Full color masks and years of travel insight.......2006-04-13
The price tag of AFRICAN ELEGANCE represents a bargain for an oversized feature loaded with full-page color photos throughout: any university art library and quite a few community library general lending collections will find it an outstanding addition to any African cultures section. Author Etagale Blauer's years of travel in Africa lends to his feature and interpretation of the masks and ritual objects which are a part of African cultural beliefs and values. Displays link cultural traditions to materials, adaptations, and choices in artistic rendering. Highly recommended: a top value and a top pick.

A feast of wit and erudition.......2000-02-22
A feast of wit and erudition. Klawans, one of America's finest film critics, basically invents a new genre here, "The Film Folly". Klawans writes affectionately about this cinema of excess and over-exuberance - the world of Von Stronheim's Greed, Griffith's Intolerance and Carax's Lovers on the Bridge - mixing the insight of the sharpest critic and social historian with the sly whimsy of a coming of age narrative.
We are reminded of why Klawans has such critical staying power, why there are devoted legions of Klawans afficianados out there - he has the temper of a lefty aesthetician mixed with the humor of a Woody Allen. Sometimes one wonders when the jokes end and when the film criticism begins with Klawans. That's why is the jewel of American contemporary film criticism.
Disappointing.......1999-12-11
I was really looking forward to this book when I read Mr. Klawan's excerpt in Newsweek, but I have to say that the book disappointed me more often than not. The author seems determined to show us how educated he is by drawing parallels between these out-of-control films and the history of popular culture in the world society. All that really does is detract from his main throughline. The best passages were the ones regarding "Cleopatra" and "Apocalypse Now". The rest were interesting, but most of the time I was lost.

Wake Up Amazon!.......2007-01-25
Would someone at Amazon please wake up to the fact that the book "Modern Music" by Paul Griffiths and the CD "Modern Music" by some dumb rock outfit called Be Bop Deluxe have absolutely nothing to do with one another?! My stars are for the book, which is an insightful and comprehensive (also very well written) intro to real music in the late 20th century. It's a sad world when the glowing reviews of mediocre beat music take over a book covering the very real, profound and meaningful art music so sadly being utterly and universally neglected. And for no other reason than that the outfit in question gave their attempt a name it does not deserve (there is nothing modern about the popular jungle rhythms that dominate most conventional fare). Buy this book and leave the inarticulate sound-jungle behind you forever!
Customer Reviews:
A very nice little deck.......2007-06-07
This is a nice-sized portable deck. I've been enjoying my full-sized Universal Waite and wanted to get something smaller to carry with me sometimes. This deck is a good size for smaller hands and still has good detail in the images, unlike some of the miniature decks. What I like about the Universal Waite is that the lines of the drawings are finer than the original Rider Waite and the coloring is more shaded, making the pictures look less cartoonish. One difference between this deck and the standard size Universal Waite is the colors are a little different. The greys are darker and the reds are a little duller, as though the pictures were photographed in a different light for this deck. The result is that this deck doesn't look quite as bright as the standard size deck. However, another effect is that some of the more subtle pastel blending on the cards is more visible, which is appealing. Another difference is that this deck doesn't have the glossy coating of the larger deck. The packaging is excellent, a sturdy little box with a top that slides on. Too bad the standard size deck doesn't come in the same style package.
Not what I was hoping for, but not bad........2007-03-31
I ordered these because I like my larger (regular-sized) deck of Universal Tarot *so* much, and wanted something I could carry around. I got my deck today. My first thought was, "Eh. They're okay, I guess." I've now compared them to a pocket-sized original deck, and I guess I like them a little better. Enough to keep them. In comparison to the original RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith), the artwork is just more refined, with more detail in the shadows and such.
I do not, however, feel as though I got what I was hoping for. In comparing them with the large Universal Deck, the colors are more vibrant, which I don't like as much, but it's not just that, they are also more grainy.
For instance, if I compare the Ace of Swords, on the regular-sized deck, the sky is just a smooth grey. On the pocket deck, it's not only darker, but it has a noticeable grain to it. Now, whether this is better or worse may be a matter of personal opinion. I showed the difference to my husband and he liked the smaller one better. The one thing he mentioned was that on the pocket deck, you can see the radiance around the hand. On the large deck, you can barely see it.
On the larger deck, it's like there's a diffusion on it. That's the only way I can describe it. It gives it a softer, more subtle look. That's really what I was looking for, and what I like so much about the large Universal Deck. But, like I say, I think I probably like it more now that I've compared it to the original RWS deck, because the artwork does look much more refined and detailed.
I have several small decks: the original RWS in both mini and pocket size; Albino; LS Universal; and now this one. I was tired of the colors of the RWS and the Albino, and I'm not always in the mood to use the LS Universal, so I'll probably find this one useful. It's just not what I was hoping for. If you think you're going to get something that looks just like the large Universal Tarot, you won't. I do have to say, though, the backs on these are *awesome!* They're a very cool blue design with clouds and a yellow star.
A lot of people comment on the box. It *is* a nice box. I'm not sure how useful it will be carrying around, because it's pretty substantial, so just weight-wise, I'll probably put them in a bag, but it *is* very nice.
The one last thing I'll comment on is, I don't think the quality of the cards is quite as nice as the on the large deck. The large deck seems to have a much smoother finish. But the card weight seems to be fine. I think it'll be a useful deck. Now, I'll be interested if they ever decide to put out a mini or pocket-sized Radiant deck.
Caat
Addendum: July 19, 2007: I wouldn't change anything I've said about these cards, but I do need to say that the more I use them, the more I like them.

The Perfect Little Tarot Deck.......2006-11-30
This really is the perfect little tarot deck - it's just right in every way! The cards are just the right size for a take-along deck - not too small and not too large; they are slightly smaller than standard playing cards. The card stock is just right, too - not too thick and not too thin; not too slippery - just right. Very easy to shuffle, the edges of my two decks are very smooth and uniform. They also don't have a sticky coating or dreadful smell like some cards do.
The cards come in a nifty, strong box that protects the cards in your purse or pocket but doesn't add a lot of bulk. I put a rubber band around mine to be sure the lid stays on but I don't think you'd have to.
I love the coloring on these cards - again, just right - not too bright and not too subdued. They are a very lovely edition of the Rider Waite Deck. The backs of the cards are very nicely done, too - reversible with a large center star and clouds.
All in all - this is the perfect little tarot deck! The little white book that comes with the deck is very standard and doesn't have a lot of information - however, if you are familiar with the tarot you don't need the book and if you are a beginner there are many, many good books about the tarot that use the Rider Waite deck as a basis for study.
One book I highly recommend is Secrets of Tarot by Annie Lionnet - it is a small book about 4x4 inches but has lots of information about the tarot presented in a logical way. Since it is a small book it can be tucked in a purse or pocket as well.
I carry this deck in my purse with me everywhere!
Way to go! .......2006-10-29
This deck is an ideal size -- large enough to read comfortably (not tiny, like other minature decks I've tried to use), yet small enough to take anywhere. Plus, this little beauty comes in its very own attractive, sturdy box -- the cards are well-protected from the vagaries of handbag or pocket travel. No worries here -- the box lid fits well and doesn't fall off (although I must admit I secured mine with a rubber band, just in case!). The weight of the cardstock feels substantial, without being too thick. The edges feel polished, no roughness whatsoever. The cardstock is protected with a smooth matte finish, which shuffles well, and compliments Mary Hanson-Roberts' color beautifully -- a color so lucious, I could eat it with a spoon! The back design is completely reversible and totally beautiful -- it looks like a blue evening sky filled with blue clouds, which have parted to reveal an amazing 8-pointed golden star. I love this deck -- I won't go anywhere without it!
Needs a better cut and stock.......2005-01-29
This deck is a very nice travel size. I even like the little card holder. The only thing I did not like was that they were very difficult to shuffle. The reason the cards are so difficult to shuffle is the card stock seems just a tad thick and the major reason is because the cut is not clean. They are quite staggered. I got a sharp razor and very carefully began lining them up and shaving about 15 at a time gradually, over and over, shuffling then starting again. After I got them very close to the same sized the shuffle was much smoother. On a lighter note the coloring and detail are excellent. I am glad I got the cards, I just wish the stock and the cut would have been better.

Incorporating your Business for Dummies.......2006-03-18
The book gave a good review of the different types of Incorporation. The type that might be best for any business desired with different requirements and tax advantages of each type. Whether one has partners makes a difference in type needed or whether one wants to sell stock in their company or not.
For a primer it is good but one needs a more in depth knowledge or a tax expert to really get more out of the type of incorporation wanted.
Good as a starter, but you will need more........2004-03-07
Inc for Dummies is not just for dummies, it is a good book on How To Incorporate, but you will need more.
Some additional books icnlude How To Incorporate: A Handbook for Entrpreneurs and Professionals by Michael R. Diamond. How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need to Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown. S- Corporations by Robert Cooke.
Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and The Small Business Kit by J.W. Dicks.
Use the dummies book as a starter guide. Use the other books for the real meaty information. Be careful what you buy, the marketplace is proliferated with books by self proclaimed experts who read a lot but have no real world experience.
just the tip of the iceberg.......2004-02-27
In order to maintain the legal status of your corporation, you need to pass very specific resolutions and keep very specific records. I had hoped for a "cookbook" for the legal steps required to set up and operate my corporation, but this is not it.
The info on corporate structures is very basic and general - you could easily find this level of detail on the web. That's my primary complaint with this book... it mentions what you must do, but doesn't give you the specifics of how.
Instead of this book, I recommend you:
(1) Get the *basics* from your lawyer or accountant (or even doing some research on the web)
(2) buy The Corporate Minutes Book by Anothony Mancuso instead of this book!
Good book for those contemplating a corporation.......2004-02-23
If you are contemplating starting a business and therefore a corporation, this book is a great first start. As with all of the dummy series books, the authors feel that people reading these books are brand new and know nothing. So this gives even the most naive a good start on how to incorporate.
So much of the information is basic and since the book was written awhile ago, some of the material may be dated. Nonetheless, good first start for business people.
Other good books include How To Start a S-Corporation by Robert Cooke and Brilliant Deductions by Wade Cook. The latter shows a way to drop out of the social security system and offers a good section on Nevada Corporations.
Okay, but not enough meat.......2003-12-01
I thought that this book was an okay read but left some very important information out especially regarding S-Corporations.
The best book I have found on S-Corporations is How to Form a S-Corporation by Robert Cooke.
