    Book Description

Published on the occasion of a major exhibition opening at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Inside the Visible presents a gendered reading of more than thirty women artists of vastly different background and experience. The work of important yet previously "invisible" figures is highlighted alongside the work of established artists to create a retheorized interpretation of the art of this century.

Structured in terms of recurrent cycles over time, Inside the Visible focuses on three periods (the 1930s and 1940s, the 1960s and 1970s, and the 1990s) that anticipated a wave of political repression, nationalism, and xenophopia, often stimulating artistic production that redefined practice. Illustrated essays document each artist in the collection. In addition, four general essays trace the connections among the artists. These take up such issues as why artistic recognition eluded certain artists and why their work is only just becoming visible today. They also address overlapping themes such as gender and sexuality; the intersection of racial, class, ethnic, sexual, and regional identities; and the nature of the relationship between work and viewer.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets.......2006-12-07

Books on men's dress history of any quality are few and far between so it is a delight to find something a thorough as this one. Most of the time all you find are snippets of information in between the volumes of things written on women's fashion history but here at last is a book devoted entirely to men's dress. I know of no other book which has so many pictures as this one with so many eras being covered in this degree of detail. Some eras are covered better with the greatest strength probably the 18th to early 20th century with other periods being covered in less depth.

Illustrations are plenty in this book and as usual from this author each one is carefully researched and beautifully demonstrate the essential feature of each period's dress. One might complain that photographs might have been better but the problem is that limited examples of original clothing have survived or have done so only in poor condition. Museums are also reluctant to display many things because of the fragility of the items.

Of course you can complain about a lack of text too but that is to look a gift horse in the mouth. You can likewise also complain that regional variations in dress (England vs France vs Germany vs Italy vs Russia etc) are not covered and nor the difference between different social groups (based on profession and social class) throughout the ages. However if you put in full textural explanations about the social implications of dress in Shakesperean England or the pro-aristocratic significance of ruffled shirts in post-revolutionary France you would soon end up with an encyclopedia running several volumes. The fact is this book is as good as it gets until some publisher demonstrates a willingness to print such a massive undertaking. So give thanks that someone has published this gem in the meanwhile for it is truly excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Highly useful book on men's fashion.......2004-04-20

Just a picture book? A GREAT picture book, with detailed captions to help you understand what you see.

Most fashion reference books have a few sketches or photos of men's attire for each 20-100 years or so. This book has dozens. For example, Day Wear 1897-1900 has 8 full sketches including shoes and accessories and another 8 for Day Wear 1900-1907. Then there's Sports & Leisure Wear and Evening Wear, Footwear and more.

I need to dress a man for a 1900 picnic. I turn to Day Wear and have quite a few choices. This allows me to select several that use garments I already have on hand and easily determine what other items would be appropriate--if bow ties are were worn or shoes have pointed toes, etc.

I got this book at the library, then couldn't function without it, so I had to buy it. There might be a book this useful for men's fashion after 1920, but I've never seen anything this helpful for any period before then.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection and invaluable resource........2000-11-28

This is the most fantastic book of gentlemen's vintage clothing that I have ever read. It is filled from cover to cover with detailed drawings, in both color and B&W, accompanied by a decription with every item shown in this great book.

Example, (the following has a detailed color drawing and reads as follows): Day Wear 1928. British. Single-breasted grey wool overcoat, wide lapels, inset sleeves with split cuffs, button trim, large patch-and-flap pockets, top-stitched edges and detail. Straight-cut trousers with turn-ups. Collar-attached shirt. Striped tie. Trilby hat. Two-tone leather brogues. Leather gloves. Walking Stick. The drawing that accompanies the above description is in color so that you may see the correct colors to be used.

This is a wonderful book and is a must have for any gentlemen interested in vintage clothing. It's a guide for having the clothes remade for your own personal everyday wear or for studying.

2 out of 5 stars Nice picture book.......1999-07-26

I checked this book out at a local book store. It might be a good resource for a costume designer or fashion maven, but contains no "real" information (very little text, no explanations of clothing styles or traditions, etc.).

          Book Description

Georgia on My Mind, Rockin' Chair, Skylark, Lazybones, and of course the incomparable Star Dust--who else could have composed these classic American songs but Hoagy Carmichael? He remains, for millions, the voice of heartland America, eternal counterpoint to the urban sensibility of Cole Porter and George Gershwin. Now, trumpeter and historian Richard M. Sudhalter has penned the first book-length biography of the man Alec Wilder hailed as "the most talented, inventive, sophisticated and jazz-oriented of all the great songwriters--the greatest of the great craftsmen." Stardust Melody follows Carmichael from his roaring-twenties Indiana youth to bandstands and recording studios across the nation, playing piano and singing alongside jazz greats Jack Teagarden, Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and close friends Bix Beiderbecke and Louis Armstrong. It illuminates his peak Hollywood years, starring in such films as To Have and Have Not and The Best Years of Our Lives, and on radio, records and TV. With compassionate insight Sudhalter depicts Hoagy's triumphs and tragedies, and his mounting despair as rock-and-roll drowns out and lays waste to the last days of a brilliant career. With an insider's clarity Sudhalter explores the songs themselves, still fresh and appealing while reminding us of our innocent American yesterdays. Drawing on Carmichael's private papers and on interviews with family, friends and colleagues, he reveals that "The Old Music Master" was almost as gifted a wordsmith as a shaper of melodies. In all, Stardust Melody offers a richly textured portrait of one of our greatest musical figures, an inspiring American icon.

5 out of 5 stars Sudhalter does it again.......2002-09-19

We owe Richard Sudhalter for preserving the often-forgotten history of America's early jazz pioneers and composers. His subjects are white musicians, but he doesn't write about them with a nasty political agenda. He just doesn't want their contributions to be forgotten. Along the way, he pays warm tribute to the black musicians who led the musical revolution. Unfortunately, politically-charged reviewers refuse to see this.
I especially love this Sudhalter work. Sadly, Hoagy is becoming a forgotten genius of American song. Duke Ellington once called him America's greatest songwriter, and Sudhalter goes a long way in providing the evidence to such a claim. I especially enjoyed the focus on Hoagy's home state of Indiana, which was an amazing hotbed for jazz in the 1920s. One should take this book and drive around Bloomington, Indiana, and find all of the haunts described in rich detail by Sudhalter. Then go to Indianapolis, and Richmond, Indiana. Sudhalter really did us all a huge favor in providing such a wonderful document.

5 out of 5 stars Who really wrote Star Dust?.......2002-08-19

Hoagy Carmichael's college roommate, Hank Wells, claimed all his life that Hoagy, consciously or subcon- scioujsly, stole Star Dust from him. People in his home- town of Lake Bluff, Ill., said that this "broke his heart." Wells visited back and forth with the parents of a friend of mine, and she personally heard him tell this story. He played piano at her wedding..
I have read Hoagy's own words about Star Dust quoted in a book and they are cryptic. He does indeed imply that the song came out of nowhere into his mind.
Two facts: (a) What if a man wrote one great song that was unusual and never wrote another? Why is that?
          (b) Why could one man write such a great song and then
never equal or exceed it in his long writing career. Why?
Only one set of facts fits that scenario. Hank Wells, heartbroken, never wrote again. Hoagy couldn't write anything so good on his own.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate, well written.......2002-07-07

My father, Bud Dant, is prominently featured in this book, as a man who helped Hoagy write down Stardust and I grew up hearing about the stories and now here they all are in a book...not just a book, but what I know is an extremely accurate and real account of Hoagy's life...the writing is terrific and Richard's obvious love of the music and times shows in his accounts...I know for a fact he researched this material exhaustively...it shows! It pretty much dwarfs all other books on Hoagy.

4 out of 5 stars AN EXTRAORDINARILY TALENTED SONGSMITH.......2002-04-26

Whatta life! From poverty to great wealth based on musical talent of creating songs as well as a wonderful actor. He had many highlights writing songs and acting but after rock & roll took over the musical scene his talents went for nothing as no youth were interested.

Mr. Sudhalter covers Hoagy's entire life and an interesting one it was. The writing in many places is of a "text book" nature, but the content of relating Hoagy's life puts the reader in the center of life as it existed in the 20's through the 60's. Apparently Hoagy's type of music is gone forever which is a loss without question. New generations continue on and what was usually stays behind as merely history.

SOCIAL DANCE is written by a master teacher who has done a lot of research on her subject. The person who will benefit from using this book is not someone who is looking for an easy method to learn a few dance routines. It is rather meant for the serious enthusiast who knows how to study a textbook and appreciates the value of long hours of practice. It will also be useful to those who already know something about swing, cha-cha, fox-trot, waltz and polka and wish to increase their social dance skills.

4 out of 5 stars How to Boost Returns with Tax Strategies.......2006-07-20

Just about all of the advice in the book will help a real estate investor enhance his returns through smart tax planning. Saving money on taxes means more to the bottom line, which increases returns. This is not a rah-rah get pumped up to do deals type book, more of a step by step type explanation of how to best protect yourself (using LLC's or Corporations) and how to save on taxes (1031 exchange). They also touch on the relatively new TIC (Tenants in Common) structure, which is looking more and more useful because it will let partners out of a deal to do a 1031 without having to sell the whole property.

Overall it's all stuff a real estate investor needs to know, but I personally would have liked more real life deal examples. In Dolf's 52 homes in 52 weeks there are lots of examples (52) of him doing deals with a breakdown of the profit or loss on each.

5 out of 5 stars Finding more tax loopholes.......2005-08-19

I thought "Real Estate Investing Loopholes" was put together really well. It has a lot of information that will help you find the tax loopholes that will help you best. My favorite Chapter was "Be Paid to Live in Your Home", by having a home office I have been able to write off more expenses and pay less tax. It works. I highly recommend this book. Thanks Diane and Dolf.

5 out of 5 stars Great source for Real Estate Information.......2005-07-30

I really liked the chapter, Smart Business Structures That Reduce Risk and Tax. Now I think I better understand the differences between the possible structures and will be able to ask better questions when I am ready to start investing. Also, I like that this book has practical information and is not just trying to dazzle me with get rich quick nonsense. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in real estate.
