    Book Description

In this major new book, renowned art historian Griselda Pollock enters the debate at the very center of the culture wars: Should the traditional canon of the Old Masters be rejected, replaced or reformed? And what difference can a feminist approach to art history make?

Differencing the Canon moves between feminist re-readings of modern masters--Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Manet--and the canonical artists of feminist art history Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt. Avoiding both an unrelenting critique of masculine canons and the unquestioned celebration of women artists, Pollock asks both how women read and what might be different about art made by a woman. She unpacks the representations of culturally resonant female figures in a range of texts, from Manet's depiction of the model Jeanne Duval in his painting Olympia, to Charlotte Bronte's Lucy Snowe, artists representations of Cleopatra and Angela Carter's Black Venus, and argues that it is not enough simply to read as a woman; we must also acknowledge the differences between women shaped by racism and colonialism.

Inspiring and original, Differencing the Canon offers an intervention that attempts to make difference a creative and dynamic process, opening up the possibilities of reading the complexity of visual art.

      Book Description

Brad Pitt was married in one of his suits, John Galliano dressed in one of his jackets to receive a prestigious award, Karl Lagerfeld never wears anything else, and women as dashing and fashionable as Madonna, Catherine Deneuve, and Cecilia Dean go drag to wear his designs. Hedi Slimane, the young designer who left Yves Saint Laurent to reinvent Christian Dior's menswear image, embraces "the cosmopolitanism of the old-school couturier" as well as "the conventional trappings of the modern-day berdesigner." He reconfigures classical pieces via subtle tailoring tricks, discreetly adding such dandified details as black leather carnation buttonholes, tiny emerald-cut diamond pins clipped to a pant fly, and clear sequins dispersed in the folds of pleats. He is the leader of an anti-technological, anti-velcro revolution that is striving to take men's fashions forward to the luxurious, armorial, sophisticated standards of time past. As Slimane himself has said, "For me, tradition is now." Intermission was conceived and built by Slimane himself as an artist's book. Published in collaboration with Pitti Immagine.

5 out of 5 stars Not a book on the quotidian........2005-01-08

This is not to be mistaken for a book on Slimane's collections. It is, rather, a glimpse into what Slimane sees in his own environment. That he can take something as mundane as hotel curtains and Venetian blinds and render them in a seductive and physically palpable manner in a book is a reflection of his talent for design. The glamour of Slimane's collections and his life is captured in the production of the book itself, in the reflective, almost luscious materiality of the mylar pages coupled with the luxurious coloring of the photographs.

It is not for every individual, but perhaps those with the vision to "see."

1 out of 5 stars Avant Garde or Just a Good Way to Blow [money]?.......2002-09-12

Alright, so I just bought this book by my all time idol, Hedi Slimane. Granted I didn't know a whole lot about it, but I love the guy, so I drop the [money] amyway. I just keep telling myself, its by Hedi, its going ot be excellent.

Imagine, then, my chagrin when I find that this is a book of curtains. CURTAINS. Not curtains designed by Mr. Slimane mind you, oh no. Curtains from hotel rooms that Hedi presumably stayed in. Curtains. The book is printed on heavy mylar/laminate, reaks of vinyl, and is bisected by slighlty unnerving pictures of the model on the cover, that is, they are the same picture that is featured on the cover, just reflected on each page as if by a fun house mirror.

And of course there are the curtains. Two Hundred and Eight pages of Just Curtains. Er, wait, there was one full page spread of Venetian Blinds, I stand corrected. Every now and then there's just a blank page, sometimes just a completely reflective one. I dunno, if you think its worth it, go a ahead and buy it.

Personal Opinion, this would have been slighlty more entertaining, and a little less pretentiously preposterous if it were called "Through a Whore's Eyes: Curtains from Hotel Rooms Around the World" At least then there's some intrigue implied, and not, "Hedi needed to get rid of a roll of film on the double." or if it should come with a shirt "Hedi Stayed in fancy hotel rooms with an instamatic and all I got was this 70 Dollar Smelly Coffee Table Accoutrement".

5 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, But Lovely All The Same..........2003-10-07

An exploration of the Indian film industry through photographs was definitely not what I expected when I initially purchased this book, but the beauty and drama of the images, made it worth the cost. This book does NOT contain any relevant information (history, films, etc.) on Bollywood; it's a coffee table book. The photos themselves (of film stars to the mania of the theaters and fans) brilliantly capture the dynamics and glamour of the industry and it's trance-like hold over it's millions (if not billions) of fans!!!

          Book Description

In a networked world, anything can change n an instant, and sometimes everything does....

Transmission, Hari Kunzru's new novel of love and lunacy, immigration and immunity, introduces a daydreaming Indian computer geek whose luxurious fantasies about life in America are shaken when he accepts a California job offer.

Lonely and naïve, Arjun Mehta spends his days as a lowly assistant virus tester and pining away for his free-spirited colleague Christine. Arjun gets laid-off like so many of his Silicon Valley peers. In an act of desperation to keep his job, he releases a mischievous but destructive virus around the globe that has major unintended consequences. As world order unravels, so does Arjun's sanity, in a rollicking cataclysm that reaches Bollywood and, not so coincidentally, the glamorous star of Arjun's favorite Indian movie.

Award-winning novelist Hari Kunzru was hailed as a "modern-day Kipling," for his bestselling debut, The Impressionist. With this exuberant follow-up, Kunzru takes an ultracontemporary turn in a stylish, playful, and wicked exploration of life at the click of a mouse.

          2 out of 5 stars Wasted!.......2007-08-26

This is one of those books one wishes one hadn't started. I couldn't quite put it down for keeps, but I really wanted to. At times the text was so pedantic that I wondered will there be a quiz? Predicable from beginning to ending. Worse boring. Kunzru must have phoned it in from ultima Thule. I rarely keep checking to see how many pages are left to read, but I often did with this one.
This is especially disappointing because his first book, "The Impressionist" was everything this one wasn't: gripping, riveting, engaging, charming and thrilling.
I had to wonder was Kunzru given a two-book contract? Was this the result of a legal agreement with a deadline? There's really no other excuse for failing with such spectacular license.
The ending is a complex and wordy fizzle that seems fabricated by a writer who had no real ending in mind and so borrowed from all the B action movies ever made. Worse, there are multiple plots that seemed to be shuffled together from old outlines.
Kunzru has a new book coming out soon. I'll approach it warily, hoping his original contract wasn't for three books and the new one isn't another boring flop.
          Forewarned is forearmed. Beware.

          2 out of 5 stars Ultimately unrewarding,.......2007-01-06

Having been gripped by Kunzru's debut novel, The Impressionist, I was left disappointed by this follow-up novel. The contrast between the two novels could not be more stark. While the Impressionist was filled with detail, strong characterisation, and what seemed like a lot of background research, Transmission appeared rushed and cliched.

Arjun the central character as an Indian programmer lacks social skills and is a dreamer, Guy Swift is a shallow management consultant with a knack for good spin, while Leela Zahir is an Indian actress with an overbearing mother. No attempt was made to introduce any ambiguity into these characters, and so having any sympathy for them was difficult.

A strong plot could have made up for the lack of empathy towards the characters, but it was incredibly weak. The subject matter seemed more apt to the dot-com period, rather than now. There was no suspense. The fall-out from the Leela virus could have provided much, but simply allowed the characters to realise the ultimate dreams. Simplistic, cliched and unrewarding.

If you've read The Impressionist, don't read this, it will only disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars The whole thing just feels empty..........2006-07-17

I recently relocated from San Diego, CA to Noida, UP (India) - coincidentally both places are locations where portions of the book take place. I started reading it because a friend gave it to me when he came to visit. Apparently he had just read it on the plane or something. I have never read anything else by this author, so I didn't quite know what to expect.

I finished the book in about 2 days of reading, and the only word I really have to describe the experience is "emptiness". Overall the characters are shallow, lacking any real depth. I just don't care about any of them, or their plights. Nor did I find much of the book "funny" as some other reviewers have stated, and a lot of the plot is just plain silly (not to mention the dialogue). I felt like the author was trying to weave together the lives of a bunch of individuals from around the globe just to illustrate some point about the modern world and how technology (or the pitfalls of it) connects us all.

Astonishingly, the book seems to end right in the middle of the plot and finishes everything up hastily in an epilogue-like final chapter called "Noise". I really felt like more happened in this final chapter than happened in the rest of the book - all of it much more interesting! One of the main characters actually gets married, travels the world, and dies in the epilogue, almost as if it where a footnote to the rest of the story.

I wouldn't recommend this book unless it happens to be lying around and you just need to kill some time.

4 out of 5 stars Ramp up your pop culture acumen to appeal to a diversified demographic in a heretofore unimagined emotive blahablaha blah .......2006-07-06

          Ever ramped up? Ramped down?
Diversified the bottom line or tapped into heretofore untapped emotive brand associations?

If you enjoy Ricky Gervais' vacuous dialogue in The Office or even worse have to deal with middle managementglish 9-5 then Transmission will probably have you in stitches or at least a private, dry smile in the boardroom every now and then.

Most of the other reviews have covered the plot pretty well, diversified and homogenised the disparate plot-lines, pulled focus on key criteria for judging the book and fostered an emotive and recognise able outline of the synopsis spanning a well diversified demographic pertinent to the reading public.
What many of them have left out is the pointed commentary on the utter hilarity of some of the things that so many people take so very seriously every day and to me, that is what Transmission is about.

Transmission is an easy read, its very funny and the story does not disappoint as a frame for the punchy one liners that hang from it like designer tags on an overpriced handbag.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'd hoped.......2006-04-06

I really wanted to like this book - I really enjoyed Kunzru's very accomplished debut novel and the idea of exploring the dramatic potential of computer viruses is a very interesting one. Transmission is extremely good in parts but the novel as a whole is unsteady. I think he has succumbed to trying to manage too many locations and characters and consequently the novel as a whole becomes shaky. It's still worth reading, but it just is not quite engaging enough. It's a shame as there are some lovely moments. I agree with the reviewer who comments about the packaging which leads you to expect a more lyrical, misty novel than this which is full of spiky edges. I know it's a cliche, but Transmission does feel a bit of a victim of 2nd novel syndrome. I hope that the publishing industry is kind enough to Kunzru to forgive him this book and give him space to grow, because he has the scope to become a really good novelist indeed. Next time maybe.

4 out of 5 stars Not the typical collection of games.......2003-11-13

The games here are very interesting. They are not the ones normally found in best-game collections. Only one of the 20 verbosely annotated games appears in the Mammoth Book of the World's Best Games (and only 3 of the lightly annotated supplemental games) and none are in Chernev's Twelve Best.

The reason for this is that these games contain subtle, high-level errors. The point is to watch the 2 great defensive players, Lasker and Petrosian, recover from their mistakes.

It is clearly a quality, well-written book, but I think you need to be at least 1700 to get much out of these games, though the annotations are full of verbal description. Defensive moves are just harder to understand than vicious attacks, and much less fun. Still, Crouch has produced another worthy addition to nearly any chess library.

1 out of 5 stars Title is misdescriptive.......2002-11-16

The title is misdescriptive; in fact the book is nothing more than 20 heavily annotated games by Petrosian and Lasker.

5 out of 5 stars Examining an area not often covered in the literature.......2002-04-19

First off, throw out the title. A more apt one would be "A Thorough Examination of 10 of Lasker's and 10 of Petrosian's Games". Yes, the book does contain many tough defensive grinds, the sort not often seen in anthologies. But there are some games (especially in Lasker's case) where the "defense" is in fact "counterattack", and therefore the entire game turns into a tactical donnybrook.

Crouch went over these games with care, and the effort shows. The topic of defending may not be as popular as one of the 60,000 "Attack the King" books out there, which is all the more reason to read this book. Salvaging a draw from a loss is a valuable thing to do in chess; you see many examples of it in this book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Unexpected Thrills.......2001-12-19

Let not the title of this book lead you elsewhere. Spurn not the book thinking it must be dull. So many players beginning to study the game want only to learn about tactics and, unfortunately, only appreciate attacking games. Surprise! You'll find them in this splendid book.

All great defenders are nothing but tacticians in disguise. Here, Colin Crouch presents ten masterpieces of defense by two great world champions, Lasker and Petrosian, champions who differed greatly in their approach to the game. Crouch's deep annotations open our eyes in these twenty games to the tactics involved in what can be so tedious in our own games: holding on to a defensible position. His ability to keep the reader absorbed is the mark of a great teacher. Has there ever been a more exciting game than Lasker-Napier, Cambridge Springs 1904? It's doubtful, and doubtful too is its ever being better annotated than here, thrill after thrill. A pity that so many non-chessplayers think our game is so stodgy!

In addition to the twenty main games, the book contains a group of well-annotated games and partial games all relevant to its primary subject. There's more in How to Defend in Chess than in a dozen other books. If you have any interest in the royal game and are not a rank amateur, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A truly necessary addition to chess liturature........2000-12-25

There are a lot of outstanding books on attack, but very few on defense. The few books on defense have centered on game analysis and calculation focusing on details on how to approach defense. What makes this book unique is its insistance on examining the two greatest defensive geniuses, Emanual Lasker and Tigran Petrosian. As an occasional chess instructor I have to spend an lot of time trying in vain to convince beginners to Class B players to study books like this one. So many tournament games are spoilt by putting pieces on bad squares or worse dropping material. Going through the games and analysis in this book will greatly aid the aspiring player. Now if only I can get my students to actually go through the games and analysis.

                    Book Description

Selling Used Books Online is a comprehensive how-to bible for America's newest and fastest growing group of entrepreneurs, the sellers on Amazon Marketplace and other online venues. Author Stephen Windwalker, a successful online seller himself who has also operated a brick-and-mortar bookshop, provides a treasure trove of up-to-date information with verve, clarity, and wit.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reported that the number of third-party sellers on his company's website grew from over 100,000 in the fourth quarter of 2001 to over 150,000 in the first quarter of 2002, and roughly one-third of these appear to be entrepreneurial sellers who are operating full- or part-time businesses in competition with each other, with Amazon, and with very large Amazon Marketplace sellers such as Powell's, the Strand bookstore, and Alibris. For these 50,000 entrepreneurs, Selling Used Books Online will be a powerful business resource that will help them level the playing field, stay in business, and prosper.

Selling Used Books Online meets the needs of booksellers and business readers who want to stay current on market changes, best sources, insider's tips and tactics, and best practices, and is also a essential addition for public libraries, the small business and entrepreneurship market and related agency and educational markets, and publishing industry and bibliophile readers. Back matter includes several useful appendices that online booksellers will use on a daily basis: a glossary, a list of standard bookseller abbreviations, a casual bibliography of resources on bookselling and collecting, and an online bookseller's "Rolodex."

5 out of 5 stars This book is a "must have" for any new bookseller!.......2007-10-05

This book is a "must have" for anyone learning to sell online. It answers every question a new seller may encounter. I just started selling online and this book has really helped me! I keep it by my computer and reach for it every day! I want to give the best service possible to my customers and what a better place to learn the "best practices" than from a successful bookseller! Thanks to Stephen Windwalker for writing this book!

3 out of 5 stars An Informative but Outdated Book.......2007-10-04

There is a lot of information in this book, particularly if you are new to selling online. That being said, however, there much information that was also missing. In particular, the use of selling aids when scouting for inventory. I would recommend Christine Miller's book for further insight. Her book really did take me up to the next level of my business.

5 out of 5 stars great great book.......2007-09-29

Lot's of useful info packed in here. I little outdate maybe as far as the online selling goes, but the info has so far been right on the money for me!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book but Not Enough to Ensure Success .......2007-07-08

I can't complain about this book, it helped me get started. After running the gambit of get rich quick scams and schemes, I started selling used books on Amazon, and made more than $20,000 my first year. So, if your skeptical about whether or not this is a real business opportunity, don't be. It really works! However, there are some things, like the history of online selling, that some of us don't have time for, and so many of the early books (including this one), don't cover all of the tools available to help sellers find and buy top-dollar books. Because of this, a few years into my success, I ended up writing my own guide, to discuss things I found lacking in other books, sparing no secrets I've learned along the way. Windwalker's book, and others, contain many step-by-step directions, and sample confirmation letters, etc., so all the set-up work is done for you. But, I haven't found a book that includes real life examples, of successful sellers, and their business/buying models. So, I decided to include profiles of different sellers and their techniques and strategies, along with a comprehensive list of real book titles, and keys to help the newcomer learn to identify books that you can buy-low and sell-high. This is one of the biggest keys to success, yet, even after reading some of the best books available, most of us start out with a few paragraphs about identifyng top-dollar books, that are sitting right under our nose at used bookstores, Goodwill, Friends of Library Stoes, and you name it. I'm sorry to ultimately be plugging my own book, when this book helped me get started and is a first rate book, but I did my best to make sure my books was the most inclusive and the information tangible, gearing it to the stay-at-home mm, because it's developed to make the most money in the least amount of time (which are two things mom's are short of), but this quality ultimately makes it perfect for anyone wanting to make the money it takes to sustain yourself and your family with a home-based, low-risk, low-overhead, low-investment, high-profit business.

Christine Miller author of How to Sell Used Books on Amazon: The Stay-at-Home Mom's Secret Step-by-Step Guide (from setting up your account, to navigating the website, contacting customers, finding, recognizing, and selling top-dollar books, and much more)

This book gave me clear ideas on how to set up a book selling business. There were also many helpful tips on how to improve a business that is already going. I would buy it again.
