The Fashion Reader
ASIN: 0805054871 |
Book Description
While fashions of the rich and famous have been endlessly chronicled, little attention has been paid to the meaning of clothes for everyone else. Yet between 1890 and 1940, as ready-to-wear came into its own, fashion for ordinary Americans played an increasingly important role in shaping the national character. Drawing on advertisements and health manuals, sermons and songs, acclaimed historian Jenna Weissman Joselit shows how the length of a woman's skirt, the shape of a man's hat, and the height of a pair of heels enabled citizens of every faith, color, and class to feel part of the modern nation. Engaging, imaginative, and original, A Perfect Fit uncovers a time in our history when getting dressed was more about fitting in than standing out.

Clothes as a Social Statement in the United States.......2001-09-18
When immigrants first came to the United States, they were free of the tyranny of the place they were born into in their native country. But American society often pegged them by the clothes they wore, just as harshly as their birth did in the native land.
The good news was that clothes can be changed, and millions of people did just that . . . changed their appearance to look like the native-born Americans. People wanted to fit in, as part of their desire to live the free life. Is it so different now? Even the most extreme teenage styles conform to a sense of fashion that indicates that you fit in.
A Perfect Fit focuses on the period of peak immigration, from around 1890 through the 1920s. Women's and men's wear get equal emphasis, although the women's wear is vastly more interesting. You will follow hemlines up (for style and hygiene reasons), the subtleties of the right hat (not too showy), shoes into sizes (but women insisted on appearance anyway), furs (in as a sign of arriving and out as a sign of cruelty to animals), and jewelry (moderation in all things is a virtue, but a diamond does last longer than flowers). Along the way you will enjoy many fine illustrations that display the styles, advertisements, and the way these were worn by people.
A strength of the book is that it covers how people from different backgrounds responded to fashion. There is extensive coverage of what immigrant Jews favored, and a focus on African American preferences. There's even a section on the advent of the Zoot suit. The author also does a nice job of considering the tension between restrained good taste and flamboyance.
It was fascinating to think about the shock that the flapper style with bobbed hair must have been. The miniskirt and the no-bra look of the 1960s was a minor shift by comparison from what went before.
Over time, clothes have gone from formal and being a badge of status, to informal, healthy, and comfortable. Let's hope that trend continues. I like my sneakers!
A Perfect Fit also has some interesting facts in it that I did not know before. For example, the Audubon Society was formed to help stop the slaughter of herons whose feathers were prized for very showy hats. Ostrich feathers can be harvested without killing the bird, which is why you will see so many more ostrich feathers in display uses today.
As far as the book goes, it is very fine. I was disappointed that the investigation of social character did not include selections from important social thinkers of the times. It would also have been interesting to know about more types of social groups. What did Hispanic people do during this time? How were Irish-American styles different from Italian-American ones? I was also curious about what the most famous people of the time wore. And Edward Bernays is famous for his work in creating fashion during this time through color. Little is said on that subject. So think of this book as an appetizer on the subject, rather than as the whole meal. I graded the book down accordingly.
After you read this book, think about how healthful your choice of clothes is. How could you improve your selections and still feel good about yourself? How about a new hat for the holidays?
Always improve the person wearing the clothes at least as much as you improve the clothes that are worn!

Book Description
Throughout his adventures across the mythic Hyperborean world, the barbarian called Conan crosses swords with many colorful and dangerous characters, somehow always finding himself on the wrong end of a wizard's wrath, or staring down the hungry jaws of a nightmarish beast. Proving himself more than a match for whatever came his way, Conan has become one of the most enduring and strangely endearing characters in all of popular culture. The stories in this edition feature more tales of thrilling adventure and chilling betrayal as only writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema could deliver.

MID-70'S CLASSICS FROM THOMAS & BUSCEMA.......2006-04-06
The Chronicles of Conan Volume 7 is a special volume for me. It collects issues # 43 - 51 of the Conan the Barbarian comic from Marvel Comics which is the exact time I first started reading Conan some 32 years ago. I probably haven't read these since first buying them way back then but it's amazing how much I still remember about the stories all these years later. The stories are by Roy Thomas (although adapted from other writers, notably Gardner Fox) with art by penciller John Buscema and a host of inkers included Ernie Chua, Dick Giordano, Joe Sinnott, and The Crusty Bunkers...which was Neal Adams or some of his prot?g?s. The color has been re-mastered and anyone who complains about this fact obviously never saw, or has forgotten just how drab the pixilated color looked on old newsprint. The re-mastered, lush coloring is gorgeous and is a major attraction of the reprint.
In the first, two issue story arc, Conan and Red Sonja find themselves on the run from a band of bounty hunters and enter a mysterious valley enshrouded by red fog. They find a tower but soon find themselves dazed and pass out. They are prisoners of brother and sister sorcerers Morophla and Uathacht. The pair were cursed by Stygian wizard Thoth Amon, and now live as vampires, feeding off the blood of others to survive. Rather than hunt, they have a herd of human cattle to feed on but over the years these have degenerated into loathsome life forms, barely able to sustain the blood-suckers. They now plan to use Conan and Sonja to mate with the savages to revitalize them.
The story "Curse of the Conjurer" is freely adapted from the Gardner F. Fox Kothar novel called "Kothar and the Conjurer's Curse". Now this is an odd dynamic. Kothar is obviously Fox's version of Conan, written in 1970 just as the Conan comic debuted...and now here's Roy Thomas taking a Kothar story and turning it into a Conan story with little changed. Conan is hired by a mage to deliver a mystical amulet to the Regent of Phalkar. Along the way he finds a woman about to be killed by a mob after she is accused of being a witch. Conan rescues Stefanya, and she takes him on a detour to get back to her master, the wizard Zoqquanor. Zaqquanor is found dead and she insists they take his body with them to Phalkar. Along the way Conan faces numerous challenges such as the guards who kidnap Stefanya and tie Conan to the ground to be devoured by rats. Then there is that Lovecraftian Monstrosity that rises out of the pool to try and devour Conan, before finally facing the demon-spawned Unos.
Both stories are solid and show Conan at his brawling, sword-wielding best. As always, the other treat to these books are the recollections by Roy Thomas who comments on the various stories and how they were developed. Another outstanding collection from Dark Horse!

Book Description
Shawn Wayans (star of the hit prime-time WB Network Television show The Wayans Bros.), Chris Spencer (host of the upcoming national late night talk show Vibe), and Suli McCullough (up-and-coming comedian, actor, writer) bring their lively brand of humor to the page in a book sure to tickle city- and country-bound alike. More than a place, the authors remind us, "ghetto" is a state of mind; "If Hillary Clinton ever picked up Chelsea from school with rollers in her hair...guess what? The First Lady be ghetto."
Among other ways to tell if you're ghetto:
You can read your haircut
You throw a pool party at the fire hydrant
You buy pagers to match your outfits
You go to church just to pick up women
Your fingernails are longer than your fingers
You have a car phone and no car
You take a bubble bath with dishwashing liquid
You get into a fistfight while you're pregnant
You missed the birth of your child because you were playing Sega
You named your daughters after cars you can't afford

Funniest..truest stuff I ever read. I can't stop laughing!.......2005-03-12
This is a pretty old book but everything continues to apply. I know someone who fits every image...every page. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down. After laughing til your eyes run and your stomach hurts, you'll know you 'had enough', but will you lay it down? Hell no! You keep on laughin' (holding your stomach) til everything aches. THEN YOU PUT THE BOOK DOWN!
Pretty good.......2002-11-30
I was surprised at how good this book was, simply because of the authors. When I think about funny jokes I usually don't think of Chris Spencer (the original host of the short-lived Vibe show) and I sure don't think of Shawn Wayans. But most of the jokes in this book are actually pretty funny, with the exception of a few that make absolutely no sense (for example, "You know you're ghetto if you missed the birth of your child because you were playing Sega.") The funniest part of the book, though, has to be the back cover, where Damon Wayans pops up and says, "You're ghetto if you read this entire book in the store and don't buy it." Jokes like this are pretty out of style now, but this book was good for the late `90s.
Very Funny.......2001-08-09
I don't know what to say except that I highly recommend this for a quick laugh. I've read through it several times and laugh at each read.
BITER!!.......2000-09-15
What a terrible attempt to bite Bertice Berry's book!! These were not nearly as funny as Bertice's! Gimme a break guys, better yet get some ideas of your own. I would have never published this after Bertice did her thing(even if you thought of this idea before she did). She beat you to it!
So Funny It Hurts.......2000-09-10
Written by comedians Shawn Wayans (television's "In Living Color"; "Scary Movie"; "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"), Chris Spencer ("Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"), and Suli McCullough ("Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"), "150 Ways to Know If You're Ghetto" is a hysterical satire of life in the ghetto. With outrageous, comical illustrations by George Hay, the books looks at life in the ghetto in a humorous view, by poking fun at stereotypes that are obviously true.
This book will make anyone laugh, especially if you grew up or live in any huge urban metropolis where a ghetto exists. I grew up in New York City, and can I tell you that I could not stop laughing after reading this book, because it is so, so true. I have known girls whose names start with "La," "Ta," and "Sha". I know people who still think that Tupac Shakur faked his death, and I surely seen people jump into fights that don't involve them. These and the other 147 reasons are guaranteed to make anyone who grew up in such cities as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles roll on the floor laughing.
Being a small, thin book with only 79 pages should make this an easy read while you commute or travel, however I must warn you that people will stare at you if you start to laugh too hard. In the same way the Wayans' brothers spoofed the blaxploitation films of the 1970's with the film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka," the authors of this book do the same when it comes to urban life. Hysterical in every sense of the word, "150 Ways to Tell You're Ghetto" will keep your funny bone entertained for hours.

Great Deal!!!.......2005-10-18
It is really informative and complete for the ones who wish to learn the basics of filming, and its history.
Sometimes good, sometimes disappointing.......2005-10-02
Not bad, but a bit disappointing. At its core, it's an overview of key moments in the history of film, with major milestones covered in 4- to 10-page chapters. It reads briskly and it structured well.
Because of all that, it SHOULD be a good read. But it's ... well, just okay. The author relies too much on the words of others, brings none of his own flair to the writing. Plenty of quotes and opinions from others in the field, little in the way of new insights or viewpoints. I have read webpages with better assessments of various eras in film.
This makes this a non-essential for folks who already known their film, but that doesn't mean this doesn't have value for a film student or someone new to film. The book does offer a nice look at various periods in film history, and the chapters on key film movements were well done, inspiring me to watch some stuff I may not have otherwise seen.
Can't give it the highest recommendation possible, but you won't hate yourself for owning this.
you made a mistake.......2005-07-30
this book is not by Joe Bob Briggs- he wrote the forward - better rewrite this page
i wish we had this textbook in film school.......2004-12-31
rausch's, "turning points in film history" is a rare example of a highly entertaining textbook. i wish we had books like this is film school. you know a book has some serious style when joe bob briggs does an intro. it just doesn't get any more cool than that.
film schools across the country and aspiring filmmakers take note. this one's a must read!
Product Description
The battle between England and France which was decided in Quebec determined the future of Canada, and of the United States as well. This program describes the founding of Quebec in 1608, and of the French colony, Canada. A hundred and fifty years later, in 1759, it was officially named New Francea small colony of some 60,000 living along the banks of the St. Lawrence; Montreal had been founded; and French explorers had explored, and claimed in the name of their king, territories from the frozen North down to the Gulf of Mexico. Seeking to restrain the English colonists, who outnumbered the French perhaps 20 to 1, the French built a series of forts, Ft. Duquesne and Ft. Niagara among them. The program analyzes the causes for the French and Indian War, the strategies and feints, and shows the siege of Quebec and the final bitter battle on the Plains of Abraham in which both Wolfe and Montcalm perished. Three days later Quebec fell to the Britishthe end of Quebec as a province of France but not, as we have come to understand, as a French province.

The best..........2007-03-19
Barrett's practical and accessible books show how good he is as an instructor. I own his books on Music Theory and Guitar Fretboard and these are THE BEST that I have seen on music instruction... period. Difficult concepts are broken down into small steps and driven down using the workbook approach (i.e. written practice) with the answer key included. When I look for new stuff I check first to see if Barrett has written about it. I've also found books by Mark John Sternal to be very good.
I hope Barrett (and his publisher) continues to produce more advanced music instruction material, and arranges his books into a "recommended" program. The workbook format works great and can be complemented by cds, dvds, web instruction, computer music software (sonar, cubase?) etc.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent starting point. Great book.......2003-03-05
I really enjoyed the book. Read it from cover to cover, then again, before making the plunge and buying my first heli.
The book is somewhat outdated on a few things (gyroscope, radio gears), but give the newcomer a good understanding of what it takes to build and fly RC helicopters. As the title says, it only covers the basics, but does a pretty good at that.
I was disappointed with this book.......2000-05-24
I found this book too basic. Most of the book is about choosing the right equipment. There are only a few chapters on flying. I found alot of this information by searching Deja News and reading rec.models.rc.helicopter.
Great book for beginners!.......2000-05-10
This book is very well setup and organized for the beginner in mind. It does not assume that you know everything, and by the end of the book, you'll know enough to finally fly a helicoptor. However, the tech info is slightly outdated (1995), but it is still very helpful. I'd strongly recommend it. I'd also recommend getting Milt's Helicopter videos too!

Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed to Do and What To Do About It.......2006-08-30
Lot's of effective hands on things you can use immediately. Great use of your time & enjoyable to read as well.
A common workplace question definitively answered........2006-05-02
The truth is that in this book, as in others expressing simple truth, the value may be in the reminder. Others who have reviewed this book seem to think that its content may be somewhat simplistic, or maybe just basic stuff. My observation is that yes, for me, much of the information in the book is basic, the ideas are not new to me, nor are the recommended responses. The fact remains that in too many work places productivity is less than optimum and is not what it might be because of the specific reasons offered in this little book.
Whether you have ever been expected to manage employees or not, you will relate to the content of this small volume. Those who manage others will gather hints on how to better understand their reports and will receive suggestions that if used will allow them to become better managers. All employees will gain a perspective from which they will be better able to communicate the frustrations they may be experiencing in their work situation.
This short book should be read by all who work.
Good Basics and Several Great Tips.......2006-05-01
Talk about a super long title that clearly states what a book is about! When you pick up "Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed To Do and What To Do About It" by Ferdinand F. Fournies, there's no doubt what you think you are getting. The question is of course if you DO get that and how valuable the information is.
There are apparently 16 different reasons why an employee might not do what they should. These are: They don't know why, they don't know how, they don't know what, they think your way won't work, they think their way is better, they think something else is more important, there are no positive consequences, they think they ARE doing it, they are rewarded for NOT doing it, they are punished for doing it, they anticipate negative consequences, there are no negative consequences for NOT doing it, there are obstacles they can't fix, they have personal limits, they have personal problems, and the task is simply impossible. That's quite a lot of reasons for one "problem"! Just having that list can really be helpful. A manager who thinks "My employee is simply an idiot! I told him what to do!" might take a step back and realize there really IS a problem that can be fixed, once it is identified.
I realize that a lot of these items are common sense - but it's amazing how many times in the workplace that I've seen bad managers completely ignore the real problem and just yell at an employee. That rarely helps!
Now, while the basic list is good, I do have some issues with this book. The first is that the book opens telling you "Now a manager could be assaulted or killed by the employee [for not handling problems effectively]." Good God Almighty. Talk about a nasty way to sell a book - "read me or you could DIE!!!"
The book does a good job of laying out each type of problem in detail, and then giving specific solutions. You might say "they're common sense" but obviously if so many managers out there are NOT handling these situations well, they need a little kick in the behind. Maybe they're just too stressed and aren't actually thinking about the problem. Maybe this book will help give them that extra insight they need into using a good solution.
One thing that bothers me is that the book makes it seem that every problem CAN be solved by following these few easy steps. There's a small FAQ in the back that says in essence "Oh yeah, sometimes this fails and you'll have to demote or fire the person." It would have been more helpful if in each section there were the regular tips, but also "drastic steps" and then "when to give up". I suppose they want to be positive - but if they give you only a few things to try, and they aren't working, it would be good to have a progression of what to do next. To keep trying those same things becomes an exercise in futility and frustration. In fact, it's sort of funny, he says at one point that, if these tips don't work, go buy my next book to learn what to do then :)
Still, it's a good basic primer for the new manager of how to handle a variety of situations. I definitely have worked in many situations where managers did NOT know these things and the environment suffered because of it. If you feel like you already know these things, borrow the book at the library and skim through - you might pick up a tip or two. If you're a new manager, then I would suggest buying this. It's the sort of book that you read in the bathroom, going just over a single chapter, and focussing on how to handle that one specific issue. You're probably going to run into all of these issues over time, if you stay on a managerial path.
Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed To Do and What To Do About It.......2005-09-03
This is a well written, easy to read, common sense guide for managers and supervisors of all levels of experience. You don't have to be an MBA to understand and use the information provided.
Good Stuff.......2005-08-30
This is a basic book for all new managers. It tell you about all the things they don't teach you in school and gives you concrete action plans to take away the negative impact of the problem. The key areas are ranked as to their occurrence in the management environment. It is a quick read and an even faster process of applying the essentials. Great Book! I am recommending it to my students.
