The Adventures of Barry Ween, Boy Genius 4: Gorilla Warfare
Judd Winnick Manufacturer: Oni Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1929998198 |
Book Description
What's more fun than a barrel full of monkeys? Why, Barry Ween, of course! For the uninitiated, Barry Ween is the smartest boy the world has ever seen. There's just one problem. No one can know. If word got out about his big brain it could land Barry, his family, and his best friend Jeremy (his sole confidant) in a heap of trouble. But when you're a boy genius, keeping the 'rents, the government, and the public at large in the dark is easier said than done! Mutated baby-sitters, talking gorillas, and a strangely familiar warrior woman from another dimension all put Barry's massive intellect to the test and make his big secret that much harder to keep! Gorilla Warfare collects issues #4-6 of the recent Monkey Tales mini-series, and faces the foul-mouthed ten-year-old off against his biggest challenge yet, with hilarious results!Customer Reviews:
The Best of the Barry Stories.......2005-09-20
Another Solid Chapter In The Barry Ween Saga.......2002-10-02
After reading and laughing like a mental patient at all of the other Barry Ween offerings that writer/artist Judd Winick & Oni Press has thrown out to the public, I was pretty stoked to get my hands on the latest TPB of the boy genius' further adventures. This time `round, Winick does things a bit differently with this titular anti-hero. The art is still relatively crude and reminiscent of comic-strip cartoon illustrations, but the dialogue is just as mean-spirited & profane as ever! This time `round the reader is treated a single story arc, rather than three stand-alone issues. From Barry's kindergarten memories of his first hook-up with his best bud Jeremy to a somewhat-accidental trip through space and time to a Conanesque realm to rescue an `old' friend and back again, there's plenty of laughs to go `round, although not quite as many as in the previous `Monkey Tales' tome.
I found the first act to be the funniest as Barry flashes back to his toddler days and introduces his new-found playmate Jeremy to the joys of mags, virtual-reality circuses, cursing Tickle-Me-Elmo dolls, and turning the babysitter into a giant mutant ape. Then the story segues back to the present, where things get a bit more serious and dire-well, more so than the usual Barry Ween story-arc, anyway. Although the funny moments thin out significantly after the kindergarten adventure, there're several moments filled with enough good, clean (ahem) fun to keep you from taking things too seriously. Throw in a surprisingly touching epilogue, and-- well, you're just gonna hafta experience it for yourself...
Although I don't consider `Gorilla Warfare' to be the best entry in the Barry Ween series, it's still a pretty good read if you're lookin' for a little dollop o' obscenity-laden humor to help you get your yuks!

The Adventures of Barry Ween Boy Genius 3

Book Description
In this third hilarious trade paperback Barry Ween's bringing monkeys! He is the world's smartest human being; his "big brain," has a limitless capacity for knowledge, and Barry has no problem putting that knowledge to use. That's pretty cool when you consider the fact that he's only 10 years old. Unfortunately, when you have that kind of smarts, trouble is nearly a foregone conclusion! Giant, talking gorillas from other dimensions; drunken, smelly clans of Bigfeet; and a germ-filled monkey looking to cause the next outbreak - these are things that Barry has come to accept as normal. Compared to such frightening childhood rites of passage as girls and the first school dance, Barry would take all three scenarios without blinking. This trade paperback collects the first three issues of Eisner-nominated creator Judd Winick's mini-series and features the debut of Bezeruul, the giant talking ape!Customer Reviews:

Barry Ween, Friend to Apes.......2002-06-23
First, Barry finds that the unusually large ape in the local zoo is not entirely what he seems. In the process of finding out exactly what's going on, Jeremy once again commits Barry to a course of action he otherwise would not have followed. But then, that's what Jeremy's there for, right? Once that crisis is averted, Barry must save his family from the terrors of the woods. (Haven't you always wanted to know the truth behind bigfoot?) And if that isn't enough, there's a school dance in Barry's future, and something about an ebola-infected monkey.
As with the rest of the Barry Ween series, this volume has all the craziness surrounding a foul- mouthed, world-dominating, charmingly insecure, arrogant, 10 year old genius and continues to hold on to those solid bits of humanity and sympathy that make Barry such a loveable character.
Barry (and Judd Winick) does it again.......2002-01-16
Barry's third TPB outing features our titular ten-year-old genius and his slightly-thick sidekick Jeremy getting into all sorts of simian shenanigans. From helping a giant extradimensional gorilla get back home, to saving the `rents from a famished sasquatch, to racing against the clock to capture an ebola-infected lab monkey that crashes the school dance, Bar' and Jer' produce plenty of laughs with their profane banter and the bizarre predicaments they get into. Also included to help lighten the tone are scads of movie references, sex-ed jokes, the funniest take on the `tastes like chicken' cliché I've ever experienced, and other things you shouldn't laugh at, but do anyway!
Fair warning, though- be sure read this in the privacy of your own home. There's nothing worse than getting your hysterical laugh-on at the local comic-book shop and having the other geeks stare at you like you're some kinda weirdo (Now THERE'S a case of the pot callin' the kettle black if I ever saw one)! Trust me on this, I'm speaking from experience! (=)

The Adventures of Barry Ween: Boy Genius 2.0

Book Description
Barry Ween is every boy's fantasy personified. His intellect is beyond any that has existed before. In his presence, Einstein looks like a moron. Working in the secret lab in the back of his house, Barry slowly inches towards dominating the world, and he would, too, if the laws of chaos weren't so strongly enforced. Protecting obnoxious aliens seeking asylum, getting transported to the pedophilic old west, being kidnapped by bungling government agents - it's all par for the course with Barry. It's tough being ten years old and smarter than everyone else, but no one is going to attack the task with as much gusto as Barry Ween. A hilarious experiment mixing mad scientist movies, the Little Rascals, and words little kids aren't supposed to say.Customer Reviews:

Barry Ween is not the boy next door. At least, you'd better hope he's not. If he is, chances are you probably don't want to know, because you probably have radioactive waste stored under your house, have had your entire life history scoped out, have had your future pre-determined, and your cat is probably a clone.
Barry is not your typical 10 year old. As he says, if his IQ could be measured, it'd loom somewhere around 350. He remembers his time in the womb. He has, however, hidden his staggering intelligence from his family and from most of his 'peers.' The only one who seems to know the truth about Barry is his best friend Jeremy. The attraction there is certainly not because Barry recognizes a kindred spirit. While not dumb, Jeremy would rather spend his energy thinking about [breasts] and food than world domination.
If you're familiar with The Tick, you might remember Charles. Barry reminds me of Charles, except not as manic, more intelligent, and with a much more ... colorful ... vocabulary. But, despite the conniving, calculating, impatient, overbearing nature of our boy hero, he has a soft side (though he'd never admit it). Whether working to change Jeremy back into a human (long story), or saving his classmates from a group of Austrian art thieves, Barry generally finds a way to do 'the right thing' to get his friends and himself out of sticky situations, swearing up a blue streak all the while.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to reading more.

Book Description

wonderful man, but smells terribly.......2005-02-01
Don't bother........2003-10-10
It begins with a section on getting started - not in remixing mind you,but what equipment you should get. If you had been producing for more than a month you would probably have this gear anyway. The information in it can be found in any book on music production, and there is very little information which is specific to remixing. There is a chapter dedicated to visual remixing, and this seems to be about the biggest chapter in the book (complete with a too long interview), and also the most irrelevant. Other chapters cover the basics of eqing, and how to loop sounds - all information which can be found in other books which are far better. When I first flicked through it there seemed to be a chapter dedicated to most aspects of remixing, but these are generally only 5 or 6 pages padded out with vague, and sometimes plain wrong and misleading statements. For example:
In the section on basic audio formats...
"Minidisc: A format that is slowly becoming an accepted medium for home studio producers, who favour the compression it employs."!
All audio engineers will tell you they DON'T use minidisc because of the compression it employs.
On eqing brass and wind sounds:
"A baritone sax is used for the bottom end - it's not just a clever name - while an alto sax occupies a toppier EQ level. Brass and other wind instruments, manwhile, have a similar tonal quality to vocals, and so similar treatments apply, since all three need to lie on top of the mix."
Basically a vague paragraph not really saying anything.
About 40 percent of the book is a glossary of audio terms - not what I bought a book on remixing for. All in all it seems to be written for someone who decided yesterday they want to be a producer for a month or two after hearing a song they liked on the radio.
If you already are a producer looking for something to give you a few new ideas, avoid this turkey - you won't learn anything new. If you are looking to get into electronic music production, avoid this turkey, there are far better books out there. By the way, it comes with a cd too. I haven't taken it out if its' cover. If it's anything like the book it's going to stay there.
Avoid.

Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One
Thomas Sowell Manufacturer: Basic Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0465081436 Release Date: 2003-11-11 |
Book Description
The ideal companion volume to the acclaimed Basic Economics--a guide to how our economic decisions turn out in practical terms. The application of economics to major contemporary real world problems--housing, medical care, discrimination, the economic development of nations--is the theme of this new book that tackles these and other issues head on in plain language, as distinguished from the usual jargon of economists. It examines economic policies not simply in terms of their immediate effects but also in terms of their later repercussions, which are often very different and longer lasting. The interplay of politics with economics is another theme of Applied Economics, whose examples are drawn from experiences around the world, showing how similar incentives and constraints tend to produce similar outcomes among very disparate peoples and cultures.
