Clear, sensitive, and insightful.......2002-10-10
With the many approaches now available to artists working three-dimensionally there is, more than ever, a critical need for intelligent and carefully organized texts that can provide theoretical structure for students setting out on their journey to shape their ideas and environment. Stephen Luecking's recently published "Principles of Three-Dimensional Design: Objects, Space and Meaning" does just that by providing the kind of thorough, thoughtful, clearly written, generously illustrated and well organized text that will be of benefit to students now and for many years to come.
My students loved this book........2002-08-20
My students loved this book! They found that complicated ideas were presented to them in a fully understandabke yet sophisticated way. The size is very managable, and it was easy for them to read any chapter several times to absorb the many layers of understanding. The illustrations were multi-national and did a fine job of representing women as well as men. My only suggestion would be that the second printing be done with higher contrast. It is a relief to have a thorough and complex 3-D text that is also accessable and satisfying for the students to read.
great 3-D overview.......2002-06-25
I used this book for a class and I found it very easy to follow and well organized. There were good visual examples from a wide variety of current artists. I liked that it involved a large amount of art theory, but also provided a good practical reference for the kinds of projects we did in class. Overall, I think it gave a very solid introduction to 3-D design.
Poor text and book........2002-05-21
I found this book a very poor text. The information was muddled, There was no educational objective. Nowhere was there any reference of the author's credentials (education nor art). The Photos were irrelevant, provincial and of poor form. Vocabulary had no educational quality nor purpose. It is a forty dollar magazine that is most overpriced.
For the general reader, there is no purpose. Nothing enlightening, broadening nor of memorable value.

Beautiful pictures of beautiful ties!.......2002-04-12
If you are a collector this may interest you. The book is primarily photographs of beautiful collectible ties. There is some history of the tie and labels to look for. All in all is is a pretty book. I had hoped for more information on values but was disappointed in that respect.
Nice little picture book.......2000-07-01
This is a charming, but ultimately shallow, book. It's something I like to look at when I'm looking for inspiration on vintge style, but there's not much context here. I'd love a bit of socio-history to give it some substance.
Fun!.......1999-07-27
Well, if you're into ties, this is a great book! Not only it is fun to look at, but it serves as a useful guide for dating and categorizing old ties. This book has quite a bit of good info, as well, especially about labels and designers. Worth a look!

Book Description
The essays here read the Shakespeare films of the 1990s as key instruments with which Western culture confronts the anxieties attendant upon the transition from one century to another. Such films as Hamlet, Love's Labour's Lost, Othello, Shakespeare in Love and William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the contributors maintain, engage with some of the most pressing concerns of the present, apocalyptic condition--familial crisis, social estrangement, urban blight, cultural hybridity, literary authority, the impact of technology, and the end of history.

Book Description
Critically acclaimed as one of the best music books of all time, this is the true, inside story of Creation Records - and of the the last twenty years of British music. Late in 1999, Alan McGee announced that he was to sell his record label - Creation Records. The decision brought to an end an extraordinary chapter in British rock history. The Creation Records Story is in equal parts black comedy, tragedy, farce and urban myth, laced with large, large helpings of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. It's the tale of how a Scottish train driver left his job in 1980 and moved to London to start a record label. Since then he has developed - and shaken - a spectular drug habit, suffered a nervous breakdown, become a millionaire and, famously, visited 10 Downing Street. He's also, more importantly, discovered and nutured fantastical, iconic rock bands...such as Oasis and Primal Scream.David Cavanagh is the UK's most respected music journalist, and this book is a must for anyone interested in the music industry over the last two decades.

a great butt, READ.......2006-11-01
1. yes, this is a long book. it should be even longer, but i am quite sure that's not possible. this book is extremely fascinating. what other book will lend insight into orange juice, television personalities, c86, acid house, shoegaze, and britpop all in one fell swoop? there is nothing else, my friend. so read up and wish there was more.
2. yes, my bloody valentine are nearly treated with disdain by the writer. but that's because they are perhaps the most overhyped 'wives-tale-of-a-band' ever to emerge from popular music in that particular era. it was slim pickins' in the music press at that time and they chose to bestow kevin sheilds with some genius-dom. i'm agreeable in some respects, but more agreeable with the author if he had taken a more slight perspective on the career of my bloody valentine. that is not to say that the writer treats MBV lightly or even has a negative word to say about MBV. one could only argue that they are treated subjectively in the context of what was happening at the time. and this excludes the post-"Loveless" jerking off that was heavily mythologized by more than a handful of publicists and journalists. these things being said, my bloody valentine were a fine, misunderstood group. but ultimately a small fragment of the creation records story. an amazing amazing story that has to be read to be believed.
3. this may be, in my humble opinion, the finest read on contemporary rock (to generalize it) music you can get. i've read "rip it up", "rock and the pop narcotic" (which i found particularly nauseating), "mystery train", "psychotic recations and carburetor dung" and other sorts of books. although this is clearly more of a specific biography of a particular part of music history, i found it exceptionally more insightful than most other books due to the superb writing.
4. john paffenbarger is some my bloody valentine fanatic white-guy moron who bought the book after a good decade of hearing people praise MBV like they were the bee's knees. in reality he must have piss poor taste considering he had no commentary to lend to the much more interesting bands in the book such as the pastels, orange juice, jesus and mary chain, TVPs, etc. john paffenbarger is totally gay and is an excellent reason computers and internet connections should not be sold to just anyone.
A great read, but...........2004-12-24
Critically acclaimed account of the (in)famous UK record label Creation Records. The book tells the story of flamboyant company founder Alan McGee and the many great bands that recorded for the label, such as the Jesus and Mary Chain, the House of Love, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Primal Scream and Oasis. It's incredibly comprehensive, including a wealth of behind the scenes material and colorful anectdotes.
That said, the book has some shortcomings. First, it's too long - 750 pages plus. At least 25 to 30% of the book could have been cut with little effect. More important, from the perspective of a US reader, is that the book is written in the style of a typical UK music critic, more concerned with artist sales and fashion than the quality of the music in question. The "prize" of the book's subtitle, for example, is Oasis - A highly derivative band which had huge success in the UK, but is already largely forgotten in the US.
On the flip side, Kevin Shields and My Bloody Valentine are treated almost with disdain by the author. While it is true they caused immense financial problems for Creation, their amazingly original Loveless album is now generally regarded as a masterpiece on par with Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds - And the principal legacy of Creation Records. The author completely misses this. Virtually all of the discussion of MBV is of their recording and financial difficulties. Even when he gives brief praise to the album upon its release, the author can hardly complete a sentence about it without repeating the band's problems.
Nevertheless, for US fans of Creation bands, the book is practically the only authoritative source on many of the lesser publicized bands, such as The House of Love, Ride, Slowdive, Swervedriver, Teenage Fanclub and the like. The fact that so many great bands were on one label is remarkable, and this is its story, in exhaustive detail.
Book Description
This great beginning book shows players how to confidently start out a chess game with solid near-foolproof openings. Easy-to-read and targeted to novice and new chess player, the oversized format is filled with large diagrams, clear explanations, and ideas and concepts that are easy for new players. Even better, no knowledge of chess notation is required, nor does the reader need to memorize variations. Everything learned becomes common sense and the game becomes fun. Schiller, an ardent teacher of children and beginning players, shows the top 10 most important chess openings and teaches readers the importance of focusing on the four clear goals of the opening. This book makes us want to learn chess all over again!

A good but slightly unbalanced approach.......2005-09-05
In the search for the holy grail of a low-ranking player's opening repertoire I've gone through quite a few books, keeping in mind that low-rankers such as I should spend the great bulk of study time on tactics, not openings.
So what is needed is something to get through the opening and into the middle game with at least rough equality; and this has to be done without learning countless variations and endless theory, most of which the lower class player is unlikely to encounter in any event.
Schiller attempts to provide just this sort of thing, and succeeds at least to some degree. The book starts with the obligatory material on chess notation (which surely you know by now, or this book is not for you at all) and continues with about 18 pages on basic opening principles. The book continues with 60 pages on "Your White Openings," about 50 more on "Your Black Openings," and concludes with 10 pages on "Closed Games."
Recommended for White is e4 and the Bishop's Opening (Bc4) in response to e5. How to play against other major lines, such as the Sicilian, French, etc., is covered as well. Schiller emphasizes concepts rather than lines and variations, which at the target skill level seems like the right thing. The criticism of not enough depth might apply, but unfairly, as that is not the purpose here.
Schiller uses up quite a bit of space on the Fried Liver Attack (and more space later on its defense). While interesting and fun, these pages could have been better used on Closed Games, as I'll discuss below.
To defend against e4 Schiller recommends e5 and takes us on a survey tour of where the game might go from there. He asks us not to be afraid of the Ruy Lopez and recommends the relatively unusual Cozio Defense. He explains the concepts quite well; you'll have to decide if this variant is to your taste.
Schiller really skimps when, in the final chapter, he gets around to defending against 1 d4. His comment that you won't see the opening very often doesn't quite ring true enough. He takes us through one possible defense and leaves it at that. There is *no* discussion of any other White opening such as the English, Bird's etc. etc.
The book starts out strong and seems to fade little by little, almost as if the author ran out of energy, or more likely, allowable page count.
So, should you use this book? I think it provides many valuable insights and a reasonable plan for the lower class player, but even with its goal of presenting ideas, it lacks completeness. That said, it is probably one of the best books of its type. After all, the challenge of the almost self-contradictory concept of a "simplified beginner's opening repertoire" is considerable.

how to play openings, plus good repertoire advice.......2001-03-31
Despite its title, this book really works as an introduction to opening play for players of all ages. It's not as simplistic as you might think. The only real concession Walker makes to juniors is in introducing a few characters with silly names, such as Mr. Woodpusher, Bobby Blunder, and Count Alberic O'Kelly de Galway.
The first two sections explain the principles of development, space, and controlling the center. Walker uses full games to illustrate his points. I have to admit, I've never been a fan of this method because it seems to imply that sound opening moves automatically lead to checkmate by move 30, which is an oversimplification. Still, these sections nicely (re-)enforce the basic principles of opening play.
In the next section, Walker surveys the openings by showing the main lines of about 25-30 different openings. The lines go about 10-15 moves deep, but probably do not include enough explanation for you to actually play them without other sources.
In the final section, Walker provides a full repertoire to use as White (Giuoco Piano) and as Black vs. e4, d4, c4 and Nf3. Here he shows you more than just the main line. I think any player below Class C can probably use this repertoire in actual play. I know people will complain that he doesn't give you enough options as to what to play, but I think you pay the price if you want a book that shows you detail on every opening.
I'd recommend this book as a first opening chess book and perhaps the only opening text you'll need until you reach at least 1400, provided you utilize Walker's repertoire advice.
The first 51 pages is the reason you should buy this book........1999-03-14
I have not seen much better on the subjects of space, development, and time. I have used this book to coach many chess players and they quickly become much harder to beat. I think it is a great buy.
Best Chess Book for Competitive Players.......1997-03-27
Text book openings are described move-by-move including justification and capitalizing on error

Data, data and more data - all well organized.......2006-02-15
While ETFs are increasing in popularity, there are few objective sources of analysis. Look no further than Morningstar's book. In a comprehensive, well-organized manner, the book provides you with information about the largest and most actively traded ETFs. The first part of the book provides an overview of ETFs and comparisons with traditional mutual funds (no new earth shattering information can be gleaned from this part if you are familiar with ETFs already). The main component of the book is a series of 1 page report for each ETF providing data on performance, style, holdings, and their analysts "take" on that ETF, among other data. The third part provides detailed tables on past performance of these ETFs and provides rankings. The book also includes a 2 week research "pass" to their ETF website.
Overall, an excellent reference source for ETFs for investors. Those familiar with their fund reports, know that Morningstar does not issue Buy/Sell reccomendations per se. (their paid stock and fund investor newsletter does that to an extent). For the price, an excellent resource. If you are considering investing "substantial" sums into mutual funds, ETFs may be a better choice, and this book should be where you begin and end your research.
