A Great Study Companion.......2000-07-11
I have had to study this book over the course of the past year as a required text for my college classes. Either my other required texts bored me or this one is just that good, but this is the only book I did not sell back at the close of the year. I admire the style Fiero uses to convey mountains of information surrounding the twentieth century. The rhetoric of the book is conducive to any reader of high school capabilities or above yet does an excellent job of avoiding the type of over-simplification which can lead to misunderstanding and ignorance on any of the subjects which Fiero writes about. Most study reference books created today require that you buy four other books to comprehend the information from the original reference. Fiero avoids that hassle. The information provided is never so technical as to perplex and confuse its reader, instead offering a steady flow of fact and critique that covers all bases and satisfies most any set of professors. This was the finest study reference I had available as it is more than adequately organized chronologically. The beginning and closing remarks at each chapter offer a synopsis that not only link all the information you have just read but similarly binds it to everything before it and establishes a foundation for what will come after it. This book is not meant for leisure reading so please do not buy it for such a purpose. However, as a study tool covering any aspect of the twentieth century, I could not recommend a finer addition to any materials you have than Fiero.

Book Description
It's not only fashion designers who leave their mark on a look: they'd be nothing without make-up artists and hairstylists. Odile Gilbert, one of the most creative hairstylists of all, finds herself in the greatest of demand these days. She works her fleeting, human materials into designs much as a sculptress would, borrowing from historical styles and ethnic languages of form, using feathers, earth and precious stones to fashion the most lavish of creations. This book sneaks a look behind the scenes of the fashion world and shows Odile Gilbert at work and alongside her finished creations. Her Style includes pictures of fashion shows, photographs for magazines and advertising campaigns. It is the result of many layers of fruitful collaboration: stylized with some of the world's best known fashion designers, photographed by the best fashion photographers and modeled on the most famous models of our time.

extreme couture.......2006-02-20
An extremely personal record of the inner workings of one of the most brilliant romantics to work in french couture. If you admire artists that follow their own vision (and a wonderfully extreme vision at that!) this "scrap-book" will forever inspire and delight you. Mr. Lacroix's strong interest in historical research, passion for color and textiles. and fascination with creating one-of -a-kind-looks for a dramatic, glamorous, accentric woman fills his book of ideas with an unusual richness. A true fashion original.
tear-off each page from this book, then frame it.......2000-06-18
each page is worth becoming a central piece of decoration in you bedroom or your entrance hall. Hand-written notes, collages, intimate comments. Everything in this book talks to the heart. You will love this masterpiece. More than a book!
Delve into the creative process of a famous designer.......1998-10-27
I recommend this as a must have for anyone interested in couture. It is a very detailed and revealing book on the working methods of Christian Lacroix. No other book follows the mind of a famous designer as he creates a collection the way this book does. It draws on Christian's very own notes and scrapbook. Great content, great visuals, great book!
Book Description
Colorful as Carmen Miranda, the paintings of Beatriz Milhazes are a malange of iconographic Brazilian imagery, drawing from folk art, crafts, jewelry, tropical nature, and the splash of carnival, all funneled through a modernist sensibility. Vibrant swirls, bold stripes, and intricate rosettes show both delicacy and sweep in a practice situated somewhere between figuration and abstraction. "Color is the core of my work," Milhazes says in an extensive interview with fashion designer Christian Lacroix included in this compact catalogue covering paintings from 1996 to 2004, originally exhibited at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Bignon, France. An essay by Simon Wallis of the Institute of Contemporary Art in London and an introduction by Fradaric Paul place this recent work within the context of her oeuvre.

disappointment.......2006-09-07
The photos are small, and the quality of the photos
not good. Lighting bad. Cheap lens.
The book is mostly type.
Too many art pieces that you
want to see better are ganged up on a page.
I guess it does give you some idea of Millhazes
style, but the woman is a design genius and deserves better.
Book Description
Christian Lacroix is one of the world's most admired and influential fashion designers, the embodiment of the style and glamour of French haute couture. This is his own account of his life and career, from his childhood in Arles to his arrival in Paris, where he was to meet his wife and partner, Franoise. Here his career started: from his first tentative steps at the House of Patou to his own label within the space of six years. In Lacroix's world visual imagery counts far more than words. Hundreds of lavish color and monochrome illustrations strikingly illuminate his story. Selected from Lacroix's sketchpads, his diary, his pinboard, and old family albums, they are interspersed with vividly remembered impressions that were the sources and springboards of his creativity--a mesmerizing Beaton portrait, the soft drapery of an Arlsienne costume, the feline face of an actress, the brio of a matador cape. Many sketches drawn especially for this publication decorate and complement the narrative. Fashion design, says Lacroix, is an area in which "processes beyond the reach of intellect are at work." Here we see into these processes. Memory, associations, and visual patterns from the conscious and the unconscious mind have fed his imagination to produce some of the most glorious and inventive designs of haute couture today.
Customer Reviews:
His Own Impressions.......2002-08-09
Fantastic! Christian gives a guided tour of his own work process, and personal advice as a professional designer. It's like reading his diary, or suddenly finding yourself as his closest confidant and assistant designer! He shares his own impressions of himself and his work. He shares details of how his personal life and his career developed - even from childhood- what inspires him, and what are his influences. Four stars because it's not a quick reference: dates, sources, locations not readily found.
A collage of souvenirs from a happy man........2000-05-14
Christian Lacroix brings coulours and light in each page of this book. In fact, this is more than a book; it is a personal gift made by Christian Lacroix to Françoise, his life, to his friends from Arles (where he was born) and to each invividual reader. Many hand-written comments, pink and yellow pages, naive inspiring rural objects. This is a perfect gift for somebody who already owns everything. Fresh, elegant, fashionable.
Book Description
Born in Arles in 1951, apprenticed in Paris at Hermes and Patou, and financed by the fashion mogul Bernard Arnault, Lacroix brought back extravagance and excitement to the fashion scene, and his appearance was spoken of as an event equal in importance to Christian Dior's New Look of 1947. Lacroix was a student of the theater, and his first collection was heavily influenced both by his theatrical background and by the folklore of his native Provence: an embroidered cross of Camargue intertwines a heart, an anchor, and a cross - representing love, hope, and faith - on a skirt that is itself inspired by the caparacon, the mattress-like blanket that protects horses in a bullfight. Lacroix's dresses have been considered, on occasion, too elaborate to be worn in everyday life, and it is in theater really that Lacroix can put to use the flamboyant genius that landed him on the front cover of Time magazine, an honor shared in the fashion world only with Dior and Armani.
Customer Reviews:
French Tart.......2000-10-06
Another great little book in the Universe of Fashion series! Christian Lacroix is one of the more "avantgarde" designers and apart from his "Notebook", there is nothing else available about him so it is great to be able to see some of Lacroix's bright and witty clothes here. A fabulous introduction to one of fashion's "alternatives"!

Book Description
This is the first book to examine the troubled relationships between women, Islam and cinema. Film critic and author Gönül Dönmez-Colin explores the role of women as spectators, images and image constructors in the cinemas of the countries where Islam is the predominant religion, focusing on Iran and Turkey from the Middle East, drawing parallels from Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, the two Central Asian Republics of the former Soviet Union, and Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia, the prominently Muslim Asian countries with a challenging film industry. Some of the relevant films made in India by and for Muslim Indians are also explored.
Dönmez-Colin examines prevalent cinematic archetypes, including the naïve country girl who is deceived and dishonored, or the devious seductress who destroys the sanctity of marriage, and looks well at controversial elements such as screen rape, which, feminist film critics claim, caters to male voyeurism. She also discusses recurring themes, such as the myths of femininity, the endorsement of polygamy and the obsession with male children, as well as the most common stereotypes, depicting women as mothers, wives and daughters.
Given the diversity of cultures, rather than viewing national cinemas as aspects of a single development, the author focuses on individual histories, traditions and social and economic circumstances as points of reference, which are examined in the context of social and political evolution and the status of women within Islam.
Women, Islam and Cinema is a much-needed and timely work that will appeal to the curious reader as well as to the student of film.

Book Description
These easy-to-read, progressive exercises by Joanne Martin develop a student's reading skills one stage at a time, with many repetitions at each stage. I CAN READ MUSIC is designed as a first note-reading book for students of string instruments who have learned to play using an aural approach such as the Suzuki Method, or for traditionally taught students who need extra note reading practice. Its presentation of new ideas is clear enough that it can be used daily at home by quite young children and their parents, with the teacher checking progress every week or two.
Book Description
Thirty entertaining, challenging mazes, involving 3-D constructions, directional arrows, designated stops, and more, are categorized by difficulty into five levels — from "No Brainers" that take about 5 to 10 minutes to solve to "Full Brain Overload," mazes that might take hours to find a solution. But there IS a "hints section."
Customer Reviews:
Pleased receiver!!.......2007-01-18
This was a gift for my fiance'. He loves mazes and I was worried it would be too childlike. Not so. This book really spans all ages and skill levels.
The most innovative book of maze puzzles since the 1980s!.......2006-12-21
After the "maze craze" began in the 1970s (at least, when printed mazes became available in books and magazines in forms that were challenging enough for adult solvers), the standard maze forms were those that could be seen in the works of Vladimir Koziakin, in which a line is drawn between "walls" from one point to another. These standard forms were quickly transcended by the groundbreaking works (in both a figurative and a literal sense, since he physically dug large mazes in the ground as well as drawing and painting them) of Greg Bright. Greg Bright's published works made widely available such innovations as "mutually accessible centers" (the spirals from which numerous paths intersect at their centers), geometric matrices, the "weave" in which illustrated paths are seen to cross over and under each other, mazes that contained no "dead-ends" (the difficulty arising from paths that keep looping back to ones already visited, rather than simply coming to a stop), and mazes that passed through pages and over the edges of pages (The Hole Maze Book). Also in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the works of Larry Evans and Bernard Myers brought lavishly illustrated 3-D perspective mazes into popular books (Supermazes No. 1, Three-Dimensional Mazes) that expanded the standard maze into the forms of elaborate architectural structures, cities, grids, etc. in which rooms, bridges, etc. formed the pathways and in which these could cross over and under each other. Since that time, maze innovations have primarily occurred in the realm of video games. (At least one exception, by Christopher Manson, did not take the form of a standard illustrated maze, and thus stands in near-isolation.) Thus, it has been about 20 years since a published work has significantly expanded the form and complexity of the printed maze puzzle. This book seems therefore to be a landmark in the genre. While incorporating past elements of "weave" and 3-D architectural designs, Wadzinski adds (or at least formalizes) new rules regarding directional pathways and overpasses, multi-objective mazes, three-dimensional "cube" mazes, and (as found in numerous video game puzzlers) "key" mazes in which items are available to pick up and use to go through doors and find new pathways. For anyone who thinks they have seen it all before, this book needs to be looked at and tried out!!! The maze puzzle is alive and well!

You aren't lost, you're just having an experience........2005-02-23
When I first came across this book,I expected to pick it up and after opening it,would feel disappointed. For some reason I expected it would fall short of its title of being "ultimate";but would be sort of artsy and not really good mazes.I guess that was because I've been enthralled with mazes, labyrinths, puzzles and all forms of Celtic artwork for a long time and have many books on these subjects.Anyway, I picked it up,opened it,and instantly I knew I'd never seen anything like it before.
David takes mazes out of the ordinary puzzle world and into a
world of almost a mystical experience, whatever that means. The art and design of these puzzles is nothing short of fantastic. The complexity only suggested by the most intricate Celtic knotwork design. On top of that, David incorporates color into his work that brings life to each of his masterpieces.
In his text he explains what he is trying to do with his mazes and how the solver is in a personal challenge with him on his journey through life.Isn't that really what all our lives are;a journey through a wonderous maze, full of little successes and disappointments all at the same time searching for the ultimate solution.?
In this book he gives us an explanation of each maze.I particularly was impressed by No.24,let me show you:
" Celtic Clover
The woven clover shape at the maze's center is adapted from a traditional Celtic rendition of the classic symbol of luck, and of a plant known for its gentle but powerful healing properties. The woven patterns in the green bands near bottom left and right of the circle and in the bottom half of the red outer circle shapes are also Celtic in origin. The patterns in the top half of the red circle are adapted from macrame. The thread is a universal symbol for divine energy. In fashioning the knots that helped make his fishing nets and shelter, primitive man who was also metaphorically tying the universal thread of life into specific forms that would sustain him during his lifetime.Ancient Celtic crosses were often rendered in woven patterns, and the knot is also one of the classic cross-cultural symbolic representations of infinity. The man and woman illustrated at top represent the yin and yang aspects of the maze. The green-clad,leprechaunlike gentleman carries the Celtic shillelagh or walking stick, which represents magic or wisdom, while his rosy-cheeked companion carries flowers representing femininity and fertility. The verdant colors of this maze evoke the lushness of Ireland. This maze will challenge you as it leads you in and out of its complex interweaving patterns, but it is also highly entertaining,as any visit with the Celts would surely be. "Like I said,David raises the maze to a higher level.
Now that your intrest has been kindled ,let me suggest you go to the 'David Anson Russo' web site and read more about him and his mazes. There are also other books of mazes and puzzles listed;along with several of his mazes to challenge you.Like his mazes his Website is excellent.

The Ultimate Maze Book is full of 39 diffrent maze. Each one as challenging as the next. Each maze has a story before it. It helps to place you in a mood for each maze. I like to time myself to see how fast I can do them. If you are lucky enough to find this book get some tracing paper because you won't want to ruin your book or photo copy the maze you want to do. Each maze is in beautiful color. Enjoy and have fun

Customer Reviews:
Informative, hard to plod through in places.......2005-03-02
The book has a lot of useful information about setting up and running small corporations.
Never Judge a Book by its Cover.......2005-01-23
This book provides vital information not usually covered in most self-publishing books and is a solid resource guide. Another confirmation that you need to read many books on your subject to familiarize yourself with the business. Areas such as how to protect your inventory by filing a UCC in the state the distributor is based, understanding the ins and outs of how distributors work, how to establish discounts and payment schedules that protect your financial structure, how to properly set-up your Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, taxes, LLC's, S Corporations, etc. Peter Hupalo's only weak area is his cover design. Anyone this intelligent should know their strengths and weakness's, and graphic design/layout is his. His book deserves better and would appeal to more buyers if it was redesigned.
Focus.......2004-12-30
I found the book focused more on C Corporations. A few of the chapters did focus on S Corps and it answered a lot of questions I had, and also raised more questions in the process. I found it did not go into real detail on S Corp deductions, or how to handle tax liability for an owner/employee.
The Book Saved Me Money.......2004-11-25
This book is, to me, misnamed. It's really about how taxes are collected on various types of business structures. It discusses the various business organizations such as sole proprietorships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and corporations. Under corporations both C and S corporations are covered. (I can't think of a catchy title to say that, so I guess the book can stay named as it is.)
Most of the book is on the S corporation. This makes sense as most small business should probably be S corporations. The small business isn't going to attract large numbers of investors. By shifting the income of the business to an S you can often save several thousand dollars in taxes by shifting between salary and dividends or what the IRS calls earned income and passive income.
When I got the book I had a couple of questions in mind like "how much salary should I pay myself." These questions aren't answered in most "how to incorporate" type books. What I wanted was two answers, what does the law say, and what are the real rules. I got both answers quickly and easily.
For me, the information I wanted was covered in about 10% of the book, the rest of the material I either knew or didn't care about. That 10% that I needed saved me many, many times the cost of the book.
Buy it with pre-tax dollars!.......2003-08-24
This is a great read for anybody considering incorporation or investing in an existing business. The author employs dozens of examples to illustrate the key decisions involved in choosing a business structure and how to manage it. Potential downside is given equal weight with potential savings, and often neglected issues affecting minority shareholders like "dilution" and "freeze out" are given a fair hearing.
The section on pre-tax vs. post tax purchases was particularly well illustrated. Find out why a $0.37 stamp may cost you $0.25 when you buy it through your business and $0.56 when you steal it from your personal stationary drawer. The author's conservative approach to accounting was refreshing in a world of books that profess to tell you how to beat the IRS. The strategies for maximizing shareholder income in this book are based on solid, legitimate planning.
The only fault I found with the book is that the number of examples led the author to be a little too imaginative with made-up business names. However, that wasn't enough to stop me from reading it from cover to cover in less than 24 hours.
