The immediate question that arises with a book entitled 100 Best Album Covers is, of course, "Says who?" Wisely, authors Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell have anticipated such widespread suspicion. In their thorough and amusing introduction, the two former cover designers (of Hipgnosis) go on at length about potentially qualifying factors (innovation, humor, bizarreness, minimalism, audacity) and possible reasons for nonselection (popularity, dull illustration, ugly technique, emotional offensiveness). But, they concede, what it really comes down to is a matter of taste--with a bit of nostalgia thrown into the mix.
In the end, the mysterious (and eternally debatable) selection formula matters not. The history, inspiration, and technical design details provided for each of the 100 covers that made the cut serve as reason enough for their inclusion. Did you know that Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy cover was inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's novel, Childhood's End?? Or that the burning man on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here was actually on fire (and in a bit of danger)? Or that an original idea for Supertramp's Breakfast in America was to depict cereal and milk rolling through the Grand Canyon? Tasty tidbits like these, along with quotes from designers, photographers, and the musicians themselves, make this a must-have volume for music fans--yes, even if your personal top 100 covers would constitute an entirely different collection. --Brangien Davis

The top 100?.......2002-12-24
Although the information about each album cover is intriguing, I'd be hard pressed to agree that these are the top 100 best (or creative) album covers of all time. As a graphic designer, I feel that some of covers are downright dull - definately not worthy of the title bestowed upon them.
You'll Keep Going Back For More.......2002-01-13
I have owned this book for several years and I finally decided to write a review on it now. Why did I wait so long? Well, this is not the kind of book that you'll likely pick up right away and read all the way through. In fact, I constantly find myself going back to this book whenever I'm bored. It's fun, even after many years, to flip to an album cover and read all of the interesting details on the concept, artist, design, and history. The book is laid out in such a fashion that each time you look at a represented cover, you discover new details and gain a new perspective.
As to the question of whether or not these are truly the best 100 album covers of all time, I really can't say. In fact, in that regard I think the title is misleading because it forces the reader into thinking this is some type of a ranking or countdown. In fact, it is nothing of the sort. This is simply a really cool collection of 100 great album covers and their history. And, in that respect, this book really delivers.
Buy it today. I promise you, it will never get dull.
The 100 Best???.......2002-01-05
There are so many albums out there, but I have to question some of the album covers that were chosen.
I think that part of the problem with this book is that it tries to catagorize the covers, which is the downfall. For some of the catagories, it seems that they are reaching on covers just so they have enough album covers to sustain that catagory.
I also think there were albums, too numerous to miss.
That all being said, the information was very interesting and it was good to see that one time period or genre was not dwelled upon.
Hastily thrown together.......2001-03-26
At least half of the featured album covers were familiar to me, and the book did contain interesting and informative snippets of information. However I was a bit dismayed that some album covers were overlooked, memorable covers by such popular bands as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Meatloaf, ELO, Boston, Blue Oyster Cult, and Iron Maiden (for their frightening Eddie character that graced so many of their albums).
As an art book, this book is a joke. I have many coffee-table and art books, and "100 Best Album Covers" is the only one I have that centers some featured graphics in the CENTER of the book. By that, I mean that a picture is centered in a two page spread, which runs the spine of the book right down the middle of the picture. All of the other art books I have put a graphic on one page so that you can see it (unless it's oversized). The pictures here aren't oversized and would easily fit on one page. It's hard to appreciate even a nifty album cover when you can only see the outer edges of it clearly. Far too many of the album covers are centered on the spine this way. The emphasis in this book is on the commentary it seems, and not so much the picture. Emerson Lake & Palmer's "Brain Salad Surgery" (an impressive work by the famous artist Giger) isn't quite as breathtaking when you have to pry and bend the book open and crack the spine to see it.
The publishers should revise this book and reissue it.
Great Book. No other way to describe it.......2001-01-30
I can't say anything more than this book rules. It has definitely the best 100 album covers.

3 Stars, with reasons.......2006-11-02
I've worn beaded wampum belts for a long, long time now. Ever since I saw that documentary on the way of the Iroquois, Blazing Saddles, I've been obsessed with their belts and their culture. They're sporty, practical, and downright indestructible. (the belts, not the Iroqouis, thank god) With that being said, I was a little disappointed with this one.
I'd been familiar with Ray Tehanetorens' other books and admired his work in the past. Namely his third book, "Squaws on the Halfshell: The Iroquois Kama Sutra". Fascinating. That one really cleared up a lot of confusion Wanda and I had over which end goes up during the execution of the "Squatting Elk". (it's the hooves, always keep the hooves pointing north) We keep the book within arm's reach, as we never know when we'll need to use it. It's been sitting on the tractor tire we call a coffee table since its release.
However, I really feel that Tehanetoren dropped the ball on this one. Many of the pieces featured in the book are misidentified. Example: on page 36, the caption under the turquois and ratbone tongue seperator states that it was originally used by tribes in the NORTHERN Dakotas. Hah! Anyone with half a brain knows its of the kind found in the CENTRAL DAKOTAS! This oversight is almost unforgivable. It doesn't end there.
The back cover displays what it claims to be a ball-clamp fashioned from fresh water crocodile teeth. Wrong again. The Iroquois never practiced ball-clamping. That is straight Illinois Sioux behavior there. Any boy scout worth his neckerchief can tell ya that.
Still, I have to give this one a solid 3 stars, even if based solely on the couple of little details he DID get right.
I was really pleased to find the text of the book is in my favorite font, 19 Times Mongoloid Italics Bold. You just don't see that one used much anymore. (outside of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and NAMBLA newsletters) Not really sure why. Maybe the sheer size of the font discourages its use, in that it only allows 4 words per printed page.
Also, I found the book's Introduction by David Duke to be a daring, if ill-advised, choice.
Good History and Descriptions.......2006-07-04
An excellent book on the use and meaning of wampum belts by the Iroquois. I found the descriptions and history of the belts fascinating. There does not appear to be very much written on this subject, and several of the publications outlining the wampum belts are out of print. The book covers most of the well-known wampum belts including photographs of reproductions of these belts. Color photographs would have been better, but there is still enough detail to see some of the individual beads.

Less than desirable.......2006-11-10
This book sucked. One of the tricks is actually to teach your dog to run away. It would take about 5 million treats to train your dog using the advice of this book.
Review of Dog Tricks:How to Teach Your Dog to Dance & Dazzle.......2005-09-03
This is a cute little set and would make a fun gift for puppy buyers or anyone with a young dog they wish to train. The book is short and simple and the props are fun. The only thing necessary is motivation. I got it to teach my therapy dogs tricks so they can entertain on their visits. A fun set for sure.
Book Description
This book covers important middle-level topics such as scheduling, related arts, assessment, the adolescent learner, incorporating technology, and more. Researchers outline the major topics, and middle school teachers describe actual successful programs.
Book Description
This book contains explicit material.
What ecstasy! The mischievous, delicious, explicit DOTS are back--and this time they're even naughtier than ever, with full color photographs. No wonder more than 100,000 copies of this very sexy, very adult collection of 30 images have been sold. What treats await you when your pencil makes the dot connection? The untouched page is already tantalizing, but just wait till it's done. The woman in "Dusty Dots" has a feather duster. What is she up to? See what fun goes on in "Party Dots" when the music stops and the guests have gone home. "Lap Dots" is full of adult mischief, while "Variety Dots" presents, well...variety.

If you didn't already guess, this is a connect-the-dots book with the revealed pictures being of guys and girls in rather naughty adult situations (read: having sex). There are 30 puzzles total in the book. Each one has a pun title and caption (adding to the fun). Puzzle #25 contains the least amount of dots (230), while puzzle #8 contains the most (450).
From what I understand, this book (and the others in the Naughty Dots series) was originally released in England many years before it was published in America. I've never seen the original version, but I hope the layout was better than this one. 29 of the puzzles are spread across two pages (puzzle #26 is the only one-page puzzle), which means that you'll be drawings lots of lines across the inner spine of the book. I don't need to tell you how annoying this is. Connect-the-dot puzzles should always be on one page, not two. To add insult to injury, a few puzzles have dots right on the inner spine which are impossible to connect (so you'll just have to draw your lines as close to them as you can).
On the plus side, the puzzles are very detailed and contain a lot of dots. Often you won't know what the image is supposed to be until you've connected almost all of the dots. The puzzles do have partial photos to give you a hint as to what the revealed image will look like. In some puzzles, there are photos of nipples, with you connecting the dots to draw in the b-r-e-a-s-t-s around them. I liked this idea of using photos mixed into the puzzles, but I think that there should have been a section in the back of the book with the complete photographs of the puzzle images.
Before I wrap this up, I should probably take a second to tell you that puzzle #3 contains two #208 dots. The second one is supposed to be #209. So be on the lookout for that.
Overall, the puzzles were fun to do (aside from the two-page annoyance), and I enjoyed this book very much. I already bought another book in the Naughty Dots series - the follow-up "Really Really Naughty Dots".

If you didn't already guess, this is a connect-the-dots book with the revealed pictures being of guys and girls in rather naughty adult situations (read: having sex). There are 30 puzzles total in the book. Each one has a pun title and caption (adding to the fun). Puzzle #8 contains the least amount of dots (113), while puzzle #17 contains the most (307).
From what I understand, this book (and the others in the "Naughty Dots" series) was originally released in England many years before it was published in America. I've never seen the original version, but I hope the layout was better than this one. 24 of the puzzles are spread across two pages (puzzles #1, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 are the only one-page puzzles), which means that you'll be drawings lots of lines across the inner spine of the book. I don't need to tell you how annoying this is. Connect-the-dot puzzles should always be on one page, not two. To add insult to injury, a few puzzles have dots right on the inner spine which are impossible to connect (so you'll just have to draw your lines as close to them as you can). Thankfully this book has less two-page puzzles than the previous book, "Really Naughty Dots," which had 29 out of 30.
The puzzles are less detailed in this book than in "Really Naughty Dots." You can easily tell what most images are going to be just by looking at the placement of the dots. In one puzzle, you didn't even draw in any naughty parts (the partial photo did it for you), you just drew in the clothes and the guy's face. There's a lot of white space, which almost makes this feel like a coloring book.
In "Really Naughty Dots" there are partial photos mixed into the puzzle itself to give you a hint as to what the revealed image will look like. In this book, the photos are more complete, hence why I call them "starter" photos. In a way this is good as the woman are beautiful, but this leaves less of the puzzle to do since most of the image will be made up of a photo and not the dots. There are still some puzzles which have photos of nipples, with you connecting the dots to draw in the b-r-e-a-s-t-s around them. So, thankfully that idea was carried over from the previous book. New to this book is a very liberal use of sex toys in the photos and images. With all of this great photo imagery, there should have been a section in the back of the book with the complete photographs of the puzzle images.
Before I wrap this up, I should probably take a second to tell you that puzzle #12 contains a number 136 but there is no dot for it because it shouldn't be there. Also, the woman's hand in puzzle #18 looks strange. So be on the lookout for that.
Overall, the puzzles were fun to do (aside from the two-page annoyance), and I enjoyed this book very much. This is the second book in the "Naughty Dots" series that I own.

Get the "facts" to back up your gut feeling!.......2007-06-14
Ever have that feeling that someone isn't telling you the truth - the whole truth? After reading this book, you will have the tools to evaluate your hunches.
Nance is an average guy who writes in understandable language. With that said, some topics, like the chapter, "The Eyes Have It," make take a few rereads to really digest the point.
Nance offers many "try-this" techniques. And you can really use them.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is in a situation where s/he feels that deceit is happening.
I'm going back and taking notes.......2007-01-23
I liked this book. It seemed to do exactly what the author said it would which was to tell you what you already know, but in a way that explains the significance. In effect, gives you some 'mental shortcuts' to use. It is more a book about behavior in a conversation and what the significance is. I can see immediate benefit to a person that performs interviews as part of their job. There are no silver bullets to detecting lies, but there are indicators that suggest the probability. It depends on the context. As I was reading it, I realized that I do some of the things he mentions in the book in my conversations, when I recall information, I look away, when I am thinking while I am talking I look away, when I am trying to 'dump' a talkative person I shift my body position, etc.
Mostly personal.......2007-01-11
This book is mostly about personal experiences and tales of a police officer at work.
Works great - use it all the time. Easy .......2006-02-14
The methods taught to you in this book are so easy and so effective.
Here is a true story that inspired me to write this review.
I suspected (knew) that an employee had stolen something from work (value of about $600) and highly suspect he had done this in the past. He was recently told he was being let go for other reasons. (Thats when he went on his little spree). Using the techniques in this book, I was able to have him return all the items and not once did I have to accuse him of taking them or, threaten, or even ask if he took them (that's a no-no).
AMAZING !!! I would have nevr use this technique naturally although when you use it, it sounds natural and after youi practice it becomes natural.
It's not just extreme situations when you use the info in the book, it's much more often. It's not as much about detecting lies/decption, as it is about asking the questions that make it difficult for people to deceive. It's about not putting people in the position to lie, instead of asking for lies, as many of us do naturaly. If people have to work to lie, they generally won't, if we hand them the opportunity to lie, they might.
Deceptive Title.......2005-11-04
Even though some of the stories are interesting, this book is nothing short of average. Had little to do with the title.
