwide.

Customer Reviews:
Ralp Lauren: The Man, the vision, the style.......2005-10-17
This book was very boring and I love Ralph Lauren. I find it difficult to believe that such an elegant person would use inpolite gutter language....It appeared that the author did not have any love or like for Ralph Lauren...I would love to read a well written book about Ralph Lauren....I don't believe that he talks in that manner and would like to read the elegant approach. I would love a book about his style and creations.
A treat for fashion fans!.......2004-08-23
Fans of this runway king will enjoy this biography. The man behind the threads is as fascinating as his clothing line, and if this book has a fault, it's that there aren't enough photos of his sensational clothes. Lauren's taste and style are legendary - he seems to be one of the few fashion designers who actually likes women! Roll on, Ralph.
Not enough on "the Style".......2003-11-12
I am a Ralph Lauren fan, but like others who've reviewed this title, I was disappointed that there weren't more photos of the beautiful clothes -- the style -- from the archives. I had hoped to see more fashion than what was included. In a recent fashion magazine tribute, for example, there were several pieces of wonderful fashion from the archives -- a military jacket, tuxedo jacket, etc -- that epitomized the Lauren style. This sort of thing was sorely lacking in this book. Just not enough of a good thing, and not as lush as you'd expect.
an airbrushed rehash.......2003-08-24
I was thoroughly disappointed in this book that purports to be an inside look of Ralph Lauren. It is hardly that. The pictures are old and there aren't many outside observers, including folks who wear the clothes, who comment on one of America's leading designer businesses. I also read the Michael Gross book which is far more titillating and detailed...at least you get a fuller portrait of the designer.
Good but could have been better..........2003-02-27
I've been anxiously awaiting this book's release for the past couple of years. It was originally going to be titled Ralph Lauren and the Spirit of America. Rumor had it last year that Ralph previewed the book and demanded a re-write because he didn't like the copy.
It's a nice book, and if you are into Ralph Lauren, you should check it out. However, be aware that it's not up to the standard Ralph himself would have produced. It covers all aspects of Ralph Lauren, from his childhood and personal life to the history of Polo. It is fawning as the reviews say, and the writing is just plain boring at times. Still, it is a good overview of Ralph.
The photographs are where it really disappointed me. There are relatively few, and many of them have been seen before. The pictures are not comprehensive in any sense. It offers reprints of ads (mostly recent, although a few from over the years), a few personal photographs of Ralph and his family, and pictures of the stores (for some reason heavily focused on the Chicago location - almost no photos of the mansion). I would have appreciated a bigger selection from the archives or older ads and a few more "behind the scenes" shots. The shots of Ralph's office and of him in a fitting session are so small you can hardly make anything out of them.
I read the Michael Gross biography first, definitely more readable, but it's mostly second hand gossip. Here you get the sanitized version, in a prettier package. Don't expect any surprises though.

Great shojo title.......2007-03-24
Take a school and a magical world, a fifteen-years-old girl who searches for true love, a bratty but cute little prince, connect them with a star-shaped mirror, add some idiot brother, a lot of misteries and - above all - love... and you'll have a very fresh and funny manga, definitely worth reading!
Plus, Matsuri-sensei's style is gorgeous, rich and sensual at the same time, so you won't be disappointed.
The icing on the cake is Viz's edition: best image editing, lettering, paper quality, image-printing.
I'm very happy with this item

Pretty..........2007-02-26
Tired of manga where guys are surrounded by hot girls who are all in love with him, a la Tenchi Muyo, Love Hina or Ranma 1/2? Try a manga where a girl is surrounded by a bunch of hot guys who love her. Toss in some magic, mirrors, and mayhem, and you have something of an idea of what MeruPuri is like.
Airi Hoshina searches tirelessly for the perfect man. She wants a family life just like the ones in her favorite soap operas. One day, whlie checking her appearance in her antique mirror, a boy climbs out of it. A cute little boy, too. He tells her his name is Aram and that he is a prince. Airi decides to take care of him because he has no place to go, but imagine her surprise when she finds out that he turns into a gorgeous teenager in the darkness, an appearance which can only be reverted by her kiss. This bizarre change is a side effect of a spell placed on Aram by his older brother, Jeile. After meeting Aram, Airi is constantly surrounded by...er...very NICE looking boys, like Aram, Jeile (Aram's goofy older half brother, caster of the spell), Nakaouji ( her prime suitor, the only non-magical one in the bunch), Raz (who doesn't love her but wants revenge on her over something that happened in the past), and Lei(also doesn't love her, just surrounds her because he is Aram's servant), but are any of them the perfect man she's always dreamed of?
Hino-sama's often funny, sometimes touching love/comedy/drama story is made even more appealing by her gorgeous, flowing artwork. The characters are, as a bonus, fleshed out and believeable, even though the story sometimes isn't. And, of course, the guys are all totally gorgeous.
If you like MeruPuri, try Hino-sama's other stateside published manga, Vampire Knight, which, though an entirely horse of a different color when compared to MeruPuri, is still very, very good.
Page Turner.......2006-10-05
I was given this 4 volume set by a 15 yro friend, I am 31. She said I would like it. AND I DO! - to the point that I wish there was an after story or even a movie. A movie off this book would be good.
Story is good; makes one want to turn the page.
Characters are good.
Illustrations are good.
The Best in Fantasy Romance.......2006-04-22
Let me start off by saying that "MeruPuri" is one of the best manga I have ever read. I read the first volume at Borders several months ago and loved it, but I did not want to start buying a new series. Recently though, I found out that it was only four volumes long, so I immediately went out and bought it. And I'm really glad I did.
"MeruPuri" is a story about a girl named Airi who dreams of finding her soul mate and living a simple life with him, raising a family and appreciating the simple things in life. Things are going well, and Airi has found a boy named Nakaoji whom she thinks would be a perfect match for her. But things are about to change. One day, much to her chagrin, Airi's plans are disrupted when a little boy named Aram, who claims to be from the magical kingdom of Astale, appears from her heirloom mirror. He is rude and a little annoying, but cute, and he and Airi quickly become friends. The next day, Airi is shocked to find that a spell has transformed Aram into a handsome young man, and worse, he says that she is his "favorite", and only her kiss can return him to his original self. And it just gets better from there.
I absolutely fell in love with this series, mostly because of the characters and their relationships. Airi is a well-balanced heroine. She is not too whiny or perfect or unbelievably strong like the girls in a lot of the manga I read. I can easily relate to her. And you can't help but love Aram. He's a prince in every way, courageous and fair, but he's still acts childish. The romance between Airi and Aram is really sweet, it really has me hooked. The supporting characters all have personalities of their own and contribute to the story well.
This is also a pretty funny manga, especially when Aram looks like a teenager but acts like a child. Airi too, is humorous in her obsessive quest to find the perfect man.
The art is beautiful, and the story is very interesting and creative. I love all the fantasy elements. It's a bit of a cliched subject, but Matsuri uses original and fresh concepts.
I cannot reccommend "MeruPuri" strongly enough. Everything about it is absolutely wonderful. But don't take my word for it, read it for yourself! You won't be disappointed!
Adorable!.......2006-03-03
At a recent bookfair that my school had I was able to pick up one volume of 4 different series of manga but this one stuck out the most I think after reading them all. There's just something about it. When I put it down I instantly wanted to pick it up and read it all over again. I would say I didn't know why only...well...I do. There are so many reasons.
To start out, Aram, the young prince from a magical kingdom that appears out of Airi's mirror is one of the most interesting characters. Within the first volume of this manga he is a young kid, then turns into a hot older guy, then young again, then older...etc. Throughout the whole thing, he begins to realize (even though in actuality he's really only about 7 years old or so) that he really likes the Heroine of the tale, Airi.
At first he acts rude towards her but mostly because he doesn't know her and he's used to being treated as royalty. To say the least, his little "child moments" are the cutest (and most hilarious) things in this whole volume. The fact that he doesn't understand much about Airi's world except that when you go to carnivals you get floaty round things (balloons) and you watch 'Sparkle Rangers' on the Telly vishion (TV)is what keeps you laughing.
Anyway, besides the comedy, the art in this book is amazing. You can tell that Matsuri Hino put a lot of time into it and it makes it just THAT much more enjoyable to read.
I can tell that this series is going to become one of my very favorites so I would recommend it most definately!

Quick Way to the Bard.......1999-12-18
Used as a teaching tool, "Infinite Insults and Jests" allows students to instantly get into the richness of Shakespeare's language. They can trade insults with me or each other in a fun and stimulating way, all the while using the sounds of Elizabethan language!

Book Description
Eighteenth-century French readers who wanted to keep up with political and literary trends, had to rely on books and journals imported from abroad. French writers, such as Voltaire and Rousseau, also depended on foreign firms to get their works in print. Grub Street Abroad demonstrates the importance of extraterritorial publishing for the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. By placing the periphery at the centre of the stage, it highlights neglected cosmopolitan aspects of the French Enlightenment and points to forces which undercut Bourbon claims of cultural hegemony. Firms serving French markets from abroad are viewed as part of a far-flung communications network which comprised a relatively autonomous, independent field of operations. Topics covered include the publishing and editing of francophone journals and clandestine manuscripts; the emergence of the book review and the editorial board; the reliance of the philosophes upon foreign firms; the cosmopolitan outlook of so-called `Grub Street hacks'.

Book Description
The B-s Universe is the first and only book about the legendary Athens, Georgia based rock band. The book celebrates years of the groups history in words and hundreds of rare photographs. Also included is a complete discography in photos along with the bands comments on every song.
Customer Reviews:
Excuse me miss Crabapple..........2005-11-29
As the author of the book, I feel the need to defend it against Miss Crabapple's review. I never promised "one million" photos, how absurd, but many of the pics have never been widely seen before as they came from fans, myself, and band members. Kate Pierson sent me her "archives" so the book is loaded with many never seen items and memorabilia--not from only my own collection but from fans on six continents!! (all but Antarctica).
And, I assume Cindy didn't want a wedding photo in the book, I thought it rude to ask as she's a fairly private person. Kate is not a snot, and they are all likeable.
So, the book isn't perfect, but it took five years to get together and I've never seen another rock 'n roll book of this scope. So, if you like the band, you'll love the book!
(I had to rate it to submit the review so I give it one star for each year of my life it took to get together!)
Thanks for reading.
A Bit of a Disappointmen.......2004-02-23
For such an expensive book, I expected to see some REAL treats. I was promised something like a million unpublished photos, and rare artifacts. The rare items turned out to be mostly posters, buttons, and flyers from the author's collection. Many of the photos have been seen, and other than the inside-story on the songs, there are no great tales here. The author slobbers over the band so much that it gets annoying. We hear all about Cindy (the only somewhat-likeable one) and her wedding, but aren't treated to one photo. Kate, the redhead who strikes me as a real snot, seemed to have dumped her hubby as soon as the smell of fame wafted under her nose. He vanishes without a trace from this book. We have to listen to the usual PeTA chant, but most Bs fans aren't vegetarians. Speaking of the name of the band, it is always seen as "B-52's." Anyone else notice this is grammatically incorrect? Ah well, they made some great party songs that I still dance to, especially the first 2 albums, and I never take anything musicians say seriously anyway. Only for the diehard fan with extra money, pretty expensive for the casual fan.
The Ultimate B-52's Biography!.......2002-08-16
I totally applaud Mats Sexton for all of the hard work that he put into this fantastic biography of one of the world's best rock bands: The B-52's!
This full-color, hard-cover book contains detailed biographies of each member of the B-52's: Kate Pierson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Ricky Wilson (deceased). It also contains tons of photographs (color and black & white), many of which had never been previously published.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is its chronological order: you can read about the activities and performances of the band from their first official performance (Valentine's Day, 1977 at a friend's house in Athens, GA), all the way through the year 2001. All of the performances for each year between 1977 and 2001 are listed, including TV guest appearances such as their appearances on Saturday Night Live.
Another fantastic part of this book is that it describes and shows pictures of all of the B-52's albums, singles, and other merchandise (including promotional items) that have been produced since 1977. It also gives information about songs that the B-52's either never recorded or never released, such as the song "Killer B's" that they performed a few times in their beginning.
If you're a B-52's fan (like I am), then this book is a total must-have item! If I could give this book a rating of 10 stars, I would!
Many, many thanks go to Kate, Fred, Keith, Cindy and Ricky for making some of the best and most fun music in the world!
Great book for B-52 fans!.......2002-06-01
This is a great book for B-52's fan, those interested in the Athens Georgia music scene, and anyone who remembers rocking down to Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, and Love Shack.
Great information about the early days of the band, and their tragedies and triumphs in their rise to rock n' roll stardom.
Best parts - the bios of the band members, the rare photos(!!!), the background about how some of the songs were written.
Very interesting insights about the music industry as well.
If you're a fan - get this book!
Customer Reviews:
All Planescape Campaigns Should own this book.......1999-11-04
This book expands upon the factions so much from the box set. Besides DM stuff like stats for the factols and other important factioneers, it gives tips for roleplaying and excellent detail on the philosphies. Because the factions are central to the entire Planescape feel, it is extremely important to know them well. Even if your campaign has already been through Faction War (as mine has) I would definitely suggest buying this. It is perfect for bringing up past events and seeing what the future holds for these philosophers with clubs.
This is the essential guide for DMs and Players both.......1999-05-19
I just started reading this book yesterday and it is the best planescape accessory out there. Ever wondered just who the Factols are and what they act like? Is one of your characters having trouble playing a dustman? Want to visit the shattered temple but don't know whats there? Ever wondered where the Sighners came from anyway? Just how should those bleaker NPCs act? How do I join the anarchists? Or maybe you just want expanded faction abilities or want to know the personal plans of one of the factions. All these things and more are included in the Factols Manifesto. Along with a huge collection of great art that you won't find anywhere else including maps of each faction headquarters and a portrait of each factol! Bottom line this is a must buy. If you're a DM and don't have this book yet shame on you!
The factols... uncovered.......1999-05-07
This is one of the golden books of Planescape. The descriptions of the factions, the factols and their activities are great. Much cheaper than the other Planescape books (being 160 pages). It's filled with full-color art by DiTerlizzi and has everything you need for the low-down on the Factions. I don't think I'll keep talking about this book, just get it. You won't be dissappointed.
A very recomendable book for Sigil dwelers.......1999-04-08
Its an excelent book for players and DMs, there are complete and interesant descriptions of every faction in sigil, and it makes every player to understand the ideology of his faction, i recomend to read the interviews with the factols they are excelent.
Not for any sod..........1998-10-11
Going barmy about the factions way of seeing through everything? Well, the dark of the plane's reason to be has become available for everybody to get, that is, if you dare. The Factol's Manifesto has interviews with the whole of the factols, their plans, and, what is most important in the planes, how to live and see thru them, but, hey, not any sod can read this!
this book is REALLY imprtant if you're planning to be a good DM at the planes, I was sad when I saw that there was too little of the factions philosophy in the campaign setting, lots of doubts hung around, but now, you can give the most important part to it, the philosophy interaction, the real flavor of the planes, to be open to that whole circus of living things out there, a MUST for any player or DM who really want to get the plane's reason to be.

In The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership, University of Southern California President Steven Sample offers up a refreshing perspective on the characteristics of a successful leader. Some of Sample's prescriptions: try reading Machiavelli's The Prince instead of The New York Times, learn to work for those who work for you, and "Anything worth doing at all is worth doing poorly. It may be worth more if it's done well, but it's worth something if it's done poorly." This book is not just for CEO's: middle management and anyone interested in promoting good leadership will benefit as well. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
In this offbeat approach to leadership, college president Steven B. Sample-the man who turned the University of Southern California into one of the most respected and highly rated universities in the country-challenges many conventional teachings on the subject. Here, Sample outlines an iconoclastic style of leadership that flies in the face of current leadership thought, but a style that unquestionably works, nevertheless. Sample urges leaders and aspiring leaders to focus on some key counterintuitive truths. He offers his own down-to-earth, homespun, and often provocative advice on some complex and thoughtful issues. And he provides many practical, if controversial, tactics for successful leadership, suggesting, among other things, that leaders should sometimes compromise their principles, not read everything that comes across their desks, and always put off decisions.

A Practical Primer.......2007-01-12
Steven Sample has led USC for the past 15 years. He is by training an engineer and probably holds the patent on the control circuit that runs your dishwasher. This book is not about leadership theory, it states what Steven Sample believes works for him and why he believes that. Many of the concepts work anywhere, others are dependent upon the leaders situation both within the organization and the type of organization. If you are looking for something that restates current pop management buzzwords of the day this isn't it.
This book for me had many "Aha! I never thought of it that way type of moments" and I've been a successful leader for over 30 years with a Masters degree.
One Of A Kind........2006-03-17
Steve Sample is a very unusual University President.
The most surprising aspect of his career is that he wasn't run off.
Sadly, I do not think a Steve Sample could happen again in the current environment where unorthodox men of subtle mind, unusual patience, and serious commitment to achievement are run out by lesser men and women of banal sensibilities.
The Contrarian's Guide to Leadership has its appeal to Contrarians. A conformist will never become such a person.
The Conformist will hit .225 and the Contrarian will always be slamming off-speed pitches into the power alleys.
Sample is an example of the best of what has happened in leadership the last 30 years: the migration of engineering discipline into the mainstream of executive management.
But Sample is what most engineers are not: an obviously selfless kind of leader who can bring to bear his immense abilities on executive management because he obviously doesn't need the applause of his public.
Perhaps the best advice Sample gives in his book is the confidence he places in quality of input rather than the hectic and insipid filling of one's mind with contemporary trends.
Sample tells us to read and re-read the "supertexts." I have the happy experience of daily indulging as deeply and often as I can into the Scriptures, so it's especially invigorating to me for someone of Sample's caliber and achievement to boldly tell others that such a practice is essential for leading others.
In the final analysis, it doesn't matter a lot what I say about this book, because Sample's achievements in his field of endeavor are most remarkable, and speaks beyond my plaudits.
After all, USC is not your average college.
I can tell you this book is an interesting read, and if it was taken seriously by leaders in higher education, we'd be in a lot less trouble as a nation.
A must for college and university planners.......2005-10-23
The literature on leadership is a little like outer space: vast and mostly empty. This little book is one of the brighter stars. Begin reading Chapter 11, the Case Study. Sample's record of achievement in this chapter will open your mind and heart to principles that are eloquently argued in the rest of the book. While the principles apply to all types of organizations, academic insitutions will get the most from them. Every research university in America can benefit from Sample's experience, wisdom, and exemplary leadership.
Fresh Insignts.......2005-09-08
What do you think it would take to be a great leader is the challenge that Steven Sample's tasks our most inventive critical thinking skills. He says leadership can be taught and learned and that it is a study that is open to investigation and change. He challenges us to be an intellectual and independent thinker.
"Think grey, see double, never completely trust an expert, read what your competition doesn't read, never make a decision that you can reasonably delegate to a subordinate, ignore sunk costs, work for those who work for you, know which hill you are willing to die on, shoot your own horse, sometimes allow the led to lead the leader and know the difference between being leader and doing leader"
First chapter starts with "Thinking Grey, and Free". Sample's basic tenet? Don't form an opinion about an important matter (i.e. suspending judgement) until you've heard all the relevant facts. Refuse to indulge in black and white or binary thinking and always keep one's mind open to the possibilities. Maintain your intellectual independence and not feel pressured into the "herd" mentality. Then he even pushes the envelope further by asking us to stay with the outrageous idea even to the point of being mentally painful to do so.
Artfull Listening is his second chapter and is important in the acquiring of new ideas and gathering and accessing information which he dubbs as the process of "seeing double" from both the other's point of view while maintaining your own.
Leadership for the rest of us.......2005-05-20
I would highly recommend this book to any leader.
Some of the most challenging ideas from the book were the idea of thinking gray (which is the discipline of not forming an opinion about an important matter until you've heard all the relevant facts) and reading the super texts.
This book further established in my mind the importance of the supertexts and reading old books.
The final chapter describing the transformation of the University of Southern California under Sample's leadership was excellent and inspiring.
Most striking from that chapter for church leaders was the decision to keep USC in a rough part of L.A. rather than flee to Malibu or Orange County. They stayed put and made a positive inpact on the surrounding neighborhood. They became good neighbors and radically changed the surrounding area. Sounds like something churches should be doing. But how many times do churches flee to the suburbs and abandon the inner-cities?
