H.C. Westermann's sculptures and constructions follow no models and are unique in modern American art. Direct, simple objects that achieve great sophistication and subtlety, they make profound comments on society and the human condition without being overtly burdened by theory. Westermann grew up in L.A., "great city of the vernacular," where Hollywood films had a larger impact on him than fine arts. One of the authors describes him as an "American everyman." Idiosyncratic, a loner in his work though not his personal life, he trained in Chicago, then settled in rural Connecticut rather than self-conscious New York (where in 1959 his first show was deflated by the critics). Besides being the catalog of an exhibition of Westermann's work organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, H.C. Westermann is the best monograph on the artist to date. Four lively essays describe his career and analyze his work. One of his defining experiences, witnessing the loss of a ship with 2,000 lives as a marine in WWII, resulted in a series of sculptures that he titled Death Ships, meticulously conceived in a variety of materials, from dollar bills to ebony. He exorcized his demons and was a fine friend, neighbor, and husband. Happily married and a consummate craftsman, he came to "equate the strength and beauty of a dovetail joint with the foundation of a good home and a good life." Excellent.......2006-04-23

This is a comprehensive look at the sculpture work of H. C. Westermann. Excellent paper stock, solid binding, and large, full-color illustrations throughout. This really is one of the best books production-wise and of course, the artwork is excellent. With this book it felt like the definitive story of H.C. Westermann has been told.

Note of confusion: This entire book is duplicated in the "Catalogue Raisonne" book, but the other book also includes a section section containing many black and white images of his entire sculptural output. This is done mainly as a reference resource and not really intended for visual enjoyment (which is why the images are black and white and not color). I personally find black and white images of artwork not enjoyable to look at because much of the texture and nuances are missing so unless you are an H. C. Westermann scholar or collector, the Raisonne isn't necessary in my opinion.

one of a kind.......2001-08-31

This book is invaluable for Westermann fans. This is the first publication to come along that is comprehensive and includes little known works. There are only a few publications on this artist and they are nowhere near as complete as this one. The photos of the works are large, crisp, and show the details in the work. The history on the artist and his life is informative as well. I highly recommend this for those who know Westermanns work and for those unaquainted with it...this book will win you over.

A classic text.......2002-08-22

While the book does fully discuss the "basic forms of prophetic speech" in detail, it is not a text that can be taken lightly. Much of the information seems a bit convoluted at times and the author seems to be repetitious and occasionally self contradictory. This is a text for serious study of prophetic works contained within the OT and is a classic reference for those willing to muddle through minutia.

H.C. Westermann makes art objects. Mostly he makes them out of wood, sometimes other materials. He makes his art objects small and large, all sizes. His objects are not sculptures although it is mostly an academic argument. Somer objects are quite large and elaborate and can pass for a sculpture. The question that always arises with an art object is: Is it art or is it both? H.C. is both an artist and craftsman. Once you had a chance to stand eye to eye with his work you will know at once that he is an artist. The book under review is a superb work of art itself. It does a very good job presenting the artist and his work. The book is arranged in a chronological order and shows a representative sample of H.C.'s work.

There are actually two books in one. The second part is a catalog raisonne of his work.

If you are looking for a particular subject ONLY, you might be disappointed. However, if you are looking for general coverage with very good coverage in each area, this is a very good book.

You are introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh characters and given details about their personalities. You are given good card / deck intros and strategies. You are given a list of cards with their attributes and descriptions.

All of it is easy reading and written well in proper English. Definitely a gotta-get for Yu-Gi-Oh fans.

I saw this book at the store. It looked really detailed so I bought it.

It has bios from the manga & anime. It has reviews of cartoons that were never shown in the U.S.

And there's a ton of cool stuff about the CCG. There's a lot of Top 10 Lists & Killer Decks. About 80 pages of this book deal with the Card Game.

There's also stuff on the Video Games. I'm not a big fan of 3D, but the book does have eight 3D images & 3D glasses inside.

All in all, if you are into the YuGiOh anime, manga, or Card Game. This book is a must have. It's a great resource! I learned a lot about the history of YuGiOh that we might not ever see in the U.S.

This is a good intro, without much information on actual grants for specific purposes. Grant writing for dummies....as a reference.......2006-11-13

This is a good starter book, but it does not provide quality resources for you to practice the skills gained. You should build your skills with quality templates, references, wording techniques. I would caution readers to move on to a good intermediate work like Government Funding and You. This book will provide you with the skills to put together a quality grant with the potential LAND that grant. This book is an excellent start, but Government Funding and You is a crucial next step.

I was working at a NON-PROFIT organization and the departing Executive Director refused to submit a renewed grant request to a Federal agency. I was tasked to do it instead within one week. I had no support of the staff or Board of Directors because they did not have a clue of the process. I had never written a grant. So, I purchased this book and read it over the weekend. It was easy to read and made sense. I simply followed the book...identified a problem/an unmet need and a way to solve it. Thank you! The agency was awarded $250,000 to fund two of the full-time employees over a 2 year period.

Each one of the "Dummies" books has been so helpful, not only for me but for my daughter who is in high school. Everything from religion to business. "Grant Writing for Dummies" is in keeping with the others: very informative, gets to the point for the layperson, and is done in a very easy-to-use format. So far, I haven't come across one book in this series that isn't helpful!

I found this book extemely helpful and easy to read. It reduced the mystery of the grant world to something even I could understand. Based on the title, I have to say that I can do this!
