Janet Arnold for the 1920s.......2004-03-30
Similar to the Janet Arnold _Patterns of Fashion_ series, this book presents scaled patterns for all sorts of garments from the 1920s. Patterns include dresses, blouses, skirts, underwear, lingerie, etc. Useful if you know understand pattern drafting for creating period garments, or if you're interested in garment patterning of the 1920s. I especially liked that it focuses on more everyday wear, rather than couture garments.
Practical history.......2000-09-08
This book provides patterns and (very) basic instructions for constructing authentic fashions of the 1920's, made using original everyday garments. The patterns are on regular book pages printed on a grid. To use them one can either draw them out on bigger grid paper, or do what I did and take them to a copy center and blow them up on the oversize copier. This book is not for the novice sewer, but for someone with experience who wants a truly authentic 1920's look, you can't do better.

Simplicity.......2005-09-09
This is a book that I continously recommend to people who like literature. The author does a superb job in showing how everything can be very simple if people abandon their prejudices and preconcieved notions of "how things should be." People create most of their problems themselves - because they cannot accept the fact that there is an alternative. And Roche exposes this brilliantly. The effect is coming not only from the plot of the story (a love tirangle), but also from the incredible simplicity of his writing style. If I remember correct, the author went through numerous revisions until he eliminated all unnecessary words. The only regret that I have is that I don't read French.
Jules and Jim.......2000-08-16
In the beginning this book seems as if it will be interesting, or scandalous, or something, but it quickly proves to be an endless series of repetititive vignettes about the two title characters and their innumerable attempts to find love, or passion, or a reason to live, or something. The second half of the book is centered mainly on Jim's long affair with Kate, Jules' wife. Jules completely approves of and even facilitates their relationship, so there's really no conflict there. The conflict comes from their innumerable break ups and reconciliations. When I say innumerable, I mean it. After a point I found myself not really caring whether they stayed together or not, but just praying for the relationship to be resolved one way or another so that the descriptions of their silly, melodramatic fights would end. The book is kind of interesting in terms of its style and its commentary on social and moral values in early 20th century Europe, but overall I found it a bit of a bore.

“The runaway winner as the best overall gambling encyclopedia written in the past 20 years.”—Detroit Free Press
Walk away from every casino a winner! Take it from Mensa, the society for people with high IQs: you don’t have to be a genius to triumph at the tables. Here’s the inside line on the games and bets that give the best advantage. Do you know whether to split a pair of aces in blackjack, which slot machines carry the worst payback for the player, and why losses are more significant at video than “live” keno? Beat the bank by understanding all this and more, including odds and probability, the “house edge,” money management, and gambling psychology. The chips will just pile up.
The author lives in New York, NY.

Does not promise pie in the sky results..........2007-04-22
...but, if you do make a trip to Vegas and lose, you'll know you did your very best and not be filled with complete regret about placing sucker and egotistical bets and getting taken in by the atmosphere in general. The author talks in detail about the emotional roller-coaster that is casino gambling, and this book will help you smooth out those bumps in the roller coaster.
Brisman is also very clear that no matter how skilled your decisions, the odds WILL remain in favor of the house at all times.
Highly recommended.......2007-02-20
I'm not a particularly serious gambler - I go to casinos maybe 2-3 times a year. I bought this book several years ago before my first trip to vegas and read it on the plane on my way out (and have gone back and consulted it countless times since), and I'm very happy with it.
The book contains a few introductory chapters followed by 12 chapters devoted to common casino games (followed by a few misc. chapters at the end). It's very straightforward and takes a no-nonsense approach, backed by statistics/probability, to disect each game. For each casino game, the book tells you what the odds are if you play 'by the book', and describes various strategies for playing. In my opinion, this book (or a similar work) is a MUST if you are a beginning gambler and will probably be very useful if you are an intermediate level gambler. It's easy to understand, but at the same time it isn't dumbed down, so should remain a useful reference for all but the most serious/knowledgable gamblers.
I purchased this book primarily to learn blackjack, and specifically to learn basic strategy. The Blackjack chapter is very well laid out and should allow a beginner to learn basic strategy in a fairly short period of time, as it did in my case. If you play blackjack (or plan to play) and don't know basic strategy (or worse - don't know what basic strategy is!) then this book is an absolute must. I feel like I got my money's worth out of the blackjack chapter alone, with the rest of the book a very much appreciated added bonus.
Excellent book goes straight to the point.......2005-06-05
The book has 16 chapters, 2 of which are introductory, and 13 are dedicated to the games themselves. If you've ever visited a casino, you know how easy it is to get overwhelmed by flashing lights and sounds of coins falling everywhere, and then perhaps make an errant decision about playing a slot game or joining a roulette table.
This book does a good job on teaching the fundamentals and rules of each game, and it goes further to tell you why the game is profitable for the casino and how fast you should expect to lose money on it. Since the only game that might possibly be played to the player's advantage is blackjack, Chapter 3, which deals with blackjack, is one of the largest in the book. The author also discusses popular "winning" systems and with mathematical detail displays their faults.
It's an excellent guide to all the games and casino business in general. However, the book serves a dual purpose - after I learned about the odds and the house edge in each game, it's unlikely I will ever gamble at a casino again.
Well written informational book.......2005-04-29
This book is wonderful at explaining odds for many different casino games. Beginners and intermediate players will benefit. The Blackjack, video poker, and craps sections were very informational.
Pros: Fun to read, technical enough to be interesting for beginners and intermediate gamblers, large amount of information in one book.
Cons: If you're a regular at the casino, have played for years, and have read other books involving gambling this book may just be an enjoyable read, but not very informative.
Review.......2004-12-09
This book gave good details into wagering online, however, I found that it lacked the details of a truely great betting book. It's a little thin on the online world of betting.

Book Description
Everyone would rather have someone else plan and conduct events like fairs, fashion shows, conferences and weddings. That someone else is often the professional event planner, a person who knows how to design an event, and do the myriad things needed to bring it off successfully.
Customer Reviews:
Could have been better. . ........2007-07-02
This book does have a lot of general information about the event planning industry. It also give the reader a lot of information from industry heavy hitters. This book is unfornately not for a person who is familiar with or has worked in the industry and are looking to branch out on their own. It is also not a strong suit for those interested in staying more on the social side of event planning. Most of the resources and examples (contracts etc.) are geared to those who are planning large scale events where the customer will be giving you all the money to spend as needed. Overall the authors did their best to tackle such a lofty subject in so few pages. I just don't think they were as sucessful as they could have been.
Informative.......2007-04-10
Informative simply written and easy to understand for the beginner. Has tips, forms and checklists.
Editing Problems.......2007-04-07
This book is very informative, but some of the information boxes are missing the wording. It cuts off some of the words, so the information is incomplete and makes it hard to follow what is going on.
I want to know who to contact in order to get a better edited copy of this book. I have almost completed reading it, but I would have liked to have received a correctly edited copy of the book that I paid for.
Thank you for listening.

Very Helpful.......2006-03-25
This book was very helpful to me as someone who really doesn't have any event planning training, but is looking to start. It had light humorous moments which made it more enjoyable to read. I also loved the side comments. All in all, I would say anyone looking to work in this field should read this book. It will come in very handy and you can read it over and over again.
Easy Reading, Packed with Information.......2006-02-24
With so many business startup books and specialty books in this industry, I found this book to be informative, easy to read and packed with resources. I would say start here and check the back for references and referrals.
