Personality development!?.......2002-01-27
At the end of this confusing, and often difficult to read, book the author puts forward the view on the last two pages that the human race should abandon art as something out-dated and work instead on personality development. Personality development? Imagine a world with no movies, no music, no TV, no art of any sort, just people sitting around "developing their personalities" in their heads. Give me a break. Despite Mr. Rank writing this 431 page opus of obscurity, he must not understand much about artists if he thinks they would be satisfied with a substitute of this sort. He misses the kinship artists feel towards their art, and the fact that often artists enjoy performing their art for its own sake, not merely for an interest in immortality. Artists enjoy the feeling of power that comes with creation, and they need the relief and catharsis that comes from creating something beautiful. Personality development could never replace this, since art is a means for the artist to express himself not create himself. In this little flaccid daydream of Mr. Rank's I detect a desire to have psychology replace art, since psy. is concerned with the development of personalities. In retrospect, thinking back over the previous portions of the book, it seems as if Mr. Rank's whole theory of art is constructed in order to make artistic creation seem identical to his theories; to make it seems as if art and psychology functioned by the same mechanisms. This made it easy for him to topple his own house of cards after its meticulous construction with one final blow. ***** I gave this book an extra star only because it had some interesting things to say about ancient civilization and the history of art. However, I am sure there are countless heaps of other books that cover the same subject matter more interestingly. I see no reason anyone should buy this book. It's certainly not what I was looking for. What a waste of money! ***** This book was written in the 1930's I believe. After 70 years I think it's save to say that Mr. Rank's sour obituary can be dismissed. Good art is still being produced and will be produced as long as human beings have the capacity to dream. True, there have been declines in the standards of art, but this doesn't not show a decay in the concept of art itself. Rather, there are two factors responsible for the decline. First, mass media makes the public more accessible to the artist. The culture is flooded with the worthless debris of talent hacks every year. But there are still great works being made. Second, the general trend of the public towards lower and lower taste makes for a bad reception of works of genius, and clears the field for the afore-mentioned debris. **** Beyond this there are many factors that cause different developments in art history. For instance, representational art saw a decline with the invention of photography, and abstract and non-representational art saw a growth in popularity. There have been long periods thought-out history, such as the middle ages, where art standards have dropped severely, but art has always emerged victorious in the end. Art has been with us from the beginning. It will be with us until the end, regardless of how wet blankets like Mr. Rank feel about it.
A Cultural Problem.......2000-05-20
For anyone who is interested in "Beauty and Truth" as a problem requiring intense evaluation, Chapter Eleven of this book starts by considering the conquest of nature "really her successful deception by the human intelligence." The interesting feature is "the pleasure which the individual gets from this sham activity, in that we regard this as a saving of vitality and, indeed, of life." Otto Rank associated this kind of activity with "the realm of freedom ~ even if (again as in play) this liberation can never be wholly successful." As an ideal, art can lead to a way of life which approaches the pathetic in finding pleasures in pushing the envelope which maintains order for the prone thinkers in any society. Rank considered it a component of "head-culture, . . . saturated with the scientific ideology" associated with "the egocentric outlook which produced the competitiveness and quarrelsomeness of the various Greek tribes, cities, and heroes that is evidenced even in the Trojan War stories." My knowledge of the history of American psychiatry clings to the memory of the minor role played by Harry Stack Sullivan in establishing the professional ethics that kept Otto Rank from treating his patients as a psychiatrist because he wasn't a doctor. While some memory of artistic character development clings to people's emotional problems, medical practice in the mental health field makes this book almost irrelevant to modern treatment of these problems, and I only mention it to show what fools we would prefer to be as a society dedicated to the suppression of all uncommercial efforts in the area of art, which remains a highly suspect activity, subject to ritual condemnations by the critics in the press who can't print what the artist is thinking. For people who don't expect to read this book, I would recommend the movie "I Shot Andy Warhol" as a study in character of the wanna-be kind of people which a culture that celebrates art and drama produces.
Rank's masterpiece, the culmination of his cultural analysis.......1998-08-25
Beginning with a monograph in 1907 that first brought him to Freud's attention, Otto Rank became his mentor's closest colleague until 1926. The present work, published in 1932, follows three earlier elaborations of the first monograph, and covers artistic endeavor, language, play, architecture, etc. through the ages as an expression of a striving for individual/communal immortality and a reconciliation with mortality. The creative type lives life, affirming the inevitable, while the neurotic is frozen with life-fear. A fine translation reads well but Ludwig Lewisohn's terrific preface has been replaced here with one by the lighter-weight but better-known Anais Nin. The book rewards study; see an excerpt on the Otto Rank Website.

Many of Kevins illustrious clients are here, such as Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, Brooke Shields, Daisy Fuentes, Kristen Johnston, Peggy Lipton, Ashley Judd, and Halle Berry. There are also chapters on a wide range of coif topics, from understanding the basics of hair, to products and tools, to info on wigs, extensions, and hairpieces, all brimming with practical know-how, professional shortcuts, and a bevy of beautiful faces. All of this, together with a major publicity campaign, ensures that The Mane Thing will be a huge bestseller. Beauty editors love Mancuso for his rapier wit and uncanny ability to predict exactly where fashion and beauty are going. Hes a true original in a world of copycats. American Salon
Customer Reviews:
Great basic information.......2005-12-30
This book covers all the basic information on everything about hair: color, texture, brushes, tools, styling, cleansing and conditioning. One of my favorite parts is when the author addresses hair texture and styling, so you can get control over your hair no matter how curly or straight.
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because a few of the styles are outdated, but overall valuable to an amateur at hair.
Love this book!.......2004-07-23
This is a great book. It is like an owners manual for your hair. It tells you everything about; brushes, combs, tools, hairtype, and the how to for all the styles and cuts. I didn't see anything offending, all I saw was a well written book.
A great book.......2003-04-25
You can't see anything but the heads and sometimes bare shoulders of the girls. There was one small picture of a playboy cover, but that girl was completed covered too. I don't see how that's offensive at all. About the hairstyles, they were mostly practical and sofisticated, just what I was looking for! I have Charles Worthington's complete book of hairstyling and found that most of those hairstyles were wild and no normal person would ever wear their hair that way. That is not the case of this book. I highly recommend it. I would only wish for even more pictures of styles!
I'm Offended.......2002-01-24
I am appalled at the grammar in some of our population. What kind of school did "Marsha from Arizona" attend? Did she graduate? Woman, the word is "offended," not "affended." The word is "whipped,' not "whiped." What a sad commnentary on our school system.
I was affended.......2001-01-17
I was quite affended when I got this book. I whiped it out and started looking at it and was upset to see that most of the models are not wearing clothes. There was a few pages with magazine covers on them, one of which was a playboy magazine cover. If any of these things affend you also I would advise you NOT to get the book. The hairstyles weren't anything I was interested in either. I didn't read very much of the text but it didn't appear to have many directions on how the styles were made.

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST INVESTMENT TIP IS TO BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT!!!.......2002-03-09
I think that "CASH OUT, CASH IN" is simple, yet comprehensive.
Simple in that it is very easy to read, understand and absorb, yet comprehensive with regards to the details, tips and information that it contains.
I have learned a lot from reading this book and the bottom line is this: Diversify your income/investments - I particularly love the breakdown of the investment portfolio that is in this book.
If this is what the Ultra-Rich are doing to either get rich or stay there, then one best read the book carefully...as you might learn something the way that I did.
In closing, I may not have millions, in fact, I don't even have hundreds of thousands, but one day when I do, and I know I will, I am most definitely going to contact you, Mr. Van Mourick, as my desire (with your knowledge) will be for you to help me become part of the Ultra-Rich Club!
Great job! When's your next book coming out?!!!
EXCELLENT!.......2001-12-12
Thank you Mark Van Mourick!
Although the price was a tad more than what I wanted to spend, your book actually proved out to be worth every penny!
Chapter 2 "Before signing the letter of intent" helped me make some very important decisions (I went into an opportunity knowing a lot more than what I knew before reading your book); and
Chapter 10 has taught me some very interesting points about real estate investments, especially, since I'm very close to making some real estate decisions that I truly believe will prove to be in my favor!
What I liked most about this book is that it is very comprehensive as it pertains to the information or content of the book (I haven't found anything close to the information that is in this book), yet simplified enough for me to thoroughly understand.
I'm a better investor because of Cash Out, Cash In!
Thanks again!
Nicole
* Extremely Useful *.......2001-03-15
The information Mark Van Mourick offers in his book helped me immensely. Using his advice I doubled my profits through investments! His book is definately worth every cent of the cost! I very highly recommend this book for those who are in need of assistance for after success as I was.
Cash Out Cash In.......2001-03-06
Outstanding! Mark Van Mourick does it wonderfully. All of his recommendations have helped tremendeously. I encourage anybody selling their buisness to invest the price of a golf shirt for information that could save them millions.
An Over Priced Infomerical.......2000-12-28
While this book offers some good information, most of it can be found elsewhere for a much lower price. It appears the primary goal of the author is to convince the reader that managing one's own estate is far too complex and should be left to an investment advisory firm, preferably his!
The book would be a reasonable value at about one quarter of the outrageous price. Save your money and look else where.

Rock Stars Do Dumbest Things
ASIN: 158063107X |
Book Description
Johnny Depp. Marilyn Monroe. Marlon Brando. Leonardo DiCaprio. Woody Allen. Shanron Stone. What do all of these actors have in common? They're outrageous, receive huge salaries, have enormous agos, and have way too much spare time. Their out-of-control lifestyles prove that, as one Hollywood observer noted, "Hollywood is a trip through a sewer in a glass-bottomed boat."
You'll learn which director was furious when he was misquoted as saying, "Actors are cattle." He clamed he had really said, "Actors should be treated as cattle."
You'll discover that Bruce Wilis ordered the final scenes in Striking Distance to be re-shot at a cost of over $750,000 because the original shots exposed his toupee.
You'll find that Melanie Griffith explained her ignorance of the Nazi holocaust by saying, "I don't know why I didn't know. Maybe I missed school that day...I'm not stupid."
Whether you're a fan of Hugh Grant, Dennis Hopper, or Whoopi Goldberg, you'll learn about all of the embarrassing moments in your favorite star's life. From young actors like Ben Affleck and Cameron Diaz to screen legends like Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, Movie Stars Do the Dumbest Things is proof that actors are more childish and impulsive than you've ever imagined.
Customer Reviews:
Dumbest things (sometimes).......2005-01-26
The flip side of celebrity worship is celebrity mockery. And Margaret Moser obviously has worshipful tendencies in "Movie Stars Do The Dumbest Things." From embarrassing anecdotes to idiotic lines ("My butt fascinates me"), she chronicles quite a few moments that some major stars would love to forget.
Woody Allen's bizarre psychological quirks (and marriage to his stepdaughter). Sean Penn's bad behavior. And Jane Fonda informing the world that the Vietnam War was only because the US wanted Vietnam's "tung and tinsten," which do not technically exist. Sure, everyone does incredibly stupid things, but a celebrity blunder is forever.
And Moser does do a good job of collecting various embarrassing tantrums, hypocrises, demands, sexual indescretions (Peter Lawford's "Acujack") and airheaded remarks (Hugh Grant once said that then-lover Elizabeth Hurley was like his sister, because "incest is quite titillating"). She also devotes a section to young actors , and section devoted to dumb things directors do -- for example, all of Oliver Stone's anecdotes involve drugs.
That isn't to say that it's perfect -- eating disorders and the tragic Judy Garland's suicide attempts are not "dumb things," for example. And Sophia Loren being mobbed when she bought bras really wasn't her fault. While Moser's irreverent tone is what makes the book so funny, the book does need to find the fine line of sensitivity. (That, and what's with the topless pictures?)
However, there are far more entertaining anecdotes than there are duds, and no one is safe from Moser's razor. Classic actors like Jean Harlow, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Elvis Presley are given the same treatment as Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore and Eddie Murphy. And that lack of favoritism makes it even more amusing.
For a few laughs at the expense of the sometimes-inexplicably famous, this is a good (sometimes flawed) light read. Think of it as tabloid tidbits, compressed into one book.
Oh the hilarity.......2005-01-01
Shows how shallow many of these stars are. Mean spirited? Puh-leze. I call it justice! Having one's words and actions exposed publicly is just deserts indeed. But really, there isn't a mean spirit here. It's hilarity all the way through.
Maybe a little too malevolent???.......2002-11-06
I believe in order to really enjoy this one has to possess a cattiness. It is relentless, and at times really harsh. A little too much information. You are left thinking, oh you poor soul, this is now exposed to the world. There are some super moronic things in here and you have to wonder exactly how much of it is true. Some things you already know, such as Sean Penn's violent behavior, some things will come as a surprise, such as Joan Crawford and her "rumored" female affairs and some things are just better left unsaid that leave a bad taste in your mouth, such as the "presents" Bette Midler left under each seat at one of her concerts. One tends to know the less intelligent actors and actresses (Melanie Griffith, Pamela Anderson, etc.) But this deleves a little more into other such things, beside stupidity. Be warned, it is not for the young, it is dirty, lots of sex and drugs and you even have a fully top exposed picture of Sophia Loren that I really could have lived without seeing. There are much better reads out there, after you finish this book you will feel a bit malicious and despiteful for having read it.
Too Harsh and Mean-Spirited to Be Funny.......2002-01-30
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good celebrity bashing as much as the next person, but this book really seemed to cross the line from amusingly snarky to cruel, scathing, and downright mean-spirited. Although many of these listings might be considered embarrassing on a more political level (such as the lavish hotel accomodations enjoyed by the likes of Whoopie Goldberg during highly-publicized appearances at benefits for the starving and homeless), they aren't exactly the sort of thing you sit around chuckling to yourself about in your free time.
At times the gleefully mocking tone of the book seems wildly inappropriate, such as the entry on Judy Garland, which chronicles, in loving detail, the star's decades-long battle with depression and drug addiction (a battle she ultimately lost). The authors remain cheerfully oblivious to the tragic implications of Judy's constant pill-popping and suicide attempts, however, instead maintaining their juvenile finger-pointing approach ("Judy Garland tried to kill herself twenty-three times in ten years--boy, is she ever DUMB!"
Even more absurd is the entry on the infamous sleaze queen Divine, whose whole life REVOLVED around being crazy and disgusting. (Did you know that Divine ate a real dog turd at the end of "Pink Flamingos"? So did everyone else.) In fact many of the "humorous" tidbits in this section were taken directly from John Waters' book "Shock Value," though in their original form they were somehow much more entertaining.
Once again, I want to clarify that many of these books which make fun of celebrities are quite amusing in my opinion, it's just that the people who wrote this one seem to have some attitude problems, or simply lack an understanding of what is truly funny. I'm aware that famous people make mistakes--that fact, in and of itself, does not constitute humor.
Hilarious!.......2000-01-02
This is truly a funny book. If you like gossip and Hollywood insight, then you will love this book. I simply could not put this book down. Just hope your favorite movie star is not in this book, because you will be amazed at the dumb lengths a movie star would go through!

A thoughtful moral work.......1999-04-30
Waters has made an excellent solo album in this(his most recent solo offereing). He has always been a master of the song concept and the concept album, but here he ties together the problems of our ninties world in media scams and self-centredness. He hits the nail on the head with 'Watching T.V.' - remember the death of Princess Diana yearsafter this album's release! Certainly the media turn our attentions to their subjects and away from others which they do not choose. The golden dollar, of course, is the incentive.
The music is less Floyd cliche than Gilmour's modern 'Momentary Lapse/Division Bell' works, as waters gives himself room for experimentation (hence he has just finished an opera!!)
Waters seems to have got over his ego problems and accepted his status as an intriguing wordsmith/songwriter who can still shock and surprise even his faithful fan-base. Continued references to war, however, are getting a little dull -I thought he had dealt with these issues on disc on 'The Final Cut'! However, this is still a great album, and indeed 'one in the eye' for erstwhile band-mates!
This book solves the enigma of the 'ampf cd' - excellent!!.......1999-02-05
Not witstanding the whole 'strong cheese' story, Roger has outdone himself once again with this inspired album and highly anticipated book. not as good as his work on TDB and MLoR, but you can really feel his whole personal reflections and ties come strong through this work. A perfect companion to all the music - one can feel the movement of his personal ties to that certain 'sphinx' ... excellent!
This is the answer to the enigma........1999-02-01
I am David Gilmour. I have been told of the unholy and wicked styles of which some of you live your lives by my bestest friend, supreme teller of all truth and definitely- not- suffering- from- a- messianic- complex contact Sootie. You can tell it's me, David Gilmour, because I type like an English person would. Wot ho! Now I hope you chaps will be jolly good fellows and ignore the rum vibes from the lying satanic puppets such as D*ve Lynch.

This book is pretty good- the games are divided into categories, Team Building Games, Bible Learning Games, and Energy Burning Games. To be honest, I like the Ideas Library (Youth Specialties) books better. The games are organized better, more creative, easier to understand and do, and more categories.

Customer Reviews:
the best resource for youth games.......2006-10-01
I've been looking through many youth ministry game books, including all the Group resources, and honestly, the Ideas (published by Youth Specialties) is better than the Group books. These games are more creative, organized and categorized better, and easier to do and explain. I also like that some of the pages can be photocopied. My junior highers really like the active games. Buy as many of the Ideas books as possible, it's a good investment.
Fun and easy to use!.......2000-03-24
This book is a part of an "Ideas Library" for those who do ministry. The games are perfect tools for getting a group to interact and have a riproarin' great time. Great for leaders of all kinds of groups. The games can be adapted to meet the needs of specific groups.
This book has wonderful fun games for you and your friends........1999-11-10
If you like fun this is the best kind of book you can get. The author of this book really knows what American Girl fans like. It'll have you playing all day. With this book in your hands, you'll never be bored again.

Completely outdated.......2007-09-18
When I bought this book, I didn't realize it was published in 1990, so there is nada regarding the internet. If you have even a modicum of knowledge regarding marketing, it's a complete waste of time. This is for someone with zero or little marketing background. Absolutely elementary information.
You don't need this book!.......2007-06-28

Anyone who wants to be successful should have this.
Others should not.
New to Marketing.......2006-11-11
Super book for anyone new to Marketing. Lot's of practical advice for free of cheap ways to get your business noticed.
This book should get 10 stars.......2005-11-30
When I first started my business 13 years ago I didn't know the first thing about marketing. The book is divided into two parts, 50 things you can do that don't cost anything and 50 things that cost. This book was my bible and there were only 3 things that wouldn't work with my business. My phone began to ring and my friends were impressed with my marketing skills. I didn't feel I had marketing skills. I just knew how to read and follow instructions. I highly recommend this book for anyone getting started or for anyone just wanting to jump start their business and see if there is anything that they could do and maybe aren't.
