How We Talk : American Regional English Today
ASIN: 0395780322 |
Amazon.com
Jim "the Mad Monk" Crotty has spent a dozen years on the road traveling around the United States, getting under the skin of the communities in order to discover what makes their wild hearts tick. The fruit of these labors is Monk: The Mobile Magazine, a singularly quirky quarterly publication, coproduced with co-Monk Michael Lane, which spotlights a different community in each issue. How to Talk American is the outgrowth of Monk's hilarious "How to Talk" column, and if you thought you knew how to speak American, well, fegedaboutit (New York), that's monkey (Kentucky). In addition to the lowdown on speaking like an Alaskan, Las Vegan, New Yorker, and Seattleite, Crotty gives up the verbal goods on copspeak, Deadheadian, diner lingo, ecobabble, gutter-punk, Hollywoodese, street slang, and trucker talk. And that's just the beginning. To whet your appetite, these words all mean "cool": crazy, cold-blooded, phat, tight, cuspy, total family kine, fierce, full on, hella, sick, raw, tonar, yar. And these mean "not cool at all": schwag, jurassic, skank. Or at least they did yesterday.
Book Description
For twelve years Jim Crotty has been traveling this great country in his roving Monkmobile (don't ask) and in the process has discovered how Americans really speak, from coast to coast and border to border - from Bible Belt Banter to Vegas Vernacular, from Redneck Rhetoric to New England Niceties: Things you need to know about Boston before you go there: Quahog (say co-hog) - oil-slickened red-tide clam, prized by Bostonians for its taste; Santa Fe semantics: Blue corn - sacred food, sold as chips; Seattle-speak: Partly sunny - partly cloudy Crotty's savvy and often hilarious region-by-region guide to the way we talk provides a dead-on (and sometimes too strange) indication of how we think, how we behave, and what we hold dear.

A must for " exchange students".......2005-02-12
I bought this book when I had foreign exchange students. It was hard to explain:
1. " thank you for sharing": definition for I've heard enough...
2. "What I hear you saying": Definition: I ( host mom) don't really hear what you are saying. I hear how I think you ought to say it. A device to get the questioner ( exchange student) to speed along so the faciliator (me) can speak some more.
3. And then I bought it too.. cause I didn't know what the definition of a dork is ( a cool person)
Thanks, I needed that.
Fun book.......2000-11-01
I enjoyed reading all sections of this book, but especially the parts about the places I've been. It included phrases from my birthplace of Chicago that I didn't even realize the rest of the country doesn't use. For example, "gapers delay": the traffic jam caused by people slowing or stopping to stare at something, like an accident. My only complaint is that his description was too narrow. In Crotty's definition, a gapers delay is caused one particular billboard which I'm sure is gone by now. But believe me, the gaper's delay is still there somewhere.
Savvy, irreverent, but accurate journey into slang-world.......1998-09-11
"How to Talk American" is an irreverent but surprisingly accurate (at least based on my experience) guide to the local slang and terminology of various American cities, regions, and subcultures. Crotty's book delves deep into the lingo of places and people that the reader would not otherwise experience (no matter who that reader is). Perhaps the main value of this book, however, is its demonstration that, despite the rapid homogenization (or McDonaldization) of our society, there is still a rich supply of local terms, or words shared by a limited group of people with shared interests, and that these terms have not (yet) been appropriated by the larger culture. Surprisingly, these terms are for the most part actually interesting and funny, especially when viewed through the eyes of the roving and perceptive author. If this book has a weakness, it lies in the plot and character development. Wait--there is no plot and no character development--it's a guide to slang! OK, if this book has a weakness, it is that at times the author is overambitious and includes some terms better left out and fails to focus on a smaller and perhaps more representative sample. But that fault can be readily forgiven. It's a good, if not a quick, read, and it's absolutely indispensable for anyone who has more than a passing interest in the state of American language.
great fun . . .especially liked the "midwest" section.......1998-07-16
this compilation of phrases, slang, and witicisms really tickled me! Especially enjoyed the midwest section as I was born in Omaha, NB and raised (reared?) in Indiana and Iowa . . .fun!

Product Description
Do you dream of being a film director? This book tells the stories of 14 moviemakers who got their projects financed, made and into theaters -- all without the help of a trust fund or deep Hollywood connections. They also offer advice for aspiring filmmakers hoping to follow in their footsteps.
Book Description
Pioneering film director Roger Corman is a fascinating study in contrasts. A flamboyant artist, the original king of the exploitative film has filled his movies with images of blood-sucking vampires, rampaging biker gangs, vigilante strippers, and abducting aliens. A coldly efficient businessman, Corman has produced 400 to 500 films on shoestring budgets, all on his own terms, and has seen nearly every one of his projects make money.
In the process, Corman has become the role model for today's independent filmmaker, laying the groundwork for the success of directors like Quentin Tarantino. On close inspection, The list of Corman proteges reads like a who's who of motion pictures - John Sayles, James Cameron, Dennis Hopper, Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, and Jonathan Demme to name just a few.
Author Beverly Gray, Roger Corman's story editor and development executive for nearly a decade, takes you behind the cameras and into the heart of Cormanville for a first-hand, insider's look at the man and the mogul. From his humble beginnings in Detroit to present day, Gray traces the career of her legendary former boss. Interviews with eighty friends and associates of Roger Corman's provide a comprehensive private and public perspective on this soft-spoken giant of the cinema.
Customer Reviews:
Kudos from Creating Characters author Marisa D'Vari.......2005-09-03
This fascinating "biography" is really a savvy "how to" book that belongs on the shelf of every screenwriter, aspiring producer, director, and development executive -- and everyone else who loves films and craves to know the secrets of Hollywood's most colorful mogul.
I found it fun to read as a realistic "behind the scenes" glimpse of what it takes to be a profitable mogul, such as the way Corman hired young cheap "promising" talent instead of going for experience. Directors fresh out of film school reading this book, for example, can get a good feel for the mindset and financial situation of producers they interview with. Screenwriters will learn how Corman and team (Gray had been his development executive) managed to write and produce so many successful films quickly.
Few books reveal the inner machinations of a successful producer so intimately. Gray, a screenwriting teacher at UCLA, has done a spectacular job of showcasing the life story of an intruiging man through more than eighty interviews and via her own experience.
Corman Exposed.......2005-08-24
Wow! Talk about switching personalities! This amazing biographer can emit the style of the person she is writing about to really give you a flavor of the personality. And of course, she spent time working for him, so you are privy to more of a view. Written somewhat bruskly like Roger's personality, you really gain insight into his life and what made him the person he is. Contrast this book with Beverly's biography of Ron Howard and you see some of the exceptional talent of this lady. A great read!
Roger Corman:.......2005-03-20
I have to agree with the other five-star reviews. "Roger Corman: Blood-Sucking Vampires, Flesh-Eating Cockroaches, and Driller Killers" is the best book on the subject, the subject being the most unique American studio head in film history.
Beverly Gray really paints a nuanced picture of Corman and never panders to the fans, the haters, or her old boss Corman himself. Though it's impossible to pull back the curtains entirely and see into a man's soul, Gray seems to have at least pulled back one side, giving us as much a glimpse as is possible without telepathy.
Storywise, Corman is, as always, fascinating, and Gray's perfectly detailed retelling of his story is the best yet written.
Driller Killers and Roger Corman, Of Course.......2004-06-08
(...)
Gray's biography--fun as it is-- is more than a story about a man who is arguably one of Hollywood's most idiosyncratic moguls. It is a chronicle that parallels that of The Great Depression, World War II, the growth of the film industry and Los Angeles itself. We meet again celebrities we haven't thought about in years like the adorable dimpled Jon Davison, the memorable Vincent Price and even run across pop culture icons like Frank Gorshin.
Occasionally this book is burdened with glitz-town detail that only a dedicated film buff might adore but these moments are rare. Like a super hero, Corman--now 75 and still going--is resilient because he is multi-faceted. The same can be said for screenwriter cum UCLA instructor and journalist Beverly Gray. The two seem admirably paired in that way. Gray uses her many experiences and talents to tell the story of a man of many parts.
(...)
Roger Corman: An Unauthorized Biography.......2003-11-12
Beverly Gray's superbly written, readable, and extensively documented biography of Roger Corman maintained my interest and gave me an understanding of his complex personality and career. The book also gives an insider's view into many Hollywood personalities, including a number of his disciples, cohorts, and acquaintances. The insightful prevailing theme of the book is Corman's internal struggle between his artistry and his bottom-line business concern, resulting in settling for small but memorable low-budget achievement rather than for potential professional greatness as a filmmaker. Ms. Gray draws on the personal insights she has gained on Corman from her almost ten years as his development executive. She also does a remarkable job in presenting the enormous multiplicity of his sources and story lines, including the anti-establishment themes of the 1960's and 1970's.

A Great Resource for Music Theory!.......2005-01-06
I'm relatively new to the bass guitar, but have played trombone for about 30 years and never really learned any music theory because it seemed so abstract. Even recently, I've been discouraged in my bass lessons, as I didn't feel that I was gaining a deep understanding of Music Theory. After reading through the 45 pages or so last night, I feel like I'm well on my way to tying it all together. I've browsed through the remainder of the book, and believe that this will be a great resource in fulfilling my New Year's resolution to learn all my scales this year. A friend at work browsed through it and says that it is exactly what I need to take my bass playing to the next level. I highly recommend this book!
Boy, was I wrong!.......2004-01-13
I spent time with the Bass EncycloMedia and am very impressed!
As a professional bass player for over 30 years, I didn't think I had much to learn from the Bass EncycloMedia. Boy, was I wrong! This book is filled with practical and highly musical techniques and information that will benefit bass players who have passed beyond the "beginner" stage. The book is written the way most bass players think.....visually instead of in notation. This is a great addition to the library of bass players of any style and any ability level.
I would also highly recommend getting a set of Fretboard Flashcards for 4 or 5 string bass.

Lots of explanatory prose, plenty of lines, this book is also huge. about the size of a college textbook. This review by John Watson sums it up much better than I can:

An excellent chess book about the Dragon.......2006-01-22
Suppose you have Black in a chess game that begins 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3. What ought you do now? Well, I don't play this position for Black. But the most obvious moves are 5...a6, 5...e6, or 5...Nc6, after which White has a small edge in practice. White has a bigger edge after 5...g6. That move is the infamous Dragon Defence, and it is the topic of this fine book. Yes, 5...g6 is playable. But as this book shows, Black has to be prepared for a dangerous attack.
The usual White reply is 6 Be3, leading to the Yugoslav attack. After 6...Bg7 7 f3 Nc6 8 Qd2 0-0, White often plays 9 Bc4, which leads to complications in which Black has to be awfully careful. Dearing spends nearly 150 pages on this move. If I had to take Black's position here, I'd continue 9...Bd7 10 0-0-0 Rb8, (the "Chinese Dragon") a move the author gives six interesting pages of analysis on.
Of course, 9 Bc4 is not the only line Black needs to be prepared for. Maybe the biggest problem with the entire Dragon is that Black is apt to run into a very well-prepared line from White, who will confront Black with something ideally suited to White's particular style. Maybe it will be 9 0-0-0, which I think is White's deadliest move and has excellent results for White in practice. Dearing has over 50 pages on this move. I find this whole line scary for Black, and much easier to play for White. In the Dragon, it seems that Black not only has to be prepared for an attack in which one false move is fatal, but also for sudden White decisions to get into a roughly equal endgame of White's choice.
The author also discusses other strong White alternatives, such as 7 0-0, 6 Bc4, and 6 g3, all of which Black has to be prepared for. And there are a few pages on 7 f3 Nc6 8 Qd2 0-0 9 g4, the "positional" approach, which gives White an easy game in a different way.
While I think that, objectively, the 9 0-0-0 line is the best choice for White, I play 6 f4 (the Levenfish). Dearing spends seven pages on this move, and says that a well-prepared Dragon player should blast the Levenfish off the board. But I think that White can get equality against a well-prepared opponent. And that makes it all worthwhile, because if Black isn't well-prepared, White is probably going to win fast. That's why players who are under Master strength (or are playing opponents who are less than Master strength) sometimes try it.
I first tried the Levenfish decades ago, as an unrated player in the third game of my very first chess tournament (a Swiss, in which I had lost my first two games). The game went: 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 g6 6 f4 Bg2 7 e5 Nfd7 (as Dearing mentions, 7...Nh5 is essential here, and just about anything else tends to lose quickly) 8 e6 fxe6 9 Nxe6 Bxc3+. At this point, I sort of wished I could move my Queen like a Knight, as Qxc3 would threaten both c8 and h8. My opponent waited for me to make the obvious recapture, bxc3, but I hesitated and finally played 10 Bd2! (the first exclam move of my chess career) 10...Bxd2+ 11 Qxd2 Qb6 12 Qc3, after which I won easily.
Of course, Black does not have to play 6...Bg7. There's also 6...Nbd7, after which White's best choice may be 7 Nf3, keeping the threat of e5 alive. And Dearing recommends 6...Nc6, which is Black's usual reply. After this move, White almost always plays 7 Nxc6, but I play 7 Bb5 Bd7 8 Bxc6 bxc6 9 e5. Even here, Black can hang material: I once defeated a Candidate Master after he played 9...dxe5 10 fxe5 Nd5? with 11 Qf3 Bg7 12 Nxd5 cxd5 13 0-0 0-0 14 Qxd5 (against 10...Ng4, I intended to play 11 e6 Bxe6 12 Nxe6). Dearing's choice for Black is 9...Nd5 10 Nxd5 (I think White is equal after 10 exd6) 10...cxd5 11 Qf3 e6 12 0-0 Bg7, but I think White can hold this position with 13 b3, and get an advantage if Black makes a mistake.
If you simply must play the Dragon, I recommend this book to you. I also recommend it to those of us who would prefer to slay dragons than be served up as dragon meat on some restaurant special.
Dragon fans rejoice!.......2006-01-08
If you like the Dragon, or are just learning it, then this is the book for you. Well written and enjoyable. I look forward to his future books.

Sellout "Brand" or just plain "Bland"? In Lovemarks, advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi CEO Kevin Roberts delves deep into what mysteries lie behind the long-term success and unwavering customer loyalty for a can of Coke or a pair of Levi's, ultimately concluding that Love is the answer, and without some emotional connection to a product, it will dry up like a generic raisin in the sun. Enter Lovemarks, the new marketing buzzword, which will likely be bandied about at board meetings as vigorously as The Tipping Point.
But before Roberts can get to what in fact a Lovemark means in the worlds of advertising and marketing, he takes us on a virtual tour of his CV. There was his first post at Mary Quant in London, then the gig as New Products Manager of Gillette International in the Middle East, on to CEO of Pepsi in Canada, and later the same role at Lion Nathan in New Zealand. The list goes on, and so does Roberts--on and on--about his achievements and experience building brand awareness and shaking things up (he famously machine-gunned a vending machine at a presentation for a spot on the evening news). More importantly, he succeeds at blasting away the smoke and mirrors that might prevent a creative genius (or an ordinary consumer) from seeing what makes Superman the most beloved super-hero of all time.
Despite the somewhat egocentric approach to taking us there (he is, after-all, a pretty smart guy), we arrive at Roberts's point beautifully, and see what he sees: "That human attention has become our principle currency." And that, in these times, forming long-term emotionally charged relationships with customers is the only way to make a product weather the long haul. And while Roberts speaks to us in a spirited, conversational manner (that makes Lovemarks a pleasure to read), the design of the book seems to work against him, as convoluted typography and a general lack of layout consistency give the book a visually amateurish look. --Christene Barberich
Book Description
Tom Peters, one of the most influential business thinkers of all time, described the first edition of Lovemarks: the future beyond brands as "brilliant." He also announced it as the "Best Business Book" published in the first five years of this century. Now translated into fourteen languages, with more than 150,000 copies in print, Lovemarks is back in a revised edition featuring a new chapter on the peculiarly human experience of shopping. The new chapter, Diamonds in the Mine, is an insightful collection of ideas for owners of small stores and operators of superstores, for producers and consumers. So forget making lists! Shopping, says Kevin Roberts, is an emotional event. With this as a starting point, he looks at the history of shopping and how it has changed so dramatically over the last ten years. Using the Lovemark elements of Mystery, Sensuality, and Intimacy, Roberts delves into the secrets of success that can be used to create the ultimate shopping experience. "Ideas move mountains, especially in turbulent times. Lovemarks is the product of the fertile-iconoclast mind of Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi. Roberts argues vociferously, and with a ton of data to support him, that traditional branding practices have become stultified. What's needed are customer Love affairs. Roberts lays out his grand scheme for mystery, magic, sensuality, and the like in his gloriously designed book Lovemarks." (Tom Peters)
Customer Reviews:
creative book.......2007-08-03
Enjoyed the book and unique format made it a breeze to read. Probably better suited for marketing professionals or business owners in retail.
Would you pay for an advertising flyer?.......2007-05-12
Well, you will if you buy this book! If you're in the industry there's nothing in this book you don't already know! If you're not in the ad industry, then by all means, go ahead and buy it so you can see how clever it is to publish a self-serving eye candy full of propaganda for Saatchi and Saatchi and Kevin Roberts concealed as a book about branding!
Changed My Perspective.......2007-03-13
I highly recommend this book. The format makes it entertaining to read. The concepts are fresh and crisp. The writing style of Kevin Roberts, is as if you are an old friend -- sharing a glass of wine over dinner with him.
Good principles about how to build great brands.......2007-03-12
I really enjoyed this book, building emotion based links with your customers it's a necessary task in the competitive business scenario of nowadays, and Kevin Roberts explains a framework of this, with examples of how many successful brands have done it and he explains the principles that drives his personal view of the future of brands too.
Reading the book it's a stunning visual experience, almost every page has a lot of pictures that makes you understand clearly what it's talking about (a picture is a thousand words worth).
I believe that every category needs a very specific combination of the values shown in the book, but that it's not deepened in the book and I missed, because it can make you understand the emotion that drives every product in every category. Well, I think that the latter it's our work!
Brilliant Packaging but Not New!.......2007-01-23
I have met Kevin Roberts and had a chance to chat with him about the "Lovemark" concept when he was giving a speech in Istanbul. I think he is a colorful and brilliant individual who has managed to package some great marketing principles that age back to Bernbach into a great new concept. Though many principles in the book are not fresh to those who are not a novice in marketing literature, I think the term "Lovemark" is brilliant in itself. The design of the book is great with lots of colorful pictures and helpful examples. You sometimes feel that many of the examples are overused and the book is self serving, but it is worth to spend some time with the Lovemark concept.
I have seen an interview with Kevin in Ad Age about how they launched this book to recruit new business into their agency. I think it is a great new business tool and brilliant strategy to lure customers to their shop. I personally think "the HOW" part is missing, how are you going to make your brand into a Lovemark remains a question.
If you are interested in entering into the hearts of customers not just their wallets, you should definetly lend an ear to Kevin.
