With menus and vintage photographs from some of the greatest dining establishments of the era, this survey of a popular artform offers an uncommon perspective on design in the early half of the century -- as well as a glimpse of prices and culinary preferences of yesteryear. From the elegance of Art Nouveau to playful Art Deco designs to the ultra-modernism of the late Ô50s, this is an exciting new y'nd for artists, designers, and restaurateurs looking for ideas and inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2003-04-09

As a designer, I consider this a must-have as a visual reference, though incomplete because of it's general lack of interior art. I suspect the cover art is prevalent because of it's appeal to collectors. Well-designed presentation by Jim Heimann. Glad to have it, but I want to see more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical book inspires journey down memory lane!.......2001-02-16

As the author of "Restaurant China, Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware, Volume 1 and Volume 2," I was delighted when I received this excellent historical resource. The 1000+ priceless photographs, along with difficult to document dates and locations are most appreciated. In addition, it is a pleasure to simply page through Jim Heimann's books and imagine life as it was in days gone by.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book..........1999-01-16

I thought the book was great, but I was hoping it would show more of menu interiors rather than the covers/exteriors. While folks can show you excerpts from text...it's a bit harder when you are buying a book for the images.

    Book Description

In the first comprehensive study of Roman ancestor masks in English, Harriet Flower explains the reasons behind the use of wax masks in the commemoration of politically prominent family members by the elite society of Rome. Flower traces the functional evolution of ancestor masks, from their first attested appearance in the third century BC to their last mention in the sixth century AD, through the examination of literary sources in both prose and verse, legal texts, epigraphy, archaeology, numismatics, and art. It is by putting these masks, which were worn by actors at the funerals of the deceased, into their legal, social, and political context that Flower is able to elucidate their central position in the media of the time and their special meaning as symbols of power and prestige.

    Book Description

Volume 3 in the best-selling series of the comic widely considered to be the greatest example of the comic strip artform, in an elegant book designed by best-selling Jimmy Corrigan author Chris Ware.

This volume is the third in a long-term plan to chronologically reprint the entirety of the 28-year run of Krazy Kat's breathtaking Sunday page, most of which has not seen print since originally running in newspapers 75 years ago. Each volume is painstakingly edited by the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum's Bill Blackbeard, the world's foremost authority on early 20th Century American comic strips, and designed by Jimmy Corrigan author Chris Ware, who may well go down as the best cartoonist of the 21st Century.

In addition to the 104 full-page black-and-white Sunday strips from 1929 and 1930 (Herriman did not use color until 1935), the book includes an introduction by Blackbeard and reproductions of rare Herriman ephemera from Ware's own extensive collection, as well as annotations and other notes by Ware and Blackbeard. Of special note to collectors, this is the period when Herriman was again liberated from the "grid" constraints of the mid-'20s and was able to compose his pages far more creatively, resulting in richer, more complex, more eye-pleasing compositions.

Krazy Kat is a love story, focusing on the relationships of its three main characters. Krazy Kat adored Ignatz Mouse. Ignatz Mouse just tolerated Krazy Kat, except for recurrent onsets of targeting tumescence, which found expression in the fast delivery of bricks to Krazy's cranium. Offisa Pup loved Krazy and sought to protect "her" (Herriman always maintained that Krazy was gender-less) by throwing Ignatz in jail. Each of the characters was ignorant of the others' true motivations, and this simple structure allowed Herriman to build entire worlds of meaning into the actions, building thematic depth and sweeping his readers up by the looping verbal rhythms of Krazy & Co.'s unique dialogue. 120 pages b/w illustrations.

Krazy and Ignatz are always fun to read. Herriman's artistic and literary genius shine through. If a person has never read a Krazy Kat compilation, this one is a great one to begin the journey to Cococino County.

    5 out of 5 stars Habit Forming!.......2005-06-19

This title was my first book of Krazy and Ignatz.I discovered them while researching early newspaper comic strips.I can't add anything new to the praise George Herriman has recieved, but I can tell you I have ordered the other books.I'm hooked!

5 out of 5 stars "Oh well, I'll inspire myself with anudda inspiration".......2003-07-19

I've said this before and I'll say it again - Krazy Kat is simply one of the best comics ever produced. It completely smashes the western stereotype that comics are merely "for kids" and are supposed to be predictable, cute, and shallow.

Krazy Kat is not necessarily for kids. Your kids probably won't get it (and if they do, put them in an honors class immediately), though they may find pleasure in the slapstick elements. The strip is based on a bizarre love triangle between a "Kat" (Krazy, whose gender is indeterminate), a mouse (Ignatz)and a dog(Offisa Pupp). The Kat loves the mouse who hates the Kat who is hated by the dog who loves the Kat. I'm sure that was crystal clear. There are many ways to interpret this triumvirate, but I like to think it's about longing or futile and innocent longing and the inevitable obstacles that keep life from being perfect. The only way Ignatz acknowledges Krazy's existence is by throwing bricks at his/her head. Krazy has rationalized this into an act of love, and so pines away for Ignatz to toss a brick at him/herself. Offisa Pupp wants nothing more than to catch Ignatz in the act, and so the battle of good and evil begins with innocence trapped in the middle somewhere. An act of love then negates another perceived act of love. The strip is easier to experience than it is to explain (as you've probably just noticed).

This is yet another GREAT release from Fantagraphics. The graphic design on the cover and throughout is wonderful, and there are interesting and amusing "bonus materials" inside.

One of the "bonus" articles talks about the change in American humor away from slapstick and surreal humor towards more of a post-vaudeville early Bob Hope style of comedy. It was during these years of transition that Krazy Kat fell out of favor with the public at large, but William Randolph Hearst (yes, "Citizen Kane") loved the strip and demanded that it stay in the papers. His editors pleaded with him to cut it, but Hearst stood by the strip (Herriman also had a lifetime contract with Hearst, according to the article). The article goes into detail on these issues. It is a very good read.

Also, in the back of this installment is a reprint of the actual sheet music for the "Krazy Kat Rag" published in 1911, before Krazy had his/her own strip.

And of course there's plenty of classic full page strips. But be warned! There are no pages missing - many Krazy Kat strips were reprinted on particular dates, and in 1929 the first non-repeated Sunday strip appeared on Februray 10th. This is explained in the back of the volume on the "Ignatz Mouse Debaffler pages" along with some late 1920s anachronisms. So when you turn to the 1st strip in the book, the date will say "February 10th" which is fine. I admit I panicked at first until I consulted the all-knowing debaffler page.

Overall another great addition to the ever growing available collection of Krazy Kat in print. May Fantagraphics continue in pleasing the Krazy Kat freaks (like myself) until every Krazy Kat strip possible has been reprinted. A ba-jillion thanks!

    Book Description

A lively history from 1000 B.C. to Broadway.

Drone On! is a humorous spin on the history, mystery, magic, mythology, musicians, musical instruments and multiculturalism of Celtic music.

The book covers the influence of the Celts on classical composers, country crooners, film soundtracks, today's explosive shamrock 'n' roll as well as the phenomenon of the global touring shows Riverdance and Lord of the Dance.

Undoubtedly Irish/Scottish cultures have shaped the music of North America, from Newfoundland to Nashville, and continue to inspire musicians everywhere, with rhythm and repertoire. From the Celts' first piping-and-plundering over 3,000 years ago, to some twenty-first century triumphs, this music still delights.

Like poet Arthur O'Shaughnessy (1844-1881), the author sees the Celts as music-makers, dreamers of dreams and "the movers and shakers, of the world forever, it seems." Never before has Celtic music and all its complexity been treated with such loving irreverence. Drone On! is bouncy enough to be read in one go -- while each chapter can be savored for its light-hearted lore.

This lady could have droned on forever, without losing my interest. The production values of the book suck (YOU try reading the back cover) but the book itself rocks. Despite the fact that she swings back and forth between centuries and millenia like some celtic whirling dirvish (mix of metaphors?), I've never read a more riveting history book in my life - or music book. Neither have I written a review online about a book before, and wouldn't bother if this one wasn't so outstanding.

      Book Description

The guns, the girls, the gadgets, all the key ingredients of Bond --James Bond -- are captured in this one-of-a-kind collection of movie posters. Gathered from the archives of Eon Productions and published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Bond movies and the release of the newest James Bond movie, James Bond Movie Posters depicts in hot type and bold color four decades of our favorite spy in action. Film-goers first encountered the trademark gun barrel logo on the poster for Dr. No, produced in 1962 to promote the first official Bond movie. Then followed the famous image of Bond with a gun across his chest on the poster for From Russia with Love, Goldfinger's startling golden girl, and the inimitable Pussy Galore. These images have become some of the most memorable visual teasers in cinematic history and are now one of the hottest items of memorabilia among both Bond aficionados and movie collectors. This collection features over 200 original posters, including posters that were never released, limited edition festival posters, and rare advance posters. They are all meticulously reproduced in this oversized, full-color paperback. "James Bond is back in action! Everything he touches turns to excitement!"

      This updated edition includes:
      - Poster artwork from the latest James Bond movie, Die Another Day
      - Extended introduction on the evolving imagery and influence of James Bond posters

I bought this book as a present for the huge James Bond fan in my life and it was perfect. He really enjoyed looking at all of the classic posters from the various movies. If you have someone who really is a Bond fanatic, this is the way to go!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth it!.......2007-02-12

I bought this for my husband's birthday, he's a HUGE Bond fan...he was really excited about this book, and i was impressed with the large format and the posters from around the world for the different Bond films. Definitely worth buying, even as a book to leave on the coffee table for people to flip through.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection of James Bond Movie Posters.......2006-12-01

This is a wonderful collection of James Bond Movie Posters. The illustrations and quality of the images are outstanding. They are crisp and sharp and very colorful. This book covers Bond posters from all over the world. The composition of the Japanese posters are quite eye catching and innovative. This is a wonderful and essential book for James Bond enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars How times have changed...........2006-11-22

I am echoing another reviewer in lamenting the sorry state of movie posters in 2006. The Octopussy campaign from 1983 was simply stunning as the myriad posters in this volume show at least 3-4 different pieces of artwork, each one beautifully painted and in keeping with the Indian theme. The use of Octopussy herself as a Hindu goddess behind Bond was brilliant.

Compare that to the current ad campaign for Casino Royale -- which is virtually indistinguishable from a Gucci billboard. It says nothing about the film, its minimalism ill-conceived and simply lazy. Worse still was the "Die Another Day" poster which was quite simply four layerrs in Photoshop: Pierce and Halle, a background, and the type layer. Moreover a simple type-treatment for the title, nothing like the individualized logotype for a film such as Octopussy. I could go on... This is a gorgeous book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent chronical of James Bond movie posters.......2005-08-27

I just received this fantastic James Bond poster collection book and I have to say, this is indispensable stuff, going all the way from Dr NO to Die Another Day, and even including oddities like Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again. Author Tony Nourmand has clearly put a great amount of effort and research into the making of this book, and it shows. Beautifully presented, this has quickly turned out to be one of my preferred movie books. Showcasing classic posters from some of the leading graphic artists of the 1970s and 80s like Robert McGinnis (Live and Let Die and The Man with The Golden Gun are amazing), Bob Peak (Moonraker), Frank McCarthy, Renato Casaro and Randi Braun, their collective works culminate in a lavishly presented masterwork that looks fantastic. Footnotes on subtle changes that were made to some late 70s movie posters are particularly welcome, as are the informative and interesting introductions that accompany the film-based chapters. The Sean Connery films for instance, comprise extensive thoughts from Nourmand talking about discarded poster ideas and how the change of leading man from Connery to George Lazenby caused some marketing concerns. It's not difficult to see why some of the early posters like From Russia With Love are sought after by collectors, these highly prized masterpieces are worth thousands by today's market. Being a poster collector myself, I've found that this is a particularly lucrative hobby. Theses are not just your average, run of the mill images, these are works of art that look beautiful on the wall. Poster layouts for the Roger Moore era are the most elaborate, indicating the change in times, Britain and America's quickly changing tastes, and the myriad of factors that are involved in this particular art. Foreign posters from Japan and Spain display the differential takes on how these particular films should be marketed, and the changes that were made by more conservative global regions to the more sexually suggestive artwork. Reading it, one notices the gradual change from traditional watercolor artwork to photo mosaics and stylish computer-aided photography. Which is, arguably less impressive, but mostly, the posters for the new Pierce Brosnan films do carry on the subtle nuances and certain recognizable M.O that is so popular. This is must-have material for 007 fans and poster fans alike and inspiration for aspiring artists in the field of movies.

        Book Description

Supervision of Art Psychotherapy will be an inspiration for advanced practitioners and students in training. It is the first book to formulate a unique theoretical base to current practice in art psychotherapy supervision. A central theme is the nature of the image in supervision, defining its difference from other forms of supervision in the mental health professions. Clinical practice is brought to life through vivid vignettes from diverse settings with a variety of client groups.

A vital contribution to the literature in the context of Continuing Professional Development, this volume establishes the image as central in the supervision of art psychotherapists. It brings the experience of the artist in the psychotherapist into the frame, provoking questions about the meaning of images and image making in supervision.

This guide seems to be written primarily by Robert Cowden and opens appropriately with a quote from Machiavelli. Examples (both real and fictional), of administrative and evaluative practices from the Department of Music at Indiana State University (Terre Haute, Indiana) are given. An overview of other music department's procedures is lacking.

Tired of listening to all your friends and coworkers talk about how much fun they have playing Texas Hold'Em. I was, but not knowing how to play kept me from going to any games. I saw this book on line and decided to give it a try. The book was great !!! Very easy to read and gave me all the basic rules and strategies. I went to my first game last weekend and came in second place !!!! Now I can't wait to play again. Don't miss out on the fun.

This book is terrific for newcomers to the Texas Hold 'em scene. Everything you need is right here in an easy to follow layout. The book is designed for both the novice and the more experienced player. I found that once I had read the book I could easily go back and find the section that I was interested in. The strategy sections are particularly helpful. I found the advice on when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em especially good.

                      Book Description

In this visionary book, C. K. Prahalad and Venkat Ramaswamy explore why, despite unbounded opportunities for innovation, companies still can't satisfy customers and sustain profitable growth. The explanation for this apparent paradox lies in recognizing the structural changes brought about by the convergence of industries and technologies; ubiquitous connectivity and globalization; and, as a consequence, the evolving role of the consumer from passive recipient to active co-creator of value. Managers need a new framework for value creation. This book is about the emerging "next practices" in value creation.

Increasingly, individual customers interact with a network of firms and consumer communities to co-create value. No longer can firms autonomously create value. Neither is value embedded in products and services per se. Products are but an artifact around which compelling individual experiences are created. As a result, the focus of innovation will shift from products and services to experience environments that individuals can interact with to co-construct their own experiences. These personalized co-creation experiences are the source of unique value for consumers and companies alike.

In this emerging opportunity space, companies must build new strategic capital-a new theory on how to compete. This book presents a detailed view of the new functional, organizational, infrastructure, and governance capabilities that will be required for competing on experiences and co-creating unique value. This is the future of competition.

5 out of 5 stars Future of marketing..........2006-06-19

Caveat - I see most things from a marketer's prospective, hence, I read this book in that context. I think the ideas of Prahalad and Ramaswamy are the future of marketing. If you take a look at a few of today's successful companies, including Amazon.com and eBay for instance, you will see that one of the reasons they have been so successful is because they worked with their customers. I think the book should be required reading for anyone going into the marketing field.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing insightful that is worth the onerous read.......2005-06-22

The authors have created a massive text that does not add much to the earlier paper they had published. The book has mainly two messages - maximizing customer experience is the basis of value creation and firms have to be experience-driven rather than product-centric. (BTW, these are the author's buzz words not mine ).

They cite cases that have no hard links to their messages but a tenous connection. There is no proof or metrics to show that this is the way to go.

I am sure the academics have the luxury of writing long books to sustain their tenureship compared to us real-world practioners, where things have to work now or in the next quarter for us to go anywhere in the corporate world. Sorry, academics.

5 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Thinking for higher IQ managers.......2005-04-23

The concepts presented in the book are deceptively easy to gloss over. I do not blame the reviewers at this site who did not 'get it'.

This is not something one can expect to read and understand over a coast-to-coast flight like most of the popular business books one tends to find at the airport book stores.

It is heavily intellectual content and for those who do 'get it', the payoffs can be huge, as have been documented by the real-life examples presented in the book. There are no quick fixes here and no 'if you have problem A, do X' type remedies, nor the 'company A did X and it worked for them' type anecdotal evidence.

Real-life examples have been used to demonstrate the backbone of the theory. This is necessary because there is no evidence of the concept of co-creation present yet in the collective *consciousness* of the managers today (it does happen accidentally, though).

Now you must be wondering how I can be so emphatic about stating my opinion. Well, I have had the fantastic opportunity to do some work on this subject during my MBA program through the B-school class offered by one of the authors at Ross Business School, as well as the opportunity of doing independent research on the subject matter of this book.

I can assure the prospective reader that the material requires serious mental exercise, and the theory and frameworks are not easy to grasp or implement. The reason for this is that the implementation of the concepts being presented requires some serious inside-out redesign of the organization, processes, systems as well as value appropriation contracts..

However, for those interested in finding out about which direction to look to innovate, especially the entrepreneurial types, this is an excellent opportunity to learn something new and apply it to the extent your own organizational processes, systems and capabilities will allow, or create ground-up organizations, processes, systems and capabilities to take advantage of the opportunities to the fullest.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-08-01

C.K. Prahalad must be getting a bit long in the tooth. Or perhaps he has had difficulty in recent years finding a co-author as talented as Gary Hamel. Whatever his excuse, his latest book is a disappointing throwback to specious management bestsellers of the 80s and 90s. Prahalad's book is long on clichés and short on insight. The central thesis of the book is a rehash of Kotler's better articulted work on the prosumer. Given all of their emphasis on "value co-creation" the book seems woefully short on profitability and ROI numbers. I couldn't find any case studies that showed the value in value co-creation. At the same time, truly innovative and competitive "value co-creation" businesses - Linux, Apache and the whole open source software movement which Microsoft now finds so threatening - are barely mentioned. Are we just to take the authors' word for it that companies adopting a "C-type" structure are automatically profitable? Hmm. Maybe it depends on whether these firms adopt "X,Y, or Z-type" management. Can lucrative consulting gigs be far behind?

5 out of 5 stars must read for 21st century human.......2004-07-15

Alvin Toffler has indicated customization is future trend. He is(was) right.

The future of competition shows what, why, and how ( sometimes, who) about the future of product and service. What a corporation must do in order to integrate cusomter's experience into their production process and how to organize the company in order to do it. A must read book for 21st century human, why? because any interaction is an experience and if you extend the metaphor of product, any interaction is a 'product'. If you have been of good reputation, you will 'sell' well on whaterver you say or do. Because people 'buy' it.
