Outstanding artists.......2005-09-03
The Walt Reed book referred to by the other reviewers contains many more artists, but it has far smaller reproductions because there is so much packed in. By contrast the present book has some magnificent large and colourful illustrations that allow the reader to gain a better appreciation of each of the artists. The colour balance is wonderful (unlike some art books) and the selection of illustrators is great.

The book is an excellent supplement to one of the title by WaltReed-The Illustrators in America: 1880 to 1980. The book containnumerous sample illustrations by elected members of the American Society of Illustrators.

Books on illustrators, from the golden age to the present, with their vast sample illustrations are in constant demand these days due to titles going throught out-of-print listings. One excellent reference source-The Illustrator in America:1880- 1980 by Walt Reed contains hundreds of works by illustrators from the late 19th century to the 1980's. The book unfortunately, is now out-of-print. Now, a new recent addition has been published-Famous American Illustrators. The various listings and samples of illustrators from the book are all elected members of the American Society of Illustrators. The book is an excellent supplement for Walt Reed's title where the readers can view more samples of each of the illustrators' unique styles.

Man on Fire.......2007-03-30
A great friend of mine loaned me this book when I was preparing to write about what Tom Canning has dubbed the "Cinema of Attractions," and traced the concept back to one Eisenstein used in several of his essays. Happily enough they all appear in this book, which saved me from having to go through the complete FOUR VOLUMES of his writing, which might have been rewarding, I suppose, but at the time, too daunting even to contemplate. Like the other reviewer, from way back in 2000 when this compliation must have been new on the shelves, I was impressed by the editorial policy by which Richard Taylor worked, for having to encapsulate and to represent fairly a big 25 years of Eisenstein's writing on a huge range of subjects can't have been easy.
Beyond the range of subjects, there's also to consider that Eisenstein changed his mind freely, and the man who wrote "The Problems of Soviet Historical Film" in 1940 is not the same fellow who so blithely and expansively wrote in 1925 on "The Problem of the Materialist Approach to Form" (though now that I think of it, he seems continually concerned with the "problematic," you might say, doesn't he? It's as though his dialectic worked only when prompted from one direction, the question mark his iconic sign).
There's also the difference between the theoretical speculations of a stage director hovering over film as an undiscovered treasure, and the weary wisdom of a prematurely aged man who had lived through the regimes of both Moscow and Hollywood, a man who had beaten swords into ploughshares, and ploughshares back into swords for that matter, a man nearly beaten down ny fate. The arc of the book has a rainbow shape sharp as a Giacometti, and yet the individual aphorisms of the director ("Music is acting by other means") are like Zen koans, stuffed to capacity with meaning, beseeching the reader to tease them all out, like Robert Bresson's writing, except maybe a bit more bombastic--like Bresson flambee perhaps.
Eisenstein In His Own Words.......2000-03-31
This book is a compilation of what Richard Taylor considers to be Eisenstiein's most important and relevant writing, not only on film but also on Russian history, politics, and Eisenstein's eclectic influences. While I think the book is very well put together, Eisenstein's writing itself can be esoteric and hard for the reader to decipher. However, if you can get past Eisenstein's puzzling language, you can glean a great deal of valuable insight into the work of a man who has been called one of the most influential directors of all time. I was most interested in Eisenstein's writings on other art forms that informed his film making, particularly Kabuki theatre and Japanese Haiku. However, if this is your first time reading about Soviet cinema, I would recommend starting with some of Taylor's other works such as The Film Factory or Inside the Film Factory.

In this, the second and final volume of his landmark biography of conductor Otto Klemperer, author Peter Heyworth takes his subject from his exile from Germany in 1933 to his death at the age of 88 in 1973. The book covers Klemperer's difficult years in America and his return to Europe, his problems with Roman Catholicism and his return to Judaism, his encounter with Stalinism, his struggles with manic depression, and his efforts to be recognized as a composer ("Do you like my compositions, Mr. Barenboim?" he asked the then-rising young pianist; "No, Dr. Klemperer," was the reply); all is handled forthrightly and with a high level of scholarship. Heyworth died just before completing the book, which was seamlessly finished by his friend and colleague John Lucas. This is an invaluable portrait of an important musical figure, and the complete discography in the back will be particularly useful to anyone seeking to understand Klemperer and his contributions.

Wonderful, readable 2 volume biography of a fascinating man........2001-05-24
If you have an interest in classical music, then the name Otto Klemperer will be well known to you. Here is a beautifully presented two volume biography, very much a labour of love on the part of the author. A great read, and I particularly like having the notes at the foot of the page, not in an appendix.
Both volumes can be bought separately, but together come in a handsome slipcase.
I have read many biographies of famous conductors, and this ranks alongside Richard Osborne's book on Herbert von Karajan, and (best of all) Michael Kennedy's masterly and moving 'Barbirolli, Conductor Laureate', which I fear may be out of print.

An excellent book for those interested in Celtic Designs........2001-03-30
This is an excellent book for those looking to create celtic designs.
This book teaches the primitive geometric pater, the origin of the maze pattern, the mammoth hunter's maze, the meaning of mazes, and the camonica valley maze. It then goes into drawing mazes freehand, and has a collection of maze patterns.
The book is best used when accompianied by Aidan's other Celtic Design books. I have 7 of the books in this series and love them all!
All in all this is a great book for someone looking to create celtic designs.

Disappointing: New Agey not Authentically Celtic.......2002-04-03
This book is disappointing from beginning to end. The author seems to be sincere in her spiritual quest and anxious to share her insights with the reader. However, I'm not sure her insights are worth reading. First, the book is not about "Celtic" anything--it's an American's view of Scottish culture. Second, the author appears to be only superficially acquainted with Scottish history and traditions. From those impressions, she extrapolates generalizations about "Celtic" mindset and worldview that are not supported by the evidence. Indeed, those not new to Celtic cultures may question her conclusions. If you are interested in learning about Scottish culture and spirituality, I recommend Noragh Jones' _Power of Raven, Wisdom of Serpent_. That book will give you authentic Scottish tradition in a modern context.
Truth of the Celtic World Revealed.......1999-11-20

This book provides a splendid view of the Celtic world both past and present. Anyone in search of their Celtic roots or a better understanding of Celtic tradition must read this book. 'Walking The Maze' joins the likes of Tom Cowan's 'Fire in The Head' as a special glimpse into the Spiritual life of all Celts everywhere. Cruden's book makes the sometimes foggy world of Celtic mythology a little clearer. She also provides a real-life glimpse of modern day Celts and their history. This is an invaluable tool and suggested reading to anyone preparing to visit Scotland and/or Ireland.

This is a great book as are most of the books by the author. I enjoy his writting style and the great information and how positive he is in all he rights.
Building a Productive Team.......2006-09-02
This little book states well the mechanics of teambuilding and teamworkmanship, and I enjoyed reading it. In the end it shows that these mechanics can be summarized into ten distinct steps: (1) deciding on the importance of having a team; (2) assemblying a competent team; (3) doing what it takes to develop the team; (4) working like a team; (5) delegating power, responsibility to the team; (6) giving, not taking, credit for the success of the team; (7) collecting and sharing the returns from investment in the team's efforts; (8) divesting from underperforming team members; (9) opening and expanding opportunities for team growth; and (10) giving the team the reason, resources, and the chance to succeed.
In terms of depth and gusto this is not Maxwell at his best (I have read a few of his books), but the message of the book is clear even so. It is the notion that often cooperation enhances the collective comparative advantage of the team, making group specialization more productive than individual factor specialization. I have no evidence of my own against that, and I feel comfortable to agree, even if only for now. There is a lot to like about this book. Team leaders of both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations would benefit from reading this book.

I loved this book. Its a quick read. And it makes the point very quickly: Teams succeed, individuals don't! The glorified individuals we often hear of (steve jobs, bill gates, etc) are actually "leaders" leading successful teams. (Not that we don't know these things, but the book makes things obvious, very nicely.)
This book gives succinct recipes for building successful teams.
Read it. You will learn how to build a successful team in less than 1 hour.
Teetoncey .......2005-03-01
I give this book four stars. It was exciting and I was always on the edge of my seat. The book I read was Teetoncey, written by Theodore Taylor.
Young Ben O'Neal finds a girl on the banks of North Carolina. Mrs. O'Neal decides to take her in. Ben needs to learn to live with this young girl they call Teetoncey. Teetoncey does not talk and has lost her memory. In chapter 8, a doctor comes to check her and says, "Shock of one kind or another. It can be temporary or permanent. If she has brain damage, fare the' well. She'll be a vegetable. Better you ought to have left her in the surf...". Eleven chapters are left to solve this mystery.
I think this book falls under the mystery/adventure category. Figuring out who Teetoncey is, is considered the mystery in this story. Just who is this young girl?! I liked this book because you never knew what was going to happen next.
Theodore Taylor is from North Carolina. I think that is why he could describe the settings so well. The illustrations by Richard Cuffari also helped set the mysterious tone of the book.
I think this book is great for 10-13 year olds. This book won 18 Books for young people awards. I'm not surprised I liked it so much because I enjoyed another work by this author, The Cay. I definitely recommend this book!
Teetoncey.......2005-02-25
Teetoncey is writen by Theodore Taylor. This book is about a young boy named Ben who wants to show the men of the island that he is not a sissy. Ben and his mother,Rachel, live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. One night there is a sudden storm and tragic shipwreck that changes everything for Ben. This frail young girl that he helped save seems half-dead and cannot speak. As Ben helps this young girl to recover he shows the men how strong and caring he is like his dead father was.
If you look sea stories and adventure this book is for you. Although the ending is very exciting, the middle is very dull. I liked this book and i hope you do too!
