Bruce Nauman (b. 1941) is arguably the most influential contemporary artist at work today. His pioneering explorations of sculpture, performance, film, video, neon, and sound art have seen him investigating different areas of art years before his peers, providing inspiration for innumerable artistic careers. Exhibiting internationally since the mid-1960s, Nauman has always drawn on a wide range of sources for his work, from philosophy, literature, and music to gestalt therapy. He has collaborated with a wide range of filmmakers, musicians, dancers, and artists, including Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, Meredith Monk, and Merce Cunningham.
Nauman is the fifth artist to take on the cavernous space of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. This book, a record of this unique event, contains extensive illustrations alongside working drawings and texts by the artist, plus an essay by Emma Dexter that documents the installation and provides an overview of Nauman's career to date. AUTHOR BIO: Emma Dexter is a senior curator at Tate. Her previous publications include Luc Tuymans and Cruel and Tender: The Real in the Twentieth Century Photograph.

The other books I have purchased by this author were excellent so I bought this one also and am very happy with my purchase. Renovating our home has been a MAJOR expense and project so we wanted to make sure that we did everything in the most energy efficient and cost effective way. There were countless tips and methods to greatly reduce our utility bills with the renovation work that we learned in this book. We had a house builder do the renovation work we couldn't do ourselves but we still used this book to in a way give advice to the builder to do the renovations so they will cut our electric, heating and air-conditioning bills. Our builder was quite surprised at how much we knew about energy efficient renovations. But we can't take the credit since it was all learned from this book. Highly recommended book if you're want to learn how to greatly reduce your utility bills.
Learn from the experts how to make home repairs, improvement.......2004-08-09
When my wife and I wanted to make a lot of repairs and upgrading to our home we read many books on the subject before starting the work or hiring contractors. This book was a great help since it contains a ton of expert advice, research, and information about the best ways to make repairs and improvements (both minor and major upgrading) in the most cost effective manner. The added bonus of the information in this book is that we learned how to reduce our utility consumption by about half! The topics show you how to make all the updating with energy efficiency in mind at no extra cost to do the work. That we a great bonus to the instructions. Some of the work opn our house were major updates and had to be done by professional builders and contractors. With what we learned from this book my wife and I were able to double check the estimates and work performed by the pro contractors to make sure they did everything the correct and most energy and cost efficient manner. We did detect some aspects of the job that we told the contractors to do differently from what we learned in the book(instead of them cutting corners to increase their own profits). All in all - great book and great choice for any home owner serious about make energy saving home improvements!

WHEN, I FIRST GOT "THE FUEL SAVER" IN THE MAIL I WAS A LITTLE BIT UPSET ABOUT THE SIZE. BUT, AFTER READING THE BOOK I FOUND THAT IT HELPED ME A LOT, WITH JUST 81 PAGES THAT HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION THAT I NEEDED TO GET STARTED ON MY OWN SOLAR SYSTEM. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BOOK ABOUT PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. BUT IF YOU WANT TO REDUCE YOUR ELECTRIC BUILD BY USING SIMPLE METHODS, THIS IS THE BOOK. IT'S EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. THE APPENDIX IS OUTSTANDING FOR FUTURE REFERENCES.

As with all of Jared Brown's biographies, "Alan J. Pakula His Films and His Life" is beautifully written and researched. It's a fascinating book about a fascinating man, rich in details and characters, easy to read. Pakula's life is chronicled, and his movies examined. This alone makes the book memorable, but to have even more fun I suggest you watch the movies as you read about them. Brown goes into the movies' production, the stars and their association with Pakula. Some of the details are particular to a certain movie; to see their fruition in the actual movie is eye-opening. I highly recommend the book.

"Alan J. Pakula" by Jared Brown is among the best film bios I have ever read, for the way it is written and for inviting me into the world of Pakula on a whole new level.
It's not enough to say the book was thoroughly researched, though it was. Clearly, Brown had access that allowed him to explore Paluka's life at a particularly meaningful level. But it is also a highly engaging journey. A really fun read. I realized, as I read it, how iconographic are many scenes from Pakula's best films. Just mention the titles and these scenes pop out, full blown: the face of Meryl Streep's Sophie on that bed, suffused with the overwhelming pain of her past, Jane Fonda's low, droning voice in the most chilling seduction scene I can recall, Robert Redford making phone call after phone call, plodding toward a story that refuses to reveal itself. And how many scenes from "To Kill a Mockingbird" are burned into the brain? I mentioned this to my husband as I was reading and he remarked he had similar recollections of the same films. They are part of our movie-going psyche and had become the standard by which we subconsciously measure many films we have seen since.
Reading about how these scenes came about created a whole new dimension. A new phenomenon are the behind-the-scenes extra material that comes with many DVD's; this book takes you places such films just can't go,: the mental journey of the creator.
Had anyone asked before who made these films, I couldn't have answered. They just "were". Like the technique, the director had kept himself invisible. How gutsy. So this book was a double joy, not only taking me back to some of the best films Hollywood has produced (we have begun renting each of them to see again; they are astoundingly fresh) but providing a chance to meet a director who was not only supremely talented but such a fine person. Getting into his head and heart has been delightful. And seeing his process was magical. After seeing today's film techniques, the hand-held camera with all the distracting jumping about, how refreshing to discover and appreciate the thought and consideration that went into Pakula's films, the respect for the stories, the characters, the actors and above all, the audience, that he demonstrated. Each of the scenes referred to above are remarkable in their stillness but until I read this bio, I had not appreciated how much thought and insight and sheer talent went into creating that stillness. And the love and passion he brought to the films was obviously returned by those with whom he worked. These films told a story in a way we just don't see today. Maybe this biography will give current directors some pause to reconsider how to tell a story. For myself, I already loved his films. Having read this wonderful biography, now I know why and can enjoy them even more.
Among the best sections of the book are the two extensive chapters on the making of "All the President's Men". Brown must live a charmed life; his book has come out the same time as Deep Throat. So if all you are interested in is politics, these chapters alone are worth getting the book. I had just read Vanity Fair's Bernstein article on Deep Throat. Sequeing into these two chapters could not have been more perfect. Or addictive. I didn't want them to end.
This book is a truly absorbing read on a multitude of levels. I highly recommend it.

I think that it is a good book for people who are just getting into real estate investing. It gives you information on many creative things that can be done. I learned alot and plan to use some of the suggestions and tools soon.

The authors of this book touch on many subjects, giving very little detail in any of them. The legal and accounting loopholes are very basic - and they keep referring you to other products and sites they've written/published - making this book one big commercial. In one area, when talking about the benefits of real estate investment, the fail to even mention costs associated with using equity, cash flow, repairs, etc. I am a new entrant to real estate investing, and would not recommend this book to anyone. It is no different than the get rich quick schemes you see on tv/internet.

The concepts in the RichDad series book Rich Dad, Poor Dad are basic concepts. It was a book to introduce the reader that working hard your whole life is not the way to create real wealth. In Real Estate Loopholes, the concepts for investing in real estate are pretty much the same amount of detail as in RDPD. It's a short read intended to give the reader some surface level knowledge of real estate tax advantage and legal issues to avoid by setting up LPs and LLPs. By reading this book, I'm able to ask more intelligent questions for my real estate attorney.
I'd say that it's a worthwhile read, but only if you are starting out in real estate investment and are going to be working with an attorney so you can ask follow up questions in forming your LLP that will be holding the real estate.

I read this book before I read the Amazon reviews. I was shocked at some of the negative comments. My recommendation is to read all of the how-to real estate books you want. When you finally decide you're going to invest, buy this book. It will save you money and headaches. If nothing else it will give you a basic understanding of ownership options and tax benefits (loopholes) that you can then discuss with a lawyer and accountant. Know what you're getting in to before you make your first offer to buy. It is the only real estate book that I am 100% satisfied with. Good luck!
