Book Description
In a series of original readings of the work of artists from Kathe Kollwitz and Georgia O'Keeffe to Helen Cahdwick and Laura Godfrey Issacs, Rosemary Betterton explores how women artists have addressed the changing relationship between women, the body and its representation in art. In detailed critical essays that range from the analysis of maternal imagery in the work of German artists at the turn of the century, to the unrepresented body in contemporary abstract painting. Betterton argues that women's art practices offer ways of engaging with our fascinations and fears of the female body.
Reflecting the shift within feminist art over the last decade,
An Intimate Distance sets the reinscription of the body within women's art practice in the context of current debates on the body, including reproductive science, maternal subjectivity and the concept of "body horror" in relation to food, aging and sex. Drawing on recent theories of embodiment developed within feminist philosphyand psychoanalytic theory, the essays reveal how th epermeable boundaries between nature and culture, the female body and technology are being crossed in the work of women artists.

Book Description
This new catalogue documents a recent exhibition at the Starmach Gallery in Krakow, presenting Andy Warhol's Polaroid work during the last two decades of his life. The 65 color images here include Warhol's self-portraits--occasionally in drag or another kind of costume--as well as Warhol's pictures of celebrities and artists from all fields. Included here are artists such as Keith Haring, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Francesco Clemente, and Jean-Michel Basquiat; writers such as William S. Burroughs and Truman Capote; and actors including Liza Minelli and Dennis Hopper, among numerous others. These images mark out a territory all their own within Warhol's oeuvre, a space where both living humanity and the spectacle in which it is woven can coexist. Also featured here is ''King for a Day,'' Francesco Clemente's brilliant and revelatory essay on Andy Warhol.
Customer Reviews:
Very little for the money.......2002-01-31
This large sized, but very thin book is printed on a large format but the photographs within are to scale (ie. Polaroid instant photo size). Very little text, though it does provide technical information, such as the size and date of each photograph at the end. The only problem is that the techinical information is almost exactly the same on each Polaroid snapshot, with the same dimensions and film type used, etc. It also only spans a short time period of Warhol's work. Very boring.
Book Description
Perhaps no other artist from the second half of the 20th century is as familiar to the public as Andy Warhol--and his self-portraits can hardly be said to have played a lackluster role with regards to the artist's celebrity. U.S. postage stamp anyone? Occupying a position of central importance in his oeuvre, Warhol's self-portraits also occupy a consistent, long-running one. From the first self-images in gouache painted by 16-year-old Andrew Warhol in the mid-40s to the fright-wig series completed shortly before his death in February 1987, Andy Warhol continually used self-portraiture to reflect on his position and social status as an artist, performing a variety of roles in the process. Yet he never made use of the traditional topos of the artist's self-portrait; his fascination with transience and death is constantly present, as in his other works. Although a seemingly endless number of books have been published on Warhol's various work groups, this is the first monograph devoted exclusively to his self-portraits. The accompanying essays discuss different aspects of the theme and examine Warhol's self-portraits in the light of an expanded concept of the artist's self-portrait in the 20th century.

Customer Reviews:
My Third Grader Loved It!.......2007-06-10
I wanted to look into this book because I hadn't really seen any of the graphic novels. My daughter is already an avid reader, so I didn't know if she "needed" a book like this. When I showed it to her, she thought it looked really funny. As anticipated, it didn't take her long to read it, but she said, "I want to read it again. I want to read it again right NOW!"
If your child is a reluctant reader, this comic book formatted novel might help her get inspired, and if she already reads everything in sight, like my daughter, she will probably love yet another way to process text on a page.
My queen!.......2007-02-21
I just checked out from the libray and read Babymouse: Queen of the World! by brother-sister team Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm. It's a graphic novel, something I rarely read (I've only read two true graphic novels besides this one, and several hybrids).
The book was adorable, fun, and Babymouse is totally my kinda gal. From her huge imagination to her love of books (and dislike of books without proper endings) to her spunk and style, she's my newest fictional pal. I can't wait to read the rest in the series.
TYPICAL!.......2006-10-25
My daughter received this book as a gift from her teacher, and wow, what a wonderful gift it is. If you're looking for a book to sit down and have your 6 -10 year old read to you, this one is perfect. It's displayed in an artistic comic-book style, not rigid sequential format, but lovely black and white inks and very clear and easy to read prose. Needless to say we've read books 1 and 3 and just purchased 2 and 4. Babymouse is a treasure!
Babymouse Rules.......2006-08-07
I am a 4th Grader and I liked the part where Babymouse's locker attacked her and the Squid spit her out. This book was real good because it had funny pictures and the words were funny. I have never read a book like this before. I also like her stories because they have drama and action. I think only girls would like book becuse the main character is a girl and the book has lots of pink in it. My Mom also read the book and it made her laugh. One thing about Babymouse, she loves cupcakes like me.
Babymouse: Queen of the World!.......2006-07-09
This is the first book in the Babymouse series. It is a comic book, and everything is black, white, and pink. Babymouse is a mouse, and she is in middle school. (The next part of my review tells what hapoens in the book, so if you haven't read it yet you might want to skip this review.)
In the book, Babymouse has daydreams about being Queen of the World. One day her locker gets stuck, and her friend Wilson the Weasel comes and helps her open it. He invites her to her house to watch a movie. Then at lunch her banana rolls off the table and under another table where Felicia, a girl that Babymouse wants to be friends with, is sitting. Babymouse crawls under the table and overhears Felicia telling her friends that she is having a sleepover.
Now Babymouse wants to be invited. One day Felicia forgets to do her book report so Babymouse lets her have hers so she'll get an invitation to the party. Babymouse goes to the party, but she's bored and she accidentally spills pink nail polish all over Felicia. Then she remembers Wilson so when Felicia makes her make the popcorn while they watch a boring movie, Babymouse gets mad and dumps the popcorn on Felicia's head. Then she leaves and goes to Wilson's house and realizes that her life isn't as boring as she thinks it is.
In the book, Babymouse often has daydreams and isn't paying attention to what's really happening. When she opens her locker, a monster eats her homework. When someone tells her to pass a note to the person behind her, she's a detective. Of course none of this really happens, but it does show it in the book the way Babymouse imagined it.
The books in this series are:
#1 Babymouse: Queen of the World!
#2 Babymouse: Our Hero
#3 Babymouse: Beach Babe
#4 Babymouse: Rock Star (coming soon)

In her snappy compendium Wild Women, Autumn Stephens showed what a good punchy quote can do to enliven a dull day. Whether you're looking for ammunition to aim between a rival's ears or just fishing for pithy phrases to amuse yourself, her collection Loose Cannons should supply you with several statements you wouldn't mind tattooing on a prominent spot. Questioning whether endless dieting is really the route to self-esteem? "You're not fat, you're in the wrong country," plus-size model Denise Walker says flatly. Looking for the brighter side of a romance gone south? "It's like magic," marvels humorist Merrill Markoe. "When you live by yourself, all your annoying habits are gone." Wondering what happened to your ship? "I rang for ice, but this is ridiculous," a Titanic survivor is reputed to have said in a quote that is surely apocryphal. Annoyingly arch references to the women quoted take away some of the fun, but the book is a hoot overall.
Customer Reviews:
what fun!.......2001-04-01
A must-have for anyone who collects quotations, or anyone who enjoys hearing strong women speak their minds.
Wise & Witty Words from 'Wild' Women.......2000-11-14
Such a pleasure to read and share these smart and sassy quotes from a great variety of famous and/or historical women! I simply could not read these pages quietly-- these gems are meant to be shared! The 'wild' womens' observations span the spectrum from naughty oneliners about bigamy to sisterly encouragements to wise & ironic commentaries on history and society. I reccomend this book unhesitatingly as a gift for yourself, or for a friend who would enjoy thoughtful humor from a fully-female source.
This belongs on every coffee table and in every bathroom........1998-08-24
I bought this for my three teenage daughters who devoured it and passed it on to me. In this book I expected to find quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt or Amelia Earhart, and I did. However, the quotes by these luminaries were not the quotes one usually sees. Even more surprising were good quotes by less famous figures. Most surprising was that my favorite was a Sharon Stone quote. Check it out.
Book Description
Reality Television has little to do with reality and everything to do with television form and content. Reality TV takes the reality television phenomenon to be a significant movement within documentary and factual programming. This book analyses new and hybrid genres including observational documentaries, talk shows, game shows, docu-soaps, dramatic reconstructions, law and order programming and twenty-four/seven formats such as Big Brother and Survivor. These programs, both popular with audiences and heavily debated in the media; are at the center of heated debates. These discussions focus on tabloidization, media ethics, voyeurism and the representation of the real. Through detailed case studies, this book breaks new ground by linking two major themes together: the production of realism and its relationship to revelation. It addresses 'truth' telling, confession and the production of knowledge about the self and its place in the world within forms that produce new configurations of social and media space.

3rd Edition D&D needs a book like this........2006-07-14
The Rules Cyclopedia is the type of rulebook that 3rd Edition D&D lacks. Rather than requiring a library worth of books, everything you need to play the game is contained in this one, straightforward and well organized volume. Character, Monster, Treasure and Adventuring rules are all contained within these pages. This book, plus pencil, paper and dice are all a player and DM need for an evening of fantasy adventure. If Wizards of the Coast produced a book like this for 3rd edition, I would buy it in an instant.
Rules!!.......2006-04-01
This is a very good resource book for not only D&D, AD&D, but also newer versions of the game. I use it for ideas in running a Castles and Crusades game. It is one of the best gaming books ever printed by TSR, possibly the best period. Find it and buy it!
A Classic - Must for Every D&D Player.......2002-09-27
The D&D Rules Cyclopedia is undoubtedly a classic. Every rule from the Basic to Masters boxed sets is covered in a very easy-to-read format. Multiple coloured maps of major Known World countries are in this book, along with brief descriptions. Additionally, an entire coloured map of both the Known World and Hollow World. A multitude of monsters are presented, including ones inhabiting the outer planes of existence. Every piece of information you could want about beginning any character and advancing to the hghest possible level also here. Tips for the DM on starting and running a campaign. Every other rule concerning combat encounters (very easy-to-understand) evasion, movement (both on foot and on any conceivable other mode of transportation, from ship to wagon, to horse etc.) Many treasure and magical item tables are very useful. Information on how players advance by acquiring treasure etc. One of the most useful things is a "Balancing Encounters" table which, although optional for the DM, allows him/her to always create fair encounters that will challenge players. Whether you're experienced or a newcomer, this book is truly a must-have, a reference work for D&D players of all levels and DM's.
Indispensable.......2000-03-12
This is the first book I ever read on the subject, and it still remains one of my all-time favorites. Despite the fact that several portions of the book are strictly D&D rules (such as the classes, specifically Elves, Dwarves, and Halflings), most of the remaining materials can be easily adapted to any version of AD&D, and in most cases the DM will benefit from doing so. This book covers in near-completion such viable topics as the specifics of combat, such as non-lethal weapons combat, special maneuvers (set lance versus charge), and weapons mastery and training, higher levels and the trappings that come with the rank (castles, followers, assistants), and quite extensive listings of very interesting monsters, most of which were never seen in any other place again (among which there are several truly alien extraplanars and a few utility creatures).
Best of all, this book presents all of these necessary rules in an easy and comprehensive form that does not destroy the original rules in favor of new ones. If you can find this handbook for a good price, I say buy it.
I can not say enough about this book!.......2000-01-15
I have already written a review (see the review prior to this) on this marvelous title very recently but I felt like I did not do justice last time.
In addition to all the stuff I said in the previous message that the book discussed that the AD&D manuals don't, I forgot to mention that the Rules Cyclopedia also talked about non-lethal combat rules (say you wish to fight someone in your party to obtain bragging rights on who is the strongest without killing him/her),several maps of Mystara, the Hollow World, the nations of Mystara, and lastly, a list and descriptions of the main cast of monsters for the D&D game. All of this stuff plus everything I said in the last message for just over $20 when I bought it! What a treat! The D&D Rules Cyclopedia covers a wider range of information than the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide,AD&D Player's Handbook, and the AD&D Monstrous Manual COMBINED and for a WHOLE LOT LESS! It is ridiculuos when I think about it but it is the honest truth.
This book deserves to be on your shelf whether you are a DM for D&D or AD&D. You will not be disappointed with the extra details and ideas the Rule Cyclopedia has that the AD&D core manuals don't include. Finally, I agree wholeheartedly with an earlier post that this flawless masterpiece deserves to be re-printed. It is just excellent.

Great Strategies.......2007-03-29
Excellent book for strategies in tax-free investing to achieving my personal goal of living in my dream house. I bought this book with "Buying A Second Home: Income, Gateway or Investment" to better understand the tax benefits of second-home ownership.
How a Second Home Can Be Your Best Investment........2007-01-31
Great book! We own second home so I think it will be very helpful with Taxes.
Excellent Information.......2006-03-16
This book provides some excellent information regarding the topic. A must read for those who are considering investment in a second home.
Dangerous Cheerleaders.......2005-12-14
Some people need encouragement. Regarding our dreams for a 2nd home, most of us are probably stuck in ruts, not knowing how to get out. This book does a good job of helping readers envision the possibilities. Too good a job. They do not present a systematic process for realistically considering what a prospective 2nd home buyer can afford, whether this is even a good idea, the downs of investing (how will you feel after 6 months of no rent in your investment property while still paying the mortgage?) They don't have the reader ask enough tough questions before cheering them on to take this bold and potentially devestating step. Think the dot bomb was rough? How about staring a $2000/month mortgage in the face with no hope of liquidating that property that's worth 10% less than you paid for it! I recommend Investing in a Vacation Home for Pleasure and Profit by James H. Boykin instead.
Good Read, but Leaves me wanting.......2005-04-04
I like this book, but it left me wanting more. The book does a nice job framing a second home as an investment, but the tax advantages are quickly addressed in chapter two w/o a lot of detail. After one read, I get the general idea, but not all of the implications. Also, the trade-offs of depreciation are only touched on vaguely.
However, the book is very readable and uses great antidotal examples (which I found helped me understand the material better). Also, there are lots of references for additional research. This i probably a good introduction into the subject and did leave me with enough information to decide to pursue this idea of a second home a little farther.
