I consider Mr. Monek to be the "world authority" on walking sticks and canes. I've managed to make a very good living in the antique cane business with his expert guidance. If you're investing your hard earned money in this "tricky" industry you better have this book.

I'd been looking for an authoritative Kane "Bible" for some years now (I spell Kane with the "K" as the ancient Cameroonians did). This book not only met my Kane needs, it exceeded them. I was doing a article for a local paper on Kane usage in the Depression years. This answered all of my questions and gave me the insight to write my Hufnagle Award For Journalism winning article (named for the late great Earnesto Hufnagle). This is a must buy for any Kane enthusiast!

Roger Ebert's movie reviews are extremely popular, and there are valid reasons for this. Ebert writes entertainingly, his movie assessments are generally spot-on, and he's able to explain, concretely and descriptively, the strengths and flaws of the movies he reviews. That said, there are all sorts of reasons to want Ebert's Movie Yearbook 1999. For one, it provides the same kind of wonderful reference service his Video Companion volumes did, only more so, including every review penned (or more likely, keyboarded) by Ebert in 1997 and 1998, about 500 in all, instead of the 150 reviews selected for each Video Companion. The good, the bad, and the indifferent, they're all there, with blockbusters and little-known independents, art films and documentaries, foreign films and Hollywood extravaganzas. It doesn't include a review for every film made since cinematography began, but, for each movie selected, there's a full-length review instead of the mini-reviews seen in more inclusive anthologies.

In addition, there's an appendix listing every movie review that ever appeared in an Ebert Video Companion (nearly 2,000 titles in all), with the star rating he assigned at the time, so while you don't get to read the reviews, you do get his valuable conclusions. The Yearbook also includes a summary of the best films of 1997, interviews with a number of movie hot shots (from Jim Carrey and Spike Lee to Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino), essays on David Brinkley, Frank Sinatra, Spielberg at 50, and the Titanic, as well as notes from film festivals in Toronto, Telluride, and Cannes. All this plus a comprehensive, cross-referenced index make the Movie Yearbook a superb cinema resource. Ebert fans already know the pleasures of Ebert's prose, but newcomers to Ebert's style will easily understand why he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his movie critiques. --Stephanie Gold

When America wants to know movies, it turns to Roger Ebert, the only film critic to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for criticism.Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2002 presents all of Ebert's reviews from January 1999 to mid-June 2001. 4 out of 5 stars Full of Information, Witty Comments, and Blatant Bias........2007-03-01

I'm not a very big fan of Roger Ebert. The guy is a talented film critic and can ask thought provoking questions when interviewing someone, but he's also arrogant, egotistical, and pretentious. He seems to look down upon films with mass appeal and herald movies that make no sense whatsoever. When Gene Siskel was still alive I tended to appreciate Siskel's reviews more. Things haven't changed much in the past several years because now that Ebert is the lead man with Richard Roeper, I tend to agree and like Roeper's reviews more than Ebert.

That's not to say ROGER EBERT'S MOVIE YEARBOOK 2003 is a bad book, because it's not. It's a companion piece that just about any film lover will enjoy. The book includes over 600 reviews that Ebert wrote between January 2000 through about July 2002. I will say that Ebert is a better writer than he is a public speaker because his written reviews seem formulated and more thought out than the comments Ebert spews forth when he's on the air. But, the MOVIE YEARBOOK isn't just about reviews. The last fifth of the book or so includes film reports from various film festivals, tributes to entertainment greats, interviews with major stars and filmmakers, various essays discussing things such as Halle Berry's Oscar and Funniest Movie Titles, hundreds of Q&As from Ebert's popular syndicated column, a Ebert movie glossary, and an index about of ratings of all films that have appeared in any of Ebert's HOME COMPANION, VIDEO COMPANION, or MOVIE YEARBOOK books (up until early 2003). The stuff at the end of the book and not the reviews themselves is what makes this book worth owning, especially the interviews and essays. These are the pieces I enjoyed reading the most and are the most entertaining and informative selections in the book.

This is a great gift for any movie buff who enjoys reading.

2 out of 5 stars Not too bright, to my surprise.......2004-04-06

I usually enjoy Roger Ebert's movie reviews, but quite a few reviews in this book evidenced what can only be called stupidity. Although he understands the basic necessities of movie entertainment (dramatic tension, forward movement, character development etc.), so does every college drama graduate. The problem is that Ebert enjoys an amazing blindness to complex emotions and irony, and his sense of humor is decidedly slapstick. Basically, he reviews movies on the mid-level-college-freshman-with-a-110-IQ level. If you share these characteristics and preferences, his opinions may appeal to you. If not, the book is just another proof that "there's no accounting for taste."

4 out of 5 stars Better than on TV.......2004-02-14

Every time I see Roger Ebert on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, sticking a microphone in people's faces and sometimes asking questions or making observations that are either gushing or rude, I have a hard time taking him seriously as a critic. Like Rex Reed, he's becoming too much of a showbiz figure himself. But when I read his reviews, my respect for him is restored. He gives equal time to both big-budget box-office hits and tiny independant films, and never comes across as a snob.

Reading the reviews of some critics makes me suspect there's a hidden network through which they make secret contact and agree that film A should be praised and film B should be panned. How else to explain the resoundingly hateful and negative reviews for "15 Minutes," an okay movie with Robert DeNiro and Ed Burns that everyone but Ebert carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey? Ebert did not fall in line, and saw the merits of that film.

But Roger, be a little more civil on the red carpet at the Oscars. I remember in 1994 when you told Holly Hunter that you thought her nomination as best supporting actress for "The Firm" was the worst nomination that year. It's okay to say that in print or on TV, but to say it to her face as she's entering the ceremony was distasteful. It's not her fault she was nominated. Her peers nominated her. Tell THEM, not her, and don't spoil her night with such a negative statement, even if you're just being honest.

        5 out of 5 stars America's best movie critic.......2003-01-08

Even though I live in Ohio, I read all of Roger Ebert's reviews and columns weekly on the Chicago Sun-Times website. He is such a great critic because he's not afraid to disagree with everyone else, and he's not afraid to bring his personal preferences and feelings into each review. A critic's purpose is not to tell you what to see; it's to help you make a more informed decision. Ebert's reviews help me do that more than any other critics.

I have been getting this book from the library each January since 1998 and reading it cover to cover. Not only does it contain hundreds of reviews, it also has the excellent Movie Answer Man column (which I eagerly anticipate in the Sun-Times every other week), and the hilarious Little Movie Glossary (which, in this edition, I am proud to say, features a submission from yours truly).

I agree with Ebert's conclusions on movies something like 60% of the time. That that's the case, and I still read him weekly, proves the merit of his writing.

5 out of 5 stars Ebert's big book of movies never disappoints!.......2002-10-07

The 2003 edition of Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook is the sixth I've purchased and it is sure to exceed every one that came before it. Ebert is a fine writer with the uncanny ability to make every review readable, fun and insightful--whether it's his 5th review or his 5,000th. The extras are what makes these books so enjoyable. From the movie glossary to the index of all his reviews (with star ratings), the book is absolutely jam-packed with information.

My personal favorite section is the interviews he does with various directors, actors and movie business people. Ebert always asks the right questions without the usual creampuff fluffery you come to expect from interviews in Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, etc. He pushes their buttons and gets under their skin--and the results are usually pretty entertaining.

Of course, the real value of Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook is the reviews. The book contains all the reviews of the past several years, along with handy notes on cast and crew, and, of course, the star ratings.

              Book Description

"I have always felt that the Indiana University School of Music was one of the finest schools in the world. This most informative and fascinating book confirms this in a most interesting way. It's a very good read, and I enjoyed it enormously." --Beverly Sills

" . . . I am pleased to recommend this history of one of the world's finest schools of music to all readers interested in the development of music in the United States. The author captures the spirit of an institution which I know first-hand from having conducted their Philharmonic Orchestra on several occasions. All who read this fascinating chronicle will discover how a world- class school of music could develop in the corn fields of southern Indiana." -- Kurt Masur

"George Logan's compulsively readable History--scrupulous, scholarly, elegantly written by one who loves music--tells how wonderful Bloomington (shorthand for the Indiana University School of Music) came into being and flourished: how a music school in a small town grew, under two charismatic leaders, to be a prime force in not just America's but the whole world's musical life." --Andrew Porter

"How did the foremost American school of music, a major world cultural institution, come to be at a state university in a provincial town, amid the cornfields of southern Indiana?" Professor George Logan has not been alone in posing this question, but his reply is unique: this magnificent volume. This institutional biography, enlivened with anecdotes and photographs, reveals modest beginnings indeed, when the orchestra for the 1833 Commencement "was composed of two flutes, one of them cracked." The major shift came in 1919 with the arrival of Winfred Merrill, a dean who was also a violinist, conductor, and composer--as well as a seasoned administrator and teacher. He advertised for students, and soon not even seven pianos could meet the demand for practice instruments. Other visionary improvements and expansions were implemented, and not without a fight. The world's greatest performers were engaged to perform in tremendously popular concert series beginning in the 1920s. Under Deans Sanders, Bain, and Webb, the push to recruit the very best intensified--and succeeded. With scholarly scruples, George Logan has resisted any temptation to give a wine-and roses rendition of history, and tales of thorns and vinegar get ample play as well. What emerges is the epic of a glorious institution, a source of tremendous pride, brought into being and sustained through genius, hard work, and some strokes of incredibly good luck.

5 out of 5 stars An Improbable Story - but True.......2004-10-21

This book describes and analyzes one of the most improbable stories in American education - how did it come to pass that the preeminent music school in the United States, probably in the world, came to be situated in southern Indiana - Bloomington to be exact, at Indiana University. George M. Logan, Head of the English Department at Queen's University, Canada became intrigued by this question and wrote a brilliant book to answer it. As an American living in Europe I am often surprised that musically aware people here not only have heard of Bloomington and Indiana, but react so favorably to it. Its performing faculty (like Janos Starker or Menahem Pressler, or students from Indiana like Joshua Bell) are well known here and heard in concerts or on the radio. Here is one American success story well and interestingly told. Not only is the cast of musical charaters in this history fascinating, but Logan has weaved into the narrative the issues and analyses that confronted the Indiana administration and faculty and the outcomes of their decisions. This a colorful book describing high culture, but it is also a kind of ongoing management manual on successful cultural organization, although Logan is well balanced, recording not only successes but failures as well. I loved reading this book, learned a great deal about cultural management and just plain management, and warmly recommend it.

              5 out of 5 stars OOOOHHHHH SSSWWWWEEEETTTTT!.......2006-11-10

Why can't every gaming book on magic and magical items be this good? All the rest are just stat blocks and creation rules for superfantasy nukes.

              5 out of 5 stars SUPER AWESOME.......2006-08-20

if you love dnd, you will love conan. the game is more violent, and you can still have hard core roleplaying too!!! it has a power point system for spells, and the type of spells are way differant than dnd, better. the game is set up to have no negative effects from game play by having a group of all soldiers or all scholars, the game is awesome like that holmes, buy it see you later G!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book of d20 Hyborian Age magic.......2006-02-07

(and, frankly, PRE-Hyborian Age magic). "The Scrolls of Skelos" is, on its face, a magic rules supplement for Mongoose's "Conan the Role Playing Game" (Conan RPG); additionaly, the Scrolls are an ancient, dreaded grimoire mentioned in Robert E. Howard's Conan stories, and this book describes those ancient scrolls (and others) in their game applications. The book adds several new paths of sorcery (an area about which I was unclear since I don't have the Conan RPG rules!), dazzling new feats, and descriptions of some of the greatest wizards and sorcerers of the Hyborian Age and the magic devices which help to make them so powerful. Ever wonder how to incorporate the Heart of Ahriman into a d20 campaign? "The Scrolls of Skelos" tells you how. Pictish magic, Acherontic magic, Stygian and Vendhyan magic -- it's all in here.

"The Scrolls of Skelos" is intended for use with the Conan RPG, but any good GM should be able to find plenty of inspiration in it for (mostly NPC) magic. Magic in the Hyborian Age is frequently tied to "evil" acts, and acts of mind-shattering cosmic horror, so the average good or neutral PC won't find much of use in "The Scrolls of Skelos," but sometimes it is necessary to "fight fire with fire" as Xaltotun learned in "The Hour of the Dragon" when the aforesaid "Heart of Ahriman" wound up in the hands of a *good* priest, and not a Stygian or Anacreontic necromancer. Conan fans will know whereof I speak.

I give "The Scrolls of Skelos" 5 stars and wish that I could afford the main rule book, too! (The revised one, please, not the one with all the typos!)

              5 out of 5 stars ..........and Finally.......2007-10-03

....at last I really do think I've found the book I've been looking for & if you're reading this & thinking will "this one" help "me" achieve my aims at getting my life on the move to becoming successful - then I say unequivocally - YES!!, this is the one for you.

I've read hundreds of so-called self-help books both modern & old and Brian Tracy's "Goals" sums up ALL of the books I've ever read on the subject. It's like a hundred books all in one covering everything from Motivation, Confidence, Time Management, Self Belief & Worth & oh yes & how to set realistic & achievable Goals!

The beauty with all of these requisites for success is that we all have these qualities to one degree or another & Brian inspires us by telling us that any one of these attributes is "learnable". So no matter where you find yourself today on what "may appear" to be a long road, you can start straight away.

This ought to be the very last book you buy on the subject, but before you read (& more importantly re-read) it, make sure you have a fresh note-book (preferably A4) & scribe to hand. The book is jam packed with all the essential information to kick you off in the right direction the minute you start reading. If you feel you really must do some more research then there is an extensive bibliography at the back.

The book ends with a summery of the 21 successful tips in setting & achieving these goals. Also there is a summery to be found at the end of each chapter for easy future reference.

Written in a modern, clear, interesting, easy readable style & language. It's broken down into easily digestible chunks in such a way that makes you want to read a little bit more. You never stop learning & it's never too late to start [something new].

Don't be put off or judge the book by the BOLD but plain looking & unattractive cover. It's Brian's message that counts & he very cleverly uses famous quotes from the Greats of the past.

              4 out of 5 stars Setting Goals.......2007-09-15

I give this book a 4 because I feel that it is more for the outside worker than it is for an indepentpent worker. I found a lot that seemed to be for the worker who has a "boss" than me being my own boss. However, I read the book through, then reread it looking more into it. I did come across things that I feel will help as long as followed through. The tasks are reasonable in doing. Does it seem hard to make a list of things to accomplish today? Right there you have set goals and followed through. There is a lot more in there, it will help you go from daily goals to weekly, monthly and yearly goals. I would recommend that purchasing his book "Eat That Frog!", they go hand in hand. Both books set on my desk and get looked at daily, to make sure I am following through and creating better habits of myself, to make better habits for my sales. Goals!, will get you going, teaching how to go get your sales instead of waiting and hoping for them to just come to you.

5 out of 5 stars The Steps to Take.......2007-08-06

I loved his frog book but this is just great too. It is an outline on how to really write goals that you need and want to make changes in your personal and career life. Not too fluffy like some self help books. If you are looking to make changes in your life and need help putting together a map to get where you want to.

              Good luck with everything you.

Excellent book - includes some basic information as well as some great techniques for success. This is the best Brian Tracy book that I've read so far. It actually caused a paradigm shift for me in how I view goals and goal setting. As always, Brian presents the information in a way that unlocks the meaning right before your eyes.
