Under Acknowledged.......2007-02-02

I'm surprised there haven't been more reviews on this book. This is one of my favorite Art Business books.

The books begins with an artist evaluation which I found very helpful a few years back when I first read this book. It really helps the artist to take a realistic look at where they are both philosophically and in their career.

The fourth chapter is also helpful for the uninitiated. It briefly covers a wide aray of different marketplaces for artists. one things that I particulary like about this book is that it openly acknowledges the differences between "Fine Artists" or "academic" artists and "decorative" or "commercial" artists. Different opportunities or more appropriate for one type than the other. This si a distinction that many books on this subject ignore.

Abbott's chapters "Developing Your Presentation Materials" and "Targeting Prospective Venues" are also quite helpful. The one complaint I have about the book is the focus on the Print Market. This is a great market for many artists and he does a very good job of covering the market. For many this is a good thing. But, since it is not a market to which my work readily lends itself I thought it was a bit much. But, mostly I thought the coverage betrayed the authors bias as at the time he wrote this book he was involved with a company that published art work. Still despite his bias all the information he gives is good and useful.

Overall this is a very good book which I am surprised has not gotten more attention.

I, unfortunatly, bought this book in a school store, and therefore paid too much, but the information contained within this book is well worth the expense. Abbott gives great advice about getting your career going in some unusual, "back door" ways that most students as well as artists have probobly never thought of. There is a long section of contacts, great ideas on funding and sponsorship, as well as some rather humbling advice when it comes to our field. Most of us want to start out in the world with a good job and a fairly well planned future, this book is a great tool for achieveing those goals, and a reliable source for new directions when all else fails.

I think that the book is excellent in terms of its coverage in the various areas of fashion product development. In fact I can say it is the only book that covers all the relevant areas of fashion product development in a logical fashion. It starts with concept of fashion and design and how it translates all the way through to garment production and marketing. It uses simple language and very practical examples, which will be clearly understood, not only by people working in the garment industry but also by lay persons. It is an excellent book for graduating fashion designers that are seeking jobs in the retail sector. It will give them a true picture of the behind the scenes. It also broaches on areas like hierarchy and the flow of the design process. It will also give a clear guideline to graduates where they want to position themselves in the industry. Overall I cannot find any shortcomings in the book, except it is a little sketchy on the points where garment production takes place abroad in developing nations in the East. More elaboration on this would bring it closer to the real workings of the garment trade today.

A science teacher at heart, he gave 1,500 traveling science demonstration lectures across the U.S. and Canada. Besides covering Strickfadens entire personal and professional life, this book discusses how later films show his influence. It reveals the fate of his collection of equipment, and is richly illustrated with numerous rare and previously unpublished photographs. Appendices provide a selection of notes, doodles, and scribbles from Strickfadens notebooks, informal sketches, correspondence, documents, a chronology of his film and television contributions, a bibliography, a film index, and a complete subject index.

Tesla Coils Create the Movie.......2006-11-10

Harry Goldman did an excellent job on reporting on Ken Strickfadens life and achievements. He also proved that nothing comes close to real sparks for a movie. Reccomend this book for movie buffs, Nikola Tesla fans, and historians!

Horror movie background info.......2006-04-02

This is a great story about the little-known genius behind the creation of the mad-scientist labs in so many of the old horror films we all love, Dr. Frankenstein's lab being the most famous and familiar. You get a feel for what was happening in the world that reflected in Strickfaden's life at various stages and it's fun to read some of the Hollywood set stories.This book is obviously written by someone who has a great respect for the person and the talent embodied in Kenneth Srtickfaden.
The photos are facinating as are the several pages of the original sketches for the equipment he made.
(By the way, you can see a glimpse of Strickfaden in the trailer with Mel Brooks on the DVD of Young Frankenstein, also highly recommended.)

Great book for new fans!.......2006-11-26

We bought the "Gordon" CD for our daughter when it was first out, but I am embarrassed to admit, I did not listen to it. But friends told us the music was appropriate for an 8 yo. I did not have a CD player in my car or at work and that was part of the problem. At any rate,we just recently saw BNL in concert in Rochester, and I was blown away by the music! I never realized how complex and different the music was. This got me wondering about the history of the band, and how they have stayed together so many years and still seem to have fun making music and entertaining. That led me to this book...and I took it out of my local library. I have to say, for a new fan, it is a great way to learn about the evolution of the band, their early years and the troubles they went through staying together. It almost reminded me of the work involved in a marriage. I would agree with the other reviewer that, at times, the author tries to be coy and it falls somewhat flat,and that is why I gave it 4 stars(I would have given it 4.5, but that's not available, but for a new fan, it's a great read. The book is on my Christmas wish list; it is something I can see reading over and over! If you are new to the band, make sure you read it!

It's well worth the cost and read for any Barenaked Ladies fan, but prepare yourself for backseat reading as the story is mainly of Paul's experience with the band rather than the band's story. The first half (up to Stunt) is great, but the second half is a bit thin.

Perfect back-of-the-toilet book.

Paul Myers Presents BNL Featuring Paul Myers.......2003-12-30

Public Stunts, Private Stories (which was originally sold directly to fans at BNL concerts) would be an incredible biography if it weren't for the author's incessant, excessive need to insert himself into the proceedings. Paul Myers tries to emulate the anything-goes style of the band's live shows in his narrative, but falls entirely flat. He constantly uses first-person voice as he commits the sin that the Ladies are often unjustly accused of: being clever for the sake of being clever. It's a criticism I've never believed about the band, but Myers has no defense with pointless asides (such as the Willie Nelson Connection, which isn't really much of a connection at all), self-referential interviews, forced pop-culture namedropping, and mid-narrative lines like "Yes, I know I'm on thin ice with the bad puns and wordplay." More than you know, Paul. Step back and let the band's story be the star, please?

What's more, the book is not as complete as it should be for a historical account of the Barenaked Ladies' evolution as a band. There are references to Maybe You Should Drive being a traumatic experience, but no real solid evidence to suggest what the source of the tension was--Ben Mink, for instance, is not interviewed. Anybody who gave Myers a lot of face time for interviews (such as manager Terry McBride, whose interview is as chilling as it is informative) gets more attention in the book. It comes off as uneven.

And still, the grating elements are outweighed by excellent, honest quotes by the band, plenty of fun photos, amusing anecdotes, and a lovingly detailed recounting of the band's earliest days. Hearing so many of the stories straight from the band members themselves--especially when they're being embarassingly honest about their own flaws and the band's more difficult growth stages--gives this book a compelling flow. As the only decent BNL book out there, Public Stunts, Private Stories is #1 in a field of one.

The core of the material works so well that I'd love to see a revised edition in a few more albums, with Myers' extraneous influence toned down.

Great Band, Good Book.......2003-12-23

Paul Myers' book offers a serviceable account of the history of Barenaked Ladies, from their beginnings through the making of 2000's Maroon.

What's missing is much in the way of insight from the band members. The book details their early Canadian success and struggle to build an American following before the 1998 album Stunt and its breakout single "One Week" made them stars. It touches on band member Kevin Hearn's struggle to overcome leukemia and various marriages and births.

But it doesn't explore much past the surface in any aspect. This band has been through some struggles, and the brooding melancholy that lurks in their lyrics has to come from somewhere. But the book emphasizes their clever wordplay, sense of humor and superb musicianship leaving much unanswered about what personal darknesses lead to songs like "When I Fall" or "Light Up My Room," or "Break Your Heart" or "Pinch Me."

I know there are some stories to tell, because I've read some of them in interviews with the band. Myers doesn't seem interested in offering a deeper examination of these fascinating people, and the book suffers as a result. The closest he comes is when he mentions the death of one of Ed Robertson's brothers as part of the meaning of the song "Leave" -- the way that a premature death can haunt those left behind. But even then he mentions it in passing and deals with the whole issue in one paragraph.

The other major failing is that Myers is infatuated with his own cleverness, and the text is peppered with puns and efforts to incorporate song titles into sentences. These devices might bring a smile or two used sparingly, but he seems to lack both self-restraint and a good editor.

Hi, Paul Myers here. Barenaked Ladies fans may have seen me on VH1's Behind The Music. I have been working for over two years on the forthcoming book, Barenaked Ladies: Public Stunts And Private Stories, published by Madrigal Press. We have been working, the band and I, at making this the definitive souvenir for any Barenaked Ladies fan and a useful resource for the recently converted or mildly curious. Its packed with pictures and juicy never before told stories of pain, heartbreak, cancer and depression. But that's not to say we can't see the humour of the situation. Think of it as The Barenaked Anthology.

The right guidance for CRM.......2007-08-27

Finally...a useful MS CRM book. Mike and Jim actually addressed the CRM issues that are important rather than just describing what CRM screens look like. Well written, understandable, useful examples. It's better than all the other MS CRM books I have looked at.

A worthless book for the most part. It's written to administrators, not the average user, so there is no help on actually using the software.

And if it's written to administrators, all it covers is the obvious that can easily be found in the documentation or discerned by the average IT pro.

So I'm not sure who this book is for.

Worth the Investment!.......2007-04-18

I thought this was a great MS CRM book.

The book is well written, easy to follow and packed with useful info on how to get the most out of MS CRM.

It is definitely aimed at the CRM administrator rather than the end user.
Some programming knowledge would be useful for customization but for most of the book; administrator access and an interest in CRM would suffice.

Excellent Informative Reference Book for Microsoft CRM 3.0.......2007-03-28

Working with Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 edition is easier to understand and find what you are looking for. I have implemented another brand of CRM and I find it well written even from the viewpoint of someone who is a Business Analyst and not a Systems Administrator. Although, you will need systems administrator privileges to setting up and configuring the "time limited" software on the CD included with the book and you need knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange Server.

Because Microsoft Dynamics ERP can now make extensive use of it Microsoft's CRM is a valuable tool to enhancing the business users experience and productivity. Ultimately, learning how to provide CRM's robustness to the end user in a helpful manner and easily navigated will be the challenge of the Business Analyst and Developer. Hopefully, most administrators will simply role out CRM rules based on a set of defined guidelines per work functions or as an application indicate. Ad hoc CRM changes could produce a difficult operational and user environment.

I suggest, extending the capabilities at either the client side or server end for working with outside applications with a Business Analyst or Developer to maintain productivity.
