Tina the Ballerina Sticker Paper Doll .......2007-08-31
While the stickers worked well, the book was very little (only a few pages) and the only figure to put the stickers on was on the front cover.
Book Description
For any woman who ever wondered how to wear vintage clothing with panache, at last there is Vintage Style, the book that takes the mystery out of buying, wearing, and caring for vintage clothes. This is not about Victorian whites, poodle skirts, or boogie-woogie-bugle-boy outfits with peplums, seamed stockings, and snoods. It's about vintage clothes as a mainstream choice, and this fully illustrated book shows just how easily the fashions of yesteryear can be incorporated into a modern wardrobe.
Vintage Style tells you--and shows you--exactly how to get into vintage. It features more than one hundred specially commissioned photographs of thirty-six women (and one man) from all walks of life modeling classic vintage pieces as part of three different outfits--casual, workday, and evening. It is on these pages that one can truly see the extraordinary versatility of vintage clothing and also appreciate how to achieve that "edge" that only one-of-a-kind fashion can create. The "classics" section, shopping tips, and care suggestions that are included are full of helpful information for creating and maintaining a uniquely personal look.
All in all, Vintage Style is nothing short of a money-saving source guide and an inspirational blueprint for understanding how to wear vintage clothes with style.

Not what you'd expect.......2007-09-28
I was very disappointed in this book; I had hoped to find a nicely laid out book that presented lovely or interesting vintage pieces that regular people have worked into their wardrobes. I thought I'd see particularly fine examples of some classics and maybe some more unusual pieces. This is not the book for that. Some of the pieces are not even vintage (!!) but are rather meant to represent a 'classic' type of clothing. For example, one woman is shown wearing a no-sleeve turtleneck sweater which, we're told, is from the 90's but "could have come from the 50's." Whaaaa? And while the authors are obviously shooting for sending the message that vintage pieces can be timeless and that well-crafted clothing works in any time, I think that message is already well-known to vintage clothing lovers who would presumably be interested in this book. I wanted to see people doing interesting things with 50's swing coats or perhaps showing how they wear classic 30's or 40's style without it looking costume-y. If you're looking for this, don't buy this book!
Another thing I didn't like about the style is that the authors often sound snobbish, dropping names right and left without giving any background information on why these are famous names in the first place. Personally, I don't give a flip whether something is made by Pucci. If it looks good and is well-made, the label only adds to the expense.
Misses the Mark.......2004-04-05
As an introduction, I am not a "fashion expert", or knowledgeable about vintage fashion to any depth. That said, I believe I have a good sense of style, and wanted to learn more. Almost every page of this book left me wishing for more; as I turned the pages I went from excitement [at seeing something new] to boredom [at another impracticable idea] to interested [there are many historical gems in this book] to unbelieving [at another picture/idea that looked completely wrong to me] to contented [sometimes short sections of the book just came together because the author has a very nice writing style].
Most of the book is a list of 37 clothing styles (36 for women, one for men, with examples of business, casual and evening variations for each) and most of these did not live up to their potential. Each style usually takes 5 pages to explain, with lots of pictures. For a non-expert like me, there was not enough explanation on what made each style different and appealing. Most of the pictures, rather than explaining and amplifying the style, were "fashion shoots" showing the owners in their clothes, posing in various stylish ways - the emphasis was on the person, not the garment. I would have appreciated more controlled pictures of the clothing, and close-ups showing its advantages. Many times the author says It's about "The linings, the detailing, the tailoring. It's about workmanship. It's about the way it fits and the way it moves." However, there is not one picture or one paragraph explaining any of these things for any of the 37 clothing styles!
For some odd reason, the author is stuck on the decades also. As other reviewers noted, most of the book is 1950's and later. Many times you will read: "In what decade was it made? What difference does it make?...", yet attached to each picture is a decade. More frustrating, there is very little explanation why one picture is "50's" and the one next to it is "70's". Some of her ideas just seem crazy or outlandish, like wearing shorts & pajamas in a conservative work environment. (You won't stand out as long as you wear your Chinese pajamas under a sport coat and match the colors in the Pucci shorts with your blouse!)
I appreciated that real people are wearing these clothes, and not the latest supermodel. For me, the best part of the book was the end with little vignettes on classic styles, vintage finds, & shopping. Again, most of the shopping section should be extra for anyone who reads the paper, shops at the mall, and has an idea of what garage sales and flea markets are all about (but for beginners there are a few additional bits of information in there).
After reading 37 examples of how everything can be acceptable anywhere, as long as you are stylish, you should feel encouraged to go out, buy something different and try it on. To critique this book, there should be much better books out there, for both beginners and vintage experts; however, this is one of my first books so I just don't know which ones they are.
Best book on the topic i've seen.......2003-04-09
tiffany dubin really knows her stuff and doesn't get too lofty for the average person who just wants to see what all this hype about vintage is about. she shows fun ways to mix and match your existing wardrobe with cool finds. this book is a perfect guidebook, fun to look at and has some amazing rescources as well as a fun group of what must be friends showing the clothing off. A+
Blurry Photos and Fuzzy Guidance.......2002-05-10
This was an ambitious project, by all means: over two hundred four-color pages and a jacket blurb that proclaims the book "nothing short of a money-saving source guide and an inspirational blueprint for understanding how to wear vintage clothing with style". Alas, Vintage Style fails on both counts. While some of the photographs display lovely vintage pieces--a terrific off-white Dior ensemble from the 50's, for example--the majority of these vintage-ensembles-as-mainstream-choices would draw unwanted stares at best, and embarrassing comments, at worst.
As for being a source guide, money-saving or otherwise, the book merely lists (on the final few pages) a handful of vintage dealers in each of the general regional areas of the United States, with the majority being in the New York and New England areas (surprise, surprise). The disclaimer states "A complete list would be impossible to compile". Apparently so: if you're a resident of The South, we're informed, there are only two vintage sellers of which the authors are aware: one in Miami and one in Atlanta. Well, that's news to us Southern girls! Furthermore, no price points are mentioned (these would help steer the vintage shopper to boutiques whose merchandise she could afford) and no information on the stores' areas of specialization (i.e. designers and eras represented) is given either.
Although there are plenty of color photographs, the majority are strangely styled and badly out-of-focus. A puzzling eight-part treatise on hacking up a (seemingly) perfectly good black lace dress with a pair of scissors concludes with the wearer looking less Comme des Garcons than extremely silly. And there is a disappointing shortage of accessory shots: don't those New Yorkers like vintage jewelry and handbbags as much as the rest of the nation?
Yes, you'll see some designer outfits shown on non-models in Vintage Style. But for about $37 less, you can flip through the society pages of W magazine and have a similar experience.
very disappointing.......2002-01-04
This book is really aimed at vintage fashion neophytes. For any one with more than a passing knowledge of vintage fashion save your money. As an aesthitic experience the book is great, lots of pretty pictures. However, there is nothing really of interest in the book. As a test if you know who courreges is do not buy this book, there is nothing here you don't already know.

Book Description
Retail real estate properties and their marketplaces are in a constant state of change. The emergence of such new and growing value formats as warehouse clubs, factory outlet malls, and other powerful discount formats provide traditional shopping centers and malls with increasingly competitive challenges. These value and discount retail formats generate higher sales per square foot and have lower construction costs than many traditional retail properties. Combined with the slow growth in retail sales and the increasing alternatives to in-store retailing, a question mark hangs over the future of retail marketplaces and the retail formats that will be the leaders of the future.
Megatrends in Retail Real Estate allows the reader to analyze and forecast changes in the retail marketplace. The book presents a simple model to analyze and predict mall and shopping center investment returns. It then examines the financing of retail properties and securitization of their mortgages, as well as the operations of retail properties. Finally, the book analyzes new retail marketplaces and the international retail arena.

A major help.......2007-05-19
Many screenwriters are constantly looking for Mr. or Ms. Right - the writing partner who will make their professional life heaven on earth. Sharing the money and fame are a small price to pay for the friendship, support and extra creativity which a good partnership brings. But finding the right writing partner is almost as difficult as finding the right spouse. While Script Partners doesn't provide any magic formulas to help you find your dream collaborator, it examines the entire process in great detail.
Claudia Johnson and Matt Stevens are themselves a screenwriting duo and have interviewed some twenty teams of co-writers for this book. They've included all the biggies (Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, Harold Ramis and Peter Tolan, Woody Allen's collaborator Marshall Brickman) and quite a few lesser-known writing teams. Chapters include finding the right partner, solving time and place issues, and all aspects of the actual writing (although the theoretical information mentioned here doesn't differ from the usual advice given to solo writers). Johnson and Stevens also use a lot of examples from their own experience, which proves you cannot always depend on first impressions - as they started out hating each other.
The most valuable chapters in this book are the ones dealing with the personal difficulties inherent in the creative process, and the business side of things. Here, we get some valuable advice on how to handle the many problems which will crop up in almost every writing partnership. For anyone considering a partnership, this book will be a great help.
A Great Addition to Any Writer's Library.......2005-08-06
In the interest of full disclosure, I should say first that Matt Stevens and I are long-time friends. That noted, I can honestly say that "Screen Partners: What Makes Film and TV Writing Teams Work" is one of the most useful and entertaining books on writing that I've ever read, and I've read quite a few. By focusing on how screenwriting teams operate, Johnson and Stevens provide not only a view into the inner workings of the collaborative artistic relationship, but also an original, engaging and illuminating look at the craft of screenwriting. Any working or would-be screenwriting team can certainly benefit by reading (and re-reading) this text, while even the most dedicated "go it alone" soloist may be inspired to keep his/her eyes open for the right writing partner after reading this book.
Writing in a personable and humorous style, Johnson and Stevens generously share what they've learned about collaboration during the course of their own artistic partnership, and they extensively quote other working writers and writing teams that they interviewed for the book. Occasionally, scenes or snippets from finished scripts are included to further illuminate certain points.
The book follows a clear, straightforward structure as Johnson and Stevens explore collaborative screenwriting from every angle. First, they focus the hows and whys, with three chapters that identify the various mental and creative benefits of collaboration, explain how writers go about finding appropriate partners, and explore how teams decide when, where and how to get the actual writing done. The middle section of the book focuses on the work itself, with four chapters dedicated to choice of project, character development, story development and structure, and drafting of the script. The last two chapters address a range of creative and business issues that every writing team should seriously consider up-front, from how to handle disagreements to how to split the money to how to part if the collaboration ends. Additional material includes useful checklists of "Screen Partner Points" that follow each chapter as well as the to-be-expected Introduction, Afterword, Filmography, etc.
While a fast reader can make pretty quick work of this book, it's chock-full of thoughtful, useful material that screenwriters and screenwriting teams can return to again and again for support, ideas and inspiration.
A True Pleasure!.......2004-11-13
Let's be honest here. Although I may toy with the idea of writing a great screenplay, the truth is that I probably never will. That being said, I must say that this book was an absolute delight to read! The 'insider' stories were funny and fascinating. I found myself reveling in the anecdotes and in the authors' self-deprecating humor. I thought I'd find the book mildly interesting, since I'm not really and truly in the industry. However, I was pleased to discover that the material was thoroughly engaging and had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. In the event that I ever decide to get serious about writing, this book will be an invaluable source of information. Thank you Matt and Claudia...for giving us an definitive alternative to sitting in front of a computer screen just waiting for wisdom to spring forth! I am quite sure I will never again underestimate the value of a good kick in the pants (nor the unwavering support) from a 'script partner'!
Jumpstart Your Creativity.......2003-09-03
This book exceeded my expectations and helped me discover better writing through partnership. I'd previously attempted screenwriting with a partner (with limited success), but had no model to base the partnership on. As a result of the interviews and examples the book provides, I was more confident that I could find a collaborator whose style more appropriately complimented my own. Needless to say, I found a screenwriting partner and through trial and error (with the book as a guide) we explored different styles of working, finally settling into a routine that has not only helped our writing improve, but has increased our productivity by leaps and bounds.
I highly recommend that you pick up this book if you find your writing hits a dead end ? even if you don?t, it's the only book of its kind, a great read, and definitely worth a look.
"Work marriage".......2003-07-09
SCRIPT PARTNERS can easily be expanded to a larger audience. In gathering information from other outstanding writing teams and their own experiences in working together, Claudia & Matt have captured the essence of the creative/collaborative relationship. Within the first few pages of the book, I was transported to an earlier experience in my career with another type of "work marriage"- co-therapy. The parallel between writing teams and co-therapy is quickly apparent. Both assist in the development of their characters/clients; both find themselves caught up in their own issues; both misread their character/client and discover that they are going down the wrong path; both experience the sadness and joy of discovery and human emotion. And (SCRIPT PARTNERS p.1) "we both know on some level that we could do this by ourselves...we both could, but we're better together and prefer it that way."
As a therapist, if you've never experienced the joys of co-therapy or found solutions for the struggles, read this book. Claudia & Matt have given us a map that guides our partnerships through the ups and downs of a "work marriage". Don't miss it, it's an insightful, humorous, and refreshing book.

Book Description
This book is exceptional amongst those that have appeared so far in this well-established series, in that it is largely written by those who worked with the composer and assisted him during the period in which the opera was composed and first put on the stage. It will thus remain a source of first-hand information on Britten's final operatic achievement. Donald Mitchell was Britten's publisher at the time of Death in Venice and his Introduction includes many personal observations on the genesis of the work. The latter part of the book contains essays by T. J. Reed and Patrick Carnegy on the libretto's source in Thomas Mann's novella and Philip Reed compares briefly Visconti's cinematic interpretation of the novella. The volume is richly illustrated with music examples, sketches and extracts from the autograph score, and pictures from the first production. It will make an essential reference work and indispensable companion for opera-goers, students and scholars alike.

Very good, vary basic.......2005-09-23
This is a great book to gain knowledge specifically about One Pocket. Although it doesn't make you an expert it will certainly move your game past the level of a casual player.
I would suggest supplementing the book with "Play your best Straight Pool" by Philip Capelle because it covers in detail the 'how to's of finesse pool.
There are better choices than this book to improve your 1P .......2005-05-17
Save your time and money and instead read Winning One Pocket by Eddie Robin and the companion book Shots Moves and Strategies (also by Robin). Both books are out of print and expensive, but in this case you get exactly what you pay for. My biggest problem with Upscale One Pocket is that it does not present enough examples of responding to the break or provide enough moves and strategies to beat even B players. The book has few decent illustrations, which really makes it difficult to learn any shots, and in many other ways it just doesnt get it done. Concepts such as playing the score, the value of taking intentional scratches, skill level in choice of shot etc are all given minimal treatment. After reading this book my one- pocket game did not improve and it did not inspire me to get on a table and practice any particular shots. The two previously mentioned Eddie Robin's books improved my game two balls and I am still learning from them.
LEARN THE EASY WAY.......2003-08-03
Title -- Learn the easy way
In order to win at One-Pocket you need both physical skill and knowledge. The knowledge part is much more important in One-Pocket than in any other pool game. I know of no better (and cheaper) place to get this knowledge than from Koehler's book UPSCALE ONE-POCKET. Learning One-Pocket "on-the-job" can be very expensive. Take the easy way, buy the book.
Small but powerfull.......2003-07-08
There is no other book available that goes into such detail about the beak shot in One Pocket. And, there is no other book in the world that thoroughly examines multiple rail bank shots as this book does. On top of that, I enjoyed the strategy examples, it is unbelievable the number of moves a player can make with any given set of circumstances. Excellent value for the money.
On The Money.......2003-07-05
It generally takes years for a pool player to make the transition from Nine Ball to ONE-POCKET. With the help of this book I was able to make the transition in a matter weeks. The critical things in One Pocket are the break shot and multiple rail banks. On these subjects Koehler does an excellent job. His chapter on Strategy is also extremely good. For anyone that has an interest in One Pocket, I highly recommend this book.

Where does money come from? Where does it go? Who makes it? The money magicians' secrets are unveiled. We get a close look at their mirrors and smoke machines, their pulleys, cogs, and wheels that create the grand illusion called money. A dry and boring subject? Just wait!
You'll be hooked in five minutes. Reads like a detective story - which it really is. But it's all true. This book is about the most blatant scam of all history. It's all here: the cause of wars, boom-bust cycles, inflation, depression, prosperity.
Creature from Jekyll Island is a "must read." Your world view will definitely change. You'll never trust a politician again - or a banker.

Fascinating, albeit slanted.......2007-10-05
Griffin's work here in exposing the banking cartel is truly a fascinating read, but I am left wondering about the truths of many of his assertions. The author writes with a clearly anti-socialist, pro-libertarian bias, and in at least a few examples completely distorts truths to make his point.
In one example, he maintains that Abraham Lincoln was a white supremacist, quoting Lincoln from a campaign speech where he states he has never been, and never will be in favor of equality of the white and black races. Griffin fails to point out, however, that this speech was made in a southern state, and only weeks prior Lincoln says the opposite in a speech in the North. See Zinn's 'A Peoples History' for exact details.
The clearest text on economics, particularly, banking ever written .......2007-08-29
A friend of mine--who is one of those rare fellows who actually worries about the national debt (which according to this link is ~$9 trillion and counting... fast)--laid Creature on me last time we broke bread together. In this tome, author Edward Griffin delivers a devastating expose on the background, execution, and remedies to the Federal Reserve Banking system (FRBS).
The system, which amounts to a national bank under control of (surprise) the money interests who dominate the government of the United States, was rather sneakily enacted into law by Congress just before Christmas recess in 1913. Creature shows how this surreptitious meeting on Jekyll Island, a private resort off the coast of Georgia owned by J.P. Morgan and associates, led to the FRBS and its seemingly unlimited license to steal continuously from the productive class.
The men came to the island in November of 1910 courtesy of Aldrich's splendiferous private railway car; every effort was made to conceal their identities and the nature of their business. News did not leak until 1916 when a young financial reporter for Leslie's Weekly, B.C. Forbes (who later founded Forbes Magazine) wrote a story about the meeting... approvingly.
Griffin lays out the objectives of these less-than-magnificent seven straightforwardly, then, what follows is history, as they say. And "history" should be the middle name of Griffin's fascinating book, which is largely a compendium of how the American and world economies developed from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Griffin makes everything so crystal clear, even I can comprehend it. (I can honestly assert that finally, after all the books I've read over the years on money and banking, I truly understand how the federales create money out of thin air.)

The Bankers Secrets Revealed.......2007-08-12
I first read this book back in 1998. I just got done re-reading it because I work in the financial industry and I wanted to re-arm myself with some good information to advise my clients about. As I write this Sunday 8/12/07, we have seen this Fed spring into action the last week just as Mr. Griffin explained they would when the s**t is hitting the fan. They created $38 billion out of thin air to bail out the hedge funds and institutions with corrosive sub prime mortgage bonds on their books. We are starting to see the alchemy of modern finance come apart at the seams.
I also loved this book because it reads like history book. This country is in bad shape because of central bank planning. It's time to get back to sound money like the founders stipulated in the Constitution. Vote for Ron Paul for President.
Overwrought.......2007-06-30
This author obviously has an agenda. He attaches way too much intelligence to 'conspirators', as if they were the devil incarnate. While a lot of the information and the quotes were interesting, the overwrought tone of the book diminishes its value in my eyes. He borders on sounding like he's raving.
The part about future bank runs was hilarious. How many people keep significant amounts of savings in a bank any longer? How many Americans actually have any savings? A bank run in the 21st century? Ridiculous!
Disaster for bankers.......2007-06-06
If the information contained in this book gets into the hands of too many people, this could destroy the money monopoly machine owned by the Rothchild family, the Queen of England et al.
It could all come tumbling down for these fine people - what would they do?

The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-10-02
This book is not main stream. Its critics would probably call it the radical theories of a "gold bug". A more "establishment" answer to the criticisms brought up in this book can be found in Galbraith's - Money, From Whence It Came and Where It Went.
This book is structured very well. It is easy to read and very persuasive but if you are like me, after you finish this book you will have more questions than you have answers.
The book makes some good points on the other hand it promotes many fantasies.
Mr. Griffin could be right on many things but his answers for the most part would not make things better - but worse in my opinion.
The solution to the MONEY problem are more complicated than the answers that are supplied here. This book is a good book to buy and to read but one must read it very critically - very critically.
Fearfully Factual - Wholly Horrific.......2007-04-22
If you, like me, believe that the truth doesn't always makes sense, but the WHOLE TRUTH usually does, then you will appreciate and value this well researched, carefully written work by G.E. Griffin. Even so, this is just the tip of a much bigger iceberg, but for anyone who wants to know why the working class has to work so hard, just to go backwards, you will find out a very definitive answer in this book. This book is a must have for any TRUTH SEEKER fighting for facts in an age of profiteering deceipt. If you are new to economics, please read "Whatever Happened To Penny Candy" by Richard J. Maybury and Jane A. Williams first and you will know more than than most politicians. Griffins other book, "A World Without Cancer" is equally as researched, informative, and important.
Even a beginner can understand.......2007-04-04
When I first read this book - I had only just begun looking at the banking system and how it worked. My knowledge extended a bit past CNBC - but not much. I found it understandable and enjoyable. Since my original read (about 3 years ago) I have read it again and bought a second copy to loan out - I don't want to lose my original. I'm not sure Joe Average could simply pick it up and be enthralled, but if you have an interest in the banking system - this is a great book - even if you have little background in the subject.
The Matrix .......2007-03-17
AFTER READING THIS BOOK YOU WILL HEAR DISCUSSIONS ON TALK SHOWS, ARTICLES IN THE PAPERS AND YOU'LL LISTEN TO THE RHETORIC BANTERED BACK AND FORTH AMONG PEOPLES TRYING TO GRASP "WHY THINGS ARE HAPPENING THE WAY THEY ARE". WHY DO BANKS GET INVOLVED IN APPROVING HOME LOANS ON OVER VALUED PROPERTY...KNOWING FORECLOSURES WILL SOON SKYROCKET? WHY DOES THE US SELL WEAPON TECHONOLOGY TO COUNTRIES THAT, WE CITIZENS ARE TOLD, ARE PROBLEM COUNTRIES? WHY HAS THE CIA TRAINED FOREIGN BORN INDIVIDUALS, SUCH AS, BIN LADEN AND OTHERS KNOWING FULL WELL WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT? THE MEDIA REPORTS EVENTS AND WE ASSUME THAT IT IS TRUE...THAT IT REPRESENTS REALITY. BUT, THIS BOOK WILL TELL YOU WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. THEN YOU WILL REALIZE HOW FOOLISH WE ARE TO LIVE IN THIS "WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE" THAT THE MEDIA HAS CREATED FOR US.
Should be required reading.......2007-03-06
You can read the other reviews for synopsis and overviews. This is a must read and should be required reading for all Americans. It is a well researched and footnoted exposition on the Federal Reserve and far more. Griffin goes into fascinating asides regarding the origins of money and banking and the ways that bankers have instigated wars while supporting both sides. This book should be of great interest to those who enjoy either history, finance, foreign affairs, mystery or politics and answers many questions as to why the "world" is as it is today. The first 50 pages are a little slow and then it reads like a detective novel. It could even be argued that it's one's duty to read this book.
