Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ziegfeld Follies.......2005-04-20

Tom Tierney has traced the history of the costumes of showgirls in the Ziegfeld Follies beautifully with these paper dolls. The illustrations are excellent and the dolls themselves express the image of the Follies. The costumes range from styles which resemble evening gowns to fantastic creations completely removed from the mundane. There are even two gowns from a patriotic wartime (WW I) revue.
The contrasts between the Follies dating from Ziegfeld's lifetime and those bearing his name but produced after his death are also interesting.

4 out of 5 stars fun for the whole family.......2000-06-06

This book was both education and fun. It allows for parents to show their children the old past time opf playing with paper dolls as well as introducing children to America history such as the Ziegfeld Follies.

    Book Description

Prada, Gucci, Max Mara: high fashion is synonymous with luxury, glamor, pleasure, and Italy. Yet Italian fashion also has a dark history that has not previously been explored. The Fascism of 1930's Italy dominated more than just politics--it spilled over into modes of dress. Fashion under Fascism is the first book to consider this link in detail. Fashion often functions as a tacit means of making a social statement, but under Mussolini it vividly reflected political tyranny. Paulicelli explores the subtle yet sinister changes to the seemingly innocuous practices of everyday dress and shows why they were such a concern for the state. Importantly, she also demonstrates how these developments impacted on the global dominance of Italian fashion today. This fascinating book includes interviews with major designers, such as Fernanda Gattinoni and Micol Fontana, and sheds new light on the complicated relationship between style and politics.

      Book Description

What's more fun than a barrel full of monkeys? Why, Barry Ween, of course! For the uninitiated, Barry Ween is the smartest boy the world has ever seen. There's just one problem. No one can know. If word got out about his big brain it could land Barry, his family, and his best friend Jeremy (his sole confidant) in a heap of trouble. But when you're a boy genius, keeping the 'rents, the government, and the public at large in the dark is easier said than done! Mutated baby-sitters, talking gorillas, and a strangely familiar warrior woman from another dimension all put Barry's massive intellect to the test and make his big secret that much harder to keep! Gorilla Warfare collects issues #4-6 of the recent Monkey Tales mini-series, and faces the foul-mouthed ten-year-old off against his biggest challenge yet, with hilarious results!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Barry Stories.......2005-09-20

I have loved all of the Barry Ween Stories, but this collection is by far the most complete. Not only does Winik tell a tremendously funny, adventurous, and irreverent story, as only he can, but he also sheds light on the characters in ways that the previous issues only skimmed over. The last panels of the final story are completely wordless but speak worlds about what kind of a story teller Winik is.

Don't give it to a child, but definitely read it if you have even the most remote interest in comics.

4 out of 5 stars Another Solid Chapter In The Barry Ween Saga.......2002-10-02

Fair warning: Although Amazon lists this book as being suitable for ages 9 through 12, its subject matter is intended for mature audiences. Now, on with the show...

After reading and laughing like a mental patient at all of the other Barry Ween™ offerings that writer/artist Judd Winick & Oni™ Press has thrown out to the public, I was pretty stoked to get my hands on the latest TPB of the boy genius' further adventures. This time `round, Winick does things a bit differently with this titular anti-hero. The art is still relatively crude and reminiscent of comic-strip cartoon illustrations, but the dialogue is just as mean-spirited & profane as ever! This time `round the reader is treated a single story arc, rather than three stand-alone issues. From Barry's kindergarten memories of his first hook-up with his best bud Jeremy to a somewhat-accidental trip through space and time to a Conan™esque realm to rescue an `old' friend and back again, there's plenty of laughs to go `round, although not quite as many as in the previous `Monkey Tales' tome.

I found the first act to be the funniest as Barry flashes back to his toddler days and introduces his new-found playmate Jeremy to the joys of mags, virtual-reality circuses, cursing Tickle-Me-Elmo™ dolls, and turning the babysitter into a giant mutant ape. Then the story segues back to the present, where things get a bit more serious and dire-well, more so than the usual Barry Ween™ story-arc, anyway. Although the funny moments thin out significantly after the kindergarten adventure, there're several moments filled with enough good, clean (ahem) fun to keep you from taking things too seriously. Throw in a surprisingly touching epilogue, and-- well, you're just gonna hafta experience it for yourself...

Although I don't consider `Gorilla Warfare' to be the best entry in the Barry Ween™ series, it's still a pretty good read if you're lookin' for a little dollop o' obscenity-laden humor to help you get your yuks!

      Book Description

In this third hilarious trade paperback Barry Ween's bringing monkeys! He is the world's smartest human being; his "big brain," has a limitless capacity for knowledge, and Barry has no problem putting that knowledge to use. That's pretty cool when you consider the fact that he's only 10 years old. Unfortunately, when you have that kind of smarts, trouble is nearly a foregone conclusion! Giant, talking gorillas from other dimensions; drunken, smelly clans of Bigfeet; and a germ-filled monkey looking to cause the next outbreak - these are things that Barry has come to accept as normal. Compared to such frightening childhood rites of passage as girls and the first school dance, Barry would take all three scenarios without blinking. This trade paperback collects the first three issues of Eisner-nominated creator Judd Winick's mini-series and features the debut of Bezeruul, the giant talking ape!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This comic is in a class by itself.......2005-12-03

Barry's language may come as a shock to certain readers, but if you let that turn you off this book, you're doing yourself a grave disservice. Barry Ween is just about the funniest, most enjoyable read in comics, hands-down.

This collection finds Barry rescuing a giant gorilla from a zoo (at Jeremy's insistance), saving his schoolchums from an Ebola infected lab monkey (and shafting the lab jerks at the same time), and discovering the true culture of the Bigfoot. In each of these cases, Barry (with prodding from Jeremy) acts with compassion while putting himself at great risk, and, as a result, makes a friend in the simian category.

Barry, with his inestimable intelligence and impatience with dirtbags, always goes for the quick and dirty solution to a problem. But Jeremy, with his big heart and quivering lip, is always there to badger Barry into saving the monkey in distress. It is an irresistable combination of personalities, and this book is a worthy addition to the Barry Ween canon. Do yourself a favor, and buy it today!

1 out of 5 stars this is not WEEN.......2005-02-17

GO listen to some WEEN, this is a disgrace to the word WEEN

4 out of 5 stars Barry Ween, Friend to Apes.......2002-06-23

Barry Ween's at it again. Rather, the world around Barry is at it again, and the time has once again come for him to save the day, in one form or another. (It's tough being the world's smartest entity. It's even worse when you're a ten-year-old boy.)

First, Barry finds that the unusually large ape in the local zoo is not entirely what he seems. In the process of finding out exactly what's going on, Jeremy once again commits Barry to a course of action he otherwise would not have followed. But then, that's what Jeremy's there for, right? Once that crisis is averted, Barry must save his family from the terrors of the woods. (Haven't you always wanted to know the truth behind bigfoot?) And if that isn't enough, there's a school dance in Barry's future, and something about an ebola-infected monkey.

As with the rest of the Barry Ween series, this volume has all the craziness surrounding a foul- mouthed, world-dominating, charmingly insecure, arrogant, 10 year old genius and continues to hold on to those solid bits of humanity and sympathy that make Barry such a loveable character.

5 out of 5 stars Barry (and Judd Winick) does it again.......2002-01-16

Oh man... just when I thought the Barry Ween saga couldn't get any funnier, writer/artist Judd Winick somehow manages the impossible and gets me rollin' on the floor with even bigger fits of laughter than ever before. And I haven't even gotten beyond page four yet! Who knew a hyperactive ten-year-old's intricate & disturbingly gleeful descriptions of a rhino's restroom habits and monkey mating methods could be such an aneurysm-blowing yuk-fest?

Barry's third TPB outing features our titular ten-year-old genius and his slightly-thick sidekick Jeremy getting into all sorts of simian shenanigans. From helping a giant extradimensional gorilla get back home, to saving the `rents from a famished sasquatch, to racing against the clock to capture an ebola-infected lab monkey that crashes the school dance, Bar' and Jer' produce plenty of laughs with their profane banter and the bizarre predicaments they get into. Also included to help lighten the tone are scads of movie references, sex-ed jokes, the funniest take on the `tastes like chicken' cliché I've ever experienced, and other things you shouldn't laugh at, but do anyway!

Fair warning, though- be sure read this in the privacy of your own home. There's nothing worse than getting your hysterical laugh-on at the local comic-book shop and having the other geeks stare at you like you're some kinda weirdo (Now THERE'S a case of the pot callin' the kettle black if I ever saw one)! Trust me on this, I'm speaking from experience! (=)

      Book Description

Barry Ween is every boy's fantasy personified. His intellect is beyond any that has existed before. In his presence, Einstein looks like a moron. Working in the secret lab in the back of his house, Barry slowly inches towards dominating the world, and he would, too, if the laws of chaos weren't so strongly enforced. Protecting obnoxious aliens seeking asylum, getting transported to the pedophilic old west, being kidnapped by bungling government agents - it's all par for the course with Barry. It's tough being ten years old and smarter than everyone else, but no one is going to attack the task with as much gusto as Barry Ween. A hilarious experiment mixing mad scientist movies, the Little Rascals, and words little kids aren't supposed to say.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Barry Ween Version 1.0.......2006-04-13

Before Judd Winick became a writer of superhero comics, he wrote (and drew) this comedy series about a boy with a 350 IQ. Barry Ween is a foul-mouthed, sarcastic, junior mad scientist. Sometimes his experiments go wrong, which is where the humor comes from. Be advised that while this comic is about kids, it's not actually for kids (although it's ok for teens).

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly offbeat.......2005-09-19

I actually found this title by chance after reading an interview with Judd Winick and am happy to say that it was very well received.

This book is a grown up version of what comics should strive to be. It's funny, moving, and entertaining in a brilliantly foul mouthed and arrogant package.

Along with Plastic Man and She-Hulk, this comic books bridges the gap between what comics are today and what they can be on their best day. Simply put Winik's work is genius and should be experienced by everyone who has ever picked up a comic book.

I can't recommend this and every other Barry Ween collection enough to you.

One side note, this is not intended for children in any way. Look for other alternatives, like Plastic Man or Power Pack for young reader appropriate choices that are still enteraining for adults.

5 out of 5 stars Rolling on the floor funny.......2005-01-14

All too few books/comics/films/tv shows/whatever still have the nerve to pull out all the stops, & make your laugh 'til you shriek, laugh 'til you could yourself an injury.

Barry Ween, bless his foul-mouthed tuchus, is one of them.

Dammit! I wanted a Death Ray at his age!

      Buy this!

      5 out of 5 stars Extremely Funny.......2003-08-25

Barry Ween is one of the funniest books I've read in the last few years. There were several points where I nearly stopped breathing from laughter. Barry Ween is a Boy Genius. His friend, Jeremy, has a knack for getting into trouble. Mostly Barry gets Jeremy out of trouble. This series has brilliantly funny humor. Barry's vocabulary is very R-rated though. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4 out of 5 stars Not your everyday neighborhood kid........2002-07-15

This volume collects the first three issues of The Adventures of Barry Ween: Boy Genius.

Barry Ween is not the boy next door. At least, you'd better hope he's not. If he is, chances are you probably don't want to know, because you probably have radioactive waste stored under your house, have had your entire life history scoped out, have had your future pre-determined, and your cat is probably a clone.

Barry is not your typical 10 year old. As he says, if his IQ could be measured, it'd loom somewhere around 350. He remembers his time in the womb. He has, however, hidden his staggering intelligence from his family and from most of his 'peers.' The only one who seems to know the truth about Barry is his best friend Jeremy. The attraction there is certainly not because Barry recognizes a kindred spirit. While not dumb, Jeremy would rather spend his energy thinking about [breasts] and food than world domination.

If you're familiar with The Tick, you might remember Charles. Barry reminds me of Charles, except not as manic, more intelligent, and with a much more ... colorful ... vocabulary. But, despite the conniving, calculating, impatient, overbearing nature of our boy hero, he has a soft side (though he'd never admit it). Whether working to change Jeremy back into a human (long story), or saving his classmates from a group of Austrian art thieves, Barry generally finds a way to do 'the right thing' to get his friends and himself out of sticky situations, swearing up a blue streak all the while.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to reading more.

                        Tim,
I never really read your book. However, I did give it 5 stars based on a medly of things including, but not limited to: the graphic art on the cover, the garage, and quite possibly in his own unique way: Rick. Anyway, drop me a line: greg@cogan.ca I'll be in Edinburgh for the year starting in the fall.

                        1 out of 5 stars Don't bother........2003-10-10

Any electronic music book with "How to..." in the title should be approached with caution and this one is no exception.

It begins with a section on getting started - not in remixing mind you,but what equipment you should get. If you had been producing for more than a month you would probably have this gear anyway. The information in it can be found in any book on music production, and there is very little information which is specific to remixing. There is a chapter dedicated to visual remixing, and this seems to be about the biggest chapter in the book (complete with a too long interview), and also the most irrelevant. Other chapters cover the basics of eqing, and how to loop sounds - all information which can be found in other books which are far better. When I first flicked through it there seemed to be a chapter dedicated to most aspects of remixing, but these are generally only 5 or 6 pages padded out with vague, and sometimes plain wrong and misleading statements. For example:

In the section on basic audio formats...

"Minidisc: A format that is slowly becoming an accepted medium for home studio producers, who favour the compression it employs."!

All audio engineers will tell you they DON'T use minidisc because of the compression it employs.

On eqing brass and wind sounds:

"A baritone sax is used for the bottom end - it's not just a clever name - while an alto sax occupies a toppier EQ level. Brass and other wind instruments, manwhile, have a similar tonal quality to vocals, and so similar treatments apply, since all three need to lie on top of the mix."

Basically a vague paragraph not really saying anything.

About 40 percent of the book is a glossary of audio terms - not what I bought a book on remixing for. All in all it seems to be written for someone who decided yesterday they want to be a producer for a month or two after hearing a song they liked on the radio.

If you already are a producer looking for something to give you a few new ideas, avoid this turkey - you won't learn anything new. If you are looking to get into electronic music production, avoid this turkey, there are far better books out there. By the way, it comes with a cd too. I haven't taken it out if its' cover. If it's anything like the book it's going to stay there.

                        Avoid.

I like this book because of the author's confidence in recommending lines that work. I found the Bg5 and Staunton ideas to be very helpful.

It started well with a section on thematic positions and the associated tactics likely to occur. You could then spot these in the games to follow. The author also suggests lines for white though I like the Karlsbad Nh3 and Leningrad Stonewall ideas for white too.

The publishers have done an excellent job in layout, diagrams, typefaces etc. ('Quality in Chess' eg Experts vs the Sicilian, please take note of how it should be done!)

The application of economics to major contemporary real world problems--housing, medical care, discrimination, the economic development of nations--is the theme of this new book that tackles these and other issues head on in plain language, as distinguished from the usual jargon of economists. It examines economic policies not simply in terms of their immediate effects but also in terms of their later repercussions, which are often very different and longer lasting. The interplay of politics with economics is another theme of Applied Economics, whose examples are drawn from experiences around the world, showing how similar incentives and constraints tend to produce similar outcomes among very disparate peoples and cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Great Explanation of Ecomomic Theory (without boring theory).......2007-01-05

The book clearly explains the impact of political decisions on the economic well being of a country or economy. It teaches that intentions and outcomes are not the same thing.

                        4 out of 5 stars A bit of overlap.......2006-11-19

Perhaps it's because I've read so many of Dr. Sowell's books and columns, but I'm beginning to see a lot overlap in what he writes.

                        1. He has talked about the role of navigable rivers in economic development several times before-- not least in his "Migrations and Culture" book among other places (columns).

                        2. The notion that the amount of "dead capital" that is sitting in places like Haiti and other third world countries that cannot be erected because of poorly functioning legal systems is not new either. This is something that was covered at great length in William Easterly's book "Misadventures in the Tropics" and (I believe) in "Wealth and Poverty of Nations" (David Landes). Both of them are great books. Of course, Dr. Sowell writes about them in an interesting and easy-to-understand way, but the book feels very much like a secondary source since I know exactly where these arguments come from

                        3. A lot of the data on differences in income between different ethnic groups was trotted out from older works (but updated), so one gets a strong sense of deja vu when reading this.

Overall, it's a good and very readable work. It is worth reading for people who never bother to fill in their ideas with specific case studies or case examples of what *actually happened* under certain circumstances.

His discussion of health care economics was also very interesting and made the whole book worth its purchase price. So, on the strength of that alone, I recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars what happens when you grow up.......2006-08-03

Several years ago, my father forced me to read Sowell's Basic Economics. Although I began it very begrudgingly, the further I read, the more interested I became. That interest eventually turned into a mild sense of outrage - it amazed me that something so "basic" as human motivations could be boiled down to dollar signs - but I realized the truth behind it. Hardly anyone does anything simply for the good of mankind. Perhaps it's cynical, but turn on daytime TV and tell me I'm wrong. Thomas Sowell has a remarkable ability to take something as confounding as economics and explain it in terms that even I (a confirmed number-hater and English maven) could understand without having to resort to fistfuls of aspirin. Although I read the first book under duress, I gladly bought this one for myself. Dad would be so proud!

5 out of 5 stars The law of unintended consequences.......2006-02-11

Dr. Sowell does a superb job of explaining the unintended consequences of well-intentioned, but incompletely thought-out public policy. as a highlight, Dr. Sowell details the downstream, negative impact of rent control laws on the very people the laws are intended to protect. Rent control laws mean less income for the owner, more people in line to rent, and less income for the owner to use in the maintainance of his property. As a result the very properties protected by rent control fall into disrepair and are then abandoned.
As a non-economist, I found the concepts and illustrations very accessible.

                        4 out of 5 stars Fun reading.......2005-12-08

Regardless if you are studying economics, or looking for some exposure to the way such people think, this book will be a fun adventure. The chapters are detailed case studies for the how economics applies to the major issues of today. Written for a general audience, the book is perfect to round out some thoughts in economics. I have always thought that reading economics is the only way to understand it, this book is a great step in that direction.
