Book Description
The Union of Women Painters and Sculptors was founded in Paris in 1881 to represent the interests of women artists and to facilitate the exhibition of their work. This lively and informative book traces the history of the first fifteen years of the organization and places it in the context of the Paris art world and the development of feminism in the late nineteenth century. Reversing conventional accounts of the Paris art world during this period, Tamar Garb offers a new picture from the point of view of a group of women who were marginalized by its dominant institutions.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book on 19th century intitutional history.......2000-04-12
Garb does an excellent job of placing art produced by female artists within the context of the institutional history of the Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs. She explains how this organization relates to the work women artists produced and that the Union provided a much needed exhibition venue for women artists. Especially interesting is Garb's work on female nudes that women exhibited in the Salon des Femmes and the types of nudes that women artists produced for this specific context.

A Very Authentic Book.......2005-03-04
This is a nicely readable nonfiction book on Mayan weaving. It is a nice, more focused alternative to the broader subjects of the Mayans in general, which tend to be too wordy and detailed for some young readers. Color photos of Mayan girls and women in traditional garb are the best thing about the book. If you go to Guatemala, this is exactly what you will see!

Little in the way of examples.......2004-12-13
OK - I'm totally new to web design, and that is why I thought a 'Dummies' book would be an appropriate start (I am a seasoned programmer, though, so I didn't expect this to be especially difficult). I do have a very basic website up and running.
I haven't gotten anywhere near all the way through the book, and already I've ordered a couple others, because it seems like I'm not getting a lot out of this. Maybe if a person already had some experience with earlier Dreamweaver products it might go easier.
My biggest problem so far is that it seems to me more of an item by item description of the myriad features - with little detail with regard to what they're for and how to use them. An early question for me was why and when to use tables versus frames versus layers for page design, and so far I have not found such info in this book. I've had to look elsewhere.
I learn best by following a detailed sample project from start to finish. There is as of yet no sample to work with here. There are lots of screen shots, but they rarely seem to add much knowledge, and I often spend a lot of time trying to figure out how that screen was even achieved, and what the authors are trying to tell me.
I've just started the ColdFusion section of the Dreamweaver sub-book, and I understand the very basics of what ColdFusion is. But the text is not leading me through an explanation. The screen shots are just comparing previous versions to the MX version, and the text is talking about things like "When you have a ColdFusion page open", but not how to open a ColdFusion page.
I see the book has gotten some good reviews, and the bad reviews seem to be written by experienced web developers who think the book is too shallow. Perhaps my brain just works differently, but I wanted something that would walk me through a project, showing me things on the way. Not just a overview of the features, without an entry-level discussion of what they're for and how to use them.
As I said, I do much better with a walk-through of a project when I'm a newbie. Examples, not just expanded descriptions of individual features. I don't expect discussion of the more advanced features, that would require more focused texts. What I did want was to be hand-held through the basics of creating a website.
I would not recommend this book, and I doubt I'll finish it. I'll probably just go back to the help files that came with Studio, and hope that my next book actually has sample projects to follow.
Is there a worse book on MX?.......2004-09-08
I've bought dozens of books over the years for all Macromedia and Adobe products and this one is probably the worst. It's like a dictionary that doesn't have the word you're looking up but - sure enough - the word "chair" is in there.
I have yet to find anything I need in this waste of shelf space. It does, however, tell you that File > New creates a new document.
Useful Book; A Little Too Much for Dummies.......2004-05-28
Macromedia Studio MX All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is definately a value-packed, thick, useful book. There is good reference material and getting-started info on Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, Freehand 10, Macromedia Vlash MX, & Cold Fusion MX along with two sections on design basics and integration of studio components.
As I said, with such a breadth of information the book is definately a bargain. However, that advantage is also the book's primary downfall I feel. It says 7 books in one, but if that is true it is SEVEN SHORT BOOKS. Each book is definately not the standard "For Dummies" length. This lends itself to make it 7 abridged-sized books. The adbridgement comes by removing all of the discussion on the more advanced features of the program. Unfortunately the extreme basics are also belabored.
All of that means that the book will be useful to help you get started in Macromedia Studio, but after you have a little more than a few hours of experience in the software suite you will find the book increasingly useless. Because the features which a mildly seasoned user will find difficult to master are not covered, this book is not such a great value if the purchaser already has mild to moderate background experience with MX software.
So with that review in mind take it or leave according to your lot. If you are new to Macromedia Studio MX and want some help for the first month or so getting up and running, this is a great resource. But if you have already pushed through the growing pains of climbing the learning curve, you may want to pass on this one for a more advanced text.
Great book for Beginners.......2004-04-07
Great for those new to Macromedia Studio. This book will teach you all the basics to get up and running in minimal time. After this book you will be ready to explore any portion of Studio MX in greater depth as you will have a good grounding in the basics. Well worth the price of admission.
Getting started...and beyond?.......2003-08-03
Yip, worth the pennies you're going to spend on it. It has a no-nonsense approach and gets you up and running in no time at all. It doesn't include the typical html-this-and-html-that intro chapters (that are included in virtually all the other web development-related books) and jumps away with the cardinals immediately.
It is obviously not a topical alpha-to-omega subject matter type of book - for this buy separate titles specialising in the Macromedia component you're interested in.
But if you are a hit-the-ground-running type of being, this will show you how all the Macromedia components integrate with each other and beyond. The book is definitely worth the odd 8550 square millimeters (footprint that is!) on your bookshelf. Enjoy!

Not enough information.......2004-11-11
You would be better off buying a book about a specific Macromedia application rather than trying to save money with this "all-in-one". There is simply not enough information in order to explain the concepts well enough. This book explains something once and then goes on to the next topic. I would compare it more to the Help section than a tutorial.
Instead, I would recommend the SAMS Teach yourself Flash in 24 hours - it is more comprehensive and easier to follow. If you think you are getting a steal with all 7 books for the price of one, don't buy this book.

7 books in 1.......2003-12-14
I just bought Macromedia Studio MX 2004. Yet, all I got was a CD and a good luck. Well I could root around trying to use the product, get a book with insight on how to handle the product efficiently. There are many good books on each item in the Studio. If you buy them individually the price is almost seven times the price of this book. Then you have to compare and contrast to integrate the information.
This book brings all the advantages of the other Dummies books. There are clear examples and pictures on what the screen should look like. The added plus is that this book shows how to integrate all the individual products in the studio. There s a good introduction, contents, index and tabbed pages so you can see where one sections stops and the next begins.
There is no CD. However the advantage is that there no trial programs to interfere with the real product. I have tried a few of the items and I am pleased with the results.

The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records
ASIN: 0195086295 |
Book Description
Music industry legend Bob Thiele will never forget the first time he heard a demo tape from a group of unknowns from New Mexico billed as Buddy Holly and the Crickets. "I was never as confident in my life anything would be a hit record as I was about 'That'll Be the Day'," remembers the record
executive and producer who also worked with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jackie Wilson, Henry Mancini, and a constellation of other greats on some of their most memorable recordings. But Thiele's employers at Coral Records wouldn't touch Holly and his "hillbilly garbage," and
neither would any of the big major labels. Finally Thiele convinced the powers that be at Coral that they just had to release "That'll Be the Day," if only to keep him happy. The result was a monster hit that launched Holly's career and stayed on the charts for half a year.
The discovery of Buddy Holly is just one of the riveting stories Thiele has to tell in What a Wonderful World, a rollicking, no-holds-barred account of an unforgettable life in music, as told to Thiele's friend and collaborator Bob Golden. Over a still-ongoing career spanning six decades, Thiele
has been a musician, dance band leader, publisher of one of the first jazz magazines in the world, a record producer, a DJ, a record label owner (several times), an A & R man, and a songwriter. Indeed, Thiele's songwriting credits include the beloved Armstrong classic from which this book takes its
title. From his precocious adolescence in Queens, where he began hosting his first radio jazz show at the tender age of 14, Thiele's career has been driven and defined by a genuine love and respect for great music. He tells how he discovered Jackie Wilson, jazz immortal Erroll Garner, Buddy Holly,
and others, and takes readers behind-the-scenes to legendary recording sessions with Ellington, Armstrong, John Coltrane, Teresa Brewer (Thiele's wife of 26 years), Jack Kerouac, Steve Allen, the McGuire Sisters, Pat Boone, Frankie Laine, and many other artists. Thiele captures the free-wheeling,
anything-could-happen-and-usually-did atmosphere of the jazz and pop recording worlds of decades gone by, and shares uproarious recollections of the heavy-hitting movers and shakers he has locked horns with over the years. Equally important, as an enduring and inventive force in American music,
Thiele offers candid and perceptive observations on the increasing corporatization of the business he loves.
A fascinating journey from the days before rock 'n' roll to today, What a Wonderful World could only have been written by a true insider's insider. It will delight music lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
TOP-FLIGHT BOOK ABOUT THE RECORD BUSINESS.......1999-09-07
Bob Thiele's career makes for very entertaining reading. Ranging from the great jazz artists of the 1940's to rock & rollers like Buddy Holly, Bob played a large part in many notable careers. I was especially touched by the love story of Bob and singer Teresa Brewer --- who eventually became Mrs. Thiele --- and thoroughly fascinated by the incredible behind the scenes machinations (sometimes funny, sometimes deadly), of the music business. Most particularly the attempts by mobsters to take control of popular singer Alan Dale, and Dale's stubborn refusal to submit. Thiele claims that this cost Dale his career, and almost his life. A fascinating book from one of show business' "good guys".

Customer Reviews:
Stop Watch Fun.......2007-01-16
These are good activities for kids when a "time filler" is needed. Each activity is fun, educational and sometimes physical. Kids love the competition.
Stop! the Watch.......2007-01-04
ISBN 1878257528 - A 1993 recipient of the Parents' Choice Award. The first reader review of this book, suggesting it's perfect for long car rides should probably be disregarded. The Events are almost all too physical to do in a car!
Funny - and surprisingly challenging - events to compete in, 73 in all, make for great it's-too-cold-outside or rainy day entertainment. Parents may well find themselves losing to the kids, without losing on purpose, because these are not events most people will have spent any time practicing. From Floss Writing to the One Foot Marathon, everyone will find their niche and have fun doing it!
If you happen to get a copy that doesn't have a stopwatch, there is a free catalog available from Klutz listed on the last page of the book. You can order a watch, other books from Klutz and lots of other fun stuff.
Tons of fun for kids and adults!.......2003-04-05
I have always loved any book from KLUTZ, always entertaining and tons of fun for both kids and adults! "Stop! the Watch: A Book of Everyday, Ordinary, Anybody Olympics" has lots of fun activities to do with a friend. The pictures are hilarious to look at and the instructions are easy to follow. The stop watch (batteries included) that comes with the book is easy to handle and easy to use.
Do you think you can set a world's record? Well, let's see! The book includes 73 events you can do, separated into four categories:
*Solo Events
*Meet the Clock Solo Events
*Two-Person Team Events
*All-Day Events
Entertainingly fun, here are a few examples of the kind of crazy activities you might try your hand at beating the world record of:
*Sing "Happy Birthday" to Rumpelstiltskin five times. Has to be loud, completely understandable and bear some resemblance to music.*
World Record 5.81 seconds
*Count by 6s until 12 seconds have elapsed. Exactly.*
*Sing the first verse of "Jingle Bells", alternating each word between partners.*
World Record 5.38 seconds
Fun, creative, active and even educational!.......2002-02-26
This book is really great. It comes with a sturdy stopwatch that you use to time yourself.
The various suggestions for "everyday Olympics" are ordinary to unusual. This is to be done with a friend.
The first one is - get this - timing how fast you can start and stop the stopwatch! Write the word with "banana" with dental floss as quickly as you can (and legibly), putting your jackets on backwards and zipping them up. flip a coin until you get 8 heads or tails in a row, etc.
Some of these are really fun and a lot of them are active.
My kids really like this book.
Worth every penny........1999-08-10
This book is a must on long car rides with children. It's clever and inspires children to be creative.

Customer Reviews:
Great for the Entepreneur.......2007-08-13
This book is exactly what the title describes itself as: a theory and method of creating a one page proposal. It's best suited for the entepreneur pitching venture capitalists. I got some ideas from it, but wasn't as helpful as I'd hoped for what I needed. One thing I'd have liked would have been a job aid/chart with the section titles and brief highlight of what to include.
Cut through the clutter. Get you proposal noticed and read........2007-08-07
It took just 2 hours hours to read. The instructions are simple (not simplistic) and easy to follow. The prescription will help you get your thinking clear. The one pager will get your message read and noticed. Decision makers - who are normally inundated with unstructured requests for their attention and support - will appreciate the format.
A range of examples show you how the concept has worked for the author and others.
A perfect solution .......2007-03-02
I stumbled upon this at the Chicago Public Library. After reading it and returning it I didn't think much of it. For some reason, however, it stuck with me.
After Amazon delivered it I remembered why it stuck with me: the concept is perfect for putting down just the parts of an idea or project you need to remember and those you need to convey. It is perfect in its simplicity.
I use this format extensively and find that it helps both me and the reader stay focused on the key points. I highly recommend both the method and the book. This, Tom Sant's Persuasive Business Proposals and Powerful Proposals by David G. Pugh and Terry R. Bacon may be the only books on proposal anyone needs!
Professional Proposals in One Concise Page!.......2006-12-12
Well, I'm done writing 10-15 page proposals that are just glanced thru. The One-Page Proposal provides a methodology to concisely present your complete proposal on one page. It saves you time in the proposal process and provides your potential client with a very focused proposal. I rate this one a winner and am now using this exclusively for client proposals. It works and it saves time!
The 1-page concept is good, but this book is not so good..........2006-11-10
...unless you have very little business writing experience. The 1-page concept is valid, but this book and its examples are unimpressive (and sometimes dull, naive and self congratulating). Still, it might be worth a quick read for some of you, which is why I'll give it 3 stars. Note: I probably should have given it 2 stars since some of these other reviews are so over the top positive that to me they are not credible (I almost think they were written by shills).
