Book Description
The traditional image of the Victorian woman presents her as strait-laced and prudish, her clothing an outward sign of her sexual repression and exploitation. This situation supposedly persisted until the Women's Rights Movement and World War I forced the world to acknowledge that women were
liberated individuals with legs. Yet Valerie steele demonstrates that eroticism formed the basis for the Victorian ideal of feminine beauty and fashion--indeed, that the concepts of beauty and fashion are essentially erotic. She shows that, far from being passive "sex objects," Victorian women,
like their modern counterparts, themselves chose to emulate an erotic ideal as an aspect of their own self-fulfillment. Even the notorious corset was neither fetishistic nor an unhealthy instrument of torture, she argues, although its comlex and ambivalent sexual symbolism aroused controversy.
Fashion and Eroticism shows how the New Look of "sexy" modern naturally from within the pre-war world of fashion and not as part of an intifashion movement.
Steele's conclusions are based on prodigious documentary evidence, including visual and material research, in costume collections in the United States, Great Britain, Europe, and even Japan. Fashiona and Eroticism is not only a radical revision of the Conventional understanding of Victorian
fashion; it is a major contribution to the histyory of women and sexuality.
About the Author:
Valerie steele received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1983, and was the 1984 First Ladies' Fellow at the Division of Costume, National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian Institution.

In this fascinating new study, Valerie Steele shows how eroticism formed the basis of the Victorian ideal of feminine beauty and fashion, indeed, how the very concepts of beauty and fashion are in essence erotic. Far from being passive sex objects, Victorian women, like their modern counterparts, chose to emulate an erotic ideal as an aspect of their own self fulfillment and were not merely presenting themselves as men wanted to see them.
Fashion And Eroticism is not only a radical revision of our conventional understanding of Victorian fashion; it is also a major contribution to the history of women and sexuality. Steele offers a powerful and convincing new interpretation of the Victorian woman, who has traditionally been presented as strait-laced and prudish, her clothing an outward sign of her sexual repression and exploitation. Steele shows that the Victorians were, in fact, well aware that women had legs. Even the notorious corset was neither fetishistic nor an unhealthy instrument of torture, although its complex and ambivalent sexual symbolism aroused controversy.
Steele explodes the myth that progress triumphed over fashion. She explains how the twentieth century look of sexy, healthy beauty evolved from within the prewar world of fashion, and not as part of an anti fashion or dress reform movement. Her conclusions are based on prodigious documentary, visual, and material research (including the study of costume collections in the United States, great Britain, Europe, and even Japan), set within a sophisticated interpretive framework. Her use of psychoanalytic theory to explain the connection between fashion and eroticism is both lucid and persuasive, and her discussion of eroticism is sensible and precise, a far cry from the usual prurient and anecdotal histories of sexuality. Fashion And Eroticism approaches its subject from the perspective of the most recent work in womenýs history and concluded that fashion and feminism are by no means irreconcilable.
Valerie Steele received her Ph.D. in history from Yale University in 1983, and was the 1984 First Ladies Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution.

FINALLY...A 'HOW TO' ACTING BIBLE.......2000-10-01
It's taken till the new millenium for someone to do a "how to" book about acting that plainly and simply zeroes in on just what it takes to be a great performer in front of a camera. Whether you're young or old, male or female, rookie or pro - if you are, or ever intend to act in film or television - you owe it to yourself (AND your future audience) to read this book. FILM AND TELEVISION ACTING by Ian Bernard
Reviewed by Academy Award and "Emmy" honored actor/writer/producer/director, Don Murray.
FILM AND TELEVISION ACTING belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who aspires to a career in motion pictures or is inquisitive about how the process of motion picture acting takes place. Author Ian Bernard, who has distinguished himself as an actor, writer, musical composer and director, adds to his well deserved laurels with this book that leads the actor through the technical steps and creative nuances of acting for both big screen and small.
Most actors begin their careers in amateur stage theatrics. No matter how competent their stage training may be, the transition to the screen can be disconcerting. Some aspects of screen acting make the transition easier: Voice projection, vital on the stage, doesn't come into play in screen acting. The "three quarters front" body position on stage is replaced by direct alignment, but exact positions become more vital in front of the camera, in order to remain in focus and within the lights. Much is made of "retakes" in film; if you don't get it right in take one there is take two, and twelve, and twenty if need be. But those extra takes are more often given to correct technical errors than to improve performance (especially in television where time restraints make compromise in the realm of performance common place).
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of switching from stage to screen performance is the lack of continuity in shooting a movie. One often performs the love scene before the scene where boy meets girl and since there is no build up of emotion that carries from one scene to another as on stage, the screen actor usually has to stimulate his emotions by his own solitary devices.
Mr. Bernard's book is a blueprint for building a bridge between stage and screen acting by providing theory and technique for making the transition.
For both aspiring screen actors and those of the motion picture audience who are interested in enhancing their enjoyment through a deeper understanding of the acting process, Ian Bernards's FILM AND TELEVISION ACTING belongs on the b ookshelf right next to Constantin Stanislavski's AN ACTOR PREPARES.

Finally something practical!.......2005-09-30
Well, after how many years of being a drummer, I've looked for drums instructional books that would revive me out of rhythm death. But time and again I get severely disappointed becuase you'll either run across things that are just way too basic or way too extreme. Man, all I want is something practical, but challenging, and leaving a lot of room to grow. That's why I feel that I have been brought to life with this book. Rick doesn't just talk about linear drumming, beat displacements, etc. He shows you practical and useful excercises and grooves that will get you started on the right track. The concepts go beyond the book itself, but at least finally there's something out there to get you started in the first place without making you feel like you already have to be insanely great to begin with. Yes, I recommend this book for the intermediate drummer that have a fairly good dexterity with paradiddles and it's relatives. It's amazing how much you can do with just the right concepts.
MUST HAVE!!!.......2004-07-29
This book and cd is a great help to me and my playing.
Rick helped me with broadening my playing by the exercises within the book. Even beginners with knowledge of the basic note values can benefit from Rick's Licks.
Rick's got some GreatLicks.......2003-08-26
I just read the latest review in Modern Drummer for Rick's Licks which received a 9 out of 10 rating, so I had to get a copy. They weren't kidding when they said "The concept that simple patterns, when applied and accented different ways on the drumkit, can sound so awesome, has great appeal, and Rick's Licks is an eye- and ear- opener to those horizons. Simply, it demystifies odd times and polyrhythms. Drummers working in any style can use this book to expand their personal bag of tricks." I couldn't agree more. Great stuff!!!
Creative Drumming secrets.......2003-03-05
This book/CD is a great tool to develop better independence skills, and fill your "drum fill bucket" with hundreds of ideas. This book is very well written, easy to understand and
tons of fun to work through. As a teacher, I use this with all my intermediate and advanced players. A must for your library of drum books!

Book Description
Robert Rubin was sworn in as the seventieth U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in January 1995 in a brisk ceremony attended only by his wife and a few colleagues. As soon as the ceremony was over, he began an emergency meeting with President Bill Clinton on the financial crisis in Mexico. This was not only a harbinger of things to come during what would prove to be a rocky period in the global economy; it also captured the essence of Rubin himself--short on formality, quick to get into the nitty-gritty.
From his early years in the storied arbitrage department at Goldman Sachs to his current position as chairman of the executive committee of Citigroup, Robert Rubin has been a major figure at the center of the American financial system. He was a key player in the longest economic expansion in U.S. history. With
In an Uncertain World, Rubin offers a shrewd, keen analysis of some of the most important events in recent American history and presents a clear, consistent approach to thinking about markets and dealing with the new risks of the global economy.
Rubin's fundamental philosophy is that nothing is provably certain. Probabilistic thinking has guided his career in both business and government. We see that discipline at work in meetings with President Clinton and Hillary Clinton, Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, Alan Greenspan, Lawrence Summers, Newt Gingrich, Sanford Weill, and the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan. We see Rubin apply it time and again while facing financial crises in Asia, Russia, and Brazil; the federal government shutdown; the rise and fall of the stock market; the challenges of the post-September 11 world; the ongoing struggle over fiscal policy; and many other momentous economic and political events.
With a compelling and candid voice and a sharp eye for detail, Rubin portrays the daily life of the White House-confronting matters both mighty and mundane--as astutely as he examines the challenges that lie ahead for the nation. Part political memoir, part prescriptive economic analysis, and part personal look at business problems,
In an Uncertain World is a deep examination of Washington and Wall Street by a figure who for three decades has been at the center of both worlds.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Good read for people interested in finance and politics........2007-09-02
This book is an interesting read for people who are interested in investing, understanding stock markets and the connection between the politics and markets.
The author talks about his experiences at Goldman Sachs which are mostly about arbitraging transactions and his growth as partner in the company. The interesting reading starts from the time he involved with white house and then as treasury secretary. Rubin has explained understandably how the politics play role in managing the financial markets around the globalized world during turmoils in different countries. And also the author talks his views on rise and fall of stock market and the role of developed countries in helping other countries to grow economically. This book gives you good understanding of how the Treasury, Federal Bank and different departments of US Government are involved in the decision making of different policies related to economy in US and in other countries.
In this era of globalization and having all the markets are so interlinked, if you wonder how the different governments and countries react to the any financial turmoil in a particular country, then this book is worth reading.
The lives some lead.......2007-04-08
Fascinating look into the life of someone who has experienced the heights of the macroeconomy yet never becomes so accustomed to it that his perspective is undiminished. An outsiders look in to the world of one who is a cold systematic decision maker and his climb and experiences along the way.
Very useful for one who wants a glimpse into this world, who wants to understand the depths of the world of high finance and the decisions that must be made. A book without much glorification or adulteration from the sometimes cruel, imposing, impersonal truth that is that world.
Alan, Larry and Bob.......2007-04-05
Robert Rubin provides invaluable insights into the workings of the Treasury and the White House. Recollections of the conversations that he had with Alan Greenspan and Larry Summers are particularly revealing. Here are a series of quotes that every financial official or every central banker should use as a reference:
- On central bank independence: "As the longest-serving Federal Reserve chairman in history, William McChesney Martin, famously said, the Fed chairman is the fellow who takes the punch bowl away just when the party is getting going. That's why the chairman should have a fixed term, which he does, rather than serving at the pleasure of the President. This helps insulate him from political pressure."
- On democratic accountability and the mastery with which Alan Greenspan testified before Congress: "That's an interesting observation you make, Senator, about the earth being flat," Alan would say. "If I might, let me rephrase the question." Alan would then ask himself a completely different question and answer it with such complexity and finely calibrated nuance that the questioner faced a choice between nodding intelligently and acknowledging his own confusion. Alan would then ask the House member or senator, "Does that respond to your question?" And the interrogator would invariably say, "Yes, it does."
- On exchange rate policy: "My substantive view was that economic fundamentals determine exchange rate levels over time, and that we should focus our attention on strengthening U.S. economic policy and performance, not on influencing the level of the currency (...) I was skeptical about the efficacy of currency 'interventions' per se--that is, of governments trying to influence the exchange rate of a currency by buying and selling large quantities in the open market. My experience with foreign exchange markets at Goldman Sachs led me to believe that trading flows were simply too vast for such interventions to have more than a momentary effect, except in very unusual circumstances."
- On using calculated ambiguity when commenting on market trends: "For example, my saying 'A strong dollar is in our national interest, and we have a strong dollar for some time now' created great excitement at a press briefing, as it was construed to mean that we wouldn't mind seeing the dollar remain strong but soften somewhat."
- On financial innovation and systemic risk: "Larry Summers characterized my concerns about derivatives as a preference for playing tennis with wooden rackets--as opposed to the more powerful graphite and titanium ones used today. Perhaps, but I would still reduce the leverage allowed on derivatives substantially."
The creator of Rubinomics.......2006-12-19
Robert Rubin's tenure as Treasury Secretary of US coincided with one of the largest economic expansions in its history. This autobiography is probably the best by any public figure in recent times. Some of the episodes like the one on how the US establishment dealt with Mexican economic crisis are very-well written.
The only negative about the book is that Rubin tries to be nice to everyone and does not make public his stand on some of the more controversial issues of recent times.
If Push Comes to Shove, Will Robert Rubin Become a Republican?.......2006-06-08
Robert Rubin is a cultural liberal. He even mentions reading Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac during his formative years. His coauthor Jacob Weisberg is associated with the slightly left of center website Slate.com. Regrettably, like many American Jews he simplistically seems to gravitate towards a knee jerk affiliation with the Democratic Party. He was born during the disgraceful era when anti-Semitic "gentleman's agreement" social polices were often the norm. I doubt if he ever gave serious consideration to joining the GOP. Jews were simply suppose to be existentially committed Democrats. Whatever, Rubin is very bright guy who clearly understands the value of free markets. He does have some disagreements with various Republican economic policies concerning taxes and balanced budgets. Nonetheless, Robert Rubin is not a Daily Kos populist style Democrat. In other words, Clinton's former Secretary of the Treasury is unlikely to rebuke Wal-Mart anytime in the near future.
I highly recommend this wonderful book for those who wish to understand the irreconcilable differences severely damaging today's Democratic Party. The Daily Kos crowd considers Robert Rubin to be a sellout to the international business community. The old Clinton coalition is still powerful. Nonetheless, the radical leftists are now "mainstream" and possess the veto power over the Democrats' selection of their presidential candidate. What is going to happen in 2008? Will Robert Rubin remain on the sidelines---or will he reluctantly even join the Republican Party? Do yourself a favor. First of all read In An Uncertain World. Afterwards, you must force yourself to read the vastly inferior Crashing the Gate by Jerome Armstrong and Markos Moulitsas Zuniga (the Daily Kos). This will likely make you sick to your stomach if you are a Democrat. It should make Republican loyalists like myself jump with glee. Yup, in 2008 the Democrats will have to contend with the Daily Kos faction attempting to marginalize Robert Rubin and his buddies. If nothing else, this struggle to the political death will be entertaining.
