5 out of 5 stars Funny, brutally honest horse cartoons.......1999-10-02

I've never seen any book like it... Very funny cartoons depicting horse life, but if you look closely, you see the author has captured precise movements and brilliant details. This is a small insight as to how the author was able to have interesting yet different successful careers. He was also AHSA Trainer of the Year (atleast once), and had a such positive effect on many people. -Alan Crofut

Book Description

There is an inexplicable magic about earrings, unmatched by any other kind of jewelry. Uniquely, they move with a life of their own, voluptuous yet pure, cold yet provocative. Earrings have been worn since prehistoric times; ancient civilizations offered earrings to their goddesses, and today they remain the most demanding and rewarding exercises of the jeweler's art. Daniela Mascetti and Amanda Triossi, both experts from Sotheby's, are themselves under the spell of earrings, and their erudition does not disguise that this book is as much a romance as a fine piece of art-historical research. The authors relate how the fashion of wearing precious earrings spread from ancient Egypt to the Classical Greek and Roman worlds to Byzantium. Techniques in the cutting of gemstones and diamonds, perfected in the eighteenth century, allowed earring design to evolve towards its most stylish and glamorous, and the book covers every period and style up to the present. The great names among designers and international jewelry houses--Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston, Bulgari--are represented in dazzling displays of precious and semi-precious earrings. Illustrations range from Rococo flowers and long, heavy girondoles thick with diamonds and emeralds to chaste Neoclassical disks and the delicate nodding sprays of the late nineteenth century. A wide-ranging study that will be a rich source of inspiration and delight for collectors, designers, and fashion lovers, this is a feast for the eye and a revelation of the wonders that artistry can create.

5 out of 5 stars A Focused Treasury of History of Design.......2007-01-07

As as jewelry designer, I am continuously researching the history of design. In building a library of references I have been very selective in my acquisitions for inspiration and research. This book is a wonderful history of design with exceptional photographs and bibliography. The section at the back with biographical annotations of designers of note is as precious, for me, as the photos and text of the book. I highly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2005-01-12

Beautiful book with very pretty pictures! I was very pleased when I received it and I highly recommend it to antique jewelry fans!

5 out of 5 stars A True Delight for Antique Jewelry Collectors.......2000-05-08

This book was recommended to me by my antique jewelry dealer. It is a treasure-trove of historical information with fabulous pictures and descriptions. Whether you are a collector or simply an admirer, you will not be disappointed in this well-researched book.

Well Bill, you have done it again. This is going to be big, really big. Have you ever wished you could learn more about the movie business? Well this is your chance to look behind the scenes with a slightly different view. Most people don't ever really see to many mistakes on the big screen or at home on TV but, that is just because they are not properly trained as to what to look for. I will say that after reading this book you will become a "Master Flim Flub Finder". I know that I have. Bill has once again produced a GREAT "G" rated book that you can take the whole family to read. Everytime you turn on a movie you will run to the book shelf to find out where the mistakes are in that movie. Thanks to Bill it is all wrapped up in a nice little package for you to enjoy. You will want more and that will be very easy because this is a "Sequel" to other "Film Flub" books that Bill has written. You will find that the information located in this book will keep you amused for years to come. This is the kind of "G" Rated material that we are all looking for. You will enjoy this book over and over again with you family and friends. Don't stop now Bill, there are new movies being released every year and that can only mean more mistakes to catch. I have rated this book at the highest rating of 5 even though I believe it to have a much higher rating. I have found some flubs that even Bill hasn't caught yet. Buy the book and find out for yourself how much fun you are missing. Bill, once again I say keep up the good work and don't stop. Thank You.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad that Bill put this information together........1999-02-10

I must have been one of the first people to own this book. I am now a follower of Bill's books. After reading this book I had to go back and watch all of those flicks that he talks about. I was amazed at what I had missed. This book will give you hours (no, days) of amusement. I have gone on to find may film flubs not yet published by Bill. You will learn so much from this book that you too will become a "Flub Master" as I have. This book is worth finding at any cost so that your Bill Givens set can be complete. You are not wasting any of you good hard earned money here. This is good "G" rated entertainment and sometimes thats hard to find anymore. I rated the book 5 stars for its content and its ability to make me think now everytime I watch a movie for things that I would never of thought of before. Bill Givens don't ever stop. To this very day I still refer back to this book when an old movie comes on that is profiled in this book. I have enjoyed this book not only with my whole family but also with my friends. Thank You.

4 out of 5 stars This is a "sequel" that almost tops the originals..........1997-07-11

You see them all the time. Or maybe you don't. Those with sharp eyes catch them. How an actor in a movie might be holding an object in one shot and it's not there in the next. How the "reality" of a film's time period can be proved invalid with anachronisms like watches and sneakers. These little slip-ups, called, in the business, continuity errors, happen in virtually every movie, and finding one can be a joy to a viewer. Especially if one has read any of the "Film Flubs" series by Bill Givens.

This series of books, which focuses on these curious little mistakes that happen in films, reaches new heights of hilarity with the third installment, "Film Flubs: The Sequel". I guarantee that once you've read these particular volumes, you'll find yourself searching for those same "little mistakes" yourself.

In the book, Givens, a writer for several magazines, takes us on a whirlwind tour of some of the biggest blunders captured on film in recent years. He doesn't shy away from attacking the big name directors, either. He has whole sections entitled "Picking on the Biggies" where he focuses on some of the biggest films of recent years: "Terminator 2," "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves," "Cape Fear," and more. Among the more memorable gaffes...

-In "Terminator 2," Linda Hamilton is heard stating that the human body has 215 bones. There are only 206.

-"Robin Hood"'s character of Azeem (Morgan Freeman) seems to be WAY ahead of his time in some of the contraptions he carries...a telescope, gunpowder, a Scimitar sword, all of which did not exist in the 12th century.

-In "The Rocketeer," set in the mid-1930's, German money is referred to a "Deutchmarks." Even then-Disney head Jeffery Katzenberg had to 'fess up to that one...German money back then was actually called the "rieschmark."

This is just a quick sample...there are many more for your enjoyment and amusement in "Film Flubs: The Sequel." And, as much as I enjoy this book, I also strongly urge you to pick up all of the other "Flubs" books...they contain even more wonderful gaffes from some of the top movies of all time.

But what is the main reason you should read "Film Flubs: The Sequel"? Take a close look at the section marked "The Sharp Eyed, Quick Witted, Film Flub Spotter Squad," where Givens lists the names of those people who contributed to the book. Yep, my name's in there! Let it never be said that I don't engage in shameless self-promotion now and again...

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a contender.......2007-02-26

How can you publish a book about movie flubs and include so few photos? "Roman soldiers" would have been a lot more fun if instead of telling us about the supposed mistakes in films, it showed us. If ever there was a need for a companion DVD, this book was it.

Aside from a few really interesting flubs, the book is actually quite repetitious. Scars and bloodstains appear and disappear or switch places. Bodies appear and disappear. But after a few dozen pages of this, I had had enough. I would have like to have heard from the film editors who use various techniques -- like film reversal -- that give rise to these flubs. It's not enough, for instance, to tell me that in a particular shot in the movie, "The Birds," that the attacking creatures cast no shadows. Why not? Were they included via double exposure? The book does not say.

Too, a number of the book's items were not flubs. In a James Bond film, a house appears to explode twice. Is this a flub, or a movie technique to allow the audience to experience the same event from multiple angles? And is it really a flub when a couple seems to switch sides while walking down the street -- or are we to assume that we are not witnessing every second of their perambulation? And is it a flub when a filmmaker deliberately includes material that he/she expects the moviegoer not to perceive?

That said, there were a few flubs that rose to the level of worthwhile -- the Invisible Man's footprints should have been barefoot, not shod. The book did include a few descriptions of near-flubs, in which directors repaired errors before they hit the theaters. The story of how Cecil B DeMille managed to have Jesus write in the sand while standing in a tiled Temple was ingenious and interesting. More stories along thse lines would have made the book worthwhile.

As a whole, the book was a disappointment and a bore. The flubs were mostly small and of interest only to the geekiest cineaste. A missed opportunity to expose the film-making process.

4 out of 5 stars Look! A Roman centurion is wearing a Casio!.......2004-06-08

Roman soldiers, as we all know, didn't wear watches at the height of the Caesars' power. Not because they couldn't afford even an inexpensive digital watch, mind you, but simply because the watch -- heck, even the mechanical clock -- hadn't yet been invented. Yet, as Bill Givens will cheerfully point out in his extremely amusing (and for some film producers, dismaying) collection of film flubs, some ancients were way ahead of themselves. Modern watches, wedding rings and other anachronisms make their little unexpected cameos in such set-in-ancient-times epics as The Ten Commandments, The Viking Queen, and Spartacus.

Givens' Roman Soldiers Don't Wear Watches: 333 Film Flubs -- Memorable Movie Mistakes is a compilation of continuity errors, slips of dialogue, film-flipping flaws, and other unexpected mistakes that often pop up during production. Some of them have been published in other volumes of his successful "Film Flubs" series, but quite a few are new.

Many moviegoers are by now familiar with some of the realities of filmmaking, such as the fact that films are shot out of sequence, that many "takes" of a scene are shot, and thousands of feet of film are cut and spliced together in an editing room. Much care is taken to make sure the movie's final cut tells the story properly and that the scenes have no distracting flubs, but quite often things do slip by, even in movies that are considered among the very best, including Casablanca, Star Wars, Dances With Wolves, Pretty Woman, and Scent of a Woman.

Not every gripe is about honest mistakes (such as Mark Hamill's calling Princess Leia "Carrie" near the end of A New Hope -- chalk that one up to overexcitement in the actor's part and a temporary lapse in the sound editor's) or silly anachronisms such as a wristwatch on a Roman soldier's wrist in 44 BC. Some are careless lapses in attention to detail, as in the Sound of Music when the Von Trapps are fleeing from Austria to escape the Nazis. Instead of heading toward Switzerland and freedom, they are driving north, straight toward Germany. Some are accidental "cameos" by crewmembers -- such as the guy with the handheld camera in 1989's The Fabulous Baker Boys, glimpsed as the brothers fight after a fake telethon. Others are even worse, such as setting a film's scene in one season while it is quite clearly another.

Although most of the entries in this book are short -- often introduced with bon mots such as "How's That Again, Sam?" and "Is a Bird Bath the Fountain of Youth?" -- Givens does scrutinize big crowd pleasers (Apollo 13, Terminator II, Jurassic Park) in chapters with the heading Picking on the Biggies. Here Givens has great fun pointing out flubs (such as wrong markings on the Saturn V rocket in Apollo 13, wrong dates and even the premature existence of USA Today in Forrest Gump, and just about everything in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: The Prince of Thieves) in some really big moneymakers and/or critical darlings.

Some of the strangest flubs, such as the switch in direction of the "blood" on young Indy's chin in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade or attacking birds without shadows in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, are shown in black and white photos.

Givens, who is an entertainment reporter and TV writer, clearly has a love for the movies in general, so none of this is written with any mean-spiritedness or malice. Like Damien Boma in Starring John Wayne as Genghis Khan, his approach is lighthearted and funny while at the same time being factual. His intended audience is not, of course, the Hollywood insider or the technical expert. Rather it is for the average filmgoer who loves the medium, yet spots such bizarre little things as California license plates in a movie that's set in Illinois (1978's Halloween) or a crewmember's hairy arm where none should be (Butterfield 8).

    5 out of 5 stars must have.......2003-07-09

this is a must have for anyone that loves movies, it's fun to try and find some of the mistakes they talk about in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Work it Bill.......1999-02-10

I must say that Bill has got what it takes. Even a musician puts out a greatest hit now and then. But Bill has added some new songs to his "Greatest Hits Book". I have enjoyed every page of this book. Bill has once again stayed in the realm of my standards as to a GREAT "G" rated book. I even enjoyed looking back at the past as Bill has taken the best and put it all together for his new readers out there. Encluding much new findings, this book is surely one to own. If you are in to finding out little know facts about your favorite movies that most people are never aware of then this is it. You will never waste a dime of your hard earned money on this book. You will get much more entertainment for the dollar here than if you had gone to the movies tonight and bought everybodies popcorn. Once again Bill Givens has done it again and I will always be first in line for any new books he releases. You to will become an addict to Bill's books after reading this one. Bill, I have given your book the highest 5 star rating but we both know that it is an 11 on the scale. This is GREAT "G" rated reading that will keep you amused not for days, weeks, but for years. If you don't believe me then buy this book and find out for yourself. I promise you will thank me later. Bill, please keep up the good work. Thank You.

If you have read any other works by Bill Givens, then there probably isn't much to say here. Son of Film Flubs is surely set to be a classic. After reading this book I was amazed at just how many mistakes there are in films out there. If you think that after you read this book you can simply put it on the shelf, you are grossly mistaken. This book will be a point of reference for you for many years to come. This is surely a hand-me-down for the kids. As long as there are movies there will be a need for this book and others like it. You will learn much as to how you will ever view another movie again. This is "GREAT" entertainment for the kids, family, and all of your friends. You will find this book to be very informative. I have rated this book with the highest 5 star rating due to my placing this book under a "G" rating and would have no problem reading this book with my kids. This is not just a book, it's an adventure in human life and our desires to be the best. It's kind of hard however to hide your mistakes with Bill around. Bill, keep up the good work. Thank You and don't ever stop.

This book is pretty good- the games are divided into categories, Team Building Games, Bible Learning Games, and Energy Burning Games. To be honest, I like the Ideas Library (Youth Specialties) books better. The games are organized better, more creative, easier to understand and do, and more categories.

Focal Point is author and motivational speaker Brian Tracy's latest guide to professional and personal development. Combining the basic principles of career success and life balance he has advocated in the past with anecdotes for inspiration, the book proposes a unified approach to simultaneously achieving improvement at work and at home. The crux is finding the "focal point" in all pertinent areas--business, family, finances, health--and then launching a seven-step "personal strategic plan" that "helps you identify exactly what is most important to you ... identify what you need to do to achieve your most important goals (and) determine the steps you have to take to get from wherever you are to wherever you want to go." Tracy shows quite explicitly how to incorporate the specific phases of the process, including Values, Vision, Goals, Knowledge and Skills, Habits, Daily Activities, and Actions, into a drive for long-term growth and overall advancement. Not all who follow Tracy's program will find their incomes doubled and work hours pared while their personal relationships blossom, of course, but anyone who applies it diligently should see definite improvement. --Howard Rothman

1 out of 5 stars Tracy's SLAM strategy is selfish.......2007-07-27

Say I get married and afterwards my wife develops a debilitating disease. If I had known what I know now, I wouldn't have gotten married to her. Tracy's advice: dump her as fast as you can.

Say I agree to help my friend move. When I arrive at his place I find out that he's a packrat and has tons of stuff to move. If I had known what I know now, I wouldn't have agreed to help him move. Tracy's advice: get out of your commitment to help as fast as you can.

In both these cases, there is no regard for commitments you have made to other people.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational book on staying focused and achieving Success!.......2007-05-01

As a longtime student of Brian Tracy's profound knowledge, I finally stumbled across this book while searching for Brian Tracy books, and have eagerly read it, page by page.

Closely following the superb content found in his must-get "Double Your Productivity" DVD, this is a superb guide to staying focused on high-value activities.

I am very grateful to Brian Tracy, and credit him with much of my entrepreneurial success (over 34,000 customers so far from my businesses, and growing!). A prolific, profoundly wise and imminently practical man, Brian Tracy is, as I told him in person at a recent Denver seminar, the "best business success coach ever". And he is. And then some.

"Focal Point" does a sensational job of driving home those points that everyone needs to be successful. By identifying and concentrating your energy on highest-value tasks and priorities. And, powerfully, by identifying in his words the costs of wasting time on less important, less urgent tasks. Creating mental consequences for developing a successful mindset, through all his words.

I had a pen out and scribbled all throughout this book, underlining key words here and there, taking notes in the cover of the book, and more.

I've studied "time management" and personal productivity for decades. Been to dozens of corporate seminars.

This book blows 'em all away. I eagerly devour (and have applied) Brian Tracy's knowledge and words, his values and mindset for success, to create an entrepreneurial empire, and Brian's the "go to" guy for much of that success.

Highly recommended; I've bought all of Brian's books and this is by far (along with Advanced Selling) one of his top 3-4 to date.

Buy this book and profit. The more I study Brian Tracy, and use what he teaches me, the more money I make, the more people's lives I touch with my companies, and the more successful I am. And so can you!

Thanks, Brian - this one's very important, and valued.

2 out of 5 stars Close, But No Cigar.......2006-09-08

When I read this book originally, I was very impressed with it. However, after reading "The Goal" by Eliyahu Goldratt, I realized my mistake. What if the idea that 20% of causes control 80% of effect is incorrect? What if only 1% of causes controls 99% of the effect? "Focal Point" seems to always assume the 20% part.

Secondly, I found that the author is very unclear about how to get one to formulate what one really wants. What exactly is the problem with the way you do things now? He seems to have the same solution for all aspects of your life. However, what if you are solving the wrong problem? Instead, if you use the theory of constraints (invented by Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt) and the tools based on that, I think that you will be impressed with how well it manages to focus your mind on what you want. It allows you to discover the problem that you really need to solve in order to see the improvements you desire. I see the results myself.

Also, "Focal Point" does seem to at least pay lip service to prioritization. However, by basically telling you that you should fundamentally do very similar things for all areas of your life, the book totally destroys the concept of prioritization. If you try to be good at everything, you will be good at nothing.

Another thing I dislike about the book is this. The way I read it is that it tells you to come up with a plan for this or a plan for that, but says nothing about how to actually do so. It says nothing about how to prepare for the great likelihood that something will go seriously wrong with your plan. Never mind the fact that you may not even know what the actual problem is that you need to solve to see some measurable improvement. In short, I do not see at all how it addresses the question of how to convert wishful thinking into a robust solution.

5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in schools.......2006-04-11

Okay I'll be the first to admit that I'm a great admirer of Brian Tracy's work. As a workshop facilitator and personal development coach I've utilized Brian's techniques and strategies on many an occasion. Focal Point has added a new dimension to what I can offer my students.

I've read it twice now and know that I'll be using it as a reference book for years to come. I recommend that you buy it for yourself and buy a copy for anyone you know who needs to get focused.

        5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2005-09-22

This is an excellent book. I have read a lot of motivational books recently, 8th habit, 10 rules of success etc. What is really required is an up-to-date book that can be easily applied and this really fits the bill.
I think to get the maximum out of this book you need to apply the principles and really focus on certain key elements, every single page has nuggets of wisdom that are much deeper than they seem, coming back to the book a year after reading its almost like reading it for the first time.
I'm going to give you two examples from a random page, in this case page14. "In the focal point process you identify the few things you can do that are more valuable... you then discipline yourself to focus all your energy... on those specific tasks". Another deep one "Whatever you concentrate on grows" wow good stuff eh.

Now I am going to give you two examples of how this month I have implemented from the book.
Spanish - in the past I have bought, books and tapes and still only know a few words. Now with the focal point method I realized I needed CDs so I could learn in the car. Now in some of my business emails with Latin America I include some Spanish phrases, my customers appreciate them and send a few new ones (with translations) back in their emails. Suffice it to say I know 5 times more in one week than I ever did over the years I've tried to learn Spanish.

The next example is organization, I have known for years that I needed to be more oraginsed, I bought an organizer last week (Day runner system), now I have my to do list and schedule on my computer. I have fun trying to do things in a more organized way using my new system. I have focused on what I want, to be better organized, its extremely values and can change one's life, my concentration on this issue has lead to great personal results and extends to my direct reports as I am getting them to organize better.

All in all a great buy for under $30 and a life changing book. In fact if I had to buy 2 self help books this year this would be one of them. Lastly its interesting that Covey talks about the new knowledge or information age worker (& therefore the need for the 8th habit) and this new type of worker is also mentioned by Tracey in this book. Great minds think alike?
