While August Strindberg (1849-1912) is well known to an international audience as a prolific writer, primarily of plays, his work in the visual arts has remained largely unseen. Painter, Photographer, Writer examines the paintings, drawings, and photographs that demonstrate Strindberg's independent and radical approach to art.

Critics have compared Strindberg's paintings to those of Turner, but also to those of artists from much later movements such as Expressionism. In his youth, working as an art critic, he was one of the first in Sweden to show an understanding of Impressionism. In writings of the 1890s he anticipated ideas promoted by Dada and Surrealism. The book includes correspondence between Strindberg and his friend Gauguin, along with new translations of Strindberg's Cloud Images and New Arts. Painter, Photographer, Writer accompanies a major exhibition of Strindberg's visual works to be held at Tate Modern in 2005. AUTHOR BIO: Olle Granath, curator of the exhibition at Tate Modern, is former director of the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and a respected scholar of Strindberg's work.

I have been in this industry for 26 years and used this book when it first came out, and found it again. A classic is a classic. We use this book for our "newartist" trainees. The basics never change, we just build off of them. The techniques used in this book are still used in todays styles, just variations. This book was recommended by our trainers and I am so glad I rediscovered it!

Janet Wasko takes readers on a journey through the history of the business side of Hollywood--who owns what, which companies are in bed with one another and how those hegemonic relationships influence which programs and information make it past these media "gatekeepers" into the mainstream. Be prepared to have your eyebrows raised and your jaw dropped when Wasko reveals the intricate relationships maintained between media outlets (such as Disney and ABC) that play up on their rivalry in public, but are partners on the sidelines. Useful reference for marketing professional services........2005-06-01

Harding has written a concise and useful reference to the different aspects of marketing yourself in the professional services field. I think that even experienced readers will find something that they had not thought of or where they could further focus to build their career.

I particularly found the chapters on cold calling and what to do when you lose a sale to be useful.

If the potential reader is looking for material more specifically focused on professional services sales then I would recommend Solution Selling by Bosworth or SPIN training rather than Rain Making. The chapter on the sale is good enough as an overview, but is not explored in any real depth.

I would recommend Rain Making to anyone who needs to market their services as a professional. I suspect that it would also be a good read for managers who need to build a professional services practices. There are some lessons to be learned here about how professionals need to spend their time.

This is a well written overview of what you should know to become a Rainmaker or deal with one. Unfortunately, it does not really tell you what to do today. It is strong on explaining the theory, which has great value, but short on practical applications. Since there are so few books that discuss this important area, even experts will find this book useful as an overview, but it is hard to use it as a guide book for practical action.

Concise and smoothly written, it delivers essential information without beating around the bush or leaving out anything important. Once it is on your shelf, don't let it gather dust. From strategic advice on which marketing method may work for you to concrete help on presentations, fee-setting and client relationships, this is packed with utility. Many professionals neglect marketing because the time spent at it isn't directly "billable." Of course, that's like a farmer neglecting planting, because it isn't harvesting. The book is thorough, if not particularly innovative, and it does get a bit rah-rah at times, but those are minor quibbles. Our focus is in the futures, commodities, and option business. We trade oil, cattle, gold, currency etc. By being a published author I thought it was enough. Mr. Harding forces you to push the envelope and did a little deeper in order to leverage each one of your talents or skills to move to the next level in client acquisition and more importantly retention. He constantly makes the distinction between "good service" and doing a "good job". They are not synonymous and play an important role in helping you when it comes to rain making.

This book showed me MANY examples of how to guide and direct new business to the company. I was astonished that I was doing somethings right, but the things that I was doing right were being negated by the actions I was doing wrong. This is a great book and was a joy to read. One reading is not enough. This book must be read three to four times with a highlighter and a notepad- so you can write down the numerous ideas that will occur to you as you read the book. Keep handy as a reference. The only thing I wish is that the book had used a slightly larger type face. It is problematic when you want to take notes.
