Nice work by a little ungodly grandma.......2003-11-07

This book is a beautiful rendering of the seemingly simplistic and enchanting paintings by Grandma Moses. But something seems amiss when one finds that this artist lacked something on the spiritual side; for Kallir mentions something Moses once said: '"Someone has asked me to paint Biblical pictures," she once noted, "and I say no, I'll not paint something that we know nothing about; might just as well paint something that will happen a thousand years hence."' (Kallir 52).

Moses' enchanting pictures of everyday life, which become infused with something more than mundanity through such pleasant renderings, somehow seem starker with the knowledge that the artist lacked a faith in seeing something beyond such life scenes by only concentrating on what she considered "the factual and true."

Nonetheless, this is one of the best collections of her work, and it is embellished by many quotations by the artist. Moses' late start in the art world is also a testament that it is never too late to attempt lasting convocations of value. It is a pity that the elderly Moses did not believe that such things would last beyond her impending death.

THE REAL GRANDMA MOSES.......2000-04-11

This is a wonderful and beautifully illustrated book filled with Grandma Moses' life and her art work. I ordered it as a classroom aid for a presentation on her life, and I was amazed at how much was compiled in this selection. The biography is very thorough and her colorful landscapes are quite breathtaking. The captions along side her masterpieces give the reader an insight into this great folk artist, as well as critiques the art mediums she used to perfect them. This is a wonderful addition to any art teacher's library, as well as the classroom teacher, who is looking for an artist to help him or her teach the Disciplined Based Art with their students. I also recommend this book if you are having a hard day at the office, and you just want to slip into another more peaceful era. The nostalgia you will feel just looking at this woman's pictures is beyond words. It is also a very challenging book to help you reach for your dreams, no matter what your age is. If she could touch peoples' lives in her 80's, there is hope for everyone!

A little complete book.......2004-08-04

This book, although small in size, is full of interesting ideas. It is written to inspire, explain new techniques and show the process of designing knitwear. I have not come across another book that is similar in its dynamic. After reading the book I was ready to go to the drawing board and start creating a one of a kind sweater.

About as disappointing as you can get!.......2007-03-19

There's very little here for someone interested in learning John Prine songs. To advertise this as a tab book of any kind is pretty close to false advertising given how simple all the information is. John Prine doesn't sound anything like what's presented here. I'm not clear why this was published. I don't believe even absolute beginners would get much out of this book.

STRICTLY FOR BEGINNERS ONLY... BARELY.......2005-03-04

Neither the tab not the musical notation has anything to do with John's guitar playing on these songs; only the single note renditions of his vocals.
There are chord diagrams for each song that are relatively accurate, but they are not always in the key in which the songs were recorded.
If you imagined you were going to get some insight into John's fingerstyle approach you are very much mistaken.

I've been playing online at http://www.play65.com/index.html?did=13610 and increased my ratings from 1400 to 1700.
the section about the doubling theory was the most importan one for me.

This book really helped me improve my skills. There are two really good sections on Doubling. A nice chapter on the back game. Other topics are duplication, flexibility, priming, slotting.

For it's purpose, this book is excellent. But..........2006-02-06

Charushin wrote this book to give examples of, and to analyze, the double-bishop sacrifice which he names Lasker's Combination after this motif's most famous game. IN THIS CONTEXT the book is excellent: he examines "Canonical" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2.Qh5+ Kg8 3.Bxg7!!, etc.). "Shortened" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2.Bxg7!!, etc.), "Lengthened" Combinations (1.Bxh7+! Kxh7 2._____ 3._____ 4.Bxg7!!), etc. I think you get the idea.

Clearly, this is not a book for a beginner (I am a Class "A" player). Also, this certainly should not be your one-volume attacking guide! It is a specialized work, and examines a combination that admittedly does not appear very often.

Especially if you play systems such as the Colle-Zukertort with White (with one bishop on the a1-h8 diagonal, and the other on the b1-h7 diagonal) or similar set-ups as Black, this may be quite a good purchase. I recommend it anyway because it adds one more arrow to your attacking quiver.

When it comes to thinking out of the box, consider Charushin........2005-08-19

I have studied all five of Charushin's Tactician's Handbooks and this one is my favorite. In the introduction, there's a quote from Saviely Tartakower that alludes to the concept of, "What you've learned is safe is, in fact, not safe, so you still have to keep your guard up" (my words). This book does a wonderful job of teaching Lasker's Combination and you should also look at it as Lasker's Principle. You do have to practice it through actual play over the board. I've noticed that more experienced players tend to fianchetto when they see the King's Bishop getting posted, but you have to remember this is a strong attack being set up. I have won a few games using this tactic (of which you do have to know cold the certain nuances) and have enjoyed watching the expression of my opponent go from consternation to great concern as he tries to buckle down and plan a winning counter. To be honest, I have also lost quite a few games in attempting this tactic; you must practice it. However, losses notwithstanding, the training you undergo as you proceed through this book really gets you to think in such a different way even if your opponent becomes successful in making you do someting else. Lasker's Combination is an attack that, in most cases, has to be set up specifically, but there are very jaw-dropping alternatives that come from seeing Lasker's Principle (my words).

I also just love how Charushin shares with the reader his own story of chess in his life at the beginning of the book. This book has the most "over-the-shoulder" training from Charushin compared to his other books. It is a veritable eye-opener that makes you think outside the box.

Everyone, especially those in management, should read this book. We all deal with conflict and learning these few simple "no-brainer" tips will make it less stressful. It's not enough to know what you are talking about...you need to know who you are talking to.

This is a fine, short guide to managing conflict. Author Tim Ursiny particularly addresses those of you who are "conflict cowards," people who do not like conflict...and who does, outside of a few well-compensated litigaters? Ursiny himself is a confessed hater of conflict. He has hated it ever since he was a child and now, even though he's an executive coach and a fairly beefy guy, he still hates it. He is also a psychologist, and his style and approach have much in common with the work of other pop psychology writers, although this guide is more useful than most. Ursiny keeps the reading light by providing ample anecdotes and he invites readers to participate through several self-examination questionnaires. He provides some clearly written, easily accessible explanations of how conflicts occur and how to manage them. In fact, he defines conflict, its consequences and even its benefits so broadly that almost anyone fits the book's target audience. You got a problem with that? We doesn't and warmly recommend this entertaining, refreshing book, which - we agree - has something for almost everyone who'd rather duck than fight.

This book is phenomenal and the best I have read on the subject. Very few people have the experience Tim does, as both a psychologist and successful businessman, so he has great credibility. His system/process makes dealing with conflict a breeze. And I love his humor. I feel connected with him and trust his advice. I highly recommend this book!

A Great Tool.......2004-06-24

The Coward's Guide to Conflict is a great tool for every day life in the workplace and at home. Utilizing everyday people and situations Dr. Ursiny explains why we behave in the manner that we do and then gives tools to help change those behaviors to lead to more positive results and a better understanding of ourselves and others. It takes the fear out of conflict. It should be in every household and office.
