A first rate introduction to the Creature for young movie monster fans.......2005-08-28
When it comes to rubber suited monsters I still hold that the Creature from the Black Lagoon is the best of the bunch, and while the name of Bud Westmore is not as well known for putting together the creature's look as well as Jack Pierce is remembered for doing the makeup for Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein Monster, he should be. This is the second volume in the Famous Movie Monsters series I have read, so I know that in the first chapter of "Meet the Creature from the Black Lagoon" that Brent Peterson is going to recap the 1954 film that launched the reptile man-creature as a monster icon. The synopsis is accompanied by publicity photographs from the film, that starred Richard Carlson, Richard Denning and White Bissell as the doctors, and Julia Adams as Kay, the young woman that the creature falls for. The recap is well written and I liked Peterson's point that a "knife is a persuasive argument." Of course, it does not substitute for actually seeing the film, so hopefully young readers will pick up this book after they have seen the actual Universal film.
The second chapter talks about how the scaly, clawed "gill-man" who would eventually become known simply as the Creature was created during a decade that was famous for monster movies. Peterson explains how the Creature's costume was created by Westmore and also looks at the problems faced by cinematographer Charles S. Welbourne because not only did much of action take place underwater but because the movie was originally filmed in 3-D as well (yes, I have had the opportunity to see the 3-D version in a movie theater, where I learned I prefer the special glasses under my regular ones rather than over). Peterson also gets into the trouble they had finding actors to play the creature, with Olympic swimmer Ricou Browning getting the job in the water and actor Ben Chapman doing the duty on land. I also liked the point that the Creature made a big impact because he was the same size as humans and not a towering monster like Godzilla or the others created by atomic mutation.
After talking about how America fell in love with the Creature after the movie debuted, the third chapter provides a brief look at the national love affair with monsters, not only in movies like "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms," but also the stories of the Loch Ness Monster. The final chapter begins with Peterson provocatively asking his young readers who is the real hero and who is the real monster in "Creature from the Black Lagoon"? This is where he covers both of the sequels, 1955's "Revenge of the Creature," and 1956's "The Creature Walks Among Us," as well as noting that the Creature has remained the one classic movie monster who has never been remade. Peterson also underscores the idea that the Creature was not a bloodthirsty beast but just a phenomenon of nature that wanted to be left in peace only to have human beings show up and invade its space.
The three Creature features are listed in the book's Filmography, there is a Glossary of terms from "Academy Award" to "synonymous," along with places to go For More Information from web sites and books. The result is a solid introduction to the Creature, which will have to suffice because there are simply not the same collection of books devoted to him as there are to his colleagues for readers, young or old, to seek out to find out more. The Famous Movie Monsters series certainly covers the basics. In terms of the other classic Universal monsters you have Frankenstein (the monster and not the mad scientist), Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy. Then you have the other biggies, namely King Kong, Godzilla, and the Blob. So we are basically talking about black & white monster movies from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.
Creature book is spooky good.......2005-03-23
My oldest son has been interested in the Creature for a while. He thinks its all kind of funny, actually. I got him this book and he loved it. The pictures of the Creature alone are worth it, but my son enjoys reading about the movie and how it was made. I must admit, I like it, too. Good fun.

Not that special..........2005-11-18
i wasn't very impressed. i bought the book for an airplane ride and was very disappointed to find how often the author wrote (these are examples) "you can find great ones online" or "skin care tips online" or "list of top best photogs worldwide online." i didn't have a computer and i wanted to know what they were talking about. if you don't have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you. EVEN if you have access to a computer 24/7 this book is not for you cause than you CAN look it all up.
Model & Talent 2001.......2002-06-18

Runway, Runway, Runway.......2001-08-28
This book concentrates both in text and photographs, on runway modeling. Generally, runway models (outside small towns) are models who have already 'made it' in print modeling (editorial and advertising). This book is sorely lacking in the fundamentals of modeling -- like finding out where you fit and where your potential lies.
Your Modeling Career.......2000-05-15
Because I am in New york I have a lot of chances to get into the modeling world. Finally I have a good guide to help me get started. I especially love the runway photos which are exciting and very well done. This is a great book.
I Really Recommend this book. Excellent!.......2000-04-11
For someone who lives in a country outside the United States,it is a good thing to find a book like this one which emphasizes theuse of the Internet to find out about the modeling business. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about becoming a model but does not know where to start. There is so much info in it, that having used only a tenth of it, and I'm already happy with my investment.

Older but still relevant.......2001-11-24
This book is really good and includes a lot of information and pictures. It doesn't talk to much about how to obtain a model permit and taxes etc. but does really give a good perspective from a child/parents point of view.

Very Effective.......2006-10-02
Definitely get this book. It's very helpful, written in a beautifully conversational style, with lots of hints and tips from those in the industry. Also, incredibly practical and doesn't waste any time emphasizing that there's a big difference between just being an excellent writer and being a million-dollar screenwriter. Straight to the point, no glossing over the realities of the industry. I definitely enjoyed it.
Don't waste your time. Spend you cash wisely elsewhere........2006-06-28
The book feels as if it was written by someone out of touch. Most of the book is vague, bland, generalized statements. Someone should do a word count on how many times Woodbury uses the word "imagination." A good tip off that the book is not very good is the fact that there are no peer reviews on the back cover, or front pages. There are some decent quotes from highly successful screenplay writers. But, too few. A better reco for a book like that would be 101 Habits of Highly Successful Screenwriters. I've read a lot of books in this category, and I am noticing a trend. The good ones are written by people active in the industry. Not the professors from NYC or Emerson.
Good book for learning how to be Motivated to write!.......2005-09-14
I enjoyed this wholesome book, a very good book for beginning screenplay writers. Each chapter has something interesting to say especially from famous screenplay writers and their point-of-view. Interesting perspective from an NYU screenplay writer professor!
A very cool read!.......2004-02-15
The conversational and entertaining tone of the interviews make you feel like you're sitting in a bar having drinks with these guys.
Practical Tips for Struggling Screenwriters.......2004-02-13
I enjoyed reading Cool Million. It's given me practical tips on how to write my own screenplay. At the moment I'm working on the screenplay based on my novel Different Flags, and Cool Million is helping me move forward with my project. I would love to see my well-reviewed novel on the big screen and Cool Million has given me the courage to pursue this goal. The book has advice from professional screenwriters and it even tells how to approach actors and directors who might be interested in my screenplay once it's finished. I recommend it.

Book Description
The Poetic Repercussion" returns Mark Anthony Thomas to his literary roots with the follow-up to his first book, "As I Look." Soul-stirring and adventurous, this poetic and lyrical triumph narrates through the fundamental and elemental areas of culture- venturing through nature, love, politics, philosophy, athletics, education, spirituality, hip hop, racism, war, and a multitude of interlinking themes.
Inspiring and entertaining, "Repercussion" blends traditional and cross-cultural literary styles with contemporary works of poetry, prose, spoken word, and music.
Metaphorically set in a "Psychiatrist's Chair," Thomas shares candid, personal, and fictional tales and songs through 101 "tracks" and 20 "interludes." The energy and depth of one of America's young prominent voices has never been more evident.

The Future.......2006-08-25
Mark is the future of spoken word poetry. He redefines and transcends what had become very commercial and watered down.
Words that penetrate deeply into your very being. Saw you at the Essence Festival. Keep doing your thing! Much Success!
A Wonderful collection.......2005-10-21
This collection tells stories that are alive with music. A blend of Poetry, Prose and Spoken Word fused with a Jazz tune, a Blues note or a Hip Hop beat.
These confessions from a psychiatrist chair left me wanting more. Left me longing for the live performance I could feel through the pages. Thomas packs a big punch with this collection. 101 poems that take you on a journey and cover a lot of ground.

For Real poetry lovers.......2005-05-16
Poetry is so strangely personal; however, once in a while a poet manages to reach the world with words everyone can relate to. Mark Anthony Thomas manages to do this is in his book of poetry The Poetic Repercussion.
As I read this book different poems waved to me with something to say. "The Rib Around My Neck" is a man's plea/prayer for a good woman. (Little did he know that she would be writing this review.) "Funny that Way" shows societal ironies and "I TOO (AFRAID I AM)" is reminiscent of Langston Hughes' "Mother to Son." His poetry covers the gamut from culture to politics, spirituality (the poems have a scripture reference), education, racism and war, etc. Brotha man has 101 poems deep!
I must say that this poetry is not for beginners. Some are meant to be read aloud and would work better in a performance venue while others are extremely introspective which alludes to my opening remarks.
If you have the heart of a poet or wish you did, pick this up.

Heralded as a literary artist since his teenage years, Mark Anthony
Thomas has amassed a list of credits to accompany his name. THE
POETIC REPERCUSSION, his second book of poetry, returns him to his
literary roots. When I attempt to describe this work, terms like
lyrical, rhythmic, controversial and triumphant come to mind.
Mark uses his poetic voice to narrate through the gamut of social
issues which envelops life like an enemy's flank. He leaves no
issue unturned as he artfully blends traditional and cross-cultural
literary styles with the contemporary styles of prose, spoken word,
and music.
Were I to choose just one poem from this melting pot of thought
provoking poetry that captures the essence of where life takes us,
it would be the opening title `Psychiatrist's Chair'. With this poem,
he eloquently guides readers through a narrow path of pitfalls that
could very well lead to insanity. THE POETIC REPERCUSSIONS will take
you there, it resonates between the pages and the beat is hynoptic.

good intro to paper scale modeling.......2001-10-30
I am an avid fan of paper airplane models. I especially like making scale models of real aircraft. After having made all sorts I found this book really nice because of the little history on each plane that the book gives. Though it would have been really good if the models were 3-D and if the plans for the models were pre-cut or perforated on the margins.
The models take you through the early years of flight to the modern era and there are ample copies of each in case you foul up on one.
All-in-all I think this is a great book for paper airplane fans like me and kids as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about purchasing it.

Less than entry-level book - too basic for anyone who already can use a phone.......2007-06-03
I was very dissapointed with this book - it features extremely basic information about customer service and phone skills. The books stresses that the phone should be answered quickly, politely and that the CSR should listen to the caller. They recommend taking complete messages, calling back promptly and trying to sound positive when saying "no".
I believe I learned all of that from my mom and dad when I was 8. It was not worth the $10.95, and I won't be buying any titles from this series or publisher again - it just isn't new or useful information.
Excellent communication skills tool!.......2004-07-27
I've been doing reception work for a long time and was recently promoted to because of my excellent phone and office skills. Not to brag, just to illustrate that I know something about customer service on the phone. I love reference material and I have purchased other books on the same subject. I read this book, nearly cover-to-cover (left out the sales calls chapter as it does not apply to me), and I found it interesting, informative, easy-to-read, and applicable to my work. Very useful tips on how to handle all kinds of situations. Written for anyone from the 20-year professional secretary/assistant to a total beginner. I would definitely choose this book over The Phone Book: Telephone Skills for Business Success Student Text by Fisher.
In short, professionally written, applicable to all kinds of situations, great for all levels of experience.

This book was absolutely what I have been looking for. It has assisted not only me, but the customers that I work with on a daily basis. Thanks for such great information and Rescue.
