    Book Description

This biography and illustrated guide highlights the work of master designer Koos van den Akker and provides inspiration for bold, unique sewing creations. Chronicling the designer's 30 years in haute couture, this book follows van den Akker from his start in the Paris workrooms of Christian Dior to his rise in the fashion world and the establishment of his own Madison Avenue boutique. Included are demonstrations for duplicating several of his construction and design techniques that offer illustrated sewing instructions and intricate details for home sewers to imitate. The designs, with their richness of texture, generosity of color, and dynamic mix of fabrics, share the full scope of van den Akker's masterful creations.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a good book for design inspiration and learning new techniques.......2007-02-24

This book is useful for people who want to know how Koos gets his effects with fabric. The author and designer are quite generous about sharing techniques that home sewers can use to design their own garments. I feel the book is inspiring and satisfying in that sense. I would also like to see a larger coffeetable-type book showing a large number of Koos's designs over the years, all professionally photographed in full color (is anyone listening out there?). But that is not the intent of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Fabric Techniques.......2006-10-29

I'm afraid I was ignorant on who Koos was, but intrigued by the unusual fabric projects in the book. Now I know more about his one-of-a-kind womenswear, but the main intent here is to teach the home sewer collage quilting techniques with Koos as inspiration.
The book gives tips on collage design, tells about facing fabric using the yardage method and block method, and shows how to make bias tape and fabric lace. Other techniques shown include slicing, using yarn trim, origami patches, applique, and image transfer. Photos of unique garments show the many uses for the techniques.
Many of these will appeal to quilters making quilted clothing or even to use in unique quilts.

2 out of 5 stars Where is Koos?.......2006-10-10

I wish that there had been more photos of Koos work! The author gives very good instruction for doing applique, making bindings etc. However, in all, the book is disappointing if one is looking for inspiration and examples of the magical fabric combinations that made Koos's tradmark. Far too few examples of Koos's couture collage. I would not have bought the book if I'd read the reviews. Too bad!

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing ..........2005-04-20

A slim colourful book of some 111 pages. Deceptive in the use of Koos' name and photographs of his work, there are only about 50 pages of techniques that could equally be found in a good fabric collage or a quilting book.

          Book Description

Buckle up for a bumpy ride down history lane! Welcome to the world's first unofficial chronicle of international skyjacking. Acclaimed as the most exceptional entry at Documenta 10, this pre-September 11 documentary film takes you on an alternately frisky and subversive tour of terrorism: from the idealistic heyday of the romantic hijacker-revolutionaries of the 1960s and 70s to the state-sponsored anonymous parcel bombs of the 90s. Blending archival footage with personal home movies, this film investigates the media politics within the imagination of disaster. Inspired by Don DeLillo's novel Mao II, this project riffs on DeLillo's motif: "Home is a failed idea." Director Johan Grimonprez unwraps our complicity in the urge for ultimate disaster, as the spectacle of international terrorism and the desire for ber mayhem invades the living room and threatens our domestic bliss. An original soundtrack by David Shea accomanies this eccentric rollercoaster ride through history.

              Book Description

With imaginative illustrations that give small children concrete, immediate examples of the seven "deadly" sins, this book explains how Pride, Greed, Envy, Anger, Lust, Gluttony and Sloth can make us very lonely people. Then it offers the cure, the four cardinal and three theological virtues--Prudence, Justice, Courage, Temperance, Faith, Hope and Charity--that can mend relationships and rebuild what sin has broken.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Handles Moral Issues with Charm and Humor.......2003-03-11

It's a delightful book. In a publishing area that is often glutted with trivia, it is refreshing to find a book for children that says something significant in an entertaining and significant way.

Through amazingly creative pictures and text, this book entertains and enlightens children about important moral issues. Without lecturing or preaching, it demonstrates with easily understood situations and examples how seven dark and lonely places can be transformed into Seven Warm Places filled with Light, Beauty, Happiness, and Love. The bright, funny illustrations and the creative use of text further enhance the content. I highly recommend this book to parents, to teachers and to children of all ages.

                GOOD AND EVIL.

It has long been believed that there are seven sins from which all others grow. These seven deadly sins serve as warnings to those traveling the path of the Christian life-for it is these sins and those that stem from them that most often lead us astray.

These sins are balanced by seven virtues. Cultivating these cardinal virtues builds Christian character and leads to a lifestyle that is pleasing to God.

Originally published as two separate volumes in 1901 and 1902 by the American Tract Society, The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Cardinal Virtues gives believers a guide for facing good and evil in their Christian journey.

                5 out of 5 stars Self-examination.......2007-04-10

Stalker's analysis is profound and concise. The chapters are very short; however, the reader is left in contemplation long after the last page is turned. You may enter this book with the misconception of having committed one of these vices. You will be disillusioned to find that you are guilty of all of them since they each come in many forms.

                Product Description

As a professional apologist, Mark Brumley sees this renaissance as an immensely good thing--an essential part of the Church's evangelical mission. Even so, grave dangers attend the apologetics renaissance. Some of them are so serious that, left unaddressed, they threaten to undermine the good apologetics can accomplish. Brumley calls these dangers the Seven Deadly Sins of Catholic Apologists and Evangelization. Like the seven deadly sins of the moral life, they are "deadly" not merely as isolated, individual acts but as vices or evil habits--habitual tendencies to act in a certain way. In this volume, Brumley exposes them for you.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well Done and Much Needed.......2007-01-10

The biblical charter of Catholic apologetics is 1Peter 3:14-15:

Have no fear of them, nor be troubled,
but in your hearts reverence Christ as
Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense
to any one who calls you to account for
the hope that is in you, yet do it
                with gentleness and reverence

But far too often Catholic apologists seem to have shortened this in their heads to "always be prepared to make a defense to any one" and then added silently -- implicitly, but really -- "the best defense is a good offense." The end result is not effective apologists but offensive Catholics.

Brumley provides a welcome correction that is stern without being preachy and will certainly make those who follow its advice not only more effective apostles but also better Christians.

I particularly like his section on what he calls "apologetic gluttony" which is the mistaken and misguided attempt to "prove" all of the mysteries of the faith, essentially biting off more than can be chewn. I expect that this may be a temptation that converts are particularly prone to. In telling the story of how you became convinced of the truth of the faith, it's easy to make it seem like an intellectual achievement rather than a gift of God.

                4 out of 5 stars Well-written and helpful.......2005-08-21

How Not To Share Your Faith shows the mistakes people make when trying to talk to others about their faith. This book is helpful in that it discusses in detail what to avoid when arguing with someone about your faith. It can be easy to think you are going about the discussion the right way, when in reality you are making everything worse. This book seems to be written mainly for apologists, but I think everyone who wants to defend their faith can glean something useful from this well-written book.

                5 out of 5 stars Good intentions aren't always enough. . ........2005-05-03

There are plenty of well-intentioned people who want to stand up for what they believe and to defend their faith. They most especially want to bring others to the truth. This is a good and loving thing to do. But good intentions are not enough. There are ways that work and ways that don't. This book exposes the pitfalls that you'll want to avoid when sharing your faith. It is easy to read and very practical, with examples of better ways that are more likely to win minds and hearts.

’A recovery of the old sense of sin is essential to Christianity. Christ takes it for granted that men are bad. Until we really feel this assumption of His to be true, though we are part of the world He came to save, we are not part of the audience to whom His words are addressed.’ --C.S. Lewis. Pride...envy...anger...lust...gluttony...sloth...avarice... C.S. Lewis, often called the grandfather of evangelical writers, is well known for the impact his books made on a secular society as well as in Christian circles. Not surprisingly, he had something to say about these seven deadly sins. The seven virtues -- prudence, courage, justice, temperance, faith, hope, love -- were portrayed in his writings as well. Gerard Reed, Ph.D., explores Lewis’s thoughts on vice and virtue as expressed in his writings. Although Lewis never wrote a full-fledged ethical treatise on the seven deadly sins and seven virtures, Reed draws upon Lewis’s words in timeless classics such as Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, Surprised by Joy, and others, and also draws upon thinkers Lewis used, such as Aristotle and Aquinas. I heard Andrew Greeley once in a speech he gave to diocesan priests of the Diocese of Helena, MT in the Carroll College cafeteria in 1966. He is best characterized by his books. What he says and writes seems at loose ends with the real. Then and still.

                    3 out of 5 stars Soap opera........2004-05-17

If I'm not mistaken, this is Greeley's first novel. Many others followed. I don't believe that success was due to any particularly redeeming features of this book -- it's little more than a soap opera. More likely, the public found it titillating that a priest would write fiction that included sex scenes and other "shocking" material. If Greeley were not a priest, I don't think anyone would have paid attention to this book (and there probably wouldn't have been any others from his pen published).

have an audio version. It is a great story about love, Gods love for us and our struggle to return it and to love one another. Each time I read it or listen to it I discover something more about the theme, the characters and myself.

I cannot believe I finished this book. It is truly a piece of garbage.

2 out of 5 stars The Cardinal Snooze!.......2002-05-29

I found this book in the free book bin at work, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. The beginning and middle were okay, and I kept reading in hopes that the plot would pick up. It didn't -- and, in fact, got WORSE! Greeley began introducing more and more characters, all with similar (and hard to pronounce) names. The plot was jumpy, and I found myself skipping the "really boring" parts about the papal election to get to the "just plain boring" parts about the other characters. And the end, WHAT END? Nothing was resolved! Not that I minded. By the end of this 500+ pager, I was ready to call it quits no matter what happened! The only good thing about this book, in my opinion, is that I didn't pay for it. I think I'll put it back in the free book bin where I found it and let another poor sap suffer!

I got this looking for some quality occult fiction the king I found in Aleister Crowley and to a lesser extent Silver Ravenwolf. I thought it was a good book with a cool dak side cover artwork, but I found the plot of a group of psuedo heroes avenging a rapist to be buried beneath a premise of genuine occult things. I guess it is worth the kind of low price you'd expect from a mass market paperback format. I thought it had some suspense especially with the satanists involved. Occult fiction is one of those unique sub genres- you'll either love it or hate it.

                    4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2003-02-09

Like "The Committee," Buckland's novel keeps you wanting more. He obviously did some research on the Vatican and found a way to weave it into the story line. His two main characters, I feel, are well-developed, but the others need a little more depth. His writing is a little spare, but, hey, Hemingway got away with it, so why not. Looking forward to developments in later novels.

                    5 out of 5 stars Nonsense.......1999-06-22

Yet another attempt to get into another genre of the writing world. Too bad you didn't advise all the readers of all your past works about the fiction in them. Most of us in the Craft know about your ability to sound valid and this is yet another stunt to show that you have talent in the writing field. New Flash: YOU DON'T. Maybe a biography of you might be a good idea for one of the many of us who have known of your bookwriting episodes. Wouldn't it be fun for a tell-all book about Buckland to come out? Bet it would be better than this one!

4 out of 5 stars A good read of a book concerning magick in fiction.......1999-04-13

Raymond Buckland is quite an authority on magick and psychism in the USA. His talent in this area has led him to create a good book using it with his characters. The magick is believable, although somewhat pushing the limits of imagination.

This book could have been 5 stars except that Buckland lacks the necessary ingridients in making well fleshed out characters. The other problem with this book I felt is that the villian is given to us too early on along with his motives. We know exactly what he is up to and this detracts from the overall layout of the story!

If you are into magick, psychism, wicca, voudoun or any other type of esoterical beleif system, I think that you will find this book a good read!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!.......1998-03-30

Hey, when one of the nations top authorities on Witchcraft sits down to write a novel, it results in an awesome story with true-to-life characters. If only Buckland had been consulted when writing the movie "the Craft" maybe then that movie would have turned out great. No matter, this book is an awesome story. The second book about the commitee, it deals with a black magician in the vatican causing weather problems in the good old U.S. of A., and when the Committee gets called in, its time for a realistic no-holds-barred struggle between the forces of good and evil.

Well that was my feeling after I browsed through it - if you are an SAP user then you must be investing a good part of your time using SAP - then you must have a live SAP system and some users manual. Then why do you need this book.
Most of the things taught in this book are also in windows for dummies.
due to the nature of SAP - before you use the software you must know a little bit of the architecture and unless you know that screen shots will not help you. If you need to know details please go to help.sap.com or sap service market place but please do not waste your money on this book.
