Supporting Yourself as an Artist: A Practical Guide
Deborah A. Hoover Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195059727 |
Book Description
Now available in a newly revised second edition, the highly-acclaimed Supporting Yourself as an Artist remains an essential and invaluable resource for artists of every kind, including painters, filmmakers, poets, and playwrights. The author, Deborah Hoover, demonstrates how any artist can develop a network of individuals, organizations, and information resources in his or her own community and beyond. Hoover outlines a clear, step-by-step approach that enables artists to identify sources of support and obtain assistance. Going beyond the task of providing just another list of funding sources, she also focuses on the most common problems confronting independent artists--finding the appropriate funding sources for a particular project, writing proposals, requesting funding by phone or in person, dealing positively with rejection, and more--and discusses the best ways to deal with them. Drawing on a wide range of individual experiences, Hoover illustrates how some artists have obtained contributions of equipment, while others have received assistance with their income taxes or legal questions, and still others have located low-cost printing services. Based on more than three hundred interviews nationwide, an extensive range of documents, and Hoover's experience as an arts administrator, this handbook offers firsthand accounts which treat this subject from corporate representatives, patrons of the arts, arts administrators, and artists themselves. Drawing on eight years of research, fund-raising experience, and work with artists, Hoover also recommends specific ways to strengthen support for individual artists. For this new edition, she has brought references and appendices up-to-date. She has also extensively revised and supplemented several sections to include discussions of new means of financial support available to artists.

Toiles de Jouy

Book Description
For lovers of French decorating, this book reproduces some of the earliest toile designs from 18th-century France. Delicate flower prints, fun animal motifs, rich historic scenes, and complex architectural patterns are just some of the subjects reproduced here in rich color. The patterns in Toiles de Jouy are reproduced from an antiquarian book containing 50 plates of French toile fabric and wallpaper patterns. The range of colors is astounding and illustrates that toiles aren't always simply one color on a neutral ground. Some of the most fascinating were designed originally in multiple colors. A new introduction and stories about the toile patterns give decorators, home designers and Francophiles information about toiles that they've never seen before.

Book Description
In the seventeenth century, printed and painted cottons from India first appeared in France. In reaction to the enormous commercial success of these bright Indian cottons, a French embargo was placed on the importation of foreign textiles. In 1759 this ban was finally lifted, and in 1760 the Manufacture Royale de Jouy was founded in Jouy-en-Josas, near Paris, to produce printed cotton fabrics on French soil that could compete with the popular imported ones.At first the factory produced polychrome cottons with floral or plant motifs that were intended for clothing. Subsequently, the "monochromes" appeared; adorned with rural, historical, mythological, narrative, and oriental themes, they were used mainly for home furnishings. Within a few years, the factory was the biggest of its kind in Europe, and its printed textiles had become widely used in France and abroad. In all, some 30,000 designs were created at Jouy-en-Josas through the years, many of them the work of renowned eighteenth-century artists such as Fragonard and Boucher.
The authors, both curators at the Musée de la Toile de Jouy, have drawn upon the museum's rich collections to produce the first-ever complete history of these textiles. The illustrations include original designs that are conserved in the museum, exceptional historical examples of toile de Jouy clothing and furniture, documents relating to manufacture and to the founding of the company, and examples of contemporary uses of the textiles.
Toile de Jouy has become increasingly popular among designers and decorators, who incorporate its classic patterns in upholstery, wallpaper, bed linens, tablecloths, napkins, and stationery. For anyone interested in the history of textiles and design, or looking for fresh ideas for interior decor, this book will be an essential reference. 180 illustrations, 160 in color.

Good enough for Marie Antoinette, it is good enough for me!.......2004-04-05
A recently published book, Toile de Jouy: Printed Textiles in the Classical French Style brings focuses on the interesting history of this enduring fabric decorating staple. Toile de Jouy includes hundreds of vibrant color photographs gathering together antique fabrics, pattern sketchbooks, block prints, period clothing, and period soft furnishings. The photographs capture the amazing monochromatic fabric designs that we are familiar with, historical tributes, literary themes, everyday scenes, and bucolic country life. There are also fabrics that we are not likely to associate with toile de Jouy; blazing or muted multicolored florals and geometrics. Toile de Jouy also educates the reader about historical textile production, design, and the history of France during difficult political times.
The Manufacture Royale de Jouy, which produced these fine fabrics, opened for business in 1760 with just three employees. During it's 83 years in business The Manufacture Royale de Jouy accomplished the Herculean task of creating and printing 30,000 patterns. Famous artists of the day were courted to produce patterns and they accepted because the work had high visibility and was well paid. So popular were the fabrics that the annual receipts made it the second largest factory in France.
Always a fine and expensive product, toile was personally selected by Marie Antoinette and Napoleon for interior decoration in their palaces and stately homes. To attest to the brilliance and timeless character of the original designs many are still available from contemporary suppliers such as Pierre Frey, Brunschweig and Fils, Maison Georges Le Manach, Casal-Amelie Prevot, Braquenie, and other manufacturers.

Perfect Gifts for Friends who Love to Write.......2004-07-18
Jouy is an area of France that is very famous for making Toile fabrics. Jouy-en-Josas is a little town near Versailles, southwest of Paris. The Manufacture Royale de Jouy was founded in Joy-en-Josas along the Bièvre river. This factory once employed 1,300 workers who printed miles of fabric. The fabric was printed using copper sheets, which allow precise drawings that are much more detailed than those carved on wood.
Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811) was the artist who's drawings for the copper sheets were later called toiles de Jouy (Jouy fabrics). Soon, a carved copper roll printed 5,000 meters of fabric in one day. Hippolyte le Bas, Jean-Louis Demarne, Horace Vernet were some of the famous painters who loved designing for those interested in Egypt and mythology. While the factory closed, some new prints are still made by using old drawings from the Textile Museum in Mulhouse.
I've recently given away some of these beautiful Gibbs Smith cards to friends who love to write, but this is a box I'm keeping. These "Toiles De Jouy" cards are beautiful and are printed with reproductions of 18th-century French fabric and wallpaper designs. The box itself is very collectable and I'm thinking of filling it with letters from a friend.
The box has a hinged lid and contains 20 note cards and 20 envelopes. There are four designs and five cards printed with each design.
The first card is bursting with pink flowers, tiny scenes from far-away lands and an elephant, bird and interesting deer creature. Each picture is framed in a pink circle and the flowers meander around the frames.
The second card is highly decorative and you can see the fabric texture and delicate, almost antique quality of the monochromatic slate blue designs set against the vanilla fabric.
My favorite and third card in this collection is a scene of flowers and leaves with animal heads. It is like the flowers and leaves have their own personalities or animals are being born from mysterious and unnamed species of plants. A green and pink flower burst with stars while mythical beast hides behind a sharply edged leaf. I especially noticed the seven-pointed star flowers and the intricate and imaginative flower designs in purple, fuschia and dark green.
The last card has pastoral scenes and contains pictures of angels, roosters, children dancing in circles to music and outdoor retreats all in a gray print.
You may also enjoy: Toiles de Jouy by Betty Lou Phillips or look for the complete history of these textiles in Toile de Joy by Melanie Riffel.
If you love these cards, you can also still purchase fabrics online and some of the "ancient" prints are stunningly beautiful.

Westerns and American Culture, 1930-1955
R. Phillip Loy Manufacturer: McFarland & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0786410760 |
Book Description
Many people have fond memories of Friday nights and Saturday afternoons spent in theatres watching cowboy stars of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s chase villains across the silver screen or help a heroine out of harm's way. Over 2,600 Westerns were produced between 1930 and 1955 and they became a defining part of American culture. This work focuses on the idea that Westerns were one of the vehicles by which viewers learned the values and norms of a wide range of social relationships and behavior, and thus examines the ways in which Western movies reflected American life and culture during this quarter century. Chapters discuss such topics as the ways that Westerns included current events in film plot and dialogue, reinforced the role of Christianity in American culture, reflected the emergence of a strong central government, and mirrored attitudes toward private enterprise. Also covered is how Westerns represented racial minorities, women, and Indians.

Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture
Trevor Kelley , and Leslie Simon Manufacturer: Harper Paperbacks ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0061195391 Release Date: 2007-04-24 |
Book Description
What is emo? For starters it's a form of melodic, confessional, or EMOtional punk rock. But emo is more than a genre of music–it's the defining counterculture movement of the '00s. EVERYBODY HURTS is a reference book for emo, tracing its angsty roots all the way from Shakespeare to Holden Caufield to today's most popular bands.
There's nothing new about that perfect chocolate and peanut butter combination––teenagers and angst. What is new is that emo is the first cultural movement born on the internet. With the development of early social networking sites like Make Out Club (whose mission is to unite "like–minded nerds, loners, indie rockers, record collectors, video gamers, hardcore kids, and artists through friendship, music, and sometimes even love") outcast teens had a place to find each other and share their pain, their opinions, and above all, their music–which wasn't available for sale at the local record store.
Authors Leslie Simon and Trevor Kelley lead the reader through the world of emo including its ideology, music, and fashion, as well as its influences on film, television, and literature. With a healthy dose of snark and sarcasm, EVERYBODY HURTS uses diagrams, illustrations, timelines, and step–by–step instructions to help the reader successfully achieve the ultimate emo lifestyle. Or, alternately, teach him to spot an emo kid across the mall in order to mock him mercilessly.

Rooks belong on open files... but sometimes they belong on closed files, supporting pawn breaks to force the file open . You play PN3 in order to play BN2 ...except sometimes you want to play PN3 and have to play BN2 to cover the resulting weak squares...........
There are around 70 (!) such maxims including the exceptional circumstances where they cannot be applied. Each lesson is about two pages long - easily digested over a tea-break and equally easy to remember. The flip side of this brevity is somewhat patchy coverage, but it's still the best value chess publication since Simple Chess.
