This book offers an entirely new assessment of the genre of Japanese paintings and prints today known as shunga. Recent changes in Japanese law have at last enabled erotic images to be published without fear of prosecution, and many picture books have since appeared in Japan. There has, however, been very little attempt to situate the imagery within the contexts of sexuality, gender or power. Questions of aesthetics, and of whether shunga deserve a place in the official history of Japanese art, have dominated, and the question of the use of these images has been avoided. Timon Screech seeks to re-establish shunga in its proper historical contexts of culture and creativity.Sex and the Floating World opens up for us the strange world of sexual fantasy in the Edo culture of eighteenth-century Japan, and investigates the tensions in class and gender of those who made – and made use of – shunga.

What a fun read........2005-02-04
Can a scholarly work be a fun read? Definitely. Screech advances some rather different thoughts on not only shunga but ukioyo-e prints in general that should leave you thinking. Yet, as firm as Screech's views are and as consistently as he advances them throughout the book, they do not overbear. Thinking through his points and exploring the images offered takes on into new and intriguing territory. It is a fun trip.
The writing suffers from some occasionally very tortured passages. The lack of an index and any sort of cross referencing of the illustrations is a significant detraction. Neither of these is enough to counsel against the book, but are frustrating on occassion.
a provocative book from a creative scholar..........2001-06-04
Vast numbers of people are already familiar with "shunga," the Edo-period erotic art that is the subject of Timon Screech's "Sex and the Floating World." Few readers, however, will have focused on learning about the context in which this erotic art was produced. Moreover, some of Screech's findings will undoubtedly come as a surprise. Chief among the book's arguments is that the culture of urban Edo which produced the "shunga" was not one of "laxity and freedom, sexual or other." Rather, Screech says, the art served the needs of "auto-eroticism" for a city (Edo, now Tokyo) that, because of political requirements, was overwhelmingly populated by males who had been separated from their families and denied access to females.
Screech's book stands in stark contrast to the many previous volumes on "shunga" that have concentrated on reproducing the erotic prints, and the total space devoted to visual images is rather limited. Still many readers will find this book rewarding, and however iconoclastic some of the findings may be no serious student of Japanese art or early modern history will want to be without it.

This book explains all facets of managing rental dwellings or farmland and the tax implications that go along with it. The book is easy to read, easy to index, and includes lots of good examples of things like depreciation schedules or tax return schedules. If you are thinking about buying rental real estate, or already own rental real estate, this book will easily pay for itself with all of the legal tips it provides on minimizing your tax bill. It's a very handy reference for those just starting out with rental properties. Some of the example spreadsheets look a little dated, but are easy to replicate on modern spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel for example).
Clear and Useful Advice.......2002-05-31
I purchased this book several years ago after I purchased a 10-unit apartment building which I subsequently managed myself. I also do my own taxes. I found the book to be in invaluable resource guide. The ONLY book of it's kind (I probably have 20 on my shelf). Holmes shares his experience with IRS audits of property owners. He knows the tax code inside and out and the best ways a property owner can utilize it to their advantage (legally and above board, no slick marketing, just examples of what works).
Holmes skips the hype that almost every real estate investing book seems to love pitching. He has invested in real estate himself and has done taxes for hundreds of customers. He shares specific information about each form, how the IRS views the information (ie tips on avoiding an audit) and gives very detailed examples of Schedule E, Depreciation calculation, vacation homes and other topics.
There's an excellent section on 1031 exchange which I'm re-reading. He answers questions about state taxation issues and gives a detailed example of how California's aggressive tax stance on property sold within it's borders can be avoided by using a 1031 exchange into another state. This chapter gives a step by step calculation of how to calculate the deferred capital gain in an exchange, something I looked for on the web to no avail. It's also not in the IRC.
This book continues to provide me with answers I can't seem to locate anywhere else. A must purchase for small rental real estate property owners.

This is a great, great book!.......2007-08-04
I got this, and read it over a couple of days just recently. It is a book written by an old friend of Sting's, with the first half being mostly about their childhood days at a catholic school, and the second half being about their exploits in later years.
It is unbelievably funny, and entertaining! You can really tell that they've had fun together and love one another. Lots of good hearted poking fun at Stingo. Jim has a wonderful way of telling a story. Makes you feel like he'd tell the story the same way to a group of friends in the living room or something. The book made me laugh throughout, as well as think about some things in my own life. If you love Sting this will give you even more of a look at him and more appreciation for who he is. I would think, though, that even a person who didn't know about Sting would really have fun reading this book. Good job, Berryman.
The real Sting?.......2007-03-23
I read this little book as soon it arrived to me (very quickly, thanks Amazon!). I was curious because I heard a lot about it but never found it in Italy, where I live. I think it is a must for all Sting's fans, because Berryman write about his friend Sting, not at all the star Sting. There are frankly hilarious pages, above all a scene about a fool roundabout in a classroom following a teacher who was following Sting, who was... ok, read it! I laughed to tears. Just imagine a Woodehouse book, and substitute Jeeves and Bertie with Sting and Jim and you'll have the right picture!
A very different kind of biography.......2007-01-27
James Berryman's book is (much) less a biography of Sting than a humorous tale of life in Catholic school in England, where he happened to be friends with the-boy-who-would-be-Sting. This is not a criticism of the volume, though readers looking for deep insight and more detailed information on Sting's early years would do better to read the man's own memoirs, "Broken Music". Berryman's book instead takes an episodic approach to the misadventures of the boys of St. Cuthberts, from the first day of school when he first met on Gordon Sumner to their graduation and beyond.
School days take up about three-quarters of the book, the remained covering the years that followed and occasional meetings with Sting as his star began to rise. It's a fun story that does present a decidedly more down-to-earth view of Sting than we've read or seen elsewhere, even if afterwards one does wonder if the whole book hadn't just been a cheap ploy to cash in on Barryman's lifelong friendship with a celebrity.
Nevertheless, it is entertaining and probably worth a read by any dedicated Sting fan, as well as those interested in a humorous read about growing up in 1960s Newcastle.
Great for Sting fans, good for others!.......2005-08-10
This book is written by one of Sting's personal friends. James Berryman shares his impressions and relationship with Sting from the first day of grammer school through the present. It is a fast read, great for Sting fans but also a good book just for the stories James Berryman tells about his life growing up.

This book works for every kid, and adults enjoy playing the games, too! I have never seen a child try a Number Jugglers game without getting enthusiastic about math. It must be the feeling of success that comes with getting it right in Number Jugglers.
Whatever it is, Ruth Alexander has developed a truly great approach to math learning that works. And it's enjoyable enough to have at home, too. It has all the right elements of game play--adjustable for many age and skill levels, and for single or multiple users.

I was initially skeptical when this book was recommended by a coworker. But wow! The two most outstanding points are:
1.The change management insights to be gained from the real-life case studies. It's reassuring to know you're not alone in facing these challenges.
2. The dignostic tools are very helpful in identifying similar issues to be resolved in my company. Great not to be "insulted" by cookie-cutter solutions.
This is information and guidance that I can put to work immediately. Would recommend to any executive currently facing change management issues.
