Should be called Ain"t it Stupid........2006-03-12

Just look at the web-site and then try reading this book and you will see that the man is just plain stupid and his web-site publishes on the web lies and false information about anything in the media.

The guy is full of himself and yet he can not write one line of simple English. Even his co-writers seem clueless on what to say.

The sad part is now, there are millions of so-called entertainment web-sites online now that all write and put online misleading and false news which is about as reliable as the Star Tabloid newspaper.

For the past six years, a chubby, self-professed movie geek named Harry Knowles has become a thorn in Hollywood's side with his Web site, aintitcoolnews.com.

Knowles and his band of "spies" plunder studios for scripts, casting notes, test screenings and other proprietary information. Knowles' actions have rewarded him with a cult following and minor celebrity.

In his first novel, a rapid read co-authored by two professional journalists, Knowles reveals his motivations and life tribulations. Knowles is a man deeply in love with film, having grown up obsessively watching movies.

Knowles' book and Web site have a similar feel - well-researched, infectiously enthusiastic and more than a little rambling.

Often, Knowles gets into long-winded rants in which he comes close to claiming himself as the messiah who will save all film. In Chapter 18, subtitled "Born Yesterday (or the Geek Manifesto)," Knowles predicts a film revolution that he plans to lead, unless the celebrity gets to his head along the way.

Hate to break it to you, Harry, but your head may already be too big.

I love Harry but..........2004-10-16

I love Harry Knowles but... I was dissapointed with this book. When he writes about his life... evocative... powerful... achingly beautiful. The part about his mother being killed for the insurance money moved me to tears. I really can really identify with his struggle. See I used to have some friends and we used to communicate on a website. But then one of them made a joke about me and played me like I was his two bit punk. I was so ashamed of myself. I ran away and could not face them anymore. This book gave me hope! Now I am going to make movies. I can't make excuses anymore. It's time.

But when he writes about movies... boring. I can see the movies myself. I want to know more about the man. Especially his romances. It was also way way too short. Dont worry folks, I am sure that his second book will be better.

A lesson in self indulgence.......2004-04-17

Unless you enjoying reading a book from someone who chooses what movies to review and is biased because of his "friendship" with people in the industry, avoid this book. Harry is a self-induldent, holier than-thou geek that lucked out by getting a good domain name and rubbing shoulders with the right people. Hey, it is a free country and he can captitalize how he wishes, but we as consumers should be aware that his opinion is not 100% honest as he says it is.

How scary has this world become when someone like Harry Knowles gets this much attention in Hollywood?

I could only read this book halfway through until I decided I needed to move on with my life. This man has received far more attention than he deserves. He obviously has no talent as a journalist and he certainly cannot run a website.

The place to start with Cage.......2006-09-17

This is THE place to begin with John Cage, easily one of the more intriguing creative minds of the 20th century.

Kostelanetz assembles a free-ranging portrait of the man - mostly varied essays and theories of composition and performance, but along the way Cage's more arcane influences also surface: his Buddhism, and fascination with chance, which was embodied in his fixation with the "I Ching," which became both a point of departure for theoretical meditations, and a most unusual compositional tool.

Cage was the quintessential modernist, and even when his music was daunting and intrepid, his ideas were never, ever stupid, ill-informed or socially disconnected. And Kostelanetz' anthology is great, affectionate, engaged and fascinating - it will turn you into an admirer.

Mediocre.......2004-12-20

Even though the titles of the puzzles are titles of popular movies, it does little to exercise your movie trivia knowledge. The clues and answers have nothing to do with movies, except for very rare occasions. Furthermore, in the 50 puzzles featured, the same clues appear in one puzzle right after another. Of course, it definately helps you with the other puzzles. If you know one answer, you'l be able to do all the puzzles.

Written for a specific audience .........2007-06-08

"Lean Six Sigma: Combining Six Sigma Quality with Lean Speed" is not a how-to book written for actual front-line practitioners of the techniques. Instead, George's effort is expressly directed to the possibly skeptical CEO who may be considering implementing a Lean/6 Sigma effort and who needs to know a bit more detail. As he says on page 70:

"One of the goals of this executive overview is to provide adequate depth . . . such that a rational CEO could judge whether this initiative is worthy of further study."

Given that purpose, the book often lapses into a sales pitch. "Hey, this is what the SMART kids are doing; you should follow along." George throws out a lot of bait about how a smart CEO can gain increase ROIC and an edge on his or her less-informed competition by implementing the methods he describes. (Of course, he and his partners will be readily available as consultants to assist in any such effort.)

At points, the tone is downright snide to those who might not instantly choose the enlightenment of "Lean Six Sigma." For example, on page 89, there is this observation:

"If, for whatever reason, your CEO does not have an intense interest in improving competitiveness and financial performance through operational improvement, then Lean Six Sigma is not appropriate for your firm at this time."

A similar messianic revelation appears on page 78:

"Lean Six Sigma is part of a large work-in-progress that continues to increase the wealth and opportunities of society despite the resistance to ignorance and intellect in many parts of the world."

While I am certain that there are significant advantages to be gained by a thorough and professional application of the tools and disciplines afforded by a simultaneous combination of Lean and Six Sigma, I have reservations about the breathless hyperbole in which George delivers his message.

Past the hyperbole, past the rah-rah, past the sales pitch, there is a good deal of value in this overview. But that's what it is: an overview. The material here is enough to orient a possible practitioner to look deeper into the processes, but this volume would be but the start of the investigation required.

LSS - The book does not marry them right........2007-05-31

I have read great books about Lean, classics like The Machine that Changed the World, The Toyota Way, Lean Thinking, etc., but this book fails to reach Lean's basics. The author approaches the subject without letting the reader grasp the Lean approach.
The Six Sigma side of the book idolizes black belts and focuses strictly on ROIC (return of invested capital), which may be short sighted on long term effects.
Lean Six Sigma is a powerful approach and can produce amazing results, but the book does not marry them right.

Good structure and content with lots of errors.......2007-04-29

First, let me say that this book is well structured for managers and beginning practitioners who want to learn about Lean Six Sigma (LSS). Its content includes background, tools, and case studies to assist the reader with learning what LSS is all about. However, I seriously question whether this book was ever edited at all. To me, this normally would be a minor annoyance. With this book however, I noticed entire sentences that are non sequitor - so bad in fact, that one can tell that someone accidentally hit the delete key and deleted parts of two sentences. This I can get over, but the errors with the graphs, tables, and math in the book really kills it for me. So much so that it would seriously mislead someone who is not familiar with some of the topics. Without these errors, this book has a shot at five stars. I highly recommend the author submit a second edition - the readers deserve it.

Fine on Background, Light on Details.......2006-10-28

Nice broad brushstroke overview of Six Sigma, but never really got into the heart of the matter. Certainly not a book to check out just prior to an implementation kick off- more in line with mulling over the "does Six Sigma matter to me" question.

Intellectual Piracy.......2006-03-21

This book was a rip-off of Philip Crosby's works such as "Quality Is Free" and "Quality Without Tears." Just subtitute "Lean Six Sigma" everywhere for "Quality Improvement Process (QIP)" and it's the same methodology for implementation. Book, chapter and verse...

I should know: I worked for Mr. Crosby for four years.
