      5 out of 5 stars A great vintage children's clothing reference book!.......2003-09-14

5 out of 5 stars The Well Dressed Child, A Wonderful Insight Into The Past........2002-12-30

This is an awesome book from cover to cover. I was enchanted with the text and the many fabulous pictures and have read it over and over again. I especially loved the Christening section and drooled over the pictures of the many exquisite gowns. I am thrilled to have this beautiful book to add to my antique book collection. I have found the author Anna MacPhail also has an equally superb web site (www.[...].com) which I have started to visit on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars This is a lovely book........2000-06-23

Anna MacPhail's book is a work of art in itself. Every page is glossy photo paper, and only one page has no photos. Each photo is in color, (even the black and whites are sepia toned), and some of the items are priced, giving collectors an idea of value. This book has very little text, so if visual history is your thing, this book is superb.

5 out of 5 stars A TRIP INTO THE PAST.......1999-12-10

I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. IT WAS EDUCATIONAL AND INTERESTING TO READ. THE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE BEAUTIFUL! IT WAS SUCH A PLEASURE TO SEE A BOOK LIKE THIS. I HAVE SEEN OTHER BOOKS ON VINTAGE CLOTHING BUT THEY ARE DISORGANIZED AND NOT FACTUAL. THIS BOOK TOOK ME BACK TO A TIME I THINK I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO LIVE IN. ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS IN MY COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous, well written history of children's clothing.......1999-10-18

This was an excellent book, both in terms of the writting and the photography. The section on antique christening gowns was particularly exceptional. I learned more concerning children's clothing from this single book than the last dozen antique clothing books I've read. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in antique children's clothing.

          Book Description

It isn't always easy to express the deepest thoughts and share the most meaningful things we feel. Still, we know that it's so important to do -- especially when it comes to telling the special people in our lives how much they mean to us.

It's those people who make all the difference in the world. They're the ones who are steady and secure, always there, forever in our hearts, always a part of our favorite memories and our wishes and dreams. They're the ones who are worth every effort it takes to make our appreciation known. But often it seems like the more important someone is to us, the more difficult it is to find the perfect words... the ones that truly share the happiness and hopes that deserve -- so much -- to be heard.

This book provides a way to not only say those very essential words... but to make them last a lifetime. I WANT YOU TO READ THIS TODAY AND REMEMBER IT FOREVER is a keepsake edition that will continue through the years to be a tribute and a tender reminder of some of the most beautiful and thankful thoughts the heart can ever hold.

Caring so much about someone who touches your life is a truly wonderful thing. Sharing a book like this and letting them know how special they are to you... well, as you're about to find out... that's a really wonderful thing, too.

              Book Description

Joe, George, and Richard Youngblood, three white brothers growing up in the rural South during the Great Depression, live in a world of paradoxes: love and hate; doubt and faith; and sadness and humor.

In his poignant memoir I Must Remember This: A Southern White Boy's Memories of the Great Depression, Jim Crow, and World War II, author George Youngblood shares stories about everything from the brothers' first awareness of death, sex, and race to the truth about Santa Claus. They smoke rabbit tobacco, tremble at ghost and snake stories, watch haircuts for excitement, get baptized, and gawk at locomotives and alligators.

Hard times draw the Youngblood family closer to their father's black farm workers. With one family in particular they form a symbiotic relationship in the hostile world of poverty, disease, and segregation. I Must Remember This is Youngblood's family story as they hope, work, and laugh with little cause-and succeed with basic honesty, respect, and an astounding sense of humor.

              5 out of 5 stars Southern Memories.......2007-03-08

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well written with love and humor. George is an excellent author. My mother's family is from this area of South Carolina and it was just like the stories I grew up hearing. A trip back "home to Carolina" for all of us!

4 out of 5 stars Love And Remembrance.......2006-10-19

George Thomas Youngblood, the author of this memoir, was born in 1929 in rural South Carolina, later become a Ph.D. chemist, and is now writing his "must remember" stories. Stories of a vanishing world--the old South, segregation, the Great Depression, and World War II. The book is not a formal autobiography, but a collection of charming vignettes, covering a forty-four year period from 1932 to 1976.

And they are charming. Stories about snakes and fish and neighbors, about running a rural general store, about the innocence of childhood, about Mama's cooking, about the black neighbors who were as close as family to this white family, about the bonds of family love, about haircuts and ghost stories--well, about almost everything seen through the eyes of a wide-eyed, trusting child and his brothers.

Author Youngblood is a talented writer, with an easy, natural style and a refreshing sense of humor. There is some unevenness among the numerous anecdotes, long and short, that make up this collection, but overall I found them refreshing and engaging. After reading one, I'd reflect, bask in its glow, and turn to the next one. What ties them all together is the bond of love that sustained the family through all their ups and downs. A love that is palpable in the stories. The collection describes a vanishing world that will soon be forgotten. You must remember these things while you can. I recommend this book highly. Book Description

"As I Write This Letter" is one of kind. It is a collection of fan essays and letters, accompanied by fan artwork, and the running commentary of author, Marc A. Catone. All of the thoughts, dreams, and desires contained in its pages were gathered prior to the devastating generational loss of John Lennon.

The letters are from that group of 1st and 2nd generation Beatles fans who still thought it possible that The Beatles would still get back together. Their spirits are high. Their words are untainted by misfortune and grief yet to come.

Written less than 10 years after the break-up of the greatest band in history, the letters and essays explain how The Beatles affected young lives, influenced careers, affected love lives, and guided the Sixties Generation in America into activism and leadership.

Sit back, open the pages, and remember...or discover it all for the first time.

              4 out of 5 stars A Generation Speaks.......2005-08-25

Mr. Catone's collection of letters from Beatle fans is the definitive book for anyone who is curious about the fab four's effect on a generation. Catone does a great job placing the letters into different chapters reflecting on life changes influenced by the Beatles, the pursuit of careers devoted to peace, and positive change. The illustrations by artists (fans) beautifully frame the book. I highly recommend this book for Beatle fans of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars Changing the World.......2003-12-21

They claimed to not want to change the world, but they did nonetheless. Those of us who grew up with the British Invasion were fortunate enough to see and hear our world redefined in this blinding and bewildering moment. Marc Catone shares his skill as a writer and his passion for that time in a way that both connects with and speaks for those who experienced it with him. It makes us wonder what became of the young, impressionable writers whose stories Catone embraces and shares with compassion and insight. Do they still remember where they were when they first heard "Sgt. Pepper"? Did they survive that turbulent era at all? Catone reaches across the generations to reacquaint their younger selves with us, our children and grandchildren in an insightful and pure manner. This book is a job well done; a rich legacy of a defining moment.

4 out of 5 stars It brought the Beatles experience to life for me again........1999-02-18

I had been a Beatles fan for a long time and still listen to their music as much as possible. I always wondered if I might have turned out different if the Beatles didn't come out when they did. After reading AS I WRITE THIS LETTER I have a new appreciation for just how wide spread the Beatles influence was and still is. Most of the letters are from fans who grew up with the Beatles, but I was amazed at the number of " kids " born years after the Beatles broke up. The illustrations from fans go great with the letters. The book is a labor of love by Catone, but not too schmaltzy. I endorse this book for anyone who wants to find what the Beatles meant to us.

This book is full of stupid childish games. No one over the age of ten would ever play these games. You would get your ass kicked if you tried to play any of these games with your friends. I can't stress how stupid they are. Anyone who says this is a good book must not have ever drank a beer in their life or partied with anyone ever.

A college must -- goes well with your collection of Webster's Dictionary and Shakespeare's Orthello. A book that comes in handy at any college gathering. Fun games to engage in whether you are with your fraternity brothers or University Professors. Knowledge is the power!

I am a party consultant by trade with several large accounts, and this book has provided some fantastic new activities. It is difficult to think of new games and concepts when you have been in the business for a while, so it helps to have an outsider's ideas. The psychic and seance activities are unbelievably innovative! We have modified some of the activities to tone them down for corporate accounts, but the concepts are still very strong and easily adaptable. Considering my hourly charges, this book was a bargain.

Forget about bikini contests, banana eating contests and all that silly stuff everyone else has been doing the past 10 years. It's no wonder the club business is suffering - it's been incredibly BORING! "Make Some Noise" finally brings some new and sometimes pretty wild contests and promotions to light. I run a mid-sized bar in the Philadelphia suburbs, and this book has been a big part of helping build some really fun nights. We're about to try "Midget Wrestling", and my advance ticket sales have been better than any band I've had here in years. "Barbie Girl" was a total scream! And the local police got involved with "The Sobriety Olympics", which they thought was a great idea to teach people how too much alcohol can impair your judgment. We've even had people go out to their cars, remove their spare tires for a prize! Most of these ideas are sooo out of the box that they're just perfect for this industry. I can't say enough good things about the insight provided by Make Some Noise. Definitely recommended reading for anyone looking for fun stuff to do. Two thumbs up; three if I had another!

5 out of 5 stars Wild, crazy, FUN!.......2002-11-21

I got tired of bikini contests, but it's really difficult to constantly think of new and fun things to do with people. So I did some homework and --tadah!-- I found this crazy book! In the past 4 months, I have worked non-stop and have enjoyed quite a success, due in part to inspiration and general kooky behavior described in this book! I now own TWO copies of "Make Some Noise", one which I carry with me to all gigs, and one that I leave at the club, and they're both well loved and dog eared. This book has been a source of ideas for mayhem and merriness for me, and I would like to keep on keeping on! I am anxiously awaiting the sequel... HIGHLY recommend this fun book to anyone in the entertainment business, whether you're a DJ, band, bar manager, or party planner. You won't be disappointed!

                          5 out of 5 stars Terrific resource!.......2001-11-30

I picked up this book a few months ago for some party game ideas to use at my DJ events. I have to tell you I've had things spilled on it, the pages are ratty, the cover is now torn, but I make sure I've always got it with me because I've used this book countless times. Some of these contests are hilarious. I've generated many referral sales and picked up a few nights at a local nightclub as a result of the chaos that the things in this book have caused! Make Some Noise is an invaluable resource for DJs and bars. Also recommend How To Be A DJ by same author - even more awesome marketing tips!

                          Book Description

The Way of the Road Warrior offers weary business travelers inspiration, advice, and practical skills for conquering the competition while conducting business on the road.  This business traveler’s handbook is written by Robert L. Jolles—salesman, consultant, professional speaker, and veteran “Road Warrior” who has logged more than twenty years and two million miles in the air.  In The Way of the Road Warrior, he delves into his personal journal and wealth of experience to offer insights on the sometimes difficult balancing act between work, travel, and family.

Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote, “The most beautiful adventures are not those we go to seek.” In these pages, readers will find that a chance conversation with a cab driver can be as valuable as a sit-down with a CEO.  Jolles also speaks to the dangerous and addictive aspects of business travel and doesn’t sugarcoat the toll it takes on those who wait at home. From beginning to end, The Way of the Road Warrior will teach you why business travel isn’t just a way to do your job, but a warrior’s path to insight, wisdom, and so very much more.

5 out of 5 stars Superb reflections on the highs and lows of the business travelers .......2007-04-08

For anyone who travels for a living or takes business trips. This is a fantastic book filled with insight, poignancy, humor and wisdom. Robert Jolles is a self-employed consultant and trainer who has earned his stripes, not to mention frequent flyer miles.

Anyone who has been degraded by what passes as airline "service" (an oxymoron?) these days, will relate. Yet, the book is not a diatribe on airline imbecility. It is a rumination on the highs and lows of business travel and how it can become a dysfunctional addiction that ravages one's soul and family.

The kind of book I was sad to see end - the ultimate compliment a reader can pay!

I read Rob's book cover to cover on a flight from the east coast to the west. There are more pages "dogearred" than I have ever folded before. Rob understands, speaks from the heart and has a genuine, sincere interest in helping people improve their lives. One idea I implemented immediately. I blocked out all three of our children's birthdays on the calendar as non-travel days. This book is a keeper and must-have for anyone who practically lives on the road!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for everyone who travels, and everyone who doesn't.......2006-02-26

This is an extraordinarily personal book. Within the first dozen pages, Author Rob Jolles has shared moments of extreme personal embarrassment with us, gently encouraging us to laugh with him rather than at him. And later on, he shares very personal issues like losing confidence in himself, and going through emotional slumps, as well as showing times when he behaved less than perfectly to other people.

However, although the book is written in the first person (ie 'I') form, it isn't a self-centered ego-trip of a book. Rob's humanity, kindness, and concern for his reader glows through every page. One can't help but feel a tremendous respect for him, and one quickly comes to appreciate Rob's generous sharing of his own problems - something he has done in the hope we can learn from his own challenges and how he confronted and resolved them

In addition to helpful hints about travel and business in general, the book goes well beyond the obvious, giving advice on issues such as how to keep on keeping on even when afflicted by illness, pain, grief or depression, and touches on surprising topics such as the addiction to travel which some people end up experiencing (often without consciously realizing this).

Truly, there's something in this book for all of us, whether we travel or not.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Book!!! A Must Read!!!.......2006-01-10

I've been a road warrior for many years. I work for a sports agency and I spend many nights and weeks away from my family. I have risen very high in my profession and I think I could go higher. I had also forgotten what was important. Robert Jolles helped remind me. The book starts a funny, witty series of tales about lessons learned on the road. It was wonderful up to this point and I was already happy I read it. Then I reached the part about overcoming the addiction to travel. I realized that this book was speaking to people like me. I have since started traveling less and spending more time with my family. Robert Jolles has truly changed my life and I can't thank him enough for writing this. I recommend this to anybody, anywhere who travels. There are so many wonderful lessons in this book. A must read for all of us road warriors!!!

4 out of 5 stars A great read for your next trip!.......2005-10-29

The cover and title of this book grabbed my attention, so I adopted it for my next cross-country flight (one of many as a frequent business traveler). I can honestly say my trip passed quickly and pleasantly, as I couldn't put the book down. Jolles' humor hit home; his life lessons mixed in with business tips were not necessarily ground-breaking, but they were enlightening from his Road Warrior perspective. I found chapters 8 "Finding the Positives," 10 "The Way of Technology," and 4 "Workflow" most helpful. The final two chapters were sobering, made me think hard about the affect my business travel has on my family. There are only 2 criticisms I might submit, minor ones: the first couple chapters come across as a bit 'light weight' so you might give up on finishing the book, which would be a mistake; second, there are few if any positive references to females in his book (save to his wife, some stereotypical flight attendants, an overworked hotel maid, and to a not-so-pleasant ice-queen manager) -- while I am not what would be considered a raging feminist, I would have enjoyed reading some positive entries about businesswomen in Jolles' journal entries. WAY OF THE ROAD WARRIOR is still well worth the read, and it really made me yearn to attend one of his amazing seminars.

This sales director recommends Jolles' latest book for all fellow road warriors and their families.
