2 out of 5 stars A lot of logos, few text........2005-08-28

Another of those books with a thousand logos, but few text. A bit like the book Los Logos, this is more centered in european design. If you like logos, but don't care about the story behind them, this book is for you. If you prefer books in which the design process is explained, then you'll better look for other book.

Book Description

There are at least two Ralph Laurens.

To the public he's a gentle, modest, yet secure and purposeful man. Inside the walls of Polo Ralph Lauren, though, he's seen by some as a narcissist, an insecure ditherer, and, at times, a rampaging tyrant.

Michael Gross, author of the bestseller Model, lays bare the truths of this fashion emperor's rise, and reveals not only the secrets of his stunning success in marketing our shared fantasies but also a darker side that's hidden behind the chic patrician façade.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars terrific book.......2007-01-29

I have now read all of Michael Gross' books and each has been a pleasure - all I can ask is, "What next?" All the hallmarks of Gross' style are here, incredibly readable, covering a wide range of topics in a comfortable manner and with a sweeping sense of the history of the subject. Gross is equally at home in the technical details of the garment business, the sociocultural aspects of growing up Jewish in the Bronx and the aesthetics of high fashion photography and his tone is never shrill or polemic. I would have liked to have known more about Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein but at 369 pages the book is already weighty, and I absolutely loved every page on Lauren's childhood. I could have used a bit less business writing. But this is my bias. Who knows maybe there is another Gross book about to spring upon us about Hilfiger, whom Lauren repeatedly mispronounced Hilfinger early on, a perfect example of Gross' eye for the exquisite detail. Gross is a master at his trade and this book is a gem.

4 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading.......2004-05-03

I agree with other reviewers who complained that there were not enough pictures and that one could hardly avoid getting confused about all of the different names in Gross's book. It probably is not Gross's fault but to write about Lauren without plentiful photographs is a disservice to any reader. Gotta give it to Gross though. His report is thorough. He deserves 4 stars. His publisher deserves 2 stars.

The book is well worth reading for the education it gives the reader about the clothing business and "designer" labels as well as the telling insights into RL himself. In short, RL has cashed in on the preppy WASP persona but, to this day, doesn't really "get it" himself. Upon being questioned about art in his "WASP" designed house, he cannot identify artists on his wall and brags that he just goes by "feel." Clearly, he doesn't understand that the way of life he imitates includes education and culture, neither of which he has to this very day.

The book is also a wonderful education for the clothes buyer. You know those outlet bargains? I guess they are not, since a whole line goes straight from the factory to the outlet. Did you think that you were the only one who did not buy the $100 blouse at the department store? Looks like no one else buys much either. The money gets made from those pique shirts. Buyer beware.

Another interesting aspect of RL's personality is his "over the top" out of proportion opinion of himself. He actually imagines that JFK, Jr. does not have as famous/interesting of a father as his own son. He hates to party with royalty or even the White House unless he is the star. Can you say Narcissist?

5 out of 5 stars Shame On Who?.......2003-03-01

I wonder if "reader" who wrote the first review below works for Ralph Lauren. I bet so. What a personal attack on someone who has obviously worked hard to write a balanced, thorough and honest book. Which this is. Despite Lauren's flip-flopping, first asking for a biography with integrity, then refusing to cooperate when the writer tried to give him what he wanted--a story told in the hysterically funny and revealing author's note at the beginning of the book--Gross not only illuminates Ralph Lauren's business, but also his complex and fascinating character, his tremendous drive and entrepreneurial spirit and the whole world of fashion. He should be proud--not ashamed. And Lauren should count himself lucky that he got a biography of such a high caliber.

3 out of 5 stars Fairly good review of Lauren's work.......2003-02-26

The book gives a fairly good overview of the major stages of Lauren's life and accomplishments. While the chronology is fairly informative, I feel that it focuses more heavily on the personal relationships in Lauren's life. The book falls short in its description of the creative process that Lauren uses and the source of his inspiration and his ability to reinvent itself. The discussion on the business and financial aspects of Lauren's success is fit more for a magazine article than a serouos biographical study -- don't look for any insights here either.

This book is quite a treasury of entertaining games, clearly and simply explained. Card games, word games, solo or group...they're all there. Everyone's getting this for Xmas from me. A perfect guide to social fun and creativity of play. Chuck the electronic toys and happy times will be yours.

5 out of 5 stars Big Book of Rules.......2005-11-21

Finally a great "rule" book that has it all. User friendly and great layout. Now when the family gets together we will not waste time and energy disagreeing on how a game is to be played, especially when the instructiuons have been misplaced. I am giving a copy to each of my kids and to friends to enjoy with their families.

5 out of 5 stars A new game in town.......2005-11-19

What a great book! My family & friends sat right down and played a round of Charades, then some of the word games. We laughed so hard, our faces hurt from smiling so much. It's wonderful to see the old games we'd forgotten about, and we can't wait to try some new ones. We're definitely taking it on our next car trip and I plan on buying one for every family we know for Christmas. A real find. I heartliy recommend it to anyone who wants to have fun.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Subject.......2005-11-18

The BBO Rules is fabulous! Not only do you get the most comprehensive book on the subject ever, the writing is clear, concise, and fun to read. Bits of historic information and trivia are included as well. This is the perfect gift for at least 3 people on my holiday list.

The book includes a CD ROM compatible with any platform enabling the reader to insert the visuals into his or her own materials, with permission to do so. The book contains a visual on one page and a description of its origin, rationale, use, and space for notes on the facing page. The process visuals are the best from the works of Alan Weiss, one of the stars of the lecture circuit, and the author of "Million Dollar Consulting" and "Money Talks: How to Make A Million As A Speaker."

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding source for any executive to increase their effectiveness.......2006-03-12

Alan Weiss, in his inimitable style, quickly and succintly conveys dozens of important business concepts. Although it was written for consultants, the book is a valuable tool for any manager to improve significantly their communications and overall effectiveness. Overlook the low quality packaging and focus on the pearls inside.

1 out of 5 stars The ugliest book I've ever seen.......2005-06-10

I like Weiss's other books, but this one arrived today in the mail. Firstly its the ugliest book I've ever seen. Secondly, my 6 year old neice could have drawn the diagrams better.

The content itself may be useful, time will tell if I ever use it.

To me it looks over-priced and frankly really ugly. I was hoping for some neater diagrams that were a bit more sophisticated. I think the diagrams are too simplistic.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth $25, much less over $100.......2002-07-20

I had high hopes based on some overinflated reviews I read. However, when this book arrived, it was less than 100 pages of tired looking drawings that wouldn't be acceptable in today's communication documents. Being a consultant myself, I think that I should create a book just like it with some of my visuals and charge hundreds of dollars, because it makes these look like they are from 20 years ago. I'm sorry, but this book is really overpriced and outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Process Visuals - immediate results!.......2002-02-19

Just receive the process visual book and immediately got results!

              1. I received the book and used one to close a sale the same day:

While presenting a proposal I drew the visual as I
explained my approach. The client said
"that's exactly why we need you"

(I measure the percentage return on my investment
              in the thousands)

              2. I will easily be able to use more visuals in my presentations:

I always have used visuals to describe my point of
view, but after reading Dr. Weiss' rationale and
descriptions for each visual in his book,
I better understood how to create and improve
              even more of my own.

This was an unexpected benefit that I immediately began
              profiting from the following week!

Still wondering why I didn't buy it sooner...

5 out of 5 stars The Great Big Book Of Process Visuals.......2000-09-06

I found "The Great Big Book Of Process Visuals" to be an outstanding resource for the following reasons:

First, the overall approach of drawing visuals provides me with another way to explain concepts to people in a pragmatic way during a presentation. Now I ask myself, "What visual representation could I develop that would explain this idea in the fewest words possible?"

Second, I find the approach of using process visuals extremely effective in meeting with prospects. After listening to their description of their organization and the inherent challenges, I will draw a variety of visuals that captures what they are saying and guides them toward practical solutions. This generates tremendous conversation betwee the two of us and enhances the value they perceive that I can bring to them.

Third, Alan Weiss has provided us with fifty examples of process visuals with explanations of how to use them. As I read each one, I ask myself, "What other visuals could I draw that would deliver this same point?" Consequently, each of the fifty could generate three to four more process visuals. As a result, the original fifty can lead to an expanded "vocabulary" very quickly.

Fourth, he has all of the process visuals on a CD Rom. Therefore, anytime I want to I can download one of his visuals and use it in my presentations. This is a tremedous time saver. I particularly like the visual on connecting business goals to organizational education. Finally, I like the simplicity of the drawings because I am "artistically challenged."

Overall, this is a great resource for anyone needing to make a point to a group or an individual. Sometimes, one picture really can replace a thousand words.

Another great book by Jeffery J Fox. This is third book by Mr Fox that I've read. Easy to read and filled with practical ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Great on point info to get you thinking.......2007-05-26

The information that Fox gives in this book and his others is right on point. The job of all great marketers is first to be great thinkers, which only comes from being a great student and working your way to teaching yourself new tricks. This book gives you the little things that you need in a simple way. THe chapters are very short and to the point, they leave you thinking of what he is really saying to the readers. It is a book that will keep you coming back for more.

4 out of 5 stars Common sense basics for beginners.......2006-05-10

Good for newbies to marketing. There won't be much here for those with a lot of experience. Fox does provide lots of good examples about what works and what doesn't work. The book focuses on:

                        1) The main principles of marketing effectively to increase customer appeal and retention;
                        2) Dangers to avoid when you plan your advertising or marketing;
                        3) The importance of dollarizing everything you do in sales and service. This has to do with knowing the value of your product and pricing them based on the real worth of the product. Customers buy the product for the benefits it brings them. You need to dollarize your product based on the benefits it brings, not solely based on production costs. However, if you raise the price of your product, Fox points out that you will have to educate your sales force, your channels and your customers about the benefits of your product.

4 out of 5 stars ACTIVATE YOUR SUPER POWERS.......2006-02-04

There are a lot of books on marketing. If you read enough of them, it becomes clear that most marketing "gurus" believe that their concepts and strategies are the most effective. But what if you were to conduct a study on the techniques used by the top marketing companies and consultants to find out which ones result in the most sales? (Which of course is the end result that marketing is supposed to achieve.) How valuable would that be? Well, that information is contained in this easy-to-read book, which is written in a very condensed, streamlined format that's categorized by topic for quick reference. It's not some in depth, ego-driven book designed to show you how educated the author is. It's designed to help you make smarter marketing decisions as a business owner with the best information from acclaimed and self-proclaimed marketing gurus. You will be able to transform your basic marketing knowledge into super marketing powers that you didn't even know you had once you read this.

4 out of 5 stars good book that funnels down the basics.......2005-12-17

I hadn't read any of Fox's books before I bought this one and was very impressed. Since then I've learned that many of the ideas in the book are in his earlier works but this is such a nice little succinct volume that I found it very useful. Much of the book is what you might think of as common sense but I think we can all be reminded of the basics just about every day. This is a great book that funnels down the philosophy of marketing down to a very readable guide. Working through the book will likely improve any company's marketing plan and help them know their own product better. Good book.
