Book Description
The Six-Gun Mystique Sequel is a revised and considerably expanded edition of The Six-Gun Mystique, a pioneering study of the Western as a popular genre that has been widely influential since its original publication in 1970. In this expanded version, Cawelti revises his analysis of the structural characteristics of the Western novel and film, synthesizing much of the rich discussion of the Western genre that has appeared since The Six-Gun Mystique's original publication.

Some Real Strengths, but Also Some Weaknesses.......2006-01-26
This relatively inexpensive book still features crisp, beautifully reproduced illustrations. A real strength is the frequent inclusion of the full photographer's mount instead of cropping to the image. Setnik also finds it important to record where an image is taken, showing that she is aware that there were geographically specific fashion trends. The author attempts to combine her knowledge of costume with the history of photography. (These topics are often published separately.) The result is helpful. A major weakness is the lack of strong, dated examples. The author instead has written the history, and then found pictures to illustrate it. Consequently, the book is really the history of costume of the middle to upper class. Lower income groups, trades and ethnicity are not the subjects of this book. In my opinion, Setnick also over-generalizes when it comes to "poses" and "backgrounds". It is very difficult to rely on either for dating.
The best book for ID of 19th C. clothing.......2004-12-04
This is a great book for anyone who collects victorian clothing. It is the one I refer to when trying to find the date of a particular piece. It goes into the detail of what was fashionable for the bodice, skirt, sleeve, etc. broken down into approximately two-six year periods. The pictures are of old CDV's so you can see how the dresses were actually worn (most originating from California). There are no pictures of period garments up close as some other books have. Still, the best book at mentioning fashions in detail for dating and illustrates tricky terms such as basque and cuirass bodices.
Must have reference. . . ........2003-08-28
What a wonderful reference book to have! It is well thought out and researched and the text is illustrated perfectly with beautiful period photographs. So much detail about period costume is included and organized, decade by decade, that this is a must have reference for any collector of antique clothing. Both the novice and experienced collector will find new information here!
Recommended for students of fashion and costuming........2000-05-03

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat disappointing.......2001-05-27
The buyer should know that a large majority of the patterns have blouses in the leg of mutton style. Since this was not what I was looking for I had to send it back. However the patterns did seem to be historically accurate.
Historic Tailoring Tips Revealed.......2001-04-27
Have you ever wondered how they made those lovely turn-of-the-century gowns? This book tells you how they did it! A reprint of a 1905 Butterick sewing book, it is intended for readers who aready know how to sew, as no beginning techniques are included. Full of vintage photographs and detailed instructions, this book gives step by step procedures for many tailoring techniques which we rarely see on anything but designer wear. These techniques can be applied by any seamstress to produce a more fitted and tailored look to their fashions. Definately worth owning for any costumer or fashion designer looking for a more romantic and tailored look in their fashions.
1890s Sewing Patterns.......2001-02-17
This book contains sewing patterns drawn from the same issues of the magazine _The Voice of Fashion_ as Dover's earlier collection _59 Authentic Turn-of-the-Century Fashion Patterns_. Both books contain patterns for the 1890s. This book focuses more on women's patterns; the other book contains many children's. I collect original issues of _The Voice of Fashion_. This magazine was published from 1886 to 1909. Every issue mirrors the season's changing styles. I am glad to see an anthology that makes the 1890s patterns more widely available. One note for seamstresses enlarging the patterns--the measurements on them are not inches, or metric. They are for a patent drafting system that is not included with either book.
A Must.......2000-11-26
A must have book for anyone interested in Late Victorian clothing. The introductions gives a basic review of drafting methods, with careful reading and patience (lots of it!) the patterns are easily drafted to modern measurements. You can't beat the price for the number of patterns you get.
A class of their own........2000-06-16
Good techniques for a lost art. Anyone who enjoys sewing authentic Victorian clothes, not just Victorian-styled clothes should buy this book.

Book Description
Cecil B. DeMille, David Selznick, Louella Parsons, Joan Crawford--these legendary men and women built an empire called Hollywood. In Movie Crazy, meet another group of powerful players who shaped the film industry--the fans. MGM, for example, struggled to find a screen name for an actress named Lucille LeSeur. A fan--one of thousands who responded to a contest sponsored by the studio--called her Joan Crawford. Using fan club journals, fan letters, and studio production records, Samantha Barbas reveals how the passion, enthusiasm, and sometimes possessive advocacy of fans transformed early cinema, the modern mass media, and American popular culture. Barbas sheds new light on the development of the cult of celebrity in America, and demonstrates that while fans were avid consumers of the film industry, they did not mindlessly accept the images presented to them by the studios. Fans reacted to movies and stars with excitement, anger, confusion, joy, or boredom. Far from a united force, fans were often complex, and never predictable.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting History.......2002-10-17
I really liked this book. I expected it would take me a month to read, a little here and a little there, but I found it surprisingly exciting and finished it in just one week. I am not a film historian but I am a silent film buff and was especially impressed by the sections on Florence Lawrence, Rudolph Valentino, etc.
The overall thesis is quite persuasive - that it was movie fans, as much as studios, executives, etc. who really determined the quality and character of American movies, at least through the 1950s. Even when studios misled fans (as in their portraying Clark Gable as a rough-and-tough guy in real life), they were doing so because they had already determined what fans wanted in the first place. This book is very well written and free from the sort of annoying jargon that is only of interest to specialists. There is a LOT of information here and a useful index as well. Highly recommended.
Pretty good.......2002-05-02
As a primer on the cult of celebrity and the history of film fandom, this is a nice little book. For those who have read dozens of film books, there's not a lot new offered here but it's still a good read. Barbas does a very good job of analyzing the habits of fans and the studios' view of fans. I would have liked to see a further discussion of the fury of Internet-era fandom (Ain't It Cool, etc.) but that's perhaps for another book.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2005-08-12
I was extremely disappointed by this book. I bought it because of the high rating it had and extremely high cost, but it turned out to be a simple book with a spiral binding, almost like a photocopy for 55 DOLLARS!!!!
I bought 2 other books for teaching piano at half the price and twice as good. Don't be fooled by the price and ratings, always check the table of contents.
Probably great for music teachers--not so useful for parents.......2002-04-04
I disagree with the reviewer who found this book useful for teaching her child herself. I read it, and found only two chapters that were useful for the teacher working with just one student. The rest of the book dealt with organizing and running lessons for many children, screening potential students and their families, and organizing "piano parties" (a more student-friendly form of recital). This homeschooling parent didn't find enough useful information to convince me to buy the book.
Most Practical book I have Ever Read!.......2000-09-30
Real information and games you can use to teach the child the most important aspects of music training and appreciation. Not only useful for the piano teacher but also for the general music teacher. Concepts of rhythmic awareness, high-low, loud-soft, notation, ear-training, techinque, etc. are being fostered through games and language that any child from 3-8 can understand. Thank you Rhoda Rabin!!!
Give your child a gift of music!.......2000-06-26
This book has got a great technic to teach young children the art of playing piano/keyboard! It has a wonderful approach, including fun games, that will hold your child's attention while they learn! I am a homeschooling parent, so I am a teacher of all subjects and really enjoy when a book makes my job, as a teacher, easier. Most music teachers aren't willing to teach young children, so this book is a wonderful resource for parents who wish to introduce their young child to the fantastic world of music. This book will not disappoint!
Book Description
This book includes 110 puzzles, not as individual problems but as incidents in connected stories. The first 31 are amusingly posed by pilgrims in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Additional puzzles are presented using different characters. Many require only the ability to exercise logical or visual skills; others offer a stimulating challenge to the mathematically advanced.
Customer Reviews:
A hard book but it repays one's efforts.......2005-12-11
I have owned this classic for a long time and often return to it for amusement. The degree of difficulty of the puzzles ranges from the trivial to mathematics degree standard and it's not always easy to tell in advance how hard each puzzle is.
It is very satisfying to get one of the puzzles right and reading Dudeney's ingenious solutions to the harder puzzles is a pleasure in its own right. One answer is calculated to 58 decimal places - not easy without a calculator unless you are HE Dudeney.
I would recommend other recreational maths books such as Martin Gardner's ahead of this one, but if you're into tricky puzzles this is certainly worth buying.
A fun mathematical book.......2004-04-23
Henry Dudeney (1847-1930) was one of the inventors of mathematical puzzles. This little book can be considered a fun educational math book to encourage the use of logic and visual skills. I do not feel that this book is for those who are weak in mathematics. Although, it could be used as a tool to expand one's mind in that area. And if all else falls-the answers are in the back of the book. I found it to be a fun book.

Didn't suck that bad.......2007-09-14
Sheesh, after reading most of these reviews, I guess I disagree with you all. I actually liked this book.
extravagant business book.......2007-09-05
Think like a billionaire review.
Every time after reading a book i always try to write a review. because i can remember the story and the impressive parts at least through reviews. A few month ago i bought a book ' Trump's 'think like a billionaire'. virtually I never thought i do a business.
i never concerned about appearance before, how to dress and groom, beauty, fashion...and so on. But now i became a businessman. i have to think of my wordrobe every morning. and i have to go shopping to buy clothing for work every weekend. and sometimes browsing website getting information fashion news and getting nice fashion style. it comes to one of my work for business. i've been going school for 21years. elementary school 6yrs, middle&high school 6yrs, undergraduate 4yrs, graduate for master degree 3yrs, and for phd degree 2yrs past already and the sum of those schooling yrs is 21yrs. OMG!!!
and i used to work at the Korea Government Organization for 3yrs. it couldn't say i did a business job. that means i never used to involve to business world. But these day i realized that i'm a quite business-oriented girl. Even though there are so many annoying and irritating things around me, but doing business is pretty exciting job. I'm not interested in the money thing. But i'm so concerning about accomplishing something. maybe i'm a ambitious girl? or overambitious? Trump said 'billionaires love their jobs, not because their jobs make them wealthy, but because they wouldn't have become so wealthy doing something that they hated. You have to love what you're doing, because then it won't seem like work to you and you will bring the necessary energy to profit from it. That passion alone will take care of ninety percent of any problems with any job ^^;
Anyway the reason i pick up this book is that i'm so exciting to know how the successful people managing their life and how they think, what kind of life they plan ..something like that. my opinion on this book is that this book is so funny and easy reading. i could notice he is so selfish and proudy himself, arrogant, ostentatious but funny, humorous, and audacious. and this book seems like kind of advertisement of his TV show 'The Apprentice' He is so proud of his TV show(Actually i don't like this show..so boring). But there are many things i should follow him and need to learn. that's why i'm writing this review. i need to memorize those sentences in this book. not because of my successful business but because of just my future life. For example Trump said ' Another way to pinch pennies is to avoid the brand names when it's necessary. I obviously buy brand names when the brand is tied to a priduct's quality. Golf equipment, jewelry, and clothing are good examples of brand as a signifier of quality. But aspirin is aspirin, shampoo is shampoo, and cereal is cereal, so don't throw away your money on packaging and advertising'
As a matter of fact we just used to learn how to make a money, usually nobody teaches us how to use money. this sentence is one of examples how to use money. For a long time i've been thinking to purchase brand names luxury products such as high-end, expensive watches, bags, cars. are useless, just extravagant. But I changed my mind if those products could make somebody confident, it's good thing.Trump said ' People want to do business with people who look good, and if you look like crap, you're not going anywhere' ,' you should invest in some high-quality items that you can rotate throughout your week.'it takes money to make money, and clothing is always a good invest' . I agree with him. if we want to doing good business, let's invest for our clothing and accessaries.
We used to criticize people who did plastic surgery for beauty. it comes to purchsing brand names luxury products.
Now i like brand names bags, watches, clothings...i stopped criticizing them ^^ i'm sorry.
If you want to be good businessman, want to manage your money well. just read this book lightly. it's not thick, and easy reading,
Best sentences in this book
The more you have , the more you can give
Good investors are good students
Education is a money machine
a slow starter is always the fastest finisher
someone is disloyal to you once, they will be disloyal to you again
Compliments work better, and sometimes silence is the best form of criticism available.
Outstanding.......2007-09-03
This is an excellent read for anyone looking to cultivate the traits of a winner in business and life. Donald Trump is one of the most insightful people on the planet. He cuts through the clutter on every type of business and personal issue and gets to the heart of what's really being said or done. Read this book for the broad insights, not just single how-to specifics.
He shows how you too can cultivate the same successful traits he has been blessed with. For those Donald detractors - realize that his ego is a big part of who he is and is what drives him (and all other overachievers). Just get over it and learn.
You're Fired!.......2007-06-05
Sorry for the corny title, but it was obvious. This was a true disappointment.
Every section of the book (and there are 5) is made up of "Chapters" in fact there are 67 sections to this book - which is just an excuse to insert blank pages, and start the next page half way down the page. Talk about a book printed full of "air" - of the 263 pages, over 60 were BLANK!! The information was mediocre at best and only scratched the surface of any topic. It is also interesting to note that the book is titled "Think Like a Billionaire" and the final section of the book (40 pages) is about the participants of the apprentice show and has nothing to do with the subject of the book.
I must however say that Mr. Trump is probably the only person around who can take such garbage, sell it to the public - and get away with it!
He is indeed an amazing businessman, but don't waste your time with this poor excuse of a book.
Awesome Book !!!.......2007-05-18
If having a billionaire mindset is what your looking for then you have found the right book. This book differed from a lot of Trumps other books a bit. I love the way he gave pointers on life. This book gives you a more pesonal look at Trump and his orginizaton and deals with how he thinks through sitiuation. I would diffinately add this to my business book collection.
