              Book Description

L ong considered the bible for storytellers, Aristotles Poetics is a fixture of college courses on everything from fiction writing to dramatic theory. Now Michael Tierno shows how this great work can be an invaluable resource to screenwriters or anyone interested in studying plot structure. In carefully organized chapters, Tierno breaks down the fundamentals of screenwriting, highlighting particular aspects of Aristotles work. Then, using examples from some of the best movies ever made, he demonstrates how to apply these ancient insights to modern-day screenwriting. This user-friendly guide covers a multitude of topics, from plotting and subplotting to dialogue and dramatic unity. Writing in a highly readable, informal tone, Tierno makes Aristotles monumental work accessible to beginners and pros alike in areas such as screenwriting, film theory, fiction, and playwriting.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars A solid work.......2007-09-25

              [4.5 stars]

The oft-stated maxim of dramatic storytelling, everyone who is anyone in screenwriting recites, is to read Aristotle's Poetics. The problem? The original work in Greek is not what one would call bedside reading; the English translations of the original are almost as bad.

So what is a budding screenwriter to do if, as suggested, he wanted to understand the underpinnings of drama without having to learn and understand ancient Greek and all the arcane references in the Poetics? Well, that budding screenwriter buys and reads the new book by Michael Tierno. It's small enough that it could be light reading; each of its 33 chapters are easily digestible, but be not fooled! It's filled with tremendous information that, if properly understood, will help a writer, any writer, tell a gripping story.

Some of the reasons I gave it a four-and-a-half star rating instead of the full five are the same as I would give the original Poetics: the language is staid and a little difficult to assimilate for the modern understanding. Tierno does a good job of interpretation, but even then, there are some hard bumps that will give the reader pause. Tierno also tries hard to tie all the chapters into a smooth narrative, but again, there are some bumps: I don't, for example, see why chapter 29 (The Non-Linear Soul of Quentin Tarantino) was added as it seems incongruous without useful information not already covered earlier.

The other star-reducing problem is the seeming out-of-context quotations from the Poetics that require close reading to see their appropriateness, although for the most part the author does a fine job of showing precisely that. It's just a slight impediment to the flow. Very slight.

That said, here's my recommendation to obtain the maximum benefit out of this book: read the Poetics first. After which, rely on Tierno to provide the necessary interpretation; a job, as I stated earlier that he does quite well.

In summary, this is a good book. With close reading, perhaps even re-reading, it is capable of energizing your stories in the way the original work by (as the tagline of the book says) The Greatest Mind in Western Civilization does. This book is definitely barely-hidden gold that is easy to pass over. That fact it's not too expensive or overly ponderous in tone only adds to the value. High recommendations.

Postscript: The book has the author's website on the back. As of the date of writing this review, it's just a placeholder. Perhaps if the author eventually gets around to putting something useful up, he'll receive the full five stars!

              4 out of 5 stars Aristotle Lite.......2007-01-04

Having read the original "Poetics" several times, this rendition of the master is very welcome. It touches on the salient points and how it relates to screenwriting. Good use of examples. My only suggestion is that he could have given us a little more depth.

              5 out of 5 stars A great way to introduce Aristotle's Poetics........2006-08-10

If you are (or want to be) a serious screenwriter, you probably already know names like Robert McKee, Syd Field, Linda Seger, David Trottier and even David Bordwell...

The good thing about Mr. Tierno's book is that it goes back to the one fundamental text who, 2300 years before the birth of Cinema, already thought about many of the things all other screenwriting authors still talk about - what do we do in order to achieve higher drama?

And it is surprising how fresh Aristotle still sounds today, according to Mr Tierno's reading. Even if we consider that the object of Aristotle's thought was not the Cinema, but the Classical Greek Theatre - or the mimetic form of representation.

In fact, there is nothing new about Aristotle (or Cinema, or narrative, or screenwriting) here besides the fact that Mr. Tierno does an accurate reading of the great greek thinker and explains many of his key concepts.

In a nutshell, this book is an excelent reminder of how important, necessary and universal, good drama can be. Also it is a great reminder that screenwriting is a natural heir of most of storytelling's past traditions.

It is also a proof that screenwriting is an art form by itself.

4 out of 5 stars Concise dramatic instruction.......2006-03-28

This book is useful for fiction writers as well as screenwriters. The author interprets Aristotle's ideas and suggestions and then renders them with examples into language applicable to modern drama. Many of Aristotle's original ideas are quoted and have timeless power. For example: "Beginners succeed earlier with Diction and Characters than with the construction of a story."

Tierno relates how the parts of a modern script evaluation (Log Line, Brief, Plot Summary, Comments, Idea, Story, Character, Dialogue, and Production Values) mirror Aristotle's examination of the same elements. I especially liked how the film "Gladiator" was used for the example of "the mistake in a hero's reasoning, leading to the hero's subsequent related misfortunes."

The short length makes the book a fast but powerful read.

5 out of 5 stars It really helps to understand screenwritng concepts.......2003-11-06

This book has not only helped me to understand the somewhat complex art of dramatic stroy telling - but it has helped me to help others. Recently working on a documentaty project with a first time director, this book allowed him to internalize and distill his thoughts into a more cohesive vision, that was readily translatable to an audience. I would reccomend this book to any one who wants to gain insight and understanding to "the movies."

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From the Trenches Advice.......2005-12-24

I really appreciated this book, because it reads like a seasoned veteran standing over your shoulder. He gives good advice born of experience. He's inspiring without being platitudinous or unrealistic.

The best thing about this book for me, though, is that it gave me solid technical guidance, and not with tired, pedantic, cookie-cutter structure talk. He helps clear your head so that you can look at each part of your script with a cutting, critical eye. He helps you get your butt in the chair and your hands hammering away. After reading his book I was able to plow through the rest of my script with a lot more vigor and purpose.

I can't recommend this book enough. I do think that a more utilitarian book ought to be read too, like David Trottier's Screenwriter's Bible, but this is a great follow-up that will get you gassed up and writing. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars Full of insight and advice.......2005-03-22

This book is a clever, insightful, informative little treasure chest of information and advice on excellent screenwriting. It begins by explaining that organization is key for writing a good script. He then proceeds to explain in detail the elements of log lines, plot development, character development, dialogue, structure, word usage, rewriting and more. His writing is informative and humorous at the same time making this book a quick, easy, worthwhile read.

Author, Tom Lazarus is a knowledgable, experienced screenwriting instructor at UCLA who wrote the movie Stigmata.

5 out of 5 stars Super Excellent book written by a produced screenwriter........2003-07-11

To not being repetitive to what other reviewers have written, I want to add, that this book is first of all, written by a produced screenwriter with his movie Stigmata, so what he writes is based in his actual experience of writing screenplays, being rejected once and again, pitching sessions, until he hit his dream, so for me, this is a book with authority, full of resources and smart advice. I remember that once I had a doubt on how was the correct way to write a phone conversation, so first I tried other more technical books I have, but I couldn't find it, so I tried this and I found it. I have a suggestion for this and other great screenwriting books, PLEASE ADD AN INDEX.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, useful, humorus, as if a friend is talking to you.......2002-11-11

A Hollywood insider, Tom Lazarus has taken the time to organize his book into understandable parts. He begins with what could be the earliest expectations of the novice writer. Then as he develops the approaches to writing and the usual twists and turns that a writer would encounter in writing a script, he adds the personal comments, anecdotes, and metaphors that entertain as well as elucidate the writer's growth and development and challenges.

Like William Goldman's more autobiographical "Which Lie Did I Tell" Lazarus puts his heart, mind, and strengths right on the table. He writes like a good friend telling you almost everything you want and need to know. He has the guts to tell you what will and will not work. I applaud him for that. As a writer of a How To book, he took the time and risked the emotional upheaval of writing from the heart to give us the goods. He also revised this book enough times to make it easy and fun to read and understand. This book is what you need to know to write a good script. Period.

Thank you for a great book, Mr. Lazarus!

5 out of 5 stars Great advice, ESPECIALLY if you already know how to write.......2002-05-06

Tom Lazarus' style is simple and strait forward, almost conversational, making this book easy to read cover to cover in minimal time and with a minimum of effort (not that I'm adverse to a hard read, and I'm a reasonably intelligent person, but when you're balancing a full time job, a part time job, a long daily commute, a serious relationship, and - at present - three unfinished screenplays, easy is a good thing). True, other books may offer more concrete advice, but if you already know how to write, how to format, and have ingested all the formulas and theories you can stomach, this book is a breath of fresh air, a casual collection of simple, useful advice from a working screenwriter to the aspiring screenwriter. Read "Writing Screenplays That Sell" by Michael Hauge, "Writing Great Screenplays for Film and TV" by Dona Cooper, and "Poetics" by Aristotle, write something, then read this book (along with "How Not to Write a Screenplay" by Denny Martin Flinn).

This is great if you're studying medicinal herbs, it helps to "get up close" to plants that probably don't grow in your area. We really like pretty much all Dover products, and this was no exception.

                        Product Description

Eastern Native American people treated warts with the powerful resin of mayapple. Doctors still use chemicals from mayapple on warts and in a drug for childhood leukemia. Medicinal Plants of North America: A Flora DelaterreTM Coloring Book tells the story of mayapple and thirteen other plants, along with drawings of the plants to color. Some of the herbs featured are both weeds and valuable medicine.

Since 1996, on the radio show The Plant Detective from Montana Public Radio, botanical gumshoe Flora Delaterre has explored medicinal plants around the world. Now Beth Judy, the show s writer and narrator, brings Flora s knowledge and lore to the page in text easy enough for children to read and interesting enough for adults. The book starts with a brief introduction to medicinal plants and ends with conservation information. In addition to the plant drawings by botanical illustrator DD Dowden, Flora herself appears on most pages an appealing human element that can also be colored.

                        Book Description

The winner of the National Book Award and now considered a classic, The House of Morgan is the most ambitious history ever written about an American banking dynasty. Acclaimed by The Wall Street Journal as "brilliantly researched and written," the book tells the rich, panoramic story of four generations of Morgans and the powerful, secretive firms they spawned. It is the definitive account of the rise of the modern financial world. A gripping history of banking and the booms and busts that shaped the world on both sides of the Atlantic, The House of Morgan traces the trajectory of the J. P. Morgan empire from its obscure beginnings in Victorian London to the crash of 1987. Ron Chernow paints a fascinating portrait of the private saga of the Morgans and the rarefied world of the American and British elite in which they moved. Based on extensive interviews and access to the family and business archives, The House of Morgan is an investigative masterpiece, a compelling account of a remarkable institution and the men who ran it, and an essential book for understanding the money and power behind the major historical events of the last 150 years.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, interesting and relevant book.......2007-03-03

This is a great story told well. Chernow is an amazing researcher and a very good writer. I agree with some of the reviewers that the earlier parts of the book are better, but his description of the transformation of the capital markets in the late 20th century and the House of Morgan's role in this transformation is interesting and relevant. This book increased my understanding of the banking and investment banking worlds. My only quarrel is that, at times, I thought Chernow editorialized too much detracting from the story. Like many financial journalists, I got the sense that he is not a big fan of capitalism. Perhaps that's unfair, but if he simply told the story without some of his asides, the book would have been even better.

5 out of 5 stars A book about the history of a family.......2006-12-14

This is an interesting book about the history of the Morgan family. It tends to drag on and is not as good as Chernow's other books about finance (notably Hamilton). I was expecting quite a bit more on JP Morgan and the book did not deliver in that way. Despite those two flaws the book is filled with such good information and is so well organized that it still deserves five stars I would just know you are not buying a book solely or even focusing on JP Morgan.

                        4 out of 5 stars America's Gilded Age.......2006-11-10

Ron Chernow is good at writing in great detail while making his books interesting. "House of Morgan" is well documented as are all of Chernow's books. This book is the interesting story of big banking in the United States and abroad during the period of 1850-1900. Chernow goes beyond the earlier years of the J. P. Morgan empire to the present; giving an introduction to Morgan/Chase as we know it today. The early founder, Pierpont, was ruthless, secretive and rich. The book is a long one, and took awhile to read, but it was worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars The history of JP Morgan par excellence!.......2006-10-26

A much more engaging and beautiful account on the life of the Morgan family and their banking legacy has been outdone by this work from Ron Chernow.

The book covers all aspects of the Morgan family and even discovers long forgotten family secrets. It dwells into the minds of these great capitalists and takes the reader deep into historic moments in American financial history. The overall grandeur and majesty of some of the most powerful men to have ever walked the earth, men who saved the U.S. from financial ruin, is evident in every page.

Read this one and you will love it!

3 out of 5 stars In Depth, to the Nth degree.......2006-04-22

I read Chernow's awesome book on Rockefeller and expected the same from this treatment of America's first uber-bank. For some reason the narrative just seemed half as interesting as the Rockefeller book. This work primarily seemed to be lots of facts and figures and a historical timeline-- the interesting anecdotes and sidebars available in Rockefeller seemed to be somewhat lacking here-- either that or I've become jaded in what entertains me.

Overall it's certainly the definitive work on the subject to be sure, but I was hoping on a little more entertainment as the thing is a telephone book. And anyone can read a telephone book for a hundred pages-- 500 pages takes dedication.
