My kindergartner loves this book!.......2000-03-27
Venezia does a great job of making Hopper's biography interesting to kids, and his work accessible and exciting to them. Examples of his paintings are presented throughout the story, and readers learn what influenced the works at different periods of his life. The author's own cartoons, interpreting events in the story, are very funny. Both big and small kids love them. One of the very best children's books about art we have ever read. Venezia's entire series is wonderful.

Very excellent work.......2001-01-16
I own a lot of Dover art series books. They are excellent books for beginning artists in that they show how the old masters did their early works using different media. Much can be learned from the Dover art books in the use of subject, form, and shading. The Hopper Drawings is one of my favorite Dover art books. Most of the drawings in this book have been made using the Conte crayon. I prefer the Conte crayon over charcoal. It is very sleek, clean, and smooth. The drawings show how masterful Hopper is with the Conte crayon and much can learned by studying his drawings.

What lovely fashions!.......2006-11-09
I was born in early 1953 so the late 50's are when I started to become aware of things feminine. I seem to be drawn to this book probably more often than I do with the other books in this series. No, I'm not getting any younger (or slimmer) but a girl can dream. Anyway, this is the typical Schiffer treatment with lots of well chosen designs well reproduced in color. The only thing I could criticize are Ms. Shih's personal asides within the text which, of course, are her opinions and not mine. It's a minor thing, really.
Schiffer's Late 50's Review.......2000-01-04
Joy Shih and Schiffer Publications have done it again. Fashionable Clothing from the Sears Catalogs: Late 1950's is an excellent Primary resource for Costume and Fashion Designers. I find that the layout and the organization of this book much better than Schiffer's "early 1950's". Unfortunately it only focuses on Sears Catolgues' perspective of this era, which is only middle America, blue collar, suburbia. I give this book for stars for its' use of primary resource, clear division of clothing types, reproduction of true fifties color, and actual cost of garments today and yesterday

Another excellent edition of the DC Comics' Factoid Press "Big Book" series. This one focuses on a variety of criminals, from small-time hoods to organized crime. Not terribly morbid, but interesting all the same.
Masterminds and simpletons of the underworld.......2004-08-09
In this new installment of the "Big Book of..." series the level of artistry and research stays high as it had in all other pieces so far.
I own most of the installments that have hit the market over the past few years and simoultaneously I'm an avid comic-fan. That being as it is I can safely say that this happens to be one of the very best comics publications I've ever seen.
Particularly to this book, it's a history of some of the most notorious underworld figures in the United States. Except for the masterheads of crime it also includes some characters which became famous rather for their lack of intelligence. In the 63 stories included are also figures which were well known in their time and faded into history afterwards but whose story is extremely interesting nevertheless.
Impeccably researched (as usual) and with that subtle sarcasm or cynicism that this series is well known for, this is an absolutely must-have item.
It's been often after I've read issues of the Big Book series that i went on to further reads because of what i discovered in these books. That i think, is a huge compliment in itself. If you're not acquainted with this series start over here with the "....Little Criminals" part. A pure gem.

Little Criminals Big Crimes.......2000-03-24
All these Big Books are simply marvelous. The contributing artists number in the fifties so the artwork never becomes boring. Factoid books has done a remarkable job of fusing top rate artwork with extemely accurate short tales or biographies. For anyone interested in the less successful side of crime or for more obscure matters like the midget member of the Gallo gang this book is a goldmine......the whole series is fantastic popcorn for the mind....hard to put down till you are finished.....read one and rush right out and buy another....I have all fifteen and reread them often

In the heat of the 2004 presidential election campaign, no single work of speechmaking, writing, or media production fueled the fiery debate over George W. Bush's leadership as much as Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Certainly, no American documentary film ever provoked as much political controversy.
A noted film scholar now offers a much-needed appraisal of both the film and the furor surrounding it. Robert Brent Toplin first examines the development of Moore's ideas and the evolution of his filmmaking, then dissects Fahrenheit 9/11 and explores the many claims and disagreements about the movie's truthfulness. Toplin considers the ways in which Moore based his arguments on a diverse array of "primary sources," many of which had received scant attention in the mainstream media-including the notorious seven-minute "Pet Goat" video depicting President Bush-either deliberately calm or paralyzed-in a Florida classroom on being told of the 9/11 attacks. Finally, Toplin considers the movie's impact, noting that some enthusiasts of the film thought it would help Democrats in the 2004 elections while others argued that Moore's strident approach to issues would turn off swing voters and contribute to a Republican victory.
Critics lambasted Fahrenheit 9/11, claiming Moore violated standards of documentary filmmaking through his excessive partisanship. They also berated him for taking events out of context and getting the facts wrong. Toplin contends that partisanship is a well-established tradition in documentary filmmaking, and he shows that the major disagreements between admirers and detractors of Fahrenheit 9/11 revolved around interpretation rather than the factual record. Michael Moore took some controversial risks, Toplin demonstrates, but on many large and small matters-from his treatment of the Bush administration's reactions to 9/11 and war-making in Iraq to disputes about the Saudi flights from the United States after 9/11-Moore raised many legitimate questions.
Toplin's engaging study shows that Michael Moore's film did more than shake up a nation; it also made an indelible contribution to the esteemed tradition of agenda-driven cinema.

What a pleasure it was for me to read a quality financial book written by a nationally recognized financial authority like Terry Savage. Excellent book and not just for women either.
Disregard those reviews by tax people, brokers etc........2003-10-02
I have Terry's book but also enjoy listening to quality material in my car so bought the cd as well. This is a very complete, financial education program. SHE COVERS EVERYTHING. And I found the tax information very beneficial as well.
I noticed one of the negative reviewers claiming to be a tax attorney. How can we expect this person to give a fair and credible review of this book and tape program. He is afraid of losing business!
Don't expect brokers to be anymore sympathetic either. They would rather have you buy their "Soup D'Jour" which pays them the highest commissions irregardless of whether you make money or not.
The JBQ crusaders; all I can say is compare the background and credentials of Ms. Savage and JBQ. NO CONTEST!

A fresh, new perspecive.......2003-09-22
Have you noticed how so many of the other financial books out there all say more or less the same thing? I bought "The Savage Truth on Money" CD and was so impressed that I went back and bought the book also.Ms. Savage has a vast background on personal finance and offers a fresh and unique approach that is backed with fact.She is a pleasure to listen to as well. Playing her CD is like having Ms. Savage in your car or office talking directly to you.Great program but only for those who are open minded.
Not just for women.......2003-09-21
I bought this book by Terry Savage along with Don't Mess with My Money by the Dolans after returning Making the Most of Your Money by Quinn.
I have to admit I felt a little strange buying this book which at first appeared to be for women, but after inspection, found this book to be outstanding and a great financial book for everyone.
Ms Savage covers everything you need to know about money from mutual funds, "chicken money", insurance and going on into retirement. Her style makes this an easy read and she is witty too.
By contrast, I bought Making the Most of Your Money by Quinn and was wholly dissappointed--returned it after one day.
Terry Savage has written an excellent book for anyone interested in truly Making the Most of their Money. In Savage's case, it is not a fancy line, but reality.
Great book Terry. I am looking forward to your next foray!
Excellent author review and book.......2003-09-20
I enjoyed this book by Terry Savage. My wife bought this book along with The Road to Wealth and The Laws of Money by Suze Orman.
In many ways, Savage pushes Orman on financial advice and savvy and is a witty writer as well. Both have credentials to write financial books, unlike other authors.
I also felt that Ms. Savage showed class in her review, thanking her fans and clearing the air o n the Microsoft issue. And at least she (Savage) writes reviews using her own name, not an alias as some other authors do.
Overall good good written by a person of quality.
