THE NUDE: A STUDY IN IDEAL FORM, a classic investigation and summation, is one of scholar/historian Kenneth Clark's finest works - and that is high powered praise in view of all of his contributions to literature. Few writers inform with such dignity of prose, style, and warmth as Clark and THE NUDE is no exception. This handsome and illuminating volume dates back to 1953 and is based on six lectures given by Clark for the A. W. Mellon Lectures in Fine Arts at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Clark opens his book with a lyrical treatise "The Naked and the Nude" in which he not only introduces his manner of examining the use of the nude as pictorial image for artists from ancient Greece through the Renaissance to the present, he wraps his scholarly information with personalized psychosocial commentary that is uniquely his own and allows the reader to settle in for the exploration ahead.
Approaching first the male nude ["Apollo"] from the Kouros of 600 BC through the vases, sculptures, reliefs, and paintings from all periods of history, he then moves to two views of the female nude - Venus I [the celestial female form] and Venus II [the woman of earthly form]. Having laid the foundation for the use of the nude in general, he then addresses the artistic emotions of Pathos, Energy, and Ecstasy in a manner that is near novel-like in reading. He closes his lecture series/book with a thought-provoking discussion of how man has viewed the nude through history, vacillating between laud and honor to the depiction of guilt, of the human stain. And finally he demonstrates in "The Nude As An End In Itself" both the occult appropriation of repeated forms and the acknowledged plagiarism of the nude studies from the earliest to the current. The Book is generously illustrated but in the paperback version available the illustrations are in black and white only. This profound and warmly human book is a must for artists and art lovers alike. Highly Recommended. Throws light into the corners of a subject often misplaced........1998-04-16
Would you want to read someones recollections on art gone by, I doubt it. Perhaps you want to hear the love-less dissection of art by an academic, probably not. Maybe you'd like to see someone capture the beating heart in a subject that by it's very nature evokes stares, of course you do Malcolm. Lord Clark draws you into his diction, not because he wants you to bear witness to the eloquence of his analysis, but because he has remembered that there is more to seeing than meets the eye.
A well thought out discussion of the Western tradition.......1997-06-05
Whether you are a student of the arts, religion, history, or life you will learn from this work. Mr. Clark speaks with the authority of an educated and thoughtful expert on the subject and with the voice of a formidable author as well.
His work is as densely packed with meaning as you might expect to find in the writings of Reinhold Niehbur yet is possessed of a wonderfully literary mask. The writing is so well done, one might accidently read right over the meaning in the haste of seeing what will come next.
If you're the highlighting or underlining type, I'd recommend saving such marking for the second read as more of the true significance bubbles to the fore. Put aside your expectations of a "typical" art history text and prepare for an incredible enlightenment.

No Drafting Instructions!.......2007-07-09
I was looking for books on drafting patterns for children's clothes and this book looked promising. The book is from former instructors at FIT, after all.
This book doesn't talk about drafting basic bodices, it does have a sleeve, pants and skirt draft, though.
Instead it shows how to drape a bodice on a child's dress form. I can't afford a woman's dress form, let alone a child's. No child is going to stand still, especially if they are just learning to walk, like mine is. It is hard enough to get my husband to stand still while I drape him.
The measurement charts in the back were interesting to me though.
The Metric/Imperial conversion chart was also useful.
Over all I was very disappointed.
basic instructions for flat pattern & drape of childrenswear.......1998-12-28
This book is a basic instruction in the construction of childrenswear. It includes infant layette, boyswear, girlswear, how to find trims,& how to drape basic bodies to make a sloper. It gives directions on how to flat pattern jackets, pajamas, sleepers, skirts, pants and hoods. I am a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in childrenswear and this is the textbook we use in our class. It was written by two professors who once directed the childrenswear department and have seince retired. The most helpful thing about this book is the tables in the back which give the measurements of the adverage infant, 2t - 4t, 6x, and 7 - 14. These tables can help you if you are flat patterning a very difficult garment and you must know, for example, what the neck to arm measurment is on the adverage 10 year old boy. The instructions are easy to follow, however, would be even easier to follow if they were numbered and the diagrams were labeled. You must bring your own creativity to this book because it just shows you the basics, nothing fancy. Overall I would say it was very helpful in my courses.

Examining the evolution of American film comedy since the beginning of the sound era (c. 1930), Christopher Beach focuses on how language, class, and social relationships in early sound comedies by the Marx Brothers, the screwball comedies of the 1930s by Capra, Sturges and others, and 1950s comedies of Frank Tashlin and Vincente Minnelli, and contemporary films by Woody Allen, Whit Stillman, and the Coen brothers. Beach argues that sound and narrative expanded the semiotic and ideological potential of a film, providing moments of genuine social critique and also mass entertainment. Christopher Beach teaches at the University of California, Irvine, and has taught at the University of Montana and Claremont Graduate University. Even if you've seen and memorized the entire movie, you probably won't be able to fight your way through The Phantom Menace PC game without breaking a sweat. This is a fairly challenging game and one that can be quite frustrating in some areas. To help minimize your frustration, Prima's strategy guide for The Phantom Menace offers a complete, well-illustrated walkthrough for each of the game's 11 sections. Additionally, the book provides a quick rundown of every character in the game, along with a brief description of the many weapons and objects you'll encounter. The walkthroughs are fairly easy to follow, thanks in large part to the plentiful screenshots that illustrate important events and locations. Also, the book calls out secret areas as you encounter them in the walkthrough, so you won't miss any hidden goodies in your travels. However, this strategy guide is a little thin in some areas. There are no cheat codes included, and the book sometimes provides skimpy advice with no explanation. (For example, at one point you read that you should not let Queen Amidala trail too far behind you, but you are not told what will happen if you do.) Still, it's a good resource for making your way through a difficult game. If you're battling your way through The Phantom Menace and are running into obstacles that you can't quite overcome, this book can certainly help. This is one of the most best strategy guides for my game. I got stuck on Level 2, and now with this guide I'm on level 9. Why, it even tells you what dialogue options to say! And finally, it reaveals a way to get rid of those pesky destroyer droids! No nook, no cranny, is left untouched in this book. A MUST BUY.....
Neccesary to finish the game........1999-06-30
I couldn't even finish the first level until I bought this book! Now, five days later, I'm on level nine. This book includes helpful maps and tells where all the secret areas are. I just wish it included some cheat codes.

As a 12 year old boy with many games I rarely see a book as good as this one, And believe me, I have seen alot of strategy guides. The pictures and maps are very helpful and there is even little boxes that have hidden secrets in them. I have found that Prima has by far the best strategy guides. Believe me this is a GOOD BUY!!!!!!
Great for Star Wars fans who are game novices.......1999-06-09
As a fifty year old father of an eight year old son fascinated with Taikwondo and Star Wars, I was delighed to find this guide. Much more detailed the the user manual with maps and shortcuts and ways to avoid being wiped out. Some of the images are difficult to see, but it manages to get you through the game. We are only three levels deep in a dozen level game as I write this review, but I have enjoyed having a place to go when we get stuck. There are several walkthroughs on the web, which I also recommed, but none with annotated pictures and all the secrets pointed out. This is our first non-educational game (along with Star Wars Racer) and our first experiecne with gamepads and 3d accelerators (my son catches on so much quicker than I) and we are having a ball. I read and he does the dirty work. Lots of fun. Thanks

I enjoy Ray's work. His book walks you through the financial planning process and clearly illustrates how it is done right. The first step of the process is factfinding and educating. The second is suggesting solutions. Ray's mastery of the process shines through and provides enough information to help you get started with your own plan.
Something for Everyone...........2007-04-05
This is an excellent book for the beginner to the more sophisticated person to consider when managing your retirement funds. Ray gives thoughtful insight into the potential investment strategies for three different "buckets of money". The difference in the 3 buckets is the time horizon the funds will be needed and the various amounts of investment risk that could be assumed in each time period.
His plan makes amazing sense and I have utlized it successfully in my personal retirement plan (I am 46 & retired) and my mother's (who is now 70 1/2). I have listened to Ray's business talk show for the past several years and also seen him speak at a free weekend morning seminar in Portland, OR. His personal judgement and that of his "brain trust" is safe, sound and easily followed.
I have purchased this book for myself and multiple family members/friends for their consideration. It has always gotten favorable reviews. I just purchased his newest book, "Ready..Set..Retire: Financial Strategies for the Rest of Your Life". I am anxiously awaiting it's delivery for any new information he has to share!

Whenever a financial advisor's starts to speak, I yawn intellectually. There are so many products and financial terms that I can't grasp it all. Enter Lucia with a plan so simple that even I can understand it. I loved listening to the "The Ray Lucia Show" and the book did not disappoint me.
