A unique book for a unique work of art..........2000-06-08
In 1992, British artist, Rachel Whiteread, began the ground work for one of the most unique artistic works produced over the last 20 years. Her vision, a concrete casting of the interior of a building, a ghost of the structure. The book is a detail the process and an analysis of the work."House" helped Whiteread win the 1993 Turner Prize. Sadly, the piece was destroyed in January of 1994. A book for the student of contemporary art or the fan of Rachel Whiteread. Well worth the price.

Since the demise of urban renewal in the early 1970s, the politics of large-scale public investment in and around major American cities has received little scholarly attention. In Mega-Projects, Alan Altshuler and David Luberoff analyze the unprecedented wave of large-scale (mega-) public investments that occurred in American cities during the 1950s and 1960s; the social upheavals they triggered, which derailed large numbers of projects during the late 1960s and early 1970s; and the political impulses that have shaped a new generation of urban mega-projects in the decades since. They also appraise the most important consequences of policy shifts over this half-century and draw out common themes from the rich variety of programmatic and project developments that they chronicle.
The authors integrate narratives of national as well as state and local policymaking, and of mobilization by (mainly local) project advocates, with a profound examination of how well leading theories of urban politics explain the observed realities. The specific cases they analyze include a wide mix of transportation and downtown revitalization projects, drawn from numerous regions—most notably Boston, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Portland, and Seattle. While their original research focuses on highway, airport, and rail transit programs and projects, they draw as well on the work of others to analyze the politics of public investment in urban renewal, downtown retailing, convention centers, and professional sports facilities.
In comparing their findings with leading theories of urban and American politics, Altshuler and Luberoff arrive at some surprising findings about which perform best and also reveal some important gaps in the literature as a whole. In a concluding chapter, they examine the potential effects of new fiscal pressures, business mobilization to relax environmental constraints, and security concerns in the wake of September 11. And they make clear their own views about how best to achieve a balance between developmental, environmental, and democratic values in public investment decisionmaking.

Everybody knows about the independent film movement of the 70's and 80's, but what about the people trying to revolutionize television? They're all right here -- the Videofreex, TVTV, et al, people making provocative, innovative video long before Michael Moore or the clowns on MTV. A primer for frustrating film-school students who want to shake things up.

Great for anyone interested in radical television, especially film and TV students who don't want to spend the rest of their lives churning out bad sitcoms. A must-read for the DV generation.

Review of Rachmaninoff - Composer Pianist Conductor.......2000-04-03
The book is titled Rachmaninoff - Composer, Pianist, Conductor and is divided into sections which study each of these areas in the great composer's career. Rachmaninoff had many talents and at various times in his life pursued all of them. Composing was his first love, but the disasterous premier of his first symphony almost wrecked that career. After recovering from depression and regaining his skills, Rachmaninoff made a name for himself as a conductor. Then chased out of Russia by the revolution, he became a concert pianist to make a living and earned world-wide fame as an interpretor.
Barrrie Martyn's book is definitive in delving into these three lives particularly the section on the composer. All of Rachmaninoff's works are discussed in great detail with musical examples. The appendix contains his entire discography as well as all the works conducted and concerts given. No Rachmaninoff fan or music historian should be without this book.

This second edition features new material including a recently rediscovered exhibition in Indianapolis, first-hand accounts from San Francisco, Little Rock and Pittsburgh, several games, plus photos and artifacts as well as corrections.
It's is a treasure trove for every Fischer fan.

Very enjoyable read for me . . ........2006-07-28
This book is about Bobby Fischer's 1964 cross country trip in 1964, playing simuls against large crowds. Lots of newspaper clippings from the various cities, and personal stories from some of the contestants. I think Bobby won 94% of his games, averaging only about six seconds a move, while his opposition had much more time to study their position. Still, it is appearing that the only ones to draw or beat him were the top players from their respective States, and even the majority of those players went down.
It is such a fun book though - because it has the annotated games from many underdogs who won their games. The "Davids" who slew Goliath - and never let their friends forget about it. Realize that by 1964, Fischer had already won the U.S. Championship many times before going on this fund raising exhibition tour.
Finally, this is a good book because it shows some unusual lines - tricks that could acutually come up one day in one's chess career. It helps you see different approaches - than the extablished main lines - that resulted in in defeat, and victory.

Just a bunch of forms and no written advice.......2007-03-26
If you are a seasoned veteran with a number of investment properties, then this book might be useful for adding some forms that might cover you in the event of some circumstance. However, the book is not for the beginner looking to get into investment property. While there are many forms, I would probably guess that they should still be looked at by a legal professional before you use them.
No CD Included Hard Copy Only.......2006-12-11
The content of this book is excellent. However it should also include an electronic copy. I tore out each page (they are perforated) and put it in a three ring binder. If you attempt to photocopy the pages you'll need white-out because on the bottom of each page is the number and title of the chapter--very annoying and time consuming. The last page of the book offers you the ability to buy the electronic copy for "half the price" for $49.50. My advice is to skip this book and just buy the e-copy.

The forms are useless since when you copy them they contain the page numbers and chapter title from which you obtained them from. You can obtain better "legal" forms via softcopy methods(CD-ROM) internet so don't waste your time(trying to doctor the copies) and money on this book.. I will provide you mine for free.
