          Book Description

Not long ago, the South Bronx and other devastated New York City neighborhoods had become legendary as the worst urban war zones, so infamous that busloads of foreign tourists would ask to be taken there to snap pictures of the rubble. What's more, the city's treasury was empty, and the federal government under Ronald Reagan was pulling back from its commitment to confront the nation's "urban crisis." In New Life at Ground Zero, Charles J. Orlebeke traces New York City's dramatic comeback in the '80s and '90s, focusing on one organization, the New York City Housing Partnership, which helped spark the recovery by building thousands of new homes for the ownership market in the South Bronx and throughout the city. As Orlebeke vividly recounts, this high stakes gamble was pulled off by a diverse cast of characters—sometimes working cooperatively, more often at odds in the nation's most complex and contentious political environment. Behind the facade of "public-private partnership" presented by retired banker and civic leader David Rockefeller and popular mayor Ed Koch in 1982, lay minefields of conflicting interests, bureaucratic roadblocks, and clashing personalities.

New Life at Ground Zero sets the stage for the emergence of the Housing Partnership with account of colliding views about how New York City should develop after World War II, whether as a gleaming "city of the future," or as the messier, human-scale city of neighborhoods envisioned by Jane Jacobs. Both views seemed irrelevant in the mid-'70s, as New York City plunged into near bankruptcy. From this civic ordeal would emerge the Housing Partnership, a business-led nonprofit developer that would combine large-scale rebuilding with relatively low-density neighborhoods of resident owners.

In telling the Housing Partnership story, Orlebeke draws on a careful analysis of internal documents and communications and on interviews with key partners, including city officials, Partnership staff, community activists, business leaders, homebuilders, and buyers. Still flourishing today, the Partnership has branched out into rebuilding abandoned rental buildings with neighborhood entrepreneurs, and is also sponsoring the development of new retail stores in places once written off as hopeless. As such, it stands out as a useful model of community revival for other cities to study and adapt to their own local circumstances.

Reflecting on the Housing Partnership achievement, the author taps into his experience as a public official and a student of urban policy and argues persuasively that this story is an early example of an increasingly potent, national community development movement that challenges the conventional pessimistic view of the urban prospect.

          2 out of 5 stars Ultimate? Naww.......2007-08-10

I'm a huge Bond fan. After reading this book, I found nothing that I was looking for. All that is in the book is charts and rankings. There is not even a fact page...like...Best selling book film or what not.
I think they should take off the "Ultimate" in "Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" and just put "Just another James Bond Fan Book."

4 out of 5 stars A different take on familiar material.......2007-02-26

Unlike other books about the Bond films, this one does not just review what the movies are about, but compares, contrasts, and critiques them over the last 40+ years. Perhaps a better title would have been "The Ultimate James Bond MOVIE Fan Book." There is minimal discussion of the literary 007 here. I enjoyed the ranking system, although some of the time I don't agree with the author's opinions, which Lipp admits may occur straightaway. Nonetheless, it's entertaining reading taking the movies from a different perspective. My only significant complaint is the complete lack of photographs, but these can be found elsewhere. For example, if you can't remember Stromberg (Curt Jergens) from The Spy Who Loved Me, you aren't going to see a picture of him in this tome. With the recent release of the Ultimate Editions on DVD, this is a timely and handy companion.

3 out of 5 stars For what it is supposed to be it is very good........2006-12-10

The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book is interesting, though not "ultimate" for people who have been reading books about Bond for years. I have a collection of books on both the James Bond films and the novels and this has perhaps prejudiced my view. If you love a repeat of plots, an analysis and critique of all the Bond characters in film and enjoy statistics this may be the book for you. There is certainly an ample supply of lists and enough ratings to fill a graduate textbook on statistics. Having experienced the latter I feel I can say that.

Where the book suffers, and author Deborah Lipp is very upfront on this, is the personal opinions. She is very honest about this and actually has two ratings for every aspect of each film. Ms. Lipp relies heavily upon fan websites and suveys that either she or others have made. Then she expresses her own feelings, sometimes in agreement and sometimes the opposite. She is very candid that Bond fans, like Trekkies and Sherlockians (I am in all three categories) will disagree on a number of points. My biggest problem is that once she gets into a film she goes off into lists and ratings of which there are many. I would have preferred the listings to have been at the latter part of the book. At times there is no apparent reason why a list will pop up at the end of a particular film being described.

I will also confess that I did not take the author's suggestion to refer to certain sections as I felt moved rather than reading it straight from cover to cover. By the end I felt very bogged down and wished that I had only read it in parts, with an interlude between. There are many excellent books of analysis out there on the Bond films, encyclopedias in some cases, many with great pictures from the films. I would suggest the reader of this review check out the listing on Amazon. If you enjoy this book you will likely find others that you will like even better. I have had to do this for years as I have used the Bond films in the classroom and written articles about some of them.

I don't regret that I bought this. I have had the good fortune as a teacher to have met a number of the main stars Ms. Lipp has named, three of which have become close personal friends of my wife and myself and who I will be asking to autograph this book as they have others in my collection.

I do appreciate the very strong feelings the author has about various Bond films, we all do. I did not rate this book on whether I agreed with the author on every film, but on its usefulness to a long time fan.

5 out of 5 stars The title is not just hype: this really IS the ultimate.......2006-11-10

The title is not just hype. This really is the ultimate book on James Bond movies; I can't imagine anything more authoritative or more entertaining. Whether you use it as a reference book, browse through it, or read it from cover to cover (as I did), it will reward you with a wealth of facts and informed opinion. This book is a great addition to anyone's movie bookshelf, and it's an absolute gotta-have for fans of James Bond - casual fans and super fans alike.

Deborah Lipp's strategy in organizing her material works extremely well. Each Bond movie gets its own chapter, which is divided into sections devoted to synopsis, analysis, and evaluation of the movie's strength and weaknesses, as well as a ranking of where the movie stands in the Bond canon. Interspersed with these discussions, you get irresistible nuggets of information: quotes, polls, rankings, milestones, facts & figures, high points & low points, cars & gadgets, goofs, awards, and more. I especially enjoyed the many Bond lists that Lipp compiled for the book, such as "Best Explosions in Bond Films," "Best Stunts," "Best Car Chases," and "Best Villains." Another highlight is an extensive survey of the actors who have portrayed Bond on screen, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of their performances.

Lipp's love of movies shines through every page. Her writing style is witty and literate, and her knowledge of 007 lore will blow you away. "The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book" is sure to become the standard work on 007 movies. Every Bond fan and every movie lover should put this book in their shopping carts.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Above Other Bond Movie Books.......2006-10-06

While there will be several James Bond books available around the time of the new Bond movie (Casino Royale) release, I recommend you get this one.

This book is very easy to read (even for people who only like photo books), and is extremely well-researched. The author very cleverly mixes in "Top Ten" and "Best/Worst" lists within each chapter describing a particular Bond movie in detail.

The author makes clear her prejudices and preferences for various films, characters, moments, etc., but balances this to a large degree with citings, quotations, and comments from fan pollings. A sore spot with other Bond books (avoided here) was the feeling their authors were trying to get in good with EON Productions (Owners/Producers of the Bond movie franchise) or other Bond movie P.R. people.

Of course, I don't agree with every opinion in this book (come on, "on Her Majesty's Secret Service" ranked in the LOWER third of Bond movies?); when presented in an entertaining manner (like in this book), these opinions are great for movie buff/Bond fan dispute, discussion, and debate --- what a good read is supposed to accomplish.

          Five stars.

            Book Description

Cinema history might have been very different had the first James Bond film not been Dr. No in 1962 starring Sean Connery, but Thunderball directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1959 and starring Richard Burton as agent 007. It sounds preposterous and unbelievable, but it almost happened. The Battle for Bond unravels the untold story behind the most controversial part of the James Bond legend using previously unpublished material including letters and private documents. It is a tale of bitter recriminations, betrayal, multi-million dollar lawsuits and even death. It starts way back in 1959 when colorful Irish film producer Kevin McClory collaborated with Ian Fleming and Hollywood screenwriter Jack Whittingham on a screenplay for what was intended to be the first ever James Bond film, entitled Thunderball. When the project collapsed, Fleming instead used its plot as the basis for his next Bond novel, but without permission. An incensed McClory and Whittingham sued. The resulting trial was one of the most high profile and complex of the 1960s. Essentially the creator of the 20th century's greatest fictional character was in the dock, accused of plagiarism. Already gravely ill, many of Fleming's friends feared the pressure of the trial would have a detrimental effect on his health. Tragically they were proved right when only a few months later Fleming died of a massive heart attack aged only 56. As for Kevin McClory, he became a millionaire over night, winning the film rights to Thunderball. He was now in the enviable position of being able to make his own 007 movie. But the already established Sean Connery series was a hard act to compete with and McClory instead decided to join forces with Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in a one-off deal to co-produce Thunderball. Released in time for Christmas 1965, Thunderball was the Star Wars of its day, becoming one of the most successful films in movie history. In preparing the book the author was granted exclusive access to a wealth of previously unpublished material including hundreds of letters from the principal characters in the Thunderball story, including Fleming himself, business and private documents and never before seen papers from the 1963 court case. And also the five different screenplays that were written for Thunderball - two from Fleming and three from Jack Whittingham. The author also interviewed many of the actors and production people who worked on Thunderball and Never Say Never Again. Their memories and colourful anecdotes bring to life two of the most successful and universally popular Bond movies of all time.

            Book Description

A breakthrough book in the emergent fields of improvisation and cultural theory, The Other Side of Nowhere conveys the spirit and energy of an experimental celebration. The volume is divided into four sections: writings of musicians about improvising; examinations of inter- and cross-cultural dialogue; discussions of social practice and identity; and essays about collaborative dissonance. The 17 essays present jazz improvisation as a cultural practice with far-reaching ramifications. Music is treated not merely as an artistic phenomenon, but as a social force with the power to effect substantial change among people of marginalized races, genders, sexualities and ethnicities. The collection argues that there is a distinctive relationship between the emergence of free jazz, the desire for social justice and activist practices. The Other Side of Nowhere is a groundbreaking book that offers multiple perspectives on the art of jazz improvisation--it will inspire readers to create, collaborate and dissent.

            3 out of 5 stars Requires a little patience.......2005-04-23

Nowadays a lot of books on jazz/improv are like this one, pitched at an academic audience in the cultural-studies area rather than engaging in serious musicology. There are musicians among contributors but the amount of actual discussion of music (rather than of cultural symbolism of the act of improvisation) is pretty thin, & indeed (except for a few bars' transcription of a Steve Coleman piece at one point) there's no music printed in the book at all. Some of the pieces are too windy to be of much use (above all, the editors' incredibly long & repetitive preface), & some are just rather tangential (a piece on Marlon Brando as "jazz actor"), but if you're a patient sort you can winkle out some useful material. Trombonist George Lewis writes ponderously, but his piece (a reprint of his earlier essay "Improvised Music after 1950" plus a brief coda to bring it up to date) contains a well-aimed polemic concerning the way that "new music" borrows from jazz while at the same time denigrating it subtly or bluntly (John Cage's inane comments on jazz come in for careful dissection). Pauline Oliveros' autobiographical piece "Harmonic Anatomy: Women in Improvisation" is also strong; & there's an excellent collage of interviews with jazz producers (Macero, Avakian, Weinstock, Keepnews, &c) by Michael Jarrett. & there are various other good things (John Corbett's final piece is worthwhile, though Nathaniel Mackey's contribution is somewhat disappointing: a useful introduction but then the rest of it is reprinted extracts from his fiction).

The basic thesis of the book (which runs through essays by different authors) is that improvised music's importance is in its "community building"--as a form of utopianism in action. My feelings about this idea are mixed: on the one hand the community around jazz (of fans, musicians, critics, presenters, &c) is indeed one of its appeals; on the other often this tempts jazz/improv fans to excesses of pride & denigration of other forms of music (witness the silly comments of people like Eddie Prevost about the "authoritarian", "hierarchical" nature of pop music or classical music). & the emphasis on community building in the book can sometimes seem to get things backwards: as if the importance of the music weren't the music at all but the forms of community it gives rise to. As the thinness of musicological description (or even more nontechnical description) in the book suggests, this can mean a curious bypassing of the actual music that led people to join the jazz/improv community in the first place.

Not really an essential purchase unless you're doing academic work in the field.

              1 out of 5 stars Badly flawed.......2007-07-31

Sudoku puzzles are supposed to have only one unique solution. In the most difficult section of 9 x 9 puzzles (the "brown belt" chapter), 8 of the 20 puzzles have multiple solutions (91,97,100,102,103,104,108,109). I spot checked other sections, and found that problems are there as well. Level of difficulty for "toughest" section is also only at lower-intermediate. Authors should check their puzzle-generation software before publishing!

              3 out of 5 stars Flawed.......2006-07-24

For the most part, this book is a really great way to get started in Sudoku and learn the ropes. However, at the beginning of the Blue Belt section, it says that solutions are not up for debate...that there is only one solution for each puzzle. On puzzle 91, I found that some of the numbers were, in fact, interchangable and still logical and valid solutions. For a book from the praised Sudoku Institute in Japan, I would expect more.

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but mostly useful.......2006-01-22

I like some of what Larry has to say, but I find much has changed since the book was first written. Some of the principles don't change, like developing a budget, but many things are difficult to work in a modern age. Most young couples are problably fall into the 'Dual Incomes No Kids' category. You generally don't go to the grocery store with your grocery envelope, or take the family check book and write them a check.

My favorite quote from the book is 'Arthur Andersen and Company could not have balanced that checkbook'. In light of events at Enron, it seems they probably could have 'balanced' the checkbook.

He makes many broad generalizations which may offend either the husband or the wife. For example: 'I find with most couples I counsel that the wife, given training, is usually the better bookkeeper. Normally she has more time and is a little more diligent.'

The book has many stories of finances gone bad, which should at least make you feel that your finances are in a lot better shape than some peoples.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Every Couple.......2005-12-17

If you are not one to be led by Biblical values, then this book will not be very appealing to your sensibilities. Larry Burkett writes from a conservative, Christian based perspective. He gives Biblically-based practical guidance on budgeting, approaching debt, life insurance, retirement, teaching financial principals to your children, as well as several other financial issues. His assumption is that family is your priority and that when a married couple has children, the wife will stay home to care for the children -- thus he gives most guidance assuming that at some point a couple will have only one income. He also assumes that the husband takes his Biblical place as head of his home as leader, protector and provider. He uses the Bible to support his assertions.

What has helped us most is the easy-to-implement envelope system. It has helped us get a handle on our spending. He has other publications that explain the envelope system more indepth, but the overview provided in this book gives enough info to get you started.

In the end, this book helps you gain a Biblical approach to handling your finances. Some advice may seem contrary to worldly wisdom, but we know who we are to look to for guidance...

3 out of 5 stars Sound advice, but a little outdated.......2004-08-28

I noticed the reviews are either 5 stars or 1 star! This book definitely deserves more than 1 star as it does contain some very sound advice and is great for those who need good solid financial training.
I am a Christian, but found many of his principles to be outdated and just a little too conservative. This book was first published in 1989 and SERIOUSLY needs a updated version. He implies throughout the book that the woman should not work and if she does her income should only be used for "extra purchases" not for basing a budget on. Why? Because she might get preganant, some terrible ill befall her, and no longer work to support the family. (I am a nurse and have found that this is the exception, not the rule)
I also have a problem with the fact that he continually refers to the husband as the "wage-earner". I know plenty of families where the wife earns more money than the husband and they both share duties and expenses within the household. He also says that you should not spend your money on buying life insurance for the wife just to cover "funeral expenses" because of course all budget expenses should be based on the "wage-earner's" (the man's) salary. Therefore, life insurance is only truly necessary for the husband.
I don't want to sound like I'm bashing the book because the sections on training children to use money wisely and how to save for your future and get out of debt include some really excellent advice.
However, his theology and principles behind a lot of his advice are quite "old-school".

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!!!.......2003-04-15

Larry Burkett's advice cannot be highly stated enough. He has solid biblical direction, practical advice, and years of "field testing," making this a book which won't gather dust on your bookshelf.

He explores many topics, such as being able to buy a car or house; as well as is it wrong to borrow large amounts of cash. He also explores credit cards and life insurance, as well as the standards, such as budgets, teaching your children about financial principles, and seeing ahead towards economic trends and dangers.

For a good and practical read which can be applied to any situation, a great resource!!!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting information, practical steps.......2002-06-29

I really liked reading this book, Larry Burkett gives solid, down-to-earth information about how a young couple can make good financial decisions early on to prevent big problems down the way. While his whole book is not necessarily applicable to everyone (most young couples in expensive real estate areas will NEVER be able to buy a house with no debt or mortgage), much of it is very useful. Highly recommended.
