The Gothic Image captures through art and architecture the spirit and elan of the medieval renaissance in ways histories and biographies cannot. Unlike today, where contemporary art and architecture either may or may not mimic our age, the Gothic Image is an imprint of its time and place. Male leaves few artifacts unturned, and explores in so many different facets of the polysemy of its age. A must for every medievalist, and gem for artists, theologians, architects, and "builders" of meaning. This highly critical reviewer gives it full accolades, and recommends all interested parties to grab this reprint before it too fades from view!

Late Middle Ages Overview.......1998-12-14

I can think of no better introduction, as well as comprehensive review, of the medieval renaissance than this wonderful synthesis of medieval art and medieval sacramentalism, wherein the whole universe, from stellar constellations, to the gargoyle atop cathedral buttresses, comes alive in all its many dimensions. This book, long out of print, was the gem of my undergraduate work in medieval history, philosophy, art, and architecture. The price is a bit steep, but this one book can remain a perpetual resource for insight, understanding, and knowledge of a different time and place -- so foreign and alien to today's historicity, but that captures the imagination and never lets go.

A Great Book about a Great Civilization during the Middle Ages.......2005-12-29

Henry Adams' MONT SAINT MICHEL AND CHARTRES (MSMC) is simply a great book. Adams' lucid writing style and his insights are impressive, and this book should be read by every supposedly "educated" individual. Adams deals with complex topics such as Gothic Architecture, Medieval poetry and mysticsim, and Scholastic Philosophy with clarity and ease.

The early sections of MSMC compare the church of Mont Saint Michel with the Catholic view of St. Michel who was militant and was the perfect example of the Medieval hero defending the Catholic Church against all enemies. The comparison with this church with that of Chartres which was the examplar of God's mercy via St. Mary is insighful and facinating reading.

Such embellishment of St. Mary or Notre Dame(Our Lady)is further investigated in Adams book by Adams' careful treatment of Medieval Poetry. Adams's translations of Medieval French and Latin are good and give those who are not familiar with these languages a better understanding of both the poetry and the Medieval devotion to St. Mary.

Much of this peotry was mystical, and Adams demonstrates the attempt of St. Francis and the Franciscans to use such mystical thought in their missionary efforts to help the very poor. St. Francis' mysticism is revealed in Adams' translation of St. Francis' poem titled BROTHER SUN AND SISTER MOON.

Henry Adams then compares and contrasts Medieveal mysticism, which bordered on Pantheism, with Scholastic Philosophy. Adams gives the reader an insight to scholastic debate when he summarizes the debate between William of Champaux and Peter Abelard(1079-1142). Here Adams demonstrates his understanding of how students and masters argued and learned. He also shows the careful balence the Catholic authorities tried to impose between reasoned debate and heresy.

The last section of the book deals with the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). Adams careful treatment of Aquinas' thought is worth the price of the book. Adams gives the Angelic Doctor high praise for both his clear thinking and liberality. Adams also effectively deals with the liberality of the Medieval Catholic authorities who canonized so many men whose views were apparently contradcitory.

Henry Adams' MONT SAINT MICHEL AND CHARTRES is intellectual history at its best. The book deals with complex ideas and views in an attractive literary style which holds the readers' interest. This reviewer has read this book numerous times since he first read it in 1968 and has never found the book to be boring. Readers should also read Thomas Woods HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH BUILT WESTERN CIVILIZATION and compare Woods sections on the High Middle Ages with Adams' book.

Immerses the reader in medieval history reflected by cathedrals........2005-10-25

Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres should be considered and read alongside The Education of Henry Adams. In Chartres, he described the medieval world view as reflected in its cathedrals, which he believed expressed "an emotion, the deepest man ever felt--the struggle of his own littleness to grasp the infinite." Adams was drawn to the ideological unity expressed in Roman Catholicism and symbolized by the Virgin Mary; he contrasted this coherence with the uncertainties of the 20th century. An intellectual journey of an American's view of France.

Delightful Read!.......2004-07-08

A friend suggested I read this book as I love most things French and especially Medieval buildings. I have visited both places before but obviously did not take in the detail Adams did on his visit to them. His tales are delightful, though sometimes hard to follow. The book is intellectual but really anyone can sit down and read this and be entertained.

Before reading this book I had been researching the Cathars of 11th-12th century France and this made a delightful addition to my reading on the Cathars. I recommend this book because it is stimulating, the imagery is wonderful, and it is historical.

An idiosyncratic tour of medieval French culture.......2003-10-02

Privately printed in 1904 (and revised seven years later), "Mont Saint Michel and Chartres" was never meant for the general public. It's the intellectual's ultimate "what I did on my summer vacation" essay, written for friends as a gift to accompany their excursions through France. The first half is a highly personal travel book and an idiosyncratic guide to art and architecture of medieval French cathedrals (particularly of Chartres); the last six chapters offer a succinct excursion through the spiritual mindset of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

If you've never been to Mont Saint Michel or to Chartres, the first ten chapters can be hard going; it's like reading a 250-page description of a painting you've never seen. Even if you have been to both locations, it's unlikely you'll remember the details Adams expected his readers to have in front of them. Fortunately, his prose is not dry (and is at times characteristically witty). Adams is able to render vividly the fleches, the portals, the arches, the statues, and the stained glass panels, and he provides the tourist with a thorough understanding of the achievement represented by medieval religious art. He also supplies as background a wealth of related literary and historical references .

The tenth chapter (and the last of Adams's official "tour") focuses less on the cathedral of Chartres itself and more on the cult of the Virgin that it represents. It serves as a segue to the second half of the book, which will be far more accessible to general readers. He compares contemporary portrayals of three queens--Eleanor of Guienne (Aquitaine), Blanche of Castile, and Mary of Champagne (who wasn't really a queen, but never mind)--to the representations of the Virgin Mary in the art, in poetry, and in hagiography. "The Virgin was a real person, whose tastes, wishes, instincts, passions, were intimately known," Adams argues. "Like other Queens, she had many of the failings and prejudices of her humanity." The final three chapters turn to the intellectual life: the ongoing tensions between universalism and nominalism, Bernard and Abelard, mysticism and rationalism--all culminating in the balancing act of Thomas Aquinas.

Over 75 years ago the "Cambridge History of English and American Literature" judged Adams's book as "probably the best expression of the spirit of the Middle Ages." Well, not quite; such a view could be proffered by a literary critic perhaps, but certainly not by a historian, and I think Adams himself would have been appalled by such a statement. (A more accurate and more thorough account from the early twentieth century is Charles Homer Haskins's "Renaissance of the Twelfth Century," published in 1927.) What Adams offers here is a glimpse of the medieval Catholic intellectual spirit as seen through the prism of his own rather conservative nineteenth-century Protestantism. His book is not so much a scholarly treatise as it is a wistful refashioning of the medieval spirit.

A disguised autobiography.......2002-03-23

A reading of Richard Brookhiser's recent (and highly recommended) *America's First Dynasty* sent me back to *Mont Saint Michel and Chartres*, a book I hadn't read in thirty years. I'm glad I returned to it, because a few years have, I trust, put me in a better position to appreciate what's going on in the book.

On one level, the most obvious one, Adam's book is a sometimes idiosyncratic history of Medieval art, literature, and religion that takes as its center of gravity the great Gothic cathedrals of the period--structures that Adams thinks sum up what the middle ages are all about. To read the book on this level alone is fine. It provides intriguing insights into, for example, courtly love and the cult of Mary.

But I now believe that, at a deeper level, the book is disguised autobiography on the one hand and a backhanded history of Adams's own time on the other. An at times overwhelming sense of nostalgia permeates the book. In reading Adams on the 11th century mystics, the debates of the schoolmen, the chansons of the troubadours, and the unified worldview of the middle ages, one can almost hear him sigh with longing to return to a world which, he thinks, was whole, unfractured, and pure--a world, as the medievals themselves would've said, which reflects "integritas." This reveals a great deal about the restless, unquiet nature of Henry Adams the man. But it also reveals the restless, unquiet nature of the modern era which spawned and molded him: the gilded age, the fast-paced first wave of capitalism, secularism, and consumerism, which has no center of gravity, no art, no tradition. And even though we claim to be living in a "postmodern" age, it seems to me that a great deal of the qualities Adams deplored in his own times are still with us and account for our own sense of homelessness.

Book Description

This is the second of three volumes of a classic series on French religious art, the monumental accomplishment of the eminent French scholar Emile Male (1862-1954). Male began his study with a single book on the thirteenth century, and only later turned to the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. This volume is, then, the centerpiece of the series.

The not so fashinable side of this book.......2005-11-24

This book has some lovely, classy and well organised pictures, plus a fair comment. However, half the book comments the worst side of Oscar fashion and the dresses that were admired so much at their time are often left aside. Personally I would have liked to see more glamour rather than more trash.

Hardly complete, and not much fun.......2004-07-20

This poorly-written, poorly-edited, poorly-designed book doesn't serve its subject matter very well. The photos did not reproduce well (not even the recent photos!) and some of the design choices (like the circles that highlight details on the various gowns) have no value from an editorial or visual standpoint.

There are many years that are represented by only three or four gowns -- even recent years! Surely there have been more standouts than that? I expected this book to be a feast for the eyes, an endless parade of gowns ranging from elegant to outrageous, but the pickings are indeed slim.

I thought there were some grievous omissions, but I couldn't put my finger on what, or whom. Geena Davis now comes to mind -- love her or hate her, there's no denying the fact that the statuesque form of this six-footer is hard to ignore. Why isn't she represented anywhere? Why not more about men's fashion? Why not more profiles of designers, a closer look at Oscar-night jewelry and how it's loaned out, even a spread or two of how one actress's Oscar fashions progressed throughout the years? The scope of this book isn't terribly imaginative or (as the title proclaims) complete.

The writing is awful. This isn't really the sort of book you pick up for the writing anyway but, seeing as how the pictures weren't even that good, I ended up reading the little blurbs of writing and found them full of clunky, poor word choices and bad jokes.

Speaking of bad jokes, yes, we all know Cher can be wacky. We've all seen her black zigzag outfit with the crazy rooster headdress a million times already. Is there any reason for no fewer than THREE photos of this godforsaken getup to appear in this book? Especially since the author repeatedly expresses a dislike of it? Making fun of Cher's sequinned rooster outfit is nothing new; it's been done to death, and by funnier, more articulate people than this author. We didn't need more of it in this book.

Just show us more pictures of beautiful gowns!

Disappointing treatment of a great subject !!!.......2004-03-07

I bought this book for my wife who has been an Oscar fan for 50 years or more. She found the book to be poorly written, poorly edited and it seemed to have a hangup on hippie type dresses. Her remark about the photos was "there certainly must be a lot of glamourous type photos that could have been used".

Few can resist the glitz, glitter and suspense of Oscar night. Who would want to as where else is such a concentration of beauty and fashion to be found? While, of course, the actual award presentations are the crux of the evening that stroll down the famous Red Carpet has become a must-see for many.

Now, for the first time in this eye-popping volume is a collection of the silver screen's beauties over the past 75 years. All are captured in brilliant full-color photographs (500 of them). Many of the gowns chosen brought oohs and aahs - a few brought "What in the world is she wearing?"

Not only do readers find a parade of Oscar dresses but they're also given insider information re fashion and style analysis. What fun it is to see Katharine Hepburn in the casual duds she wore for her 1974 appearance and surely no one can forget Bjork's "swan dress" just two years ago. Cher, of course, is one of a kind in her Bob Mackie dresses.

While styles may change we find that elegance doesn't as witnessed by Mary Pickford in her exquisite 1930 gown. Lithe and lovely as ever there's Audrey Hepburn in a lovely Givenchy that emphasizes her tiny waist, and, of course, La Taylor stuns in a red Halston strapless. Halle Berry took top honors in the fashion category last year, and Grace Kelly looks royal and elegant in a silk gown designed by Edith Head.

There are lot of memories in "Oscar Fashion" plus much to be learned and enjoyed.

Wonderful guide to attacking motifs.......2005-12-07

When I picked up this book and looked inside, I was immediately entranced. You get much the same effect when you pick up a book of quotations - every single small phrase or paragraph that you read is to the point and interesting or funny or remarkable. There's no waffle in a book of quotes, nor is there waffle in Gallagher's handbook. It's an idea book for someone with little time, or someone on the move (say, on a train to work). It gives you 101 ideas, mostly one page long but sometimes two, with so many diagrams that you don't need a board to follow the lines. Actually I should write Ideas, as they definitely deserve a capital letter!

First example is the back ranker. From the 'contents' page this might seem a mundane example, but wow would you be wrong if you thought that. The very first demo is a fireworks display. It's hard to forget an Idea after such a spectacular demonstration! Gallagher's enthusiasm for vicious attacking positions is infectious! Imagine yourself playing out a combination that leaves a huge smile on your face - this is definitely good for you, though it's probably best for your opponent if he/she is playing you on the Internet from very far away!

I really like the way Gallagher also takes the time to point out how the defender can deflect some of the evil ideas just in time. After all, we're not always going to be on the attacking side... He also points out the main features that you have to consider, when working out if a particular sacrificial idea will be successful - for example, careful consideration of the black king advancing rather than retreating, after the 'Greek Gift' sac on h7. You also get insights into some of Gallagher's favorite openings, which are all fiercely aggressive and just the thing to play so long as you are not facing the top world grandmasters - and we're not, are we! These include: King' Gambit, various Sicilians, King's Indian, Benoni. Gallagher's attitude is "Fortune favours the Brave" and "In my experience the more belligerent one's mood the better one's results".

This is one of the best books ever dealing with attacking and sacrificial play. Highly recommended.

101 Ideas All Right But Lacking Unity.......2000-06-01

Although I personally enjoy a book like this - individual positions that I can first play out against my computer and afterwards compare with the "correct" attacking procedure - you should be aware that that's about all there is to this book. It's not a primer on attacking chess, it doesn't develop an "attacking theory," it just gives you isolated, random examples of attacks (usually against the king) and frankly, you probably have alot of good examples already in your own books.

if your class is using this txt, i would highly recommend buying a used copy... new editions come out on almost a yearly to bi-yearly basis... after i completed my course, my book store would not buy the book back because the professor ordered a different edition for next semester...

Strategic managment -- a clear choice.......2005-09-09

This is an excellent text that is the bible of many strategy professors around the US. It is clear, concise and very thorough. the case studies at the back of the book offer a great deal of practical examples. I highly recommend making this book part of your professional reference library.

Strategic Management in the Context of Globalizatiion.......2000-11-14

This book is a detailed investigation of strategic management in the context of globalization and competitiveness. An integrated approach is used, but firm-based theory of strategic management is stressed throughout the book. Cases included in the book are chosen properly in relation with the topics, that is theory is clearly connected to the real experiences. Especially, topics titled as "Cooperative Strategy" , "Corporate Governance" , "Corporate Entrepreneurship and Innovation" will be very useful to better understand the planning dynamics.

The book is divided into two sections. One is assigned for theory and the other is assigned for cases. Cases are updated and includes the most popular and fabulous companies such as "Amazon.com". Overall, I recommend this comprehensive book (1008 p.) to readers who wish to have a grand source !

Highly Overpriced by Publisher for Quick Profit Seller.......1999-09-01

Don't bother buying this book unless you 'absolutely' have to have it for a class you might be taking or for special research. I found this book to be better than most, however it is ridiculously overpriced and would best be left on the shelf to collect dust than to fork over a whole days' wages on this book.

Not up to par.......2002-06-11

The textbook was used for a capstone Strategic Management course. The textbook was not written at a upperclassmen level. More like sophomore, maybe junior level at best.

Recevied the book within a week and was in better shape than I expected.

Instead of providing information in a clear and interesting way, the authors decided to bore the readers out of their minds. The layout is poor and the sentence structure is complex and longwinded. All in all, the material is presented in a very poor fashion. Don't buy it unless the sleeping pills aren't working.
