Book Description
The digital revolution has brought with it a dizzying multiplication of new styles and techniques in the field of graphic design not to mention a whole new professional jargon. The Designer's Lexicon is the only cross-disciplinary technical dictionary that captures this rich and often confusing profusion of design-speak. It is packed with over 4000 terms that cover the broad spectrum of practices a modern designer must be familiar with: traditional graphics, pre-press, photography, printing, typography, and computers. Four hundred color diagrams and illustrations visually supplement the definitions. With a sturdy concealed spiral binding that reduces wear-and-tear, The Designer's Lexicon exemplifies the criterion designers seek most in a reference book utility. For established professionals navigating new design terrain, as well as students, production managers, and printers, this is an essential dictionary for a new century.

Informative, organized, thorough.......2007-08-16
I haven't referred to this book as much as I thought I would, but it has proven to be a good resource for computer, internet, photography, typography, paper, prepress, printing and finishing/binding information.
This book provides definitions of hundreds of terms and includes illustrations and photos where needed to make a point.
I will hang on to this book for a long time.
Handy day-to-day reference.......2005-09-18
Not only is this the most complete reference for terminology, it is one of the most inventive and best examples of infomation design (similar to the work of Richard Saul Wurmann in its approach to looking up information, but without the maps and graphics). It's cross-referenced to the hilt, and contains explanations even seasoned old-timers will find useful. I'm currently using it as a required text in one of my design courses (graduate-level); my only hope is that it stays current and updated as the field and technology progresses.
An education in itself.......2002-09-02
I have a fairly minimal background in graphic design, except for a two week class I took when I was 12 (I'm 24 now). Other than that, I'm just computer literate and I learn things quickly. This book gave me a wealth of knowledge in an easy to digest form- Running into terms in your Adobe help files that you don't recognize? Get out the lexicon. Talking to a printer and you don't want to sound like an idiot? Get out the lexicon. Everyone from beginners to pros should have this book. The definitions are simple but precise, with examples of the more difficult terms to make them easier to understand. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
A definite reference book worth owning!.......2002-08-13
Have you read about the story of a designer who went for an interview with a design company and was not considered because they didn't know terms such as "gutter" or the difference between "seriff" and "sans-seriff".
Sure, many of us should know those terms but if you are an individual who wants to continue to learning these terms that printers or professionals tend to use and you are asking yourself in yourself "what the heck are they talking about?". Sure, no one will blame you if you were nodding off in your graphic design class or didn't really read that chapter on print terminology or just plainly forgotten the terms but the thing is, if you really want that job, don't want to look ignorant in front of certain people or if you don't want to continually badger that professional, printer or broker of terminology, then "the designer's LEXICON" is the book that you will find quite helpful.
The book is broken down to chapters for terms such as:
· Computer Terms
· Internet Terms
· Photography Terms
· Typography Terms
· Prepress Terms
· Paper Terms
· Printing Terms
· Finishing Terms
· General Terms
And to find these words, you are provided with a word finder which helps finding that word in a jiffy.
You know paper but you are asked by a client about satin laid paper, a printer wants you to ad a bleed, a designer asks you about glyphs or asks you about a pica size for print where you usually are working more with pixels, it's important to know these words and it's good to have a book that you can look to and get the definition quickly.
There are a few reference books that I highly recommend which include popular books such as "Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market", "Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color" to name a few, "the designer's LEXICON" is one of those books that is worth owning.
Great reference tool for all in the graphics field.......2001-01-28
A great book for defining all those confusing terms in all the computer and design books. It clearly defines the terms you will come across in the design, layout, pre-press, and printing fields as well as offering many illustrations and diagrams or useful charts further explaining terms.
I looked long and hard to find it and for this price, EVERYONE who works in the field should own it!

Customer Reviews:
Great simple classic knits for medium size woman.......2007-07-23
I'm not plus size (not super skinny either), but I ran into this at the
library and had to get my own copy - many of the designs are simple and
classic and wearable/comfortable looking, which is hard to find.
Great Variety.......2007-05-15
I found the patterns in this book fantastic. Being "Down Under" it is very hard to find knitting patterns in larger sizes. This book gave me a really good selection of patterns from lounging around the house jumpers to some really nice evening tops (if you use the right yarn). Also a good selection of singlets for summer. A great variety and really easy and clear instructions. Pictures of all the patterns taken in a way so you can actually see the finished product.
Classic Knits for Real Women.......2007-03-30
I loved the designs and the variety. Among the Jackets, sweaters, cardigans, tops and scarves, I saw a granny square purse that I fell in love with. I did not like the loop-stitch set. The pictures are clear and the charts are next to the pattern. At the back of the book there are knitting techniques, abbreviations and yarn information including mail/web addresses. Very useful book.
Hugely Lovely Knits for Most of Us, 36-46 NOT Plus Size!.......2007-01-26
I am just about to buy this book! Saw it in a book shop but I have an Amazon birthday gift to spend. I LOVE this book for the truly wearable designs in it. It is being mis-marketed for plus sizes! Big mistake because the actual bust measurement range is 36 inches to 46 inches. The petite ladies won't even consider it and the 3X will be disappointed. I've just lost 45 pounds on Nutrisystem with 90 to go, 5'3". When I measured 51 inches, this book would have been little use to me without some tweaking of the largest size. Except for Vogue Knitting magazine which regularly slights the well-endowed, most books and magazines out there reach toward 46 or 50 inches. What makes this book special is the flattering and straightforward styles. I also watch both UK and NYC What Not to Wear, and these designs will truly flatter. I want to knit at least one of nearly every style in the book! Make elegant T-shirt tops nice enough for dress-up or office in the exact color you love... P.S. Mature women will be pleased, too, with styles that permit wearing a bra. No indecision about mutton dressed for lamb, just pretty shapes.
Disappointing.......2007-01-08
Although at first I was pleased to find a book devoted to patterns for larger sizes, I was ultimately disappointed. There are a couple of patterns that are kind of cute, most are nothing special, and there's very little variety here. More importantly, though, little thought seems to have been given as to what actually looks good on plus size women. The sweaters are almost all boxy, many with strange fringes. How many larger women look good with a bunch of bobbles hanging off their sweater hems? There are also a few patterns for not very exciting accessories like scarves (and a truly hideous hat that would make a wonderful clown wig done up in rainbow-colored yarn). There are also a couple of crocheted items, which are pretty much just taking up space in this book.
I give the publishers credit for using models who aren't all anorexic 12-year-olds. However, none of the models even approaches the larger sizes touted by this book, which helps add to the misleading idea that these patterns will look good on larger women.
This book especially suffers in comparison with "Big Girl Knits." Unlike this book, BGK has lots of information about customizing items for various body shapes. BGK also has a wide variety of patterns that make use of shaping, resulting in more flattering fits. My advice--borrow a copy of this book and see whether there's really anything here that interests you. And then go buy a copy of BGK.

Great Design Information.......2006-06-01
Great diagrams and design information for working with fabrics and patterns for plus-sized women.
Book Description
Over half the women in the U.S. wear a size 14 or larger, yet commercial patterns seldom come in plus sizes. Designer patterns are rarely available above a size 12. At the same time, it's often hard for women who wear larger sizes to buy attractive clothes, so many sew their own. Sewing for Plus Sizes is the first book to help home sewers who wear size 14 or larger make and adapt patterns and develop techniques for adapting designs for larger sizes. Designed to meet the needs of the basic sewer, Sewing for Plus Sizes guides the reader through such important steps as selecting designs, colors, and fabrics that will enhance their plus-size figures. It also shows how to adjust commercial patterns to fit unique dimensions and accommodate figure variations common to larger women. The author (herself a plus-size woman) writes in an upbeat, conversational tone that is as supportive as it is instructive. Stylish fashion photos of plus-size models wearing attractive clothing provide inspiration. Plus-size women will find this book a unique and invaluable resource.
Customer Reviews:
Book: Sewing for large sizes.......2007-09-23
The book is excellent in both content and quality.
The only downside for regions outside of the US, is that postage costs more than the product itself. Nevertheless, I am extremely pleased to own this book.
EXCELLENT RESOURCE.......2007-08-23
I WAS RECENTLY ASKED BY A FRIEND TO MAKE A BLOUSE. I WAS HESITANT TO MAKE THE BLOUSE BECAUSE IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I HAD MADE A GARMENT. IT DIDN'T HELP THAT MY FRIEND WAS RELUCTANT TO LET ME MEASURE HER AND THE PATTERN WAS NOT A TRADITIONAL CUT. I ORDERED THE BOOK IN THE HOPE THAT IT WOULDN'T BE ROCKET SCIENCE. WHAT A GREAT INVESTMENT! NOT TOO WORDY, GREAT ILLUSTRATIONS AND I WAS ABLE TO GO STRAIGHT TO THE INFORMATION I NEEDED TO KNOW AT THE TIME. THE BLOUSE FIT WONDERFULLY!
Pretty useless.......2007-08-06
I bought this book hoping it would have great ways to alter patterns for plus size women. It only had "add a few inches here" which anyone with basic sewing knowledge would already know. I was disappointed with it and feel it was a waste of money.
Changed the way I view sewing for myself.......2007-04-08
This book encourages you to stop sewing apologetically for your body, and to dress expressively regardless of your size. Other reviewers have commented that the author's recommendations regarding fabrics with large or bold patterns, or lots of fancy bling-bling are inappropriate for large women. The author makes it clear early on that dressing to look slimmer isn't the ultimate objective here.
The author models a lot of clothing in the photographs. She is brashly large and beautiful and clearly has no intention of trying to fade into the background, as so many large women are tempted to do.
I also love her language and her matter-of-fact way of handling large-women issues, such as extra strain on certain seams that should be reinforced, and fabric choice for our comfort. There's nothing giggly or abashed about it - in fact, it points the finger at the clothing industry for its insufficient and lame attempts to satisfy our clothing needs.
I also appreciated her explanations regarding why commercial patterns never seem to fit. First of all, designers aren't trained to design clothes for real women - they only work with size 8 mannequins. Secondly, pattern manufacturers generate plus-sized patterns simply by expanding out proportionally a "regular" sized pattern - and that's not how we're shaped. When we gain weight, we gain a lot in some areas and not so much in others, and we all do it differently.
I also now know that even if I don't have the exactly correct sized pattern, I can alter it to fit my measurements - something I haven't been as good at before. Now I can buy a lot more of those cool vintage patterns on Ebay!
Sewing for Plus Size.......2007-02-25
I did not find this book helpful. I feel that the fashion tips are ridiculous for plus size women. Checks, bright colors and huge caftan type clothing are certainly not flattering. I am a plus size and I would never wear any of the selections found in this book. They are loud, loose and make the model look like she even heavier than she is. I found Sandra Betzina's books, especially Power Sewing, to be much more detailed and helpful. The sewing techniques in this book are certainly not couture in my opinion. The techniques are quick, but the results are a home-made look and the fit is poor. The waistline techniques are amatuer at best. My skills are on the intermediate level and I did not gain any helpful information from this book. Having found better selections in the Sandra Betzina line of patterns and books, I gave this book away, because there is nothing I found in it that I consider worth my time.

Book Description
The publication by the University of California Press of Five Screenplays by Preston Sturges and Four More Screenplays by Preston Sturges has been applauded by cinephiles and admirers of the director's work, and recognized as a major contribution to the history of American cinema. In this third volume of scripts by one of Hollywood's wisest and wittiest filmmakers, the focus turns to those screenplays written but not directed by Sturges.
Included in the new collection are The Power and the Glory, which greatly influenced Orson Welles in the conception of Citizen Kane, and the romantic comedies Remember the Night and Easy Living. The scripts reveal Sturges in top form as a writer of dialogue and prove beyond any possible doubt his authorship of the films, which frequently appear indistinguishable on-screen from those he himself directed.
Full of surprises and delights, these Three More Screenplays are essential reading for students of American cinema and admirers of Sturges. They cast new light on his collaborations with directors Mitchell Leisen and William K. Howard, and provide a rousing conclusion to the writings of this Hollywood master. In his substantial introduction to the volume, film historian and screenplay writer Andrew Horton analyzes the contributions of Sturges to the film comedy genre and to Hollywood film history.

Essential.......2003-09-17
If you want to see what great screenwriting looks like on the printed page you should read Preston Sturges.

Interesting snippets, helpful annotations.......2004-09-26
This is a great little book. It has many of Mozart's most familiar quotes, as well as some less familiar ones.
The compiler and translator usually gives the source and background of each quote, which makes the book more valuable than if it were merely a collection of things Mozart wrote or said.
Here are a few of my favourites:
The most necessary, most difficult and principal thing in music is time [i.e. rhythm]
Above us is a violinist, below us another, next door a singing teacher who gives lessons, and in the last room opposite ours, a hautboyist. [oboist] Merry conditions for composing! You get so many ideas!
I have spared neither care nor labour to produce something excellent for Prague. Moreover it is a mistake to think that the practice of my art has become easy to me. I assure you, dear friend, no one has given so much care to the study of composition as I. There is scarcely a famous master in music whose works I have not frequently and diligently studied.

Book Description
"The purpose and scope of this little book will be obvious to the reader from even a cursory glance at its contents. It is, in a way, an autobiography of Mozart written without conscious purpose, and for that reason particularly winning, illuminating and convincing. The outward things in Mozart's life are all but ignored in it, but there is a frank and full disclosure of the great musician's artistic, intellectual and moral character, made in his own words."

Mozart's own words, edited by Friedrich Kerst and Henry Edward Krehbiel
Book Description
The player with a positional advantage has a better chance at a direct attack, and this complete guide by a grandmaster shows how to develop a more powerful strategic game. Key squares, bad bishops, pawn structures, other examples appear in ascending difficulty, with cross-references. For players at every level. 495 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Book for Chess.......2007-03-14
I recommend this book for any 1500+ ELO player who wants to improve their strategic game. A lot of the variations are given few comments, so a solid chess understanding and playing the moves on a board are essential. The book is organized into themes which any chess player can appreciate: discussion of good/bad knights/bishops, endgames, 2-bishops, bishops opposite colors, etc.
The Best Value For A Positional Chess Book!.......2004-08-18
This is an excellent book on chess. The diagrams are clear and can easily be followed through and the previous reviewer who commented that they were too small, was on my part greatly exaggerated and didn't do any justice. Buy one copy for yourself and decide. This book gave me countless hours of enjoyment and I am sure it will do the same for you.
Excellent Material for the Price.......2002-05-10
First off, this book is a compilation of strategic examples. The author groups these examples according to theme (Key Squares, Pawn Structure, Positional Sacrifices) and presents them with a few explanatory textual comments and variations. The author is far from prolix, so you should already understand the strategic themes and want to peruse a selection of illustrative examples and analyze them yourself. For the price, I feel this book is outstanding and one of the best of the Dover reprints. The author does not swamp the reader with Fritz like variations, but provides enough input to guide the independent reader on their way. For those formulating their approach to positional chess, the Positional Chess Handbook would be worth the $.
