    Book Description

Embellishment with glittering substances is a worldwide and ancient practice. Traces of textiles and other artifacts decorated with gold were depicted in Assyrian bas-reliefs, frozen in the tombs of Scythian nomads, unearthed with the treasures of the pharaohs, and preserved in the burials of Andean cultures' high priests and nobles. These marvelous historical creations and their equally splendid modern counterparts have a visual appeal that makes them a fertile source of inspiration in contemporary fashion and decoration.

Victoria Z. Rivers has spent more than a decade in her quest for the most spectacular examples of these textiles. Drawing on an extraordinary array of specialist anthropological research from every continent, she examines the lustrous qualities of silk and the special dyeing techniques and other treatments that give fabric surfaces shimmering qualities; explores the use of gold, silver, metals, sequins, beads, and mirrors for decoration; and shows how other gifts of nature—shells, seeds, feathers, beetle wings—are cleverly manipulated to simulate more precious materials.

This sumptuously illustrated, superbly designed, and highly original odyssey through the world's cultures is essential reading for anyone concerned with the history of textiles and contemporary fashion, as well as all those interested in symbol and ceremonial practice in traditional societies. 287 color illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars meaningful materials and talismanic adornments.......2006-08-05

What a fabulous fascinating book. There are not many books on this subject. I found this one after purchasing a book called "Amulets" by Sheila Paine which is also highly recommended. "Shining Cloth" is full of gorgeous pictures and interesting anthropological, historical, and cultural information. Tribal and native textiles from all over the world are represented, including Africa, Japan, India, South America. I can't imagine why anyone object to a book devoted to these wonderful cultures and their use of textiles so vehemently they would write four negative reviews (all obviously from the same person) denouncing the book. Is that some kind of elitist snobbery and outrage suggesting that only westernized "civilized" collections of textiles should be the subject of a book. How bizarre and short sighted. There are many people like me who appreciate this material and don't see enough of it. There are hundreds of books on the more conventional and well known textiles and their histories. Certainly there is room for a few alternative views. The richness and diversity of these cultures should not be lost. Thank you Victoria Rivers for putting this together.

The cover and title are also not misleading in any way as claimed in another review. Anyone who is familiar with textiles should recognize the mirror work and beadwork patterns of the nomadic people of northern India. How could a book about tribal textiles be misleading when it puts tribal textile patterns on the cover? The book claims to be about "dress and adornment that glitter" and that is exactly what it is about. The book investigates cultures that are invested in glittering and shining materials and how they are used in textiles. My only complaint about the book is that the binding is not well done and came apart from the rest of the book too easily. However, the content and format of the book deserves five stars so I give it five stars and a warning about the binding.

    5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any textile junkie's library........2002-11-14

For those of you, like me, who cannot afford to own everything you want... or who do not want to maintain the incredible textile collection you will find pictured here. This book is the wonderful alternative. Close-up details, gorgeous color, perfect eye candy.

5 out of 5 stars The Shinig Cloth: Dress and Adornment That Glitters.......2002-05-21

A brilliant read! Traveling the world has afforded me an upclose look at textiles and adornment such as you will see and read about in this highly profesional book. As a textile artist, and merchant of marvels, this book has been invaluable to my collection. This book is great for gift giving too!

    1 out of 5 stars False Pretense.......2002-03-21

I find this material to be more of a soapbox for the author to launch into tirades and attacks against Christianity and Christians using misinformation, skewed factoids and blatant lies and deceptions concerning Christianity and Christians, while promoting her own biased religious support for shamanism, Hinduism and various other religions under the false pretense of writing a book on "cloth".

5 out of 5 stars Still Amazed at Shining Cloth.......2002-01-16

A hobbyist's interest in textiles, sewing and garb drew me into the mysterious worlds presented in this fascinating and unique book. I am not a textiles professional, but I am able to appreciate it in many forms, whether tribal or ethnic, European, or the latest molecular likeness from DuPont. Dismissed by some as a "coffee table" book, The Shining Cloth actually is on my coffee table, where it has lain since its publication. Friends leaf through its wondrous pages, the unknown surfacing in unfathomable meaning from weave, creative decorations, the illustrious imagination that calls on a feather, a gold thread, some beads, and yes, a reflective dot, as a kind of speechless communication. I learned from The Shining Cloth of the metals used for reflection before the advent of the common mirror. Indigo and various dye from nature created signature fabric and design. Such explanations have parallels in my specialty -- food -- that is, people everywhere survive in ingenious ways. Tribal peoples continue even today an unshakeable superstitious dread of what their ancestors called the "evil eye." That their strategy for security could be the armour formed by the industrious and loving construction of a sparkling piece of clothing might have softened a terrifying life or added beauty to a bleak one. The entire subject begs inquiry and demands respect. Ms. Rivers' research certainly got my attention.

    4 out of 5 stars Avengers Begins.......2006-07-05

This is a great book if you already know Avengers history. It fills in the gaps and fleshes out the characters. You get a close up look at the personality conflicts and politics that went on as this grand team went through its early growing pains.

This should not be the first Avengers book you read but if you become an Avengers fan and get familiar with their early history, you will probably enjoy this book enormously. It is a bit of a recon, so if you are a purist you may want to avoid it but you will be missing a treat.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Characterizations.......2006-03-20

That basically sums up this book: brilliant characterizations. The book goes through the first year or so of the original Avengers run, but instead of rewriting history with a new story or jsut retelling the same thing, this book goes behind the scenes. As other reviewers said, this book skips around, but I do not find this to be a problem. The book does not detail the big fights that happened. It only includes them if they help flesh out teh characters. Joe Casey makes each of the original Avengers feel like real people with real problems. This is perhaps the best characterizations of the team I have ever seen. I did not read the original run. I was not extremely familiar with the original plots. I knew enough history that I had some idea what the general progression of things would be (i. e. members leaving the team and such). This being said I had no problem with the jumps. I may not have known why the lava people invaded but I didnt care. I wa smroe concerned with how Iron Man was going to handle Thor temporarily takign charge. I actually cared about these characters. I knew they woudl win the fights. I didn't really care about the fights, but it definitely made me love the characters. It also has a g reat Captain America story too. For a barometer on my tastes, I like Watchmen, Sandman, Invincible, Strangers in Paradise, and early Savage Dragon among others. So I am into the Superhero action and the character driven stuff. This book is a melding of that.

2 out of 5 stars Avengers Cliffs Notes.......2005-08-31

I'm a sucker for these "Year One" type books. All I knew about this book was that it was a re-telling of the Avengers' early days. I love the Avengers, so I thought, "How can I go wrong?" I wish I had read some reviews before I ordered this!

    First, what's good:
The artwork by Scott Kolins is decent. He has a clean style that suits the story and characters well. It's not too cartoon-y and it's not bogged down with over-the-top detail. It's fun to see the different versions of the heroes costumes, especially Iron Man's. He goes from his old clunky getup to sleeker designs. The Wasp's costume goes through some funky changes too.

    What's bad:
This book tries to jam too much into what was an eight comic run. There were times when I thought I had skipped a page, or maybe one was missing. It felt like a badly edited movie. The writer, Joe Casey, often drops the reader into the middle of some big crisis with villains like Kang or the Masters of Evil, with virtually no explanation. It's a lot of snapshots of Avengers' history that don't fit together as a single story. You'll be asking yourself questions like, "Why are they in outer space all of a sudden?" or "Who the hell is Rick Jones?"

The biggest flaw of the book is that it "revisits" the time when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby told these stories, but the book shows cell phones, cable TV, and computers. If Joe Casey is re-telling old stories, why does he set them in the present? This makes no sense at all. At least he could have left the time period ambiguous, but he hits you over the head with the whole "present-day" concept.

There is an attempt to tie the chapters together with Captain America's quest to kill Baron Zemo to avenge the death of his sidekick Bucky. This almost holds things together, but not quite. There are too many side stories squeezed in here. Maybe an editor told Casey "OK, you've got eight issues to cover these 50 events, good luck."

Skip this book and check out "The New Avengers" and "The Ultimates." Learn from this comic fan's mistake!

3 out of 5 stars This comic reprinthas been censored for your protection. . ........2004-12-28

I've been out of the comic-scene for the last several months, so I'm not up to date on current trade paperback collections of previously released material. When I first saw this listing on Amazon.com, I thought "Neat, someone is releasing a MARVEL AGE DIGEST of mid-late seventies AVENGERS material. That's good stuff for the kiddies."

Information on the specific contents was sparse and no cover image was available, but upon seeing Gerry Conway and Jim Shooter's names listed as writers, along with Perez for the art, I thought that I was looking at something along the run of AVENGERS (volume 1) #150-156, which again would be a good run to release in trade paperback geared toward a younger audience.

And so, sight unseen, I placed an order. The merchant selling the item was prompt and efficient, and I received my item within five days of placing the order. I have no complaints with the merchant selling the item. My only complaint, if I have one, is with Marvel trade paperback division and the editor of the collection.

To wit: this trade paperback is an edited re-release of 1999's AVENGERS VISIONARIES: GEORGE PEREZ volume. The aforementioned AVENGERS VISIONARIES volume consisted of reprints of AVENGERS ANNUAL #6, AVENGERS #161-162, AVENGERS ANNUAL #8, AVENGERS #194-196 and a short back-up story featuring Jarvis the Butler from AVENGERS #201.

The MARVEL AGE edited reprint collection eliminates AVENGERS #194-196, a well-regarded story introducing the villainous Taskmaster and guest-starring the Scott Lang version of Ant-Man.

Amusingly, in the cast of characters given in the introductory pages of this collection, the Scott Lang Ant-Man is listed as one of the cast of characters, but the only stories he appeared in during the period covered by this collection, the aforementioned issues #194-196, have been removed from this volume.

Additionally, the credits page at the beginning of this volume lists Joseph Rubinstein, Jack Abel and Dan Green as inker, and again, the issues that they had worked on - the aforementioned issues #194-196 - have been omitted from this volume. Consequently, the book contains an inaccurate credits page.

While these may be picayune objections to the product, the element the causes me the most amused consternation is that the artwork for the reprints of issues #161, 162, and Annual 8 has been bowdlerized. The artwork - which had been previously approved by the Comics Code Authority when it was first published - has been prudishly altered from that printed in 1977 and 1978 (and in the 1999 AVENGERS VISIONARIES volume) apparently to "protect the children" from Janet Van Dyne Pym's unfortunate wardrobe choices.

For example, in issue #161, Jan wore a purple backless number with a plunging neckline, a bare midriff and lots of little cutouts running down the outside of the legs. For this collection, the art has been altered and recolored to eliminate Jan's cleavage and cover up her midriff. [They even went so far as to erase her bellybutton.]

In issue #162, back in 1977, a naked Jan was bound on a platform with metal restraints strategically covering the naughty bits in a situation reminiscent of what befell the Dahlia Lavi character in the late sixties Bond spoof CASINO ROYALE. This remained untouched in the 1999 reprint, but in 2004, the artwork has been altered to put Jan in a light grey bodystocking. This time, the art-retoucher neglected to eliminate her navel, and this suit sweats in little beads of perspiration just like Jan's bare skin did in 1977.

In Avengers Annual #8 (ca. 1978), Jan wore a blue-green minidress with a plunging neckline. Again the artwork has been altered to remove Jan's cleavage, by having Jan wear an undershirt in a color identical to the minidress. Not content with saving the reader from Jan's cleavage, the powers-that-be in charge of this collection have decided that they must also save us from the prospect of Jan's bare legs. Oh dear, oh dear, she now has leggings in an identical blue-green color to the minidress and new undershirt.

I read these stories when they first came out at the tender age of ten and eleven. My own children have read these stories in their original form at ages younger than I was upon their first release. It has been by experience that mores liberalize with the passage of time, so I find this rampant censoring of material that twenty-six and twenty-seven years ago WAS considered appropriate to all-ages (as the current MARVEL AGE line is touted as being) most curious.

As a reader and longtime fan, I expected Marvel to be responsible with regard to their reprint product, but not cowardly. The alteration of the material reprinted in this collection smacks more of moral cowardice than artistic responsibility.

So, my review is mixed. The stories I would give a four-star rating, but the exection of this edition I would give a mere two star rating, thus averaging out to the three stars I have given above.

Buy if if you are interested in it or think you or someone you know would enjoy it, but be aware that the material has been noticably altered from how it was originally intended.

5 out of 5 stars Genuinely made me laugh out loud many times........2007-04-10

I have seen the author perform and she's awesome. But writing and performing are very different disciplines. I have to say I was blown away by how funny she is on the page. Amazing. The jokes come rapid fire. I think the "relationship" theme is great but people should be aware it's not serious selp-helpy, it's just really really funny, for men and for women. It's the perfect gift for any friend who has gone through dating madness... and who hasn't?

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and helpful.......2006-03-03

Not only did I laugh out loud at every page - but I actually gained insight into my relationship! This book is extremely well written, irreverent, and speaks to smart funny women. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars You'll laugh, you'll cry, it will become a part of you.......2006-02-22

Even an old married lady like me had a few things to learn from this hilarious take on heterosexual romance. If you've seen Allison's standup or "one woman, two backup dancers" shows, you'll recognize the wacky, knowing tone. (And if you haven't, shame on you.)

Very well written book on the Mr. Moto movies. I would recommend this book to any fan of the series.

              4 out of 5 stars Thumb's up, Mr. Moto!.......2005-06-21

The Mr. Moto fan lives in a world that gives more focus to both the Rathbone/Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies and the Charlie Chan movie series. In fact I would bet most Motophiles became fans of the series by watching their local TV station's "Mystery Movie" in the 60s or 70s, which often alternated the three film lines.

Howard Berlin's book finally provides an in-depth, single resource for looking up "who's that?" or clarifying plots. He salutes the original literature, as well as star Peter Lorre, but he keeps firmly focused on the films. He even gives the odd-ball 1960s "Return of Mr. Moto its due as a member of the family (if a time or two removed).

While a few more photos might have been nice - let's face it - if you are a fan of the series, you've probably already seen everything that is available. That wasn't a show-stopper for me.

I read the book in a couple of hours (it is a fairly fast read), then dug out my old VHS tapes for my own Mr. Moto film festival - and the two went together like popcorn and a soda at the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Great companion for the Mr. Moto films.......2005-06-17

Howard Berlin has provided classic film fans with a great reference volume covering Peter Lorre's classic Mr. Moto film series (and the one ill advised remake from the 1960s). I enjoyed the insightful background information on Lorre, John Marquand, and Norman Foster, who directed most of the films.

The chapters devoted to each movie are accompanied by original poster art and stills from the films as well as analysis and production notes. Finally, there is a handy reference section containing a Marquand bibliograpy and interesting triva (including alternate titles for the films). The author's writing style is quite entertaining which makes this book very easy and fun to read.

Although out of general circulation, the Moto series is very popular with fans of this genre and this handy volume makes the films all the more enjoyable to watch. This book will also be useful for those not familiar with the films but wanting to learn more about them.

              Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Experienced players will dramatically improve their game.......2006-07-11

I've been playing spades for about 6 years now and I have a regular partner on Yahoo games. We have both read both of Steve's Spade books and our game has improved dramatically. When I read this book my rating was a steady 1895. After I read both Steve's books and put them into practice my rating is now a steady 2150. My regular partner and I get accused of cheating, when in fact we use the card signaling strategies from the Master Spades books and website. We have won many online tournies in our spade league.

This book will only work for you if you have an open mind, are an agressive player or a player who knows that going for the set in most cases is the smartest choice. Even if you're a fairly good player you can use the tips on covering nils, knowing when to spade in, ace-queen finesses' and just playing in general with various types of partners. I'd recommend.

                5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2005-03-15

Well, it's not in my best interest to give this review ... but I owe a debt of gratitude to the old Master, so I will. Steve's books are brilliant and clearly written, with many, many examples. It's great to take your time, chapter by chapter, to really absorb the concepts contained. I read and re-read each chapter, and practice my learnings at the zone. Each time I go back to re-read, I find my learning that much more solid. If you're a beginnner or an intermediate, or even an open-minded "expert", I recommend starting with Spades for Winners. Once you have those concepts down, move on to Master Spades. My rating at the zone jumped 300 points after reading Spades for Winners. I'm just starting with Master Spades and I sense that with some study and practice, the sky is the limit! So, if you enjoy spades and want to win more, read these books -- but only if you promise to be my partner and not my opponent!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for Advanced Techniques.......2004-07-26

Fleishman is the definitive source for advanced spades play. Don't read this book if you're a beginner or just want to play for fun. But if you can handle advanced spades techniques, this is a great place to start.

1 out of 5 stars A Total Waste of Time and Money.......2004-03-15

If you have $18 and six months of time , then get this Book. It is boring, confusing and loaded with a lot of useless information - unless you are a Bridge player. This brings the toal pages for both of Mr. Fleishman's books to over seven hundred - and that is just too much for a simple card game like Spades. Save your hard earned cash.

1 out of 5 stars Poor and a total waste of time.......2003-11-03

I read the first book at my partners request and was profoundly disgusted. It's quite obvious this person is educated in bridge but his spades examples and techniques are something my dad might talk about.

Very little if any of either book is original material. It is just bridge and whist revisted.

I advise all to save money and play more in the rated rooms on the zone. You can learn more in one week in the rated rooms that you can hope to get out of this book. If National spades champions exist in the spades world I would love to meet one.

                Can I get a refund?

2 out of 5 stars Old school leadership.......2007-10-05

The premise of this book is that leadership "is the ability to get the right things accomplished at the right time with the assistance of other people." Consequently, it teaches that the primary skills of a leader are technical and analytical skills - relationship skills come secondary.

If you agree with me that leadership in fact is much more about the ability to help other people getting the right things accomplished at the right time, you might still get something out of this book, but likely not as much as you would have hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Quite an unusual yet amazing book.......2004-10-09

I had my doubts that a well done skills-based book on management and leadership can be written, but here it is.

Step by step, Ponder lays the foundation to what every one of us leaders need to know--and be reminded of. Particularly like the chapter layout that is categorized around the skills themselves.

My teammates and I have read the book and we feel blessed that there is a professional book that is written for the layman that is easily read, makes sense, and written by someone who has been a manager, leader, and teacher of leadership.

Strongly recommend it for your teams--for $19, you'll recoup several times this amouont.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview and On Target.......2003-06-28

I thought I knew all I needed to know about leadership and management, but this book has added to my skills. It is easily read and covers all the areas needed in my role as a mid-level manager. I especially liked the categorization of leadership skills into 3 broad-but realistic-areas.

All of my team members will have this book on their desk.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Realistic, Insightful.......2002-01-30

I strongly recommend The Leader's Guide for several reasons. It is well thought out since it covers most of the events that a manager/supervisor encounters throughout the day. It also addresses the vexing strategic issues one must keep an eye on. Finally, the book is simply well written--easy to read, easy on the eyes, and easy to implement.

Our organization, a large publically held company, is using this in our leadership development classes because it is so useful.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding overview of leadership.......2002-01-04

This book lays out well the facts that most readers would enjoying seeing. It distills the many facets of leadership and management and pulls them all together into one coherent book that would be useful to many in the work force. As a senior manager in a large public company, I can attest that this book is right on the money, and my staff and I plan on using it as a definitive guide.
