Ridin', ropin', and bleepin' . . ........2007-02-12
The risque title of this book may be a little misleading. It's actually a thoroughly researched anthology of cowboy songs by a folklorist with plenty of credentials. Logsdon was director of libraries and a professor at the University of Tulsa. For anyone who has read and wondered about the alleged bawdiness of cowboys (early western historians were prevented by editorial restrictions from being very specific), this book will remove all doubt. Of the 61 songs included, many are unexpurgated and unembarrassed evidence that cowboys had more than cattle drives and roundups on their minds.
The book includes a lengthy introduction about song collecting, with an extensive preface to each song, noting its publication and recording history and variant versions. Songs are illustrated with a wonderful series of full-page vintage photographs by cowboy photographer Erwin Smith and others. There are bios of the six contributors to the collection, including Dallas "Nevada Slim" Turner and Baxter Black. Logsdon has also included a long history of cowboy music, ranging from its origins in the pre-cowboy South to the annual cowboy poetry gatherings at Elko, Nevada. There's a glossary of terms for those unfamiliar with cowboy lingo, plus a 22-page bibliography and helpful index. Recommended for everyone from the serious folklorist to the western enthusiast.
A fine study of cowby songs, honest and thorough.......2001-03-06
It is rare to find a book which is written not only with an enthusiasm and love of the subject matter but with a scholar's attention to detail. When you find a book that contains both, you often find a gem - and this book is that gem. There is a wide range of material here, everything from Songs about Cowboys to Other Songs Cowboys Sing (including the most bawdy and less well-known pieces). Gives a well-rounded view of the cowboy's real life, not the prettified picture that many books contain. The author, Guy Logsdon, lectures and performs as a Cowboy Poet and Singer and has published widely on cowboy songs and poetry. An extensive glossary and bibliography are included in the book.

If You Can't Afford Manolos, This Book is the Next Best Thing!.......2005-12-21
What is it about women and shoes??? Stephanie Pedersen's "Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know" is an awesome history of shoess from past to present. The photos are delicious, and I enjoyed reading about the history of shoes.
One of my favorite sections in the book was "Red Shoes", which was all about the sexual power of scarlet pumps. The adage "red shoes, no knickers may or may not be true, but I ain't tellin'!
If you have more than two pairs of shoes in your closet, you'll love this book!

a stylish gift.......2005-12-12
I am enjoying Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know so much that I have decided to order a few copies for my more stylish girlfriends as a Christmas gift. The book effectively describes how a woman's image is often shaped by her own shoes. Shoes described range from sexy -- I love the chapter on the stiletto -- to elegant and graceful, such as the chapter on shoes of the silver screen in the 40s.
The author, Stephanie Pedersen explains how shoes have been worn by women as a symbol of sensuality. Not only did I learn about the history of shoes from this stylish and reasonably priced book, but I learned about fashion, design and culture. Pedersen's artful descriptions coupled with the colorful images have really inspired me to consider my own shoe collection and what is says about me. After reading this book, I want to go on a little shoe shopping spree to add a few pairs to my own collection -- the book heps one to understand what shoes can say about one's image.
Now that shoes from the 20s, 30s and 40s are making a comeback in modern fashion, it is even more fun and interesting to read about how those styles were influenced by the trends, attitudes, movie stars and even dances of those decades. My favorite sections are "1923: The Charleston," "1939: Red Shoes," from the chapter "The Jazz Years." Also, "Shoes of the Silver Screen" from the Chapter on the Hollywood Years, and the section on Sex and the City from the Chapter, "The Designer Years."
The first chapter of the book is excellent, and fills you in on the fascinating history of shoes, with interesting bits of information such as the cultural attitudes in Asia and fashion trends in the late Middle ages, when Florence was the fashion capital of the world.
This is a book you will read again and again, and want to keep handy to refer to often to inspire you to consider shoes as a part of your own style, and certainly to show to all your friends. You will learn something about yourself from this book because it helps you to understand what your shoes say about you! Whatever image you want to convey from sexy to confident, graceful to elegant - this book will help you understand which shoe styles could help you make the precise statement you want about yourself and your sense of style and originality!
Shoes glorious shoes.......2005-12-06
You don't have to be Carrie Bradshaw to love this little book, beautiful and fascinating if you love shoes this book will give you lots of delightful insights into the way shoes have evolved. Lovely photographs and the writing is delicious. Make a wonderful stocking stuffer for the shoe-shopper in your life.

One would think Shoes: What Every Woman Should Know would be another historical survey or a shopping guide: actually, it's both under one cover: a history and a consumer's guide with lovely color photos following, literally, the ups and downs of shoe styles and considering how shoe trends are influenced by fashion. From how shoe sizing began to wartime shoes and art deco styles, Shoes is packed with color and interest, and is highly recommended for any with an interest in shoes, from students to casual consumers.

Smart & funny.......2001-01-30
This guy doesn't cut any slack ... he assumes we're somewhat like him -- full of fantasies and a tendency to procrastinate...and he tells it like it (probably) is. I just finished reading it -- and notice that it's a few years old...some of the references sound a bit dated, but the information is still wise and delicious.

Customer Reviews:
Only one sheet of foil.......2001-08-10
i bought this thinking that it would have at lest 4 sheets of foil paper but it only has 1 sheet.
Good practice paper.......2000-06-25
I received my paper and ripped open the pack so I could start folding. I was immediately disappointed by the selection of colors. The colors themselves are good enough, however they are boring. They make your creations uninteresting and drab. I prefer patterned color paper. The paper performs well and I recommend this paper for practicing because if you mess up you didn't lose all that much.
Increased pleasure.......1999-03-01
These 40 sheets were quite useful in folding many difficult origami models. I was slightly discouraged by the limited selection of colors, however. The gold foil and the red paper were especially nice. All colors gave good folds, and were amenable to crumpling when frustration got the better of me. Moreover, the paper gave satisfying tears when I was especially angry. All in all, a good buy.

New York Times Bestseller "Bringing Out the Best in Others" also teaches us how to bring out the best in ourselves. By applying the principles taught in the book to ourselves, we become better people and are more likely to accomplish our goals. We can use these concepts to bring out the best in areas of parenting, production, teamwork, and teaching. Three factors that need to be addressed to accomplish these goals are: we need to have positive expectations, we need to establish accountability, and, we need to provide feedback. Taking these three steps will lead to the goals being accomplished and the final outcome will be successful.
Connellan teaches you how these factors work, he gives you the tools to apply them, and shows you the structure to put them into practice. His writing style is very smooth and easy to follow. A lot of the book is written in a dialogue form so that you feel like you are actually sitting down and talking one-on-one with him. Connellan talks about how our expectations really can affect the performance of others. I think that this idea is so important to understand. As a teacher of students with disabilities, I need to remember not to try to affect my students by limiting them with my beliefs about what they can actually accomplish. Connellan says that if you expect the best in others, you will get it.
Accountability needs to be established so that others take responsibility for their actions. This should be done in a way so that it is positive and does not appear to be placing blame. Connellan wants you to use three types of feedback to bring out the best in
those that you are working with: motivational, informational, and developmental. He has found that using the combination of these three gets the results that are needed.
I highly recommend this book to parents, teachers and employers. Applying the principles listed here will motivate the people that we work with to do their best. If you are not one of these people, but you are involved with being on a team, this would be a great gift for your team leader or your boss. It would make a great boss's day gift!
Sales Management gem.......2004-05-23
I read this book on my last business trip. The principles inside are excellent keys to motivating a sales team. However, I also have used them on my family with outstanding results. Bringing out the best in others is a book that I wish I had read years ago. Over the next few months I expect to be happier. Not just from reading this book, but applying the principles. Why, because it reaps rewards back to anyone who understands and uses the three principles. As a national sales manager, I'm recommending this to anyone who works with a sales team. Although it will be a great addition to anyones library who wants to increase positve change in people and themselves.
An outstanding tool for motivating others to be their best........2004-02-23
I've read too many "self-help" and "help-others" type books to list, and this one honestly rates among one of the most useful.
I work not only as a marketing director for my company, but also serve in leadership positions in numerous professional, civic, and non-profit organizations, and across the board, one of the greatest challenges is in helping others to perform at the level which you know they are capable. This easily read resource imparts some great information, both in theory and in practical application. I've already applied just a few of the concepts with much greater than expected results.
In life, there really are only two motivational factors: love and fear. With fear, you will only go so far. This book focuses on bringing out the best in others, not just for what they can do for you, but for what they will then be able to accomplish for themselves. I strongly recommend it.
A simple story with a powerful application.......2003-11-11
I read this book with more than a little skepticism, even though it had been recommended to me by a trusted friend.
I found it to be way beyond my expectations. Reading this book (and now re-reading it) has transformed the way I intereact with my wife, my children, my co-workers. Highest possible recommendation.
3 important criteria.......2003-10-27
Expectations, accountability and feedback are the three criteria that the author suggests bring out the best in people. Yes, this makes sense, and Optimal Thinking is an essential ingredient to be one's best and bring out the best in others. So read and implement both books!
