Where did they get those gorgeous models?.......1997-11-16
Clear, concise protrayl of beautiful and not-so-beautiful fashions of the 20s-40s. The pricing guide is helpful when buying or selling vintage clothing.
Book Description
Over 700 black-and-white illustrations, detailed descriptions, and prices for a vast array of upscale women's clothing and accessories appear among these highlights from rare 1920s B. Altman & Company catalogs. Stylized drawings of flappers depict sophisticated dresses, bathing suits, cloche hats, shoes, and more. A selection of attire for men and children is included.

Ladies and Flappers.......2006-11-05
This is yet another book that has wonderful illustrations and information about 1920s fashion. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in this pivotal decade in fashion.
What the well dressed Flapper was wearing in the 1920s.......2002-12-22
"1920s Fashions from B. Altman & Company" provides over 700 black & white illustrations, detailed descriptions, and prices for clothing for the upper class of the Jazz Age. The focus is primarily on women's clothing and accessories, with everything from sophisticated evening wear to bathing suits, but you will also find a complete array of clothing for men and children as well. Please remember, because they buy directly from the manufacturer, "thus eliminating the no inconsiderable profits of the middleman," B. Altman & Company are able to offer patrons the benefit of the savings. This is a superb record of the styles worn by flappers in the Roaring Twenties; note than this is not simply the reproduction of a catalog from a particular year, but has fashion culled from the B. Altman catalogs of the entire decade. Interesting Footnote: The B. Altman & Company Department Store is now the New York Public Library Science, Industry & Business Library. Dover also has a reprint edition of "Altman's Spring and Summer Fashions Catalog, 1915," which records the fashions worn in the United States in the years before the First World War. This volume will be of interest to the fashion historian and of great use to costume designers working with this period of American History.
A book for 1920's fashion fans!.......2002-07-14
This is a lovely book of a wide variety of catalog drawings and photos from the B. Altman Company which carried higher quality items as compared to the Sears catalog books. There are men's and women's clothes and childrens clothes, hats, undergarments, stockings, shoes...A real treat if you are interested in what the upper middle class might have worn. And everything progresses by the year, so you can see how the fashions developed.
Book Description
French pochoir prints from the glorious Art Deco era present women's fashion designs in their most original era. Chosen from the period 1924 to 1931, this clothing was revolutionary and has been the epitome of haute couture designers ever since. The most famous clothing designers of the time are represented abundantly, including Charles Worth, Jean Patou, Paul Poiret, Lucien Lelong, Joseph Paquin and many others. The hand printed illustrations are each little masterpieces, often admired and collected themselves for their fine details and originality.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing book on Deco Fashion and prints.......2007-06-06
I bought this book in the hope that it would have some good illustrations and information about Art Deco Pochoir fashion prints. However, the book seems to be an English translation of a period French fashion book illustrated with Deco fashion illustrations and period descriptions of what people should be wearing.
If you want to get a "feel" for the fashion descriptions of the period then this book is for you. If you want to know more about the Pochoir printing process, the introduction has a very good description, but the contents of the book itself adds no new information. It's a pretty to look at book, but shows neither the best of the fashions of the period nor provides any real useful information for people interested in either costume or graphic arts.

Product Description
Facing all odds, Marta a young European girl, came to New York to start a business in a Mans World. This was unheard of in the year of 1920. Gangsters were meeting the ferry from Ellis Island, promising naive, young girls a job with excitement, and a glamorous life, only to find themselves in the life of prostitution, better known as White Slavery. The Roaring Twenties- a time of change - fashions, music, dancing, transportation all met with a new challenge for Marta. Prohibition, Womens Suffrage, Bootlegging, and the crash all played a part in Martas new life. With her determination, or sisu, would Marta weather it all to become successful in a strange new world? Had she made the right decision to leave the security of her home and family? (She missed them already.) She would be entering a new world, where she dreamed that the streets were paved with gold. Could she find the man of her dreams - someone who would treat her as an equal? Or was this all fantasy. This was 1920. What destiny was in store for her?

Book Description
Art deco has long been associated with uncompromising style and sophistication, and this guide to recreating the sassy, controversial styles of the '20s and '30s offers a glimpse back at the hairstyles of this era. The instructions needed to replicate these fashions on the modern woman-from the controversial bob of the Roaring Twenties flapper to the luxurious finger waves of Hollywood's early screen stars-are provided, and the techniques behind Marcel and water waves, the simple bob, and Eton and shingle cuts are also included. Hundreds of vintage illustrations, photographs, step-by-step instructions, and diagrams take readers through the history of the hairstyles that laid the groundwork of style for the modern American woman.

Heads up, manly movie lovers! Put down those barbells, snap open a brewsky, and crack the cover of The Manly Movie Guide! You won't be sorry. David Everitt and Harold Schechter point out the best, steer you away from the worst, and watch for the steamiest and most gratuitously gory films in every genre imaginable. You'll find chapters devoted to Westerns, science fiction movies, war pictures, action-adventure flicks, and martial-arts extravaganzas, not to mention foreign films, dramas, and even musicals and romances! The best thing about this book is the bold sense of humor with which the authors champion their cause, rejecting "allegations of sexism and xenophobia as the vicious propaganda of godless feminists and pseudo-intellectual foreigners." In Everitt and Schechter's lights, Moby Dick is "about one man's dream--to turn an awesome white whale into a vat of lamp oil." Dracula is "a take-charge guy and natural leader who commands the respect of everyone he meets, mainly by robbing them of their will and transforming them into soulless vampiric slaves. The chicks really dig him too." And leave it to authors of this book to classify Martin Scorsese's gangster epic GoodFellas as a comedy! Gentlemen, with this book in your shopping cart, you'll never again accidentally rent chick flicks like The River Wild (which has a deceptively manly title) and The Bridges of Madison County (which deceptively stars manly Clint Eastwood). --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
In the search for quality entertainment, a man must be heavily armed against the snobbery and derision of a Leonard Maltin or a Janet Maslin. Here, at last, is a movie reference guide that doesn't look down its nose at action films, but actually celebrates the genre. Based on rock-hard decades of macho wisdom, The Manly Movie Guide is your ticket to movies that shoot first and ask if it makes sense later. Yet this masterful compendium goes way beyond Arnold, Sly, and Bruce. While it does list hundreds of your favorite films and categories, The Manly Movie Guide is far more than just a collection of capsulized reviews. Like the brawniest heroes, this book has wit, sensitivity, and a real brainy heart. Not to mention the guts to use them all with extreme prejudice. Part movie reference, part pop culture guide, part humor and part homage, The Manly Movie Guide is a must for film fans of every gender and testosterone level.
Customer Reviews:
every red-blooded American man needs one.......2004-03-16
This book is
a) an excellent movie reference book which will provide you with half a lifetime's worth of movie viewing suggestions in the various manly genres
b) a hilarious satire of the macho mentality
c) one of the top ten funniest books I've ever read. If I had the money, I'd buy up every copy I could lay my hands on and simply GIVE them away to fellow manly film buffs at my local video store. It's a crime that it's out of print.
Should be an entry in the Harvard Film Studies guide!.......2000-10-16
For those who prefer big, fuzzy-bunny, feel-good movies, or "chick flicks," look elsewhere. This guide represents the epitome of the Real Man genres: westerns, gangster, action/adventure, tough renegade cop, sci-fi, splatter movies, and beyond. Contributors, David Everitt and Harold Schechter, deserve a Pulitzer for this unique collection of "Virile Videos" and "Two-Fisted Cinema" reviews.
As the cover guarantees, there are "NO tears,"NO Smooching," and "NO Weddings!" Best of all, the authors deliver side-slapping, tongue-in-cheek self-satire that one rarely finds in any critical collection.
This volume's "Manly Movie Hall of Fame" (including the likes of Lee Marvin, Ben Johnson -- NO! NOT the poet! --, the Duke -- naturally! --, and Steven Segal)is worth the price alone. Included also are hilarious "comparison charts," explaining the difference between guy movies and chick movies...as if we didn't know, and consistently excellent film criticism laced with comic irony and priceless throwaway lines.
Incidentally, women of good taste, do not be put off by the title! Similar to me, you've hated films, such as *The Piano*, *How To Make an American Quilt*, and *Message In a Bottle*, while our female colleagues have gone unanimously gaga over them. So let me remind you: this book is NOT just for guys; it is for anyone who would rather gargle with broken glass than sit through another insipid Julia Roberts tearjerker.
The Duke would want you to buy it........1999-01-10
The Manly Movie Guide hit me like a fist full o' knuckle-punches. Today's "film experts" and "popular culture commentators" don't know Jacob Pschidtt when it comes to your important manly movies of manliness featuring he-men with abundant manlitude. But Everitt and Schechter know what movies matter most to the I-write-my-name-in-the-snow-standing-up crowd. MMG takes no prisoners. MMG shoots to kill, and kill hard. And like it. MMG dares to talk about the kind of movies today's on the go men of action and derring-do want to sit on a couch and watch. (And, yes, teacup, that is how you spell "derring-do"; you gotta problem with that?) When it comes to talking about "controversial" topics, other movie books shy away and whimper in the corner, crying for their mommies and wetting their puny little pantaloons . They make me wanna puke guts. But MMG takes on all the tough issue and vital movie categories. For example,in MMG you got your sections on: Movies That Celebrate The Wanton Destruction Of Endangered Species, Cops With Big Guns, Two Cops With Big Guns, Prison Movies That Afford Their Heroes The Opportunity To Show They Can Take It Like A Man. And there are pantloads of others. Of course there are also your sundry cross-referencings amongst, betwixt and between your varied topical references which have already been heretofore aforementioned. Now, personally speakin', this here Man-strosity's movies of choice are horror and science fiction. MMG is the only book around which has Who Bear A Surprising Resemblance to Really Hot Babes, and, Horror Films That Celebrate The Vital Contribution Women Have Made to Society As Devil-Worshipping Sluts, Homicidal Hookers, and The Helpless Victims of Insanely Sadistic Psycho-Killers. Plus, MMG is the only book you'll find which gives an erudite and nuanced treatment (long-overdue) of an important movie like Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. Plus after reading MMG I knew sure as shootin' that I could not let another weekend roll by without finding Invasion of the Bee Girls. This is just one of the many valuable lessons this king of the castle learned while reading MMG on the throne. MMG also contains a Night with a Member of the Opposite Sex. This contains suggestions of shall we say, pinkie-finger-pointed-skyward type of movie, with non-stop blabbing about feelings and love and like that) then you propose....... (a red-blooded manly type of movie with copious punching and dying due to profuse bleeding ). For example, she wants a Jodie Foster movie, you propose Taxi Driver. If you're a man, woman or Alien with enough guy-ness to like movies with double shots of ballistic mayhem, bakini-listic babes with bulbous bazookas, and multiple breakings of assorted body parts starring lips, foreheads, and cheeks, then this is the book for you. Go out and buy Manly Movie Guide or I may have to come over to your house and do my Billy Jack "I just go BER-ZERRRRK!!!!!" impression all over your cute lil' manicured lawn, pilgrim. Signed, A Guy-hunkster who can dish it out, take it, and then rewind it on the VCR

The Jungle Awaits..........2004-08-05
The Jungles of Chult is an excellent Forgotten Realms accessory/adventure, as good as Old Empires, Dreams of Red Wizards, Dwarves Deep and Moonsea! It sheds light on the exotic southern land of Chult and its inhabitants. Their distinct culture, history, and civilization will win you over for sure!
Ranging from background history, to city and social descriptions, to important people and characters, to the respective gods and pantheons, to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to new spells and monsters, this accessory has it all and more.
For other FR references/adventures, I STRONGLY recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, Dreams of Red Wizards on Thay, Dwarves Deep, Draconomicon, the Moonsea accessory, the Ruins of Myth Drannor Box Set, and the Ruins of Zhentil Keep Box Set (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it). For updated editions of events in Chult, see the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans. Moreover, The Ring of Winter, being the only novel set in the Jungles of Chult is a "must."
In short, if you like tropical jungles, dinosaurs, exotic goblins, and would like a change of scenery to break the routine, try and get your hands on a copy of The Jungles of Chult. You will not regret it!

Let Go to Grow.......2007-02-08
The author focuses on the difficulty that groups have accepting change. Her premise that letting go of old ways is a requirement for accepting new ways is spot on. I particularly appreciated that practical solutions that were outlined for dealing with recalcitrance of stakeholders. I found the book easy to read with little jargon and the writing style was light.
Some interesting ideas, but too repetitive.......2006-07-16
This book contains certainly some interesting ideas, provides nice examples of business that are transforming and offers some interesting facts (like the fact that employment in Chinese manufacturing is declining more rapidly than in the US!)
However the book (luckily only 200 pages) keeps on repeating itself from the beginning to the end of the book. The authors keep on explaining and repeating the same ideas in almost every chapter. The same examples (UPS, IBM, GE, e-Bay, P&G, Fedex, Amazon, Li & Fung) are used and reused in almost every chapter.
An outstanding book for leaders.......2006-03-10
This business book shows the reader how to look at their business issues and gain an advantage over their competitors by embracing IBM's On Demand strategy. It encapsulates some of IBM's best thinking on how companies can position themselves for growth in today's highly competitive marketplace.
Let Go To Grow, A Timely Handbook.......2006-03-03
My business was at a crossroads and this was very timely. I used it for strategic planning purposes and have actually begun to retool my business with the insights it provided. A definite read for anyone in a commodity business. All my folks thought it was one of the best reads of late.
Great recipe for growth for the 21st century organization.......2006-02-01
Disclaimer: I also work for IBM, where the author works. Nevertheless, this book is a great recipe for any 21st century organization, ... with a clear and powerful message, great examples, and an easy read of short length.
The premise is that the world is moving towards a creative economy. Organizations must innovate and grow, or shrivel and die. The day they stop innovating and creating, they will fall into 'commodity hell', with intense pressure on profit margins. To grow, they need to let go of old ossified modes of thinking and operations. They need to think not linearly, but in multi-dimensional, webby mode. Value chains should be replaced with value webs. The participation in value webs is optional, and is driven by the organization's ability to add value to the other partners in the ecosystem. This creates an options economy, where every company can choose from multiple partners for a specific service. Monolithic business models should replaced with component-based models. Organizations should do what they do best, and nothing else. They should integrate their core business components end-to-end to create a powerful plaform that would help them outsource the other components, and collaborate with other partners in a win-win-win situation.
Sustainable advantage comes from creating a value platform that enables adding/removing components with ease to create value webs. Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Microsoft, Dell, Fedex, UPS, Walmart, IBM, P&G, GE, and many other organizations from around the world are shown as examples of organizations that have created, and are contantly improving upon, their value platforms. These platforms allow the creations of value-webs with a large number of other participants. IBM's own transformation to an OnDemand organization is described in some detail.
The entire book is less than 200 pages long. There are NO frivolous 2x2 theoretical models that oversimplify the situation and add unnecessary layers of complexity of analysis. Instead, there is a powerful, flowing narrative that shows the steps in the process of continuous transformation of the business models of organizations, to allow them to grow rapidly with ease. The chapters are organized around understanding commodity world and its dire consequences; then understanding the component business models, selecting core components and integrating them end-to-end; then creating growth space for themselves; then liberating themselves from fixed cost structures and achieving continuous productivity improvements; and finally a practical case study of component business model implementation using IBM's own transformation.
Letting go is hard to do. Some organizations, and people, will rather die than change. But if they choose to thrive in a constantly changing world, they need to pay attention to their business model, componentize it to develop flexibility, continue to transform themselves through participating in value webs, and continue to invest in and develop their core capabilities.
