        Book Description

Are the combined human resources at EUROPEAN COLOUR PLC productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on EUROPEAN COLOUR PLC, MANCHESTER, United Kingdom.

                  Book Description

In what is still the standard survey of German historical drama, Das deutsche Geschichtsdrama (1952), Friedrich Sengle understands "historical drama" as that in which objective history is blended with an idea that is the basis of its dramatic coherence and force. This idea inevitably becomes the engine of a dramatic action, inclining the theatergoer to become wholly engaged with dramatic characters in a dramatic present, rather than with "real" figures in a historical past. Such plays (for instance Schiller's Maria Stuart) may remain broadly "true to history," but the experience they afford is often not historical; that is, it may be emotionally and intellectually compelling, but it will not be historical in the sense of causing us, in our present, to become engaged with our relationship with past figures and events and their continued relevance for us. Alan Menhennet identifies and analyzes examples of German drama that are historical in the stricter sense: not only in terms of the provenance of the material, but also in that, while remaining dramatic in nature, they do convey a historical experience. By means of a critical survey extending from the seventeenth century to the twentieth, in the contexts of literary history, the philosophy of history, and German history from the Thirty Years' War to the Second World War, Menhennet provides a complement to Sengle's still-valuable study. Major figures treated include Gryphius, Lessing, Schiller, Goethe, Grillparzer, Hebbel, Schnitzler, and Brecht. There is no competing work in English.Alan Menhennet is Professor Emeritus of German at the University of Newcastle, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. He is author of Grimmelshausen the Storyteller (Camden House, 1997).a href="http://www.camden-house.com/pdfs/hegd.pdf">Click here to view the introduction/a> (PDF file 64KB)

                            Product Description

This fine Red Dog Music title teaches 101 interesting and varied fingerstyle accompaniment patterns suitable for students, teachers, and working musicians. The patterns, which range from very easy to intermediate in difficulty, cover a wide variety of sounds applicable to popular music, folk, blues, country, and gospel. Because this is a collection, and not a graded method, it is not necessary to work through the examples in chronological order. Simply find a pattern you like on the CD and try playing it on your guitar. If the chosen pattern is too difficult, save it for later and try another one now. You will soon find that this sort of exploration is both fun and instructional. Many fingerpicking books demonstrate all patterns in a fixed chord position, but this is not actually how we fingerpick in real life. A number of the examples here have moving notes that add interesting motion to the basic harmony. Each pattern is played four times at a moderate tempo on the companion CD. A drum count-off helps the user begin playing with the recorded pattern on the correct beat. A helpful chord theory essay rounds out the book. Excellent for bite-size supplemental study in music lessons, too.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book, but light on technical terms........2006-02-06

This is certainly an acceptable book on listening to classical music for beginners, and Mr. Plotkin obviously knows a great deal about the subject. However, the author's introductory promise not to treat us like "dummies" or "idiots" (references to other guidebooks he wants to distance himself from), are not wholly kept. I found much value in the content of the book, but the tone of the writing is unbearably "dick and jane-ish" - to the point that I sometimes just had to put the book down and walk away for a while. In particular the lecture on listening is profoundly didactic.

I also was disappointed that there was not more attention paid to the technical terms used for different aspects of classical music. There is definitely no succinct glossary of terms. If you want to know this stuff, I encourage a hunt and peck journey on wikipedia.

One very good feature of the book is an extensive list of concert halls, internet resources, and other bits of ephemera of interest to the classical music novice.

Overall, it's a decent book to own, but I didn't like it enough to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A New Classical Music Convert.......2005-12-07

At its core this book teaches you how to listen to classical music. The general format of the book is giving some theory and history, and then has you listen to a piece of music. The author then explains the music and also tells you what to listen for.

For example the book starts off by developing your listening skills. You’ll learn about various instruments in the orchestra and then listen to a few recordings. Then the author teaches you how to interpret the music, and how to form your own ideas about it.

Once the foundation is laid, you’ll learn how to listen to symphonies by various composers. After that you’ll focus on music for a specific instrument - piano, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The last section of the book is about how to listen to vocal music and how to feel music.

One thing to beware of is that you will need access to the music to get the full benefit of the book. I personally used the online music service Rhapsody which had most pieces of music. Another thing is this book is not a quick read, so be prepared to spend a lot of time listening to music.

If you a beginner to classical music I highly recommend this book. My perception of classical music has been forever changed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners!!.......2005-06-14

If you are a beginner and would like to know about western classical music, this book is a great start. The writing style is clear, explanatory and authoritative.
I am a beginner and I am just starting to learn about classical music. I read the book, download music from itunes and then compare my notes with the authors. This gives me a chance to know classical music from a professional.
So, if you buy one book on classical music, buy this one, if you buy two books, buy this one and some other book.

                                Book Description

This book shows marketing professionals how to position their products to take advantage of the $77.7 billion luxury market.

In &I, readers will get the first research-based study of the 15 million truly affluent households that make up the leading edge of the new luxury market. Pamela Danziger notes that the luxury market is changing radically from the conspicuous-consumption consumers of the 1990s. Danziger conducted a two-year research study of luxury consumers with incomes of $75,000 and above and discovered a totally new type of luxury consumer. Called the ""butterflies,"" these most affluent of affluent consumers have emerged from their luxurious cocoons and are turning their focus from the home to the outside world.

Designed to give marketing practitioners an insight into what luxury means to the consumer, &I covers the natural evolution as today's luxuries become tomorrow's necessities, as products move ""from the classes to the masses.""

                                Readers will learn:

                                * How to ""get it right for the masses"" and how to ""get it right for the classes"" with profiles of companies that exhibit best practices in luxury marketing.

                                * Why luxury isn't about material things or how much something costs. It is how the product or service connects with the dreams, desires, and passions of the consumer.

                                * The different drivers and motivators for luxury consumers.

Danziger outlines the purchase behavior and preferences in the nine categories of home luxury products (e.g., furniture, art, antiques), four personal luxuries (e.g., automobiles, fashion), and six experiential luxuries (e.g., luxury travel, spa/beauty treatments). As businesses compete in an increasingly crowded marketplace, Danziger also describes the six key consumer trends in luxury marketing and strategies that marketers can implement to build their luxury brands.

This is one of the two books that I purchased about luxury products, the other being Trading Up. After seeing the recommendations on this book I thought it would be an insightful read, instead it regurgitates the form and data of "Trading Up." The author also makes note of the book.

I was dissapointed by this book and the way it was written. The author presents a deluge of data and consumer opinions. There are numerous charts that present surveys and polls but the book fails to extrapolate on the data. In numerous occasions, references to specific years in which a certan luxury good had higher growth or lower growth are cited but the author failed to site why and if this trend would continue. It also fails to describe why luxury goods companies have done so well. Only a brief page or two is written about a company and it's products but fails to establish what drives demand for luxury goods.

The book scratches the surface of the psychological buying factors for luxury goods, other than for the "experience." For a much better read, read Trading Up.

According to this author, it can be tougher than ever to sell luzury goods to the American consumer. In the past, factors like snob appeal and appeals to class and "taste" were enough to get people to buy certain items. They wanted to appear to be "in the know" or to be like certain people who were.
These days, it is much harder to get people to buy luxury items, to drop the bucks and make the purchase seem worth the price. The difference between the past and the present? Creating a total and even MEANINGFUL experience, convincing the buyer that purchasing a particular item or experience will enhance his or her life. They might even want to feel that spending a zillion bucks is a PRACTICAL decision.
The author not only explains why buyers purchase luxury items today but will show you how to go about convincing them to buy YOUR items. If you aren't in the business of selling luxury items, you'll still find this a fascinating read - as it shows you WHY you might fall prey to the appeal of certain "luxury" goods, for better or worse.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Well Organized.......2005-11-14

In this book, the author gives a thorough analysis on the contemporary U.S. luxury market and presents principles to the marketers who would like to capture this market successfully.

In the first two chapters of the book, the author defines today's luxury market and the term "new luxury." In short, new luxury is more about experience than about money or expensive things, although such an experience cannot be obtained without money. As Americans, especially the baby boomers, have more disposable income to spend, what they crave is the experience of self-actualization and expression of individuality. This is different from the old snobbish and arrogant concept of luxury, which emphasizes exclusivity. For example, having some quietness for taking a cup of good coffee while enjoying the view of the city is counted as a luxurious event by some people.

In chapter three, the author defines the consumers in this luxury market with basic demographic information. In subsequent chapters, discussion continues along the four traditional Ps in Marketing: Product (what different luxury consumer groups buy and why), Price, Promotion, and Place (where they shop). One interesting finding is the fact that, these shoppers are frugal and they are bargain hunters. They buy everything on sale unless sales are not common in a category, such as fragrances and beauty products. They do not need to shop this way but do so because they are wise and value-conscious.

Then the author's writing turns to the marketers with important advice derived from the nature of this market, distinguishing the myths from the facts. The last chapter is a summary of the book.

The contents of this book are based on empirical research performed by the author and her colleagues. In addition,
it includes the personal opinions of many people doing business in the luxury market. These interview excerpts add valuable practical information to the book and enhance the validity of the contents. The writing style of the author is clear and easy to understand.

I see this book as another step beyond Trading Up. It gives an even more focused treatment to this social trend of consumer spending. The title of the book, Let Them Eat Cake, is derived from the author's statement "Let your consumers go to Wal-Mart to get their plain white bread, but when they come to you, `let them eat cake here!'"

5 out of 5 stars WalMart Owns the Bottom Market, Move Upscale.......2005-01-28

The up-scale market is where you almost have to go in face of WalMart. It's also where the money is. The affluent consumers have incomes two-and-one half times larger than the average and their households spend twice as much on all kinds of consumer goods and services. This book, based on original research conducted by the author defines exactly this consumer, how to market to them, and how this market has changed as the Baby Boomers have evolved into this segment. The research was conducted on the top 25% of US households with an income of over $75,000.

The author is a nationally recognized expert specializing in consumer insights and president of Unity Marketing, a marketing consulting firm she founded in 1992.
