The ppi is far to small to enlarge. I had hoped to use the frames for digital scrapbooking, but the images are not suitable for that purpose.
Great book for any art project........2007-03-14
This book was great for any art project. I use the easy to use cd-rom to create borders for invitations, brochures, ads, labels, and so much more. The only complaint I have is there are alot of repeat of the same design, I believe they are meant to be different sizes but I found them unnessesary. Other than that I loved it!
Great images, poorly delivered.......2006-04-05
These are beautiful and very useful images - great for invitations, menus and the like. A wide range of shapes and styles within Art Nouveau - some Charles Rennie Mackintosh-inspired stylised roses, and more French Belle-Epoch style curvilinear designs as well. I WOULD have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the actual files on the CD.
The 'jpegs and gifs ready for web delivery' are tiny - about the same size as in the book, whereas I would have thought using them on the web would have been... well, as a border. Big enough to contain something like text, for example. No such luck - they're only about 150 pixels across. What good is a frame/border that small?
The tifs are much larger, at a printable resolution of 600dpi and about 1500 pixels across - but this is where it stunned me. They've been reduced to 2 colours, black and white. Anyone who's worked with graphics at all knows that to get the appearance of curves and diagonals, you need at least 16 colours of greyscale to 'anti-alias'. Technical definitions aside, what it means is that they appear horribly jagged. Considering that curves are what Art Nouveau is all about, this seems particularly ironic.
Even the eps files have had this same treatment - they're not vectors, they're 2 colour bitmaps. Which means to use them, you need to feather the edges to make them look less jagged, or...
I suggest scanning from the book. I know it defeats the purpose of buying a book that has a CD with it, but they're really beautiful images and worthwhile using. They scan well, as they're on good quality paper and printed only on one side of the paper.
I'm more than a little annoyed that the pitch suggests they're ready-to-use in a variety of formats, when the grave error of reducing all of the formats to 2-colours has rendered them pretty much unusable from CD.
I've just bought about 20 of the Dover book-CD sets, and they're not all like this - I'll slowly work my way through and write a review of each after trying to actually use the files, in the hope that it helps people to decide which ones are the better ones to buy. There are new ones coming out all the time - let's hope that they're not all as shoddily treated as the files on this CD.
Dover, what were you thinking? These designs deserved much better treatment. This is from the Electronic Clip Art series - doesn't anyone actually try using the files after the CD's been made?

This book was well worth the money. It is packed full of beautiful and ornate frames and borders. Most are elegant, but a few are on the whimsical side. Since they are all copywright-free, I plan to use them for newsletters and scrapbooking. All of the images are printed in black ink. To use them, they will definately need to be photocopied or scanned. This is a nice book to be added to your clipart collection.

Hollander Has It Right.......2005-07-04
As someone who has lived with cats since childhood, I can say that Nicole Hollander has truly nailed the personalities of these comical and sometimes exasperating creatures. This book is actually a compilation of two earlier books, so some of the material may be familiar to you, but the book is a bargain and can't help but make anyone who lives with cats laugh. I recommend this book to anyone who loves (or merely lives tolerantly with) these quirky animals.

Nicole Hollander has here written the funniest book I've ever read in my life. Of course, to be fair, I do suppose you have to be something of a cat lover (or at least, live with cats) to understand her wit and humor -- in other words, the concept of two cats holding their owner's 1040 hostage for food might be lost on the uninitiated.
The only thing I will say is that this particular edition contains two books, "Everything Here Is Mine" and "My Cat's Not Fat, He's Just Big Boned". The latter contains much of the same material that was in the former. Still, the price for both is the same as the price for one, so why not?

As the book's warning label states, the result is a highly reactive mix: "Contents are unexpectedly educational and informative, especially in patients who suffer allergic reactions to science, technology, literature, or art. The Ubiquitous Holy Grail.......2003-11-27
As a scientist and technical professional I couldn't put this book down. I have kept up with the the Annals of Improbable Research for many years and this truly reflects some of the best efforts of scientists the world over. In this volume we have works by legitimate Nobel prize winners, and lesser known works such as "Gummy Worm on a Sidewalk" by Kate and Jesse Eppers, ages 12 and 10, respectively. (In their conclusion they noted that: "We came to a conclusion that three out of five people will accidentally step on a gummy worm thrown on a sidewalk." Brilliant.)
Highlights for me include: "The Laser Cheese Raclette", "The Effects of Peanut Butter on the Earth's Rotation," and, of course, "Internet Barbie and the Time Caplet." There are too many to go into, but almost all are delightful. I guess the only minor critique would be of the couple of pages of limericks, which I find a bit trying, particularly when the subject matter is "Mastodon, Mother, and Babe."
Overall a wonderful, humorous look at scientists and science through a very different lens than most are used to.
NO SCIENCE, NO HUMOR.......2001-01-20
I thought I was buying a book about funny things that have happened in the name of science, but that was not the case with this book. It's just a collection of not-so-funny articles that have appeared in the magazine "Annals of Improbable Research". They are not funny, and, you won't learn anything new about the scientific world. So, if you want to have a laugh while reading true stories about scientists, do not buy this book.
Very Funny, Enjoyable Humor.......2000-11-24
As a scientist, I really enjoyed reading about the many funny quirks of scientific experimentation. Perhaps without these eccentricities, there would be no innovation! Great book!! If you enjoy "behind-the-bench" humor, I would like to suggest yet another book filled with hilarious situations and lots of candid, satirical wit on the life of scientists and their managers in high-tech R&D industry, from the point-of-view of the technical staff. This new, insightful American satire is entitled, "Management by Vice" by C.B. Don and is highly recommended as an entertaining, adjunct-read to the incredible "Annals of Improbable Research".
Endless Resources and Possibilities!.......1999-11-30
This book came home with my spouse about a year ago to be placed in my "reading" pile. I never could figure out what he was snickering at until I was looking for an article for math class. What a find! As a student teacher I've used "Aerodynamics of Potato Chips" and "Taxonomy of Barney" for evaluation of scientific study and an introduction to scientific inquiry. Most recently a classmate used "Aerodynamics of Potato Chips" with a group of middle school students who were interested in the distance of the standard toss as defined by the article (much to the horror of the custodial staff). From this initial investigation, the class moved into a more formal study of aerodynamics. This book is science educators dream! Fun and interesting articles that refocus attention, demonstrating that anything can be done scientifically, if one puts their mind to it. Its also an insight into the humor of science as who better to make fun of science than those who do it?

Unfair.......2004-11-03
A very interesting collection of facts. However Lebrecht is entirely unfair and inconsistent in his use of them. He demonizes Arthur Judson entirely in the first part of the book, with evident justification, but by the time he gets to the last quarter of his book he is looking back on Judson's as a golden age. The overwhelming impression is of a uniformly negative point of view regardless of who is being discussed, with any available evidence being marshalled in favour of the current conclusion even if he has already discredited the evidence earlier. A fun read though.
dry prose, fascinating story.......2003-07-19
This book is also known by the title Who Killed Classical Music in the U.S. The prose is dry but the case for the historical demise of classical music as a mass media is well-made. The nutshell is that the music could not survive the compartmentalization of mass-marketing and the greed of the recorded music industry. Lebrecht doesn't hesitate to label good guys and bad guys. The worst bad guy for Lebrecht seems to be Herbert van Karajan, whom he describes as an unrepentant Nazi who, unlike Mengelberg, is welcomed at the end of WW2 and conquers classical recording more thoroughly than Hitler overran Europe. The good guys aren't even all that good, record execs who had shifty business ethics but at least had the idealism to back musical greats like Duke Ellington and Stravinsky. You may disagree strongly with Lebrecht's position or his hit list but there's no doubt he's done his homework.
The book isn't all gloom despite its two titles. Lebrecht ends with some optimism about low-budget and independent labels like Hyperion and Naxos that go for obscure and local music or for affordable prices. Lebrecht definitely thinks classical music is in trouble as a music business but he does offer alternatives to the status quo.

Great book for Paladin PCs........2001-11-30
This book covered almost every detail about being a paladin, even the roleplaying aspect of it. The book even gave recommendations on books to read and movies to see in order to correctly roleplay a paladin. The one thing I think it should have had was more paladin orders for players below 9th level. If I'm correct 9th level was the lowest level someone was elegible to join an Order. An order for 6th level paladins may have been created to get the ball rolling on Order advancement.
Brings the shining heroes of AD&D to the forefront.......2000-06-09
The PHBR (Player's Handbook Reference) series is one of the most highly-regarded, and yet much-maligned, series of supplements ever created. Each sourcebook takes one of the races or classes of the AD&D game, and adds to it huge amounts of new detail - new equipment, spells, kits (sub-classes), lore, new rules, etc. The problem is that the players love these so much that the DM often feels compelled to buy into the rest of the series - an expensive proposition! Fortunately, these works were "reprinted" in the excellent AD&D Core Rules CD-ROM. This one has details on the creation and development of Paladins, with chapters including: Paladin requirements, level advancement, armor, weapons, magic, special powers (including a full description of the Aura of Protection), honor, kits (with such great examples as the Divinate, Inquisitor, Skyrider, and Wyrmslayer), proficiencies, equipment, role-playing, faith and divinities, holy orders, and more! A great book.

I have never been a fan of those poumpous self absorbed Knights, I prefer a character along the lines of a chaotic good alignment, but I do have respect for those that play them, and even more respect for those that play them well, It is an incredibly hard character to play(much like a true druid) and I have only come across 1 player in my ten years of DMing and playing as a character that could pull it off, for those of you out there that are sucessfull with your Palidins, congrats, it means you know how to play pretty well and you have my respects.

This book gives great information on the holiest of warriors, the paladin. It goes into great detail on the role-playing aspects of paladins, as well as explaining their powerful abilities. If you play AD&D, this book is for you.

I have not read a Dotlich book that has disappointed. If you're an executive, or making your living helping executives, you'll lap up the honesty and authenticity of "Leadership Passages". A book with a fresh take on leadership.......2006-09-18
This book focuses on an interesting premise- that leadership is significantly developed by key experiences and the person's reactions to them. Many of the key experiences need to be actively sought out and accepted such as accepting a stretch assignment or living in a different country. Others are often a matter of time such as joining a new company, coping with a bad boss, or facing personal upheaval. Another- dealing with failure- is in between with an element of decision in choosing to take risks and stretch oneself, and an element of time. What links all these experiences together is that they must be dealt with honestly in order to learn from them. The book does a good job of presenting these ideas and more, with examples of people who have gone through the passages- some successful, others not. While few will agree with everything presented, it raises good questions and should be appreciated for that.

A light reader with diagnostics and Rx that is heavily oriented to senior leaders' career peaks and waves but it has great personal advice for aspiring leaders' and mid careerist's leadership tool box. Also, valuable advice for organizational leaders that shape high performance work cultures. If you buy into life long learning philosophy - this book is for you. If you think learning is for the birds. . .I recommend you still get it - it might open your mind to a new and re-focused you.
Something for everyone.......2005-06-27
Transitions are a part of everyone's life. And since the publication of Judith Viorst's "Necessary Losses," transitions has become and increasingly popular subject for authors.
Dotlich, Noel, and Walker in "Leadership Passages" cover thirteen common personal and professional passages (transitions) that they say make or break a leader...in fact, they can make or break any human, not just leaders. The authors based this book on their work as executives within major companies, business advisors and executive development consultants.
Passages are predictable and inevitable. Most will go through more than one. Since passages are intense, they can destroy one's spirit.
