      Book Description

Published for the first time in English in 1994 as Burning Passions, Cherchi Usai's groundbreaking guide to silent film studies has become the indispensable textbook for scholars, researchers, and archivists. This much-awaited sequel to the first edition has been extensively rewritten and updated in order to reflect the spectacular development witnessed by the discipline in the past few years. In addition, two new chapters have been added for this edition. The first is an extensive analysis of color technology and aesthetics, from hand-coloring to the dawn of Technicolor. The second is a detailed account of how silent films are saved from destruction, restored, and made accessible by film archives. A number of new illustrations, tables, bibliographical references and historical sources add additional value to this fundamental survey of the first thirty years in the history of the moving image.

5 out of 5 stars A feast for the silent film fan.......2002-04-30

If you have ever wondered what a film archivist does, this book is for you. If you are really serious about your passion for silent films, this book is for you. Mr Usai's concise book is packed full of research tips. There are over 50 illustrations, many in color, of all kinds of different early film frames (70mm, 35mm, 9.5mm, 28mm) plus early color processes, even early 3-D frames. He explains how the early color processes worked and how early films were assembled. He goes into great detail on how that silent film that you may watch today may be drastically altered from the original in the early 1900s. And he explains the many frustrating problems that silent film archivists encounter. He explains the pitfalls of compiling filmographies, and how some printed sources are valuable and others are worthless. If you are just becoming interested in silent films, this book will be too much for you. But if you are really interested in the "nuts and bolts" of archive work, or the detective work that we do to study silent cinema, then you won't be able to put this book down!

Has it come to this? In a typical statement, the authors write that in Elizabethan England a certain kind of marriage contract made for the future "became permanently, legally binding if the couple then consummated the marriage (i.e. had sex)" (p. 50). Hopkins and Steggle both teach at universities in the UK, and so I fear that it is primarily British students who, the authors believe, need a gloss on the consummation of a marriage. Well, American students probably can't be far behind. I'm not sure whether this book is dumbed down or accurately targeted at a dumb audience.

5 out of 5 stars Modern British culture(s) clearly explained.......2001-06-16

This is a welcome addition to the existing literature on the complexity of cultural life in Britain today. I liked the book for several reasons. First, it does what it says, and provides a well-written and comprehensible introduction to widely studied subject areas. Second, it's clear, well-written and objective. Third, it puts the material in a clear historical context. The students like it too, especially the chapters on literature, film and popular music.

In my opinion, there's no other text that is so well-researched and which manages to generate interest in its subject matter; the author breathes life into his subjects and convinces the reader to go out and learn more about them. This is an interesting, useful and practical addition to the library of any student/teacher of modern British culture and the arts.

        4 out of 5 stars Britwatch well-done!.......2001-02-08

Not many books succeed in covering the cultural panorama of modern Britain in such a concise, precise and well-informed way. I found the information clear and detailed, but always interesting and accessible. Not many other books in the field manage to guide the reader in such a way, and either end up being dense and unreadable or else simple and patronising. Christopher's book does neither and should be a useful text for anyone with an interest in modern British cultural life, particularly students of British studies, or like me, of language and literature.

I'd like to have seen more pictures, and more activities, perhaps based around authentic texts. Apart from that, it's a useful addition to any student's reading list, and I can warmly recommend it.

From Kingsley Amis to Salman Rushdie, British Culture of the Postwar is an ideal starting point for those studying cultural developments in Britain during this period. Chapters on individual people and art forms give a clear and concise overview of the progression of different genres. They also discuss the wider issues of Britain's relationships with America and Europe, and the idea of Englishness.

Each section is introduced with a short discussion of the major historical events of the period. Read as a whole British Culture of the Postwar will give students a comprehensive introduction to this turbulent and exciting period, and a greater understanding of the cultural production arising from it.

                Amazon.com

One of the fun things about Amazon.com is that you can happen on fascinating books that you'd likely never find in a local bookstore. From Catholic to Protestant is a good example. Henry VIII may have been at the vortex of the transition from Catholicism to Protestantism in England, but Doreen Rosman shows what it meant to ordinary people--what their daily customs and beliefs were before and after the momentous change. You may be surprised to see how pantheistic the people were before, and how Protestantism tended to secularize life. A short, clearly worded account that is well worth reading.

                  Book Description

From its earliest days, the cinema has enjoyed a special kinship with the railroad, a mutual attraction based on similar ways of handling speed, visual perception, and the promise of a journey. Parallel Tracks is the first book to explore and explain this relationship in both historical and theoretical terms, blending film scholarship with railroad history. Describing the train as a mechanical double for the cinema, Lynne Kirby gives her romantic topic a compelling twist. She views the railroad/cinema romance in light of the technological and cultural instability underlying modernity and presents the railroad and cinema as complementary experiences that shaped the modern world and its subjects—the passengers and spectators who traveled through that world.
In wide-ranging and provocative analyses of dozens of silent films—icons of film history like The General and The Great Train Robbery as well as many that are rarely discussed—Kirby examines how trains and rail travel embodied concepts of spectatorship and mobility grounded in imperialism and the social, sexual, and racial divisions of modern Western culture. This analysis at the same time provides a detailed and largely unexamined history of the railroad in silent filmmaking. Kirby also devotes special attention to the similar ways in which the railroad and cinema structured the roles of men and women. As she demonstrates, these representations have had profound implications for the articulation of gender in our culture, a culture in some sense based on the machine as embodied by the train and the camera/projector.
Ultimately, this book reveals the profound and parallel impact that the railroad and the cinema have had on Western society and modern urban industrial culture. Parallel Tracks will be eagerly awaited by those involved in cinema studies, American studies, feminist theory, and the cultural study of modernity.

5 out of 5 stars A provocative and entertaining journey of trains and film........1997-12-04

Readers interested in the relationship between railroad and cinema should not look beyond Parallel Tracks, Lynne Kirby's extremely entertaining and insightful historical coverage of the how the train can be seen as a precursor to cinema. Conceptions of spectatorship, travel and suggestibililty normally associated with cinematic viewing practices are forcefully argued as inherent properties of how a passenger experiences rail travel. Perhaps a fault of the book is that it ends with the birth of sound cinema, when the whistle of the incoming train signified a new stage in cinematic representations of rail journeys, gender and identity. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in classic American silent film, westerns and rail thrillers, as well as those interested in how the railroad continues to impact on the triad of cinema, identity and modernity.

                        Book Description

                        A journey into peril.

Cyrsania, high priestess of the Temple of Paladine, is blind to the beauty of the world but not to the joy of her faith. Lately, though, her communion with the god of light has become distant. Now a mysterious stone has come into her possession. Its power compels her to undertake a merilous quest, accompanied by a strange band of companions.

Together they endure the burning heat of Kyrnn's most violet summer as they struggle toward their destination: the Temple at Neraka.

If they reach it, their world will be transformed forever.

This novel, set in the time of the Chaos War, brings to life the story of Crysania, a Revered Daughter of Paladine, and Dalamar, the dark elf.

Serious and religious, this story tells about the Cleric of Paladin Crysania. Crysania is very devoted to her god, so when she find out that he may be in trouble, at the suggestion of Dalamar the Dark Elf, she goes on a quest to find the five dragon stones - magical stones that allow one to communicate with a god (among other things). Two of these stones appeared to Dalamar, and the last three are in a place so terrible it is not in her liking to go there. But this blind Cleric will do almost anything to save her god and bring him back to her.

If you're an avid Dragonlance fan, this is a good read, but otherwise I recommend pursuing better Dragonlance books (anything by M. Weis and T. Hickman, Douglas Niles, D. Perrin, or Michael Williams)

This book is so,well there are no words to describe it but i could say stupid,crappy,dumb....I didn't read the whole thing (and i'm glad because i'm going to return it.) just the ending and its really stupid. Whoever likes Crysania/Raistlin (i'm one of them) DON'T read this book its a real dissapiontment, as for people who don't they'll enjoy it i'm sure. But i think that all dragonlance fans probably do like them so i would reccommed everyone not to read it. When i was buying this book i read a few reviews and some of them said its stupid and that they wasted their money i didn't believe them but now i wholeheartedly agree with them...... I wish i never read the ending and i deeply regret buying it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Hella Good.......2002-12-22

I have not read the "Legends" or "Chronicles" series, so I was kinda concerned when I picked this one up.
I was not let down. I have read other works by Nancy Berberick, .... So this one had me worried. But I loved it. It really brought out how crysania was blessed by Paladine, and what she was able to see, despite her being blind.

I really liked "Tandar", and the relationship she was able to have with him, though I think the ending was a bit rushed, still, I found this book a page turner, I looked forward to reading it everyday.
I also really got into how much Valin loved Crysania, despite her past, despite her dealings with Dalamar, who before this book I had never heard of, but, now I will be reading Both Legends, and Chronicles. This book took the #2 alltime favorite book spot of mine, In short, Read this book!

                        3 out of 5 stars Almost worth 4 stars!!.......2002-10-08

While this book is mainly about Crysania, Dalamar steals the spotlight. Their light sparring is intriguing & fun. There other characters are interesting too. I just feel there was that missing something that could've made it better.

                        4 out of 5 stars Suprisingly entertaining.......2002-05-19

I wasn't too sure about this book when I first started it. I wasnt going to read it cause it got some bad reviews on here and on other pages. I even thought this book would be sort of a "chick flick", if you will excuse the cliche. But as I read this book, I actually found myself liking it, and not being able to put it down.

The book starts out a little slow. It takes place during the War against Chaos, during the same time as "Dragons of Summer Flame" was set. Crysania decides to embark on a quest to find out why the gods are so distant lately. She must find some powerful artifacts in order to do this. She is accompanied by a group of adventurers that pledge to keep her safe on her journey. Also, Dalamar plays a part in this story. He is the one that shows Crysania what must be done in order for her to reach her goals. He also has his hands in other things in this story, but I won't spoil it. Read and find out.

While some of the chapters in this book might not have been neccessary. This books maintains a smooth and easy read all the way though. The thing that I found most entertaining was the way the authors brought together actual dialogue from "Dragons of Summer Flame" and fit them into this book just so you would know where it takes place in respect to that book. I also like the way the authors brought in Crysania's white tiger, Tandar. We learn about how she came to know the tiger, and how the tiger affects her day to day life.

The story itself is a little cheesy. But the authors do a good job explaining Crysania's fears with the coming of the War of Chaos. They also do a good job explaining what a sightless person feels and the way they interact with day to day life. The characters aren't very well rounded, and the story seems a little rushed, but all in all this book is pretty good. It is definately worth the read if you want to learn a little more about Crysania after her appearence in the "Legends Trilogy". While this book doesn't have as much action as some other Dragonlance books, I still feel that it is worth the read.

This book was recommended to us by a couple of professors at University of Toledo for its section on territory management. I had initially passed the book by, because the title didn't grab me. The book is very good, even for experienced sales reps. I'd recommend it to any sales rep, novice or experienced.

I was a little hesitant about purchasing this book. I feared it would be one more fluffy time management book. But Mr Kahle has clearly walked the salesmans walk which lends great crediblity. I found his point of view and suggestions to be refreshingly candid and hands-on. One of my favorite passages in the book reads:
"You can choose not to do this. You can be like most of the mediocre salespeople in the world. You can allow yourself to become reactive... or you can choose to work far more effetively by implementing the disciplines of thinking about it before you do it, and thinking about it in the right way. It's a free country. It's your choice."

I am very glad I bought the book and will use it as a reference for motivating my team on a regular basis.

Dave Kahle adapts many now common time management processes for the specific use of salespeople in the field. His underlying assumption is that it is much more difficult for outside salespeople to apply the usual techniques, since their lives are so filled with uncertainty. Plus salespeople tend to be action-oriented, so they don't commonly want to spend time planning or setting up systems. But, Kahle argues, such organization is critical to success in sales. While Kahle claims that most time management principles and tactics "totally miss the unique challenges of the field salesperson," the material he covers in the book sounds very familiar. It echoes many other books about goal setting, problem solving, decision making and effective selling. We find that while this may be a helpful review of fairly common material in the guise of time management, the information is hardly unique - although its focus on salespeople's needs may give it additional value for them.
