Customer Reviews:
One of very few books on cast iron collectibles.......2006-11-27
A useful book because it covers both doorstops *and* doorknockers, bookends, banks and other cast iron ephemera. The photographs are dark and the pricing is out of date, but there are very few books on cast iron collectibles, making this a valuable addition.

Book Description
This book tells the remarkable story of Germany`s World War II English language propaganda broadcasting operation and the swing band it used to send subversive American jazz and swing music over the airwaves to Allied listeners around the world. Bergmeier and Lotz provide the definitive account of the range and ingenuity of Nazi radio public relations, along with a full-length CD featuring rare tracks of the jazz propaganda classics.
Customer Reviews:
good stuff!.......2002-05-02
this book is really interesting... particularly if you're doing a project on propaganda or nazis. It gives insight on often neglected areas of politics- music. The accompanying CD is also a plus. The songs are really interesting (if sometimes distasteful).
A much wider review of nazi propaganda than swing music........1999-09-02
Overtly this is an account of radio jazz and popular music broadcast to Britain and US between 1939 and 1945. It is indeed an excellently researched analysis of how Goebbels' ministry sought, and failed, to undermine the enemy war effort by tuneful propaganda. The accompanying musical CD, featuring "Charlie" and his Orchestra, says it all and additionally includes some choice bits by William Joyce or Lord Haw Haw, including his final broadcast from Hamburg when he was plainly drunk at the microphone. The book also contains much insightful information on other radio traitors such as John Amery, Axis Sally (Mildred Gillars) and the American, Robert Best, who canvassed from Berlin his own candidacy against President Roosevelt in the 1944 election. There is much new material in this book both about musical swing and the traitors in general. It really gets under the surface of an obscure world war two subject. The CD itself is a real hoot!
The book is semi-informative, but the CD rocks!.......1999-01-02
Actually, I didn't much like the book--it was pretty much like a series of encyclopedia articles on the greats of Nazi propaganda, but the CD was truly hilarious. My (teenage) children couldn't understand the point of any of the songs, but I was singing "Let's go bombing, let's go bombing, like United Nations airmen do..." all next week.
Product Description
This is not a text book, per se, but it is one of the most helpful resources available. Ray Wright has thoroughly analyzed eight classic charts from the pens of Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico and Bob Brookmeyer. The complete full score for each part is presented and the following elements are isolated and discussed: voicings, orchestration, textures, melodic construction, climaxes, chords, etc. The benefit of this book is that you can actually SEE real charts, and then listen to the CD to learn how the written notes translate into REAL music. Highly recommended.
Product Description
Hexatonics, is the seventh volume of Jerry Bergonzi's series, Inside Improvisation. Hexatonic scales are six note scales. This book presents a practical method for the construction of hexatonic scales that are useful for both the improviser and composer. Many modern piano players use hexatonic voicings by stacking the triads to create a particular harmony. We improvise in the sound of the voicing and using hexatonic voicings and lines can lend a very contemporary sound.
As with the other books in this series, there is a play along CD of 24 tracks (including 5 demo tracks featuring Jerry) to try out all of these different sounds. Band includes Renato Chicco - piano; Dave Santoro - bass;and Andrea Michelutti - drums.

Blowhard Narrative Hides Whatever Good There is Here.......2006-03-27
All kinds of folksy crap like, "Now listen here, Son," gets in the way of whatever this guy has to say. He talks down to the reader, goes for obscurity in his tablature,, rather than clarification. I owned the book and actually couldn't wait to get rid of it. This is a book for people who have no ego and don't mind being treated like they have no brains.
best music book I have found!.......2006-02-15
This book is invaluable! I had piano lessons and guitar lessons as a kid but I never "got it." I read this book, and now I "got it." For the first time ever I know where chords come from, and I know the basics of how notes are chosen for the songs on the radio.
This books focuses on Blues, but the theory part will apply in principal to other styles of music. As for the Blues -- this book is one-stop shopping! Besides the theory from which scales, chords, and songs are made, all the notes for E and A across the entire fretboard are presented. More chords than you want are in there. Drills in E and A are in there. Numerous 12-bar and 8-bar Blues patterns are in there. Fifty little licks are in there. And the history of Blues music is in there.
Invaluable.
kinda dumb.......2005-07-25
Well, i didn't really like the whole narrative aspect of the book that much myself. it seemed to me to get in the way of the guitar instruction, and while there was some interesting information and culturization that occured while reading this, it would just be better to listen to some old records or maybe read something that goes into more depth about the music.
the actual instruction was where the book kinda suffered, mostly in the innane notational system that they devised. the different sized dots representing time values was pretty much the most confusing and stupid thing i've ever experienced..., they could have at least spaced them out more equally so you could tell what the values were.
there was some ok info about superimposing the major onto the minor pentatonic to get all the color tones, but then by saying one was the star, the other the crescent, etc. was like... what the hell? It's like they were trying so hard to seperate the instruction from standard music theory, which in principal i can agree with because standard western theory doesn't really cover anything well except for classical music, but then it just invents all these stupid terms and ways of teaching that are totally arbitrary rather than working with the materials that are all over the place in millions of other blues books.
blues you can use is a good series of blues books.

Not a textbook - Not a novel..........2004-07-28
It's a, it's a, you know, a! Damn! It's a book! A real fine book. I bought it to study the blues guitar thing. I was looking for some help to improve my blues playing. However, in the first three pages, I was stuck to this story that's going on in the book. Imagine that, a story in a blues guitar book. Well, as I read the book (which took three days), I found myself avoiding the reach for my guitar to practice what I was reading. I did not want to interrupt the story in which I was enthralled. So, after I read the book (story) I went back and studied the book - It worked! Everything I read is now engraved in the pages of my mind, and I play much better blues than I ever would have thought possible. If you play guitar, or want to play guitar, get this book (or borrow it if you can) - it's an experience.
Very thorough and enjoyable.......2002-06-05
Unlike any other music book I have ever seen. Rather than simply showing you various licks and techniques to memorize, Daniels goes deeply (really deep) into the theory behind the Blues, chord construction, major, Blues and relative scales, etc. In fact he gives a thorough background into music theory in general. (Though it is strictly via TAB, no standard notation here.)
The information is presented in the form of a story about and Old Man (called "Old Man") who teaches a young boy (called, you guessed it, "Boy") how to swing his axe. It sounds a bit hokey, but it's fun and it works. I guess that's what I like about this book. The info sticks in your brain and in your fingertips.

Good book for its intended audience.

Customer Reviews:
don't get both books.......2007-09-22
I recommend not buying both of the Few books - there's what seems to be quite a bit of overlapping content between them -- pick the one book that is closer to what you're working on and just get that one, it'll cover what you need.
There are some interesting concepts in here - if you read his blog you'll have a really good idea for what you're getting.

Great Book for Business.......2007-07-12
Show Me the Numbers provides the practical and useful information needed to creat tables and graphs to effectively tell your quantitative story. Through numerous examples and illustrations, Stephen Few points out the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly ways that quantitative data can be presented. Numbers are important to any business. This book provides the reader with the tools needed to fluently communicate using the language of numbers.
Not a Great Advance.......2007-05-13
This is a very basic overview of easy descriptive statistics, combined with some Tufte-esque notes on graph display, but for the more sophisticated reader on metrics/data/stats, this is not a real keeper. About 20% of it was new or thought-provoking, so if you're already well-read on this topic, don't get this one.
Excellent Book.......2007-04-12
This is a great book which clearly elucidates design principles. The fact that all the graphs explained are created in Excel also makes the book more practicable.
Good graph/table, insightful techniques, clumsy writing.......2007-01-28
The book's content is good and useful for the analyst who needs to present numbers concisely and clearly, making people understand at the first sight.
However, the writing of the book is a bit clumsy. The book progresses slowly. This book makes its point only at the middle of the book. I was expecting the book went straight to the point to share about the techniques of presenting numbers effectively at the very front pages.
